Any Performing Arts people here?

Just wanting to know if there are any triple threats or singing dancing actinging greeks or greek-to-be's here...I've been performing for the longest time...huge broadway/show/soundtrack, etc fan...Anyone have favorite shows? Or been in any shows?

AZpinkkittie 05-16-2003 11:38 AM

Pam you rock!! My AIM screenname is doublethreat for this reason. I'm not a triple cause I haven't had any formal dace training, but I've been in tons of shows, musicals and non, and wanted to be theater major my whole life. I've done Midsummer, Harvey, The Secret Garden, The Mikado, and several musicals written and performed by a local theater company, among tons of others. We'll have to trade stories!!

I just saw Cats and must admit, I wasn't that impressed, but I saw Stomp, Rent, and Mama Mia and was blown away!

Drama geeks kick azz!!:p

sherbertlemons 05-16-2003 11:51 AM

I'm a triple threat. A little bit rusty, though, because I haven't done a show in quite a while.

Oh, and I have to say, I hate Cats. I swear it's the most overrated musical of all time, followed closely by Phantom of the Opera, and the Disney musicals.

Right now, I'd have to say Rent is my favorite show. I'd love a chance to be in a production of it, but none of the female parts quite fit me. I also love Chicago- I was thrilled with the wonderful job they did on the movie. I wanna see Thoroughly Modern Millie. I have a friend that lives in Jersey and has seen it on Broadway and says it's really wonderful.

Is anyone else here into ballet? I've had 14 years of dance lessons, and although I haven't put my foot into a pointe shoe for a few years, I still love going to see the ballet.

AZpinkkittie 05-16-2003 11:54 AM

Good, someone else hated it too!! I don't feel like such a loser. And I feel asleep at Phantom. Love the music though

xo_kathy 05-16-2003 12:06 PM

See, I loved Cats. But I am a dancer so I always just wanted to dance that much 8 times a week! I HATED Les Mis. Fell asleep.

I'm basically a dancer who has done some acting and knows she can carry a tune so should take some voice lessons so I can be a triple threat, but not enough $$ for all the that training! Everytime I go to musical auditions calling for "dancers who sing" it's mostly singers who took 5 years of dance when they were little. So I always make the dance cut and then have to sing and get nervous and sound horrible. I actually had a director say once as I was leaving the room "That's a shame.." :(

But I have done quite a few dance productions and danced with a small modern comapny here in NY for a year. I'll be sure to let everyone know when I get my big break!

AlphaFrog 05-16-2003 12:18 PM

AZpink, I just got done with THe Mikado!!! Isn't it an awesome show??? We also do a Broadway Revue every semester at my college... I guess I'm a double threat...I've had formal dance training, but my knees are too bad for it now...but I love to act and sing!

AGDPrincess70 05-16-2003 01:44 PM

I used to be a triple threat, but I've gotten a little rusty after four years of not doing shows. Now I just mainly focus on dance. It's always been my first love. I'm even joining a local ballet company next fall! I can't wait.

I'm still really involved in my theatre group, even though I aged out. I'm in the middle of directing our reunion show, which is going to be AWESOME. We're just doing a revue with songs from the shows we've done, but everyone is so excited about it. People are actually coming all the way from North Carolina and New York just to be able to do the show.

And I'm sure you'll be hearing about it more as the show gets closer...just to warn you:D

Shelacious 05-16-2003 01:48 PM

I used to be...

Many years ago, I was a double threat: primarily an actor, but an actor who could sing. I have some dancing ability with mucho rehearsals, but certainly it's the weakest of the three.

I haven't acted in some years (after nine solid years of being a part of two theater groups, from jr. high to college), but thinking about doing some community theater in the next year or so. I don't often go to plays and musicals, not because I don't love them, but because it makes you want to get out there and be a part of it, you know?????

Oh I know! Every time I see a show that all of my theatre friends are in, it just makes me miss it more

MoxieGrrl 05-16-2003 01:51 PM

I'm definitely a dancer & I can act.....singing...heh. I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

KerriMarie 05-16-2003 02:44 PM

I'm a... not really a threat at all. :)

But I DO have a degree in theatre. I'm primarily a Stage Manager, although I want to get into educational theatre and eventually teach high school.

I love musicals - Cabaret is probably my favorite, and Rent, and Ragtime, and Chicago... I'm dying to get up to NYC and see Urinetown, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

MysticCat 05-16-2003 04:27 PM

Hate Cats!

Hate Les Mis!!

Hate Phantom!!!

I'll admit I tend to be a bit old fashioned: it doesn't get much better than "The Music Man" (although it definately does get better than the Matthew Broderick version that was on TV recently) or "Guys and Dolls." I love "Into the Woods" and "Rent," though. ("Rent" is particularly fun for those of us who have been in "La Boheme.") And "A Chorus Line" is a classic.

