Researching phase

Greetings, sisters of Beta Sigma Phi.....

I just recently heard of BSPhi and it seems VERY interesting to me.. I had sent a message to a member that I found on ICQ and she was very rude to me :( In any case, I'm still in the researching phase, but I just wanted to say that it seems like you girls have a wonderful sisterhood!!!!

bsp-mich24 05-19-2003 10:33 PM

Please - don't label all BSPs as rude...

Hi DigitalAngel126

I'm sorry you were treated badly by a sister in our organization. Every organization has a few "bad apples" so to speak. On our forum you will find that we are caring and support one another.

Don't let this experience keep you from finding out what Beta has to offer.:)

erica812 05-20-2003 04:22 PM

Welcome! I'm terribly sorry that your first contact with a Beta wasn't so great, but you will definitely find some friendly sisters here! I strongly encourage you to follow your interest in Beta Sigma Phi. My experience has been wonderful, and these fabulous ladies on GreekChat have been part of why I love being a Beta sister!!

If you have any questions, please ask. And when you are ready to explore membership, be sure to contact the BSP membership department...membership@betasigmaphi.org.

Okay, question: I see things like Online Kappa or Online Alpha Phi.... What's that??

erica812 05-20-2003 11:37 PM

Online chapters

In short, online chapters are a supplement to traditional membership. Some Betas expand the bonds of sisterhood by joining online groups (chapters) to share ideas, experiences, and friendship. Some online chapters are very structured with actual online meetings. Others are more like chat groups. Something for every taste!

There is another thread on the second page of our forum called "Online Kappa." You can learn a lot more about online chapters there. (I would post the link, but I'm not sure how.)
You can also visit www.betajournal.com and click on Cyber City Council. There are links there to the online chapter websites.

Erica

Proud to be an ONLINE KAPPA!!!

Re: Rudeness

That sucks!
I am sorry she was rude to you! We do have some great sisters!

I was hesitant about joining at first but they greeted me with open arms.

Hell feel free to IM us anytime :D

Alright, so I sent an email in to membership and am going to be added to the prospective member database :D !!!! I'm going to be moving though, in a few weeks, so they're going to wait to post it until they have my new address.. Still excited though!!!

That's great news! I started my "Beta Quest" at this time just last year. It was a wonderful decision. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with one of our sisters. Unfortunately, every now and then you run into a bad seed. We got some names from international during the time that we were rushing, and one of the ladies in our area that we called said that she had the same experience with another chapter that she tried to contact. She was so hurt that she wouldn't even give us a chance. She said that when she called the chapter vice president to inquire about the chapter, the VP started asking her personal questions about what her husband did for a living, how much his annual salary was and what neighborhood she lived in, then the VP told her that they didnt think that she would be happy in a chapter like theirs.

Please don't let the rudeness stop you from seeking a chapter. I can assure that for the most part BSP is a great organization with loving and caring sisters.

Good luck in your journey.

Jill1228 06-09-2003 12:55 PM

I woulda been hella pissed if I got that type of questioning. You should be interested in ME not what my husband does (unless he is joining the chapter), ya know?

erica812 06-09-2003 01:29 PM

 Talk about RUDE! Wow! I'm so glad that my chapter sisters are completely down-to-earth and respectful of each other. We are all very different...diverse backgrounds, interestes, and asperations. I will be leaving my chapter next May :( but I hope that when I come back to visit someday, I will find that Delta Pi has continued to welcome women from all walks of life.

I hate that you were treated that way

Oh my I hate that you were treated that way. Beta Sigma Phi has been one of the best things in my life. I have moved from one state to another and away from blood relatives but always have sisters around me. If you were here in Houston I would love to bring you to our Chapter and Council to show you how great our sorority is. Hang in there, you will love us and the organization.
Barb :D

DigitalAngel126 06-10-2003 01:32 PM

It's okay...I understand the bad seed thing, we have a few in my chapter too (SK, not BSP :p) Anyhow, I finally moved into my apt and got my phone number and addy straightened it out and mailed it in. I can't wait to hear from someone, although I won't be too surprised if there aren't any close chapters. :( Ah well.

lwing 06-13-2003 01:11 PM

If you want to be contacted keep at us

Most chapters are very open and welcoming. Summer is not when most chapters meet so you might not hear for awhile but if you are interested, keep in touch with International and let us know if you are getting contacted. We'll even call chapters for you to tell them about your interest. Strangely, most chapters don't care much about your husband except if he fits in with chapter socials. My chapter pays little attention to the husbands and none when we are rushing. We don't care what your salary is just if you are a fun person. I'd love to tell you that all 165,000 members are gems but I can't. 99.9% though are and even we have days when we might be off our best behavior so don't let one experience effect you. We are a great group of women.

gusmom2000 06-26-2003 05:32 PM

HI! I just did a search for Beta Sigma Phi chapters in Warsaw, Indiana, and came up with a phone number. Nothing else, just a phone number, but if you're interested let me know. Indiana has a state council and three events plus a bowling tournement each year. We have a lot of fun! Let me know if I can help in any way in your search for a GREAT chapter!

