Jeopardy

I received a phone call on Tuesday from Jeopardy. I have been selected to tryout for the show in three weeks. I am really excited. Has anyone from GC ever been on Jeopardy or any other game show? Does anyone have any advice about what I should do to prepare? Thanks for any advice you might have. :)

LeslieAGD 05-15-2003 07:35 PM

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

To practice, watch as much Jeopardy as you can handle!

Jadey28 05-15-2003 07:44 PM

Awesome! Congrats! I have never been on Jeopardy, but I imagine playing trivia games and such things like that will benefit your knowledge! Let us know how things go and if you are going to be on TV. I'd love to tune in and watch a fellow GCer show their smarts. ;)

WAY COOL!!! I love Jeopardy, but it comes on here when I am still at work. Love to watch it during the summer. I do really well at game shows when I play at home. Don't know how I would do if I were really on the show!

texas*princess 05-15-2003 08:49 PM

Congratulations!!!!! That rocks!!! I know you'll do awesome!

I don't know how the filming for Jeopardy is but here is my experience:

I was on the Weakest Link game show and won it a few months ago. It was really high stress because the lights are on you and there are a bunch of unemployed actors that get paid to sit in the audience and talk trash about you. It wasn't completely based on knowledge because the strategy involved making sure people don't vote you off and you vote the right ones off, etc.

I don't know your wealth of knowledge. I devour anything where I feel like I'm learning (PBS documentaries, books, magazines, newspapers) and spend around 3 hours a day looking up stuff outside of classes. Because of that I didn't really prepare. If you're not as big of a nerd as me, I guess I'd read some sort of comprehensive history book and look through a bunch of magazines (Time might not be a bad choice). I hear some people try to memorize almanacs. I don't know. Also, the foreign service exam had some similar questions (much easier) so check out some practice books for that if you can.

But I think most of it is based on confidence. Remind yourself that everyone else on the show is a worthless piece of shit and you're there to take them down. Seriously, after the show a couple of the girls were trying to hang out with me and I still couldn't seperate myself from that thought.

--And remember that speed counts. If you can't handle pressure and think quickly, you're done. Good luck.

Never been on Jeopardy! but I am familiar with their tryout process.

First stage is a 100-question written test of general knowledge. Pass that and you go to the next stage, which is a mock Jeopardy game. Pass that and then that puts you in the contestant pool. You will have to travel to LA for the game -- the show does not pay expenses. (It's rare for Jeopardy! to do traveling shows, unlike Wheel of Fortune).

Five days' worth of games are filmed on one day; there may be times where you will wind up waiting in the 'green room' until you're called.

Couple of books highly recommended if you want to prepare for Jeopardy! -- here they are:

Secrets of the Jeopardy Champions
by Chuck Forrest, Mark Lowenthal (Contributor) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

How to Get on Jeopardy!... and Win: Valuable Information from a Champion by Michael Dupee http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...roduct-details

Looks like the second book's out of print, but with a decent search you can find it MUCH cheaper. Check out the reviews from a couple of former contestants there.

Good luck!

Excellent advice! I got my call for a tryout - two weeks after I left my ex-huband! I was NOT at my emotional best, but:

The written part is given by watching a tv screen with Alex Trebec asking the questions. I think you have 30 or 45 seconds to come up with the answer. Try not to misnumber - they will tell you that they take that into consideration, but I know I only missed 2 questions - but got confused as to which went where.

Also, I have an electronic Jeopardy game that you play against the tv - it does all the math & everything! Problem is, I haven't seen them in years. If you can find one, it's the very best practice you'll get.

The above books mention some of the "must know" catagories - take them seriously.

Most importantly, relax and have fun with it! Good luck!

Peaches-n-Cream 05-16-2003 12:35 AM

Thanks everyone. This advice is very helpful. I knew that I could count on GCers! :D

honeychile, you mention 'must know' categories. Could you name them off the top of your head? I'll try and check out those books. :)

Munchkin03 05-16-2003 12:50 AM

Use your index finger instead of your thumb to activate the buzzer. Thumb seems more natural, but your index finger has faster reflexes.

Mr. Munchkin tried out for "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" back in 2000 when it was still a decent show. I guess these trivia gameshows all have the same format...

Good luck!

Peaches-n-Cream 05-16-2003 12:22 PM

Thanks!

Good advice so far. I am sort of a nerd about history facts and PBS documentaries. I have been watching Jeopardy religiously since I received the call. I've been doing well. I got most of the questions right that the contestants got wrong. This is the championship. The problem is that they won't repeat those questions. I need to brush up on some things. I'm just not sure what subjects or how. I think that I will be like Rosie Perez in "White Men Can't Jump" and read an almanac. ;)

When my mother tried out for Jeopardy in the 1960's, she didn't know anything about sports. As a result, she didn't get on the show. :( I don't want history to repeat itself. lol!

Any more advice and suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks again. :D

That's cool, Cream! If you make it on the show, you have to give GC shout out!

This reminds me of the Golden Girls ep where Dorothy had the Jeopardy try out.

SATX*APhi 05-16-2003 03:26 PM

Cream, you can wear a Gamma Chi shirt to represent!! :D

I missed that one. I am afraid I'll be like Cliff Clavin from Cheers. At the final he has $25,000, bets it all, and loses. I'll try to avoid doing that. lol! :)

ARGH! I wish I would've known the a few weeks ago when I was in a Game Show Network thing at the mall (chance to win 10K scholarship)------- thumb does feel more natural but it sucks- index finger would've worked much better.

Those buzzers suck!

Peaches-n-Cream 05-22-2003 01:27 PM

It's official. I just received a letter from Jeopardy. I am trying out for Season #20 on Friday, June 6th. I have to take a written 50 question test in 45 minutes. If I pass, I will be interviewed which will take another hour. Even if I pass the test, there is no guarantee that I will be invited to do the show.

Any tips and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks! :D

Peaches-n-Cream 06-03-2003 04:46 PM

In three days, I will try out for Jeopardy. I'm getting nervous. Are there any more tips and suggestions from GCers? :) Thanks.

sigtau305 06-03-2003 08:17 PM

If you do win, Are you having a party to celebrate?;)

Peaches-n-Cream 06-03-2003 08:43 PM

lol! I just hope that I pass the test on Friday. It would be cool to be on the show, though. :p My fingers are crossed.

polarpi 06-04-2003 01:12 AM

Good luck with the tryout...I'll be sending happy thoughts and "good vibes" your way! :)

Peaches-n-Cream 06-06-2003 03:00 PM

Thanks polarpi! I'm going to take the test in a little over an hour at 4PM. Thanks for all the good thoughts and advice from GC! I'll let you know what happened. :D Keep your fingers crossed.

Peaches-n-Cream 06-06-2003 06:12 PM

I'm back. Thanks for all the well wishes. Unfortunately, I didn't pass the exam, but it's ok. I have a Jeopardy pen. :p Over 50 people took the test with me and I think 5 or 6 passed so it was hard. I did my best, and I can take the test again in 6 months if I want. Alex wasn't there, but the blonde from the clues crew was. Anyway it was an interesting experience. Maybe I'll try out for "Who wants to be a Millionaire" now. :D They have more $$$$$. lol! :) Thanks again.