Yes, I miss being on stage! But with a day job and young kids, who has time?

Kevin 05-16-2003 05:00 PM

I'm a violin/fiddle player.

Mostly do classical music but have played in a rock band before -- actually got decent gigs at decent places, mostly original stuff.

I've played in operas and musicals (in the pit), more classical performances than I could even begin to count, solo recitals, church music... Never had the time to take the leap and really try to make much money out of it, it's just something I enjoy doing.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a quartet together to play weddings and such.. Can make decent money doing that.

AngelPhiSig 05-16-2003 05:15 PM

Singer, dancer, actor, lyricist, guard member...

what else?!

tinydancer 05-16-2003 05:28 PM

YES! I do quite a bit of community theatre. I have an audition this week-end for "Kiss Me Kate," which I have done before at a different theatre. This past year, I was in "Annie," "The Man Who Came to Dinner," Arsenic and Old Lace," (for the second time), "It's a Wonderful Life," "Girls of the Garden Club." My favorite play is "Harvey," would love to do that again. Have done "Nunsense," "Oklahoma," "Music Man," "Plaza Suite," probably more that I have forgotten.

I always wanted to act, but did not start until the mid-80s.

THEATRE ROCKS!!

RedFox 05-17-2003 12:18 AM

Can't sing, act or dance, but can stand and applaud loudly.

The rest of the family is another story. Wife has a degree in theatre. Oldest daughter has been in so many shows -- professional and amateur -- I can't keep track. She just closed in Godspell which her husband (a professional actor/director/coreographer) directed.

Son, at 19, is in his second year of professional summer theatre. Both did a lot of amateur and educational theatre before that. He won the main stage solo vocal main stage position in competition with high school students from all over the country at the International Thespian Festival twice in his last three years of high school.

Used to get to NY a lot, but haven't been there in a while. Going in about a month and working on what I want to see while I'm there.

Wife and I give each other season tickets to the Broadway Series at the Denver Center every year. Remarkably good. The national tours of both Sunset Blvd. and Lion King premiered there.

Have seen major shows in New York, London, LA and, of course, Denver.

Won't even get into favorites -- the list is long and complicated.

Just ran across this on the Ohio University website while I was checking some information on the Sarah Jessica Parker thread.

Thought it might be of interest to some of you:

Cape Cod landmark is an Ohio University tradition
By Joseph Hughes
While Ohio University officially boasts five regional campuses, the nearly 200-year-old institution transcends traditional, brick-and-mortar learning centers. In fact, students receive their "Ohio University education" around the globe, around the clock.

A perfect example of the University's efforts outside the classroom is the School of Theater's relationship with the Monomoy Theatre in Chatham, Mass., a picturesque Cape Cod destination. Each summer - for the last 46 summers - the Ohio University Players produce eight shows, ranging from Shakespeare to Neil Simon.

Each year, the Monomoy Theatre houses a group of graduate and undergraduate students comprising the Players. One of the nation's few remaining university-run seasonal theaters - and also the Cape's second-oldest summer theater - the Monomoy allows students to gain professional experience by acting, directing, set design, technical work and box-office management.

"The Monomoy is very strongly related to Ohio University," says School of Theater director Paul Castagno. "It is treated with a great deal of respect, not only in the area, but also by professionals in the industry. Our students receive invaluable professional training there. Many of our alumni spend each summer enjoying the plays."

It was 46 summers ago the Monomoy Theatre first became linked to Ohio University. In 1958, Elizabeth Baker - wife of then-President John C. Baker - purchased the Monomoy Theatre property, leasing it to the University for use as an educational training center.

Prior to the purchase, the Monomoy had been a community arts center in the 1930s. Under owner Mary Winslow's guidance, the Monomoy Theatre became home to a highly regarded professional company during the 1940s and 1950s.

When Winslow died in 1957, the theater's future was cloudy at best - until Baker's purchase one year later, a decision highlighted in A History of the Monomoy Theatre, written by Robert Hannon Davis, MFA '84.

Since their birth in 1958, the Ohio University Players have delighted audiences with their diverse selection of summer performances. The 2003 season is no different, as the Players' summer season begins with Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate." Other highlights include Agatha Christie's "The Mouse Trap," Simon's "Biloxi Blues" and Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night."

"When (Monomoy artistic director) Alan Rust pitched this summer's season to the Friends of Monomoy (a local support organization for the theater), he did so by first using the authors rather than the titles," Castagno says. "And he got a great reaction. This is a real winner for the students who have to move quickly from style to style and still make it happen for audiences with a minimum of rehearsal time."