Natasha

DigitalAngel126 06-26-2003 05:45 PM

Hmmm!!!! Wonder why I coudln't find a number when I searched... Bizzare. Any-old-how..Would it be a good idea to call them or wait for them to get my information and call me?

ETA: gusmom, I PM'd you. ;)

lwing 06-26-2003 05:53 PM

To call or not to call

If you have a number you certainly can give them a call. It depends on how open you are to taking that step. I wish I could swear that you'll get a great reception, most of the time you will but you could get a member who isn't sure what to do when she's contacted instead of doing the contact. You can wait to see if you are called and if not, try the number or you can contact us at International and ask us to give the locals a call for you. We're glad to do it. I would be the one to call these days but in my early years, calling would have been hard for me.

gusmom2000 06-26-2003 10:11 PM

This is how I searched on google

warsaw indiana "beta sigma phi"

One of the pages that came up was a very typewritten looking page that listed organizatinos and phone numbers in Warsaw.

Also, I'm on the State Ways and Means committee, so I'll look through my stuff for contact info on someone in youe area. I'm at work now, so that will be after I get home, and I'll probably let you know tomorrow if I find anything.

I'd offer, but we're about an hour southeast of the SOUTH sinde of Indy, so I think it might be a little far!:p

Good Luck!

Hey now, I love Batesville!!!!

gusmom2000 06-26-2003 10:21 PM

So, what appeals to you most...the Caskets, Hospital Furniture, or the LOVELY Hampton Inn where I while away the hours most evenings?:D

We actually do have a member from the north side (Fishers) that drives down during the sorority year. Ya know, I'm VP this year.....so things could be arranged!

Natasha

DigitalAngel126 06-26-2003 10:48 PM

Hmmmm... I'll take caskets for $400 please, Alex. :p

No, I have a good friend (and SK sister) from Milan, so I used to go down there quite frequently.. It's a cute little area and actually I miss it! LOL I'm guessing you know Milan, yes???

Contacting BSP

My humble advice, if you have a number or name of someone to contact, is for YOU to contact THEM!! I'm a lifetime member in a city of 100,000 plus whose chapter folded. I contacted City Council to say I would like to visit the remaining chapters and remain active in BSP. Its not like other sisters don't know me here as I served as City Council president a few years ago---however, no one called me to visit! I got an invitation to visit one chapter from a member of that chapter who works in the grocery story where I shop! I went to the meeting and waited to be asked to join them! I wasn't! Apparently, the 3 remaining chapters here have all the members they want---a grand total of about 30 after another chapter folded in May. After 36 years in BSP, only online chapters are available to me. Other online sisters have said they called and called again before getting an invitation to visit a chapter in their area!
I hope Natasha can put you in contact with a sister near you and that the sister WILL ask you to join them! At one time, it was not this difficult to become a member of Beta Sigma Phi!!
Best wishes,
JudyK
Online Theta

I guess I didn't really state my point---which is that you should contact someone because they may not contact you!:)

lwing 06-27-2003 11:04 AM

This is just sad

In a time when most chapters are begging us for names and telling us no one is interested chapters won't call the names they have been given. We have many, many prospective members who have told us they want to join but a lot of chapters will not take the time to call. I was very pleased to see the members at the Utah convention excited about growing the organization. Lets see if we can spread the enthusiasm organization wide again. You can't build your chapter if you don't ask. And you can't ask if you don't call. If you are a member and can't find an existing chapter to join, we'll help you form one, probably a lot of other members at large in the area like you who would like to join. If you are a new member, we have a new program for starting chapters if you are in an area without chapters or where you can't get chapters to respond. But remember, International will be glad to call people for you and keep at them for you. Just call or e-mail your Division Chairman or membership if you are a prospective member. That's what we are here for.

MoxieGrrl 06-27-2003 11:45 AM

lwing: Good advice! However, how does one go about finding who their Division Chairman is?

**Edited to say - Is the DC only for current members? And membership chair is for prospectives to call? If so, how does one find membership's phone number?

lwing 06-27-2003 12:21 PM

How to find right person

If you call International all you have to do is tell the receptionist your state and she'll give you the right Division Chairman, you don't have to know who your's is but the inside cover of the TORCH usually lists each Division Chairman and her states and countries. All Division Chairmen get their e-mail at the same address service@betasigmaphi.org so just put your state in the subject line and they'll sort it out. For new members or women who want to be new members membership is the department to get in touch with. You can call them at 1-800-Beta-2-B-1 or e-mail at membership@betasigmaphi.org. If you don't know who you want or need, we can get you to the right person. You can not get other departments on the membership 800 number.