Each of the Players' eight shows enjoys a five-day run, beginning Tuesdays and ending Saturdays - complete with select matinees. Eight shows in 12 weeks means an extremely rigorous schedule. The Players have two weeks to rehearse a show; moreover, they must prepare for the next two works while performing the current selection.

To that end, becoming an Ohio University Player is quite an honor. Each winter, Rust, MFA '73, holds tryouts on the Athens campus. Those selected to spend the summer in Massachusetts spend the spring preparing for their roles or designing sets or costumes for their productions. When summer comes, they live and eat in a theater compound on Chatham's Main Street.

"I'm looking for someone who is committed to their craft, ready to do intensive work and continue building at Ohio University," Rust says. "The Monomoy Theatre is their summer school - they will be graded. However, they will also receive invaluable hands-on training in a unique setting."

Each Player usually plays six or seven roles over the summer, while designers and costumers typically work on four shows per season. Everyone also benefits from working with accomplished theater professionals.

John Hashop is one such individual. Hashop, MFA '04, will be spending his second straight summer in Chatham. "It's a great opportunity for a developing actor to be able to work with established, professional actors and directors from New York," Hashop says. "Not only for the experience we gain on stage, but also for the little things you learn. How to find an agent. Or a place to live in New York City.

"It's an invaluable experience."

Noted alumni who have shared the Monomoy experience include Michael John McGann, BFA '73 (Broadway's "Annie"), Matthew Glave, 'BFA '87, (NBC's "ER") and Fred Duer, BGS '77 and MFA '82, (set design for "Fresh Prince of Bel Air"). Each cut their teeth during a summer spent at the Monomoy Theatre, which itself benefits from its Chatham location.

"The Monomoy Theatre benefits from being in a community comprising many patrons of the arts," Rust says. "They really enjoy the classic material we assemble. We sell out most every performance. It's a marvelous marriage between town and gown in Chatham. There is no place in the country that does this kind of work in an educational setting."

Hashop, an actor playing the lead role in Moliere's "Tartuffe" this summer, agrees.

"It's amazing there," he says, beaming. "The weather is so beautiful. Everyone in Chatham is so happy to have us there, especially the Friends of Monomoy. They often invite the entire company to their houses for lunch!"

The Friends of Monomoy help in other ways, too, such as providing fellowships to performers intended to attract top talent to Chatham. In the past, the Friends have also helped raise money for refurbishments made to the theater itself.

"The Monomoy is a really unique venue," says Castagno. "It has become a very important part of the fabric of the School of Theater and also Ohio University."

Thanks to the foresight of Elizabeth Baker - and the talented Players who bring each work to life - the Monomoy Theatre promises to remain important to the University for years to come.

Joseph Hughes is a writer for University Communications and Marketing

NOTE: I visited Monomy in 1970 on our Honeymoon to Cape Cod, the year my wife graduated from the O.U. Theatre Department. It is really an amazing place. A number of her friends were in the company that year -- at least two of which went on to fairly successful TV careers. The setting is beautiful and the opportunity is outstanding.

I'm a theatre major. I just directed Edward Albee's The American Dream. I want to start my own production company this summer but need to find a "realy job" first. Also I act and want to try writing.

LuaBlanca 05-19-2003 10:14 PM

Yea-hea QUADRUPLE threat! I've been dancing/singing/acting since FOREVER. I'm still a ballerina...but I don't have the long, lean frame for it so it's not going to get me anywhere...I just do it because I love being en pointe! I LOVE MUSICALS (I'm heading to NY this weekend for a Broadway-fest: I'm seeing Take Me Out, Cabaret, Frog and Toad, Millie, and Aida!!!)

I've been in/done tech for "Once on This Island," "Little Shop of Horrors," (Twice) "Into the Woods," "The Secret Garden," "Annie," "Oklahoma!" "Chicago," and "Peter Pan." This summer I'll be doing "Smokey Joe's Cafe" and "Jekyll and Hyde."

I have a VERY strong Alto voice, and have sang at various weddings, school events, church functions, etc. Also, I've been in 2 a-capella choirs, and currently front/backup a rock cover band (YEAH Renaissance Alliance! hehehe)

ALSO- I've been playing the violin for about 10 years. I've been in the pit for 2 summer stock shows, and have played at art galleries and banquets. AND I've danced with Colorguard and a World Champion Percussive Theater!

CLEARLY- Performing Arts is my LIFE! (You all know how awesome it is!)

I'm heading to Emerson College in Boston in the fall to study Theater Education...my goal is to work in an educational outreach program for a museum/traveling theater company! I'm never giving it up! lol
