First Dance Song at your wedding

Ok, the Mr. and I are having a hard time trying to decide what our first dance should be to-the wedding in is 4 months (dear god, I'm so unprepared... )-any ideas?? So far we have:

-Come Away with Me-Norah Jones(my pick!!)
-Gringo Honeymoon-REK(the TX people will know that one)
-Way you look tonight-Sinatra(but so cliche!!)

Married GCers, what was your first dance to? I need help!!:)

ilovemyglo 05-13-2003 10:04 AM

Actually I am not married, but a classis is
Etta James, AT LAST
That's going to be mine... someday!

RedRoseSAI 05-13-2003 10:13 AM

Ours was "My One and Only Love"...an awesome but not very well known classic.

adduncan 05-13-2003 10:18 AM

Ours was "Just the Way You Are" --Billy Joel
An oldie but a goodie.

Don't worry about "unprepared"--everything comes down to the wire anyway and in my case, everything worked out fine. Congrats!!

Not married (yet!), but one song that has gotta be played at my wedding is We Have All The Time In The World by Louis Armstrong (from the soundtrack of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service). Yeah, it's old, but it's worth playing. (It was the last song performed by Satchmo before he died in 1969.)

We have all the time in the world,
Time enough for life to unfold
All the precious things love has in store...
We have all the love in the world
If that's all we have, you will find
We need nothing more!

Every step of the way will find us
With the cares of the world far behind us...
We have all the time in the world, just for love
Nothing more, nothing less, only love!

Kevin 05-13-2003 10:29 AM

I won't have a choice.

White_Chocolate 05-13-2003 10:36 AM

too many to choose from

i only have eyes for you-the flamingoes
back to you-john mayer
te di- a.b. quantillia y los kumbia kings
i'd do anything for you by jamie walters
the other side by jamie walters
nobody but you by jamie walters
celebrate you-steven curtis chapman
i love you-sarah mclachlan

AOX81 05-13-2003 10:37 AM

Ours was The Dance by Garth Brooks.

greeklawgirl 05-13-2003 11:06 AM

Ours was "At Last," by Etta James. :)

RedRoseSAI, my husband's best friend got married to "My One and Only Love." It is a lovely song!

Munchkin03 05-13-2003 11:33 AM

For the very first dance song, I want a classic. The song must have passed the test of time. Many of these songs are of personal importance in my current relationship, but I think I'd like to have them regardless of who I marry.

-When I Fall in Love (The Nat King Cole version, NOT Celine Dion)
-Nature Boy (Nat King Cole)
-What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)
-Grow Old Along with Me (John Lennon)
-The Way you Look Tonight (Sinatra, yes a cliche...but it was one of our "first songs")
-And I Love Her (The Beatles)
-Overjoyed (Stevie Wonder)
-The Very Thought of You (Nat King Cole)
-Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton)

Sistermadly 05-13-2003 11:36 AM

Mistermadly and I danced to "At Last" by Etta James. Two friends of mine danced to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" by Ella Fitzgerald.

AOIIBrandi 05-13-2003 11:43 AM

Hubby and I danced to "How do I" - the Leanne Rhimes version

fuzzie 05-13-2003 12:06 PM

We used 2 because we couldn't decide. The first dance we had our parents join us and the second was the bridal party dance. We used:

"In My Life" - Beatles
"I'll Back You Up" - Dave Matthews Band

Good luck deciding. I know it was tough for us.

I love all of these, too, but What a Wonderful World is used more frequently for things like mother/son dances or father/daughter dances.
Let me ask my boyfriend... he DJ's wedding receptions on the weekends for fun (well he gets paid, but he enjoys doing it). He probably could name a million for you!

MoxieGrrl 05-13-2003 12:17 PM

Our first song is definitely going to be something by DMB. :) Maybe we will look back and cringe, our kids will make fun of us.....but Dave shaped my life during college almost as much as Mr. Mox. :)

AlphaGamDiva 05-13-2003 12:20 PM

at last is soooooo gettin played at my wedding....so gettin played!

another one i like is the duet with celine dion and ol blue eyes "all the way".....it's super pretty.

celine has excellent mushy love songs, so just check her out for good ones, really......

also, what is that new song out? "if you're not the one," or something? how sweet is that? who sings it?

my sister and her now ex danced to the song from moulin rouge, the lil secret song. names are escaping me........

"from this moment" by shania twain with brian white is such a wedding song

LeslieAGD 05-13-2003 12:34 PM

I like Kenny Latimore's For You

For you I'd make a promise of fidelity,
Now and for eternity
No one could replace this vow
For you I'd take your hand and heart and everything
And add to them a wedding ring
'Cause this life is no good alone,
Since we've become one you're all I know
And if this feeling should leave I'd die
And here's why
All I am is for you

cuaphi 05-13-2003 01:29 PM

A couple of really romantic, slightly less well known ones:

"To Make you Feel my Love" sung by either Garth Brooks or Bob Dylan
"If you Love me" rare duet with Van Morrison and B.B. King. Really, really gorgeous song.

wishuponastar 05-13-2003 01:50 PM

I'm not married (yet...) but I know that I want my wedding song to be either "Amazed" by Lonestar or "You've got a Way" by Shania Twain.

We did "She has a way" and "Wind Beneath My Wings" - the first was "our" song, and the second had a lot to do with how I met my wife - she was Miss Deaf Colorado (yes, somehow, I managed to marry a beauty queen!) - and did Wind in sign language. The most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Ivory, do you mean "If I Should Fall Behind"?

I'm a HUGE Springsteen fan and I love, love, LOVE that song! Its on our wedding video. Makes me teary every time. :)

We said we'd walk together baby come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we're walkin a hand should slip free
I'll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me

We swore we'd travel darlin' side by side
We'd help each other stay in stride
But each lover's steps fall so differently
But I'll wait for you
And if I should fall behind
Wait for me

Now everyone dreams of a love lasting and true
But you and I know what this world can do
So let's make our steps clear that the other may see
And I'll wait for you
If I should fall behind
Wait for me

Now there's a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There 'neath the oak's bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I'll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
Darlin' I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me

I LOVE "In My Life"!!! That is my favorite Beatles song...just the absolute best, and I had thought of that one too...

YES, sorry dude! Major Brain fart! Can you tell I just woke up??? It is my favorite love song as well...Gotta love the Boss! And the lyrics make me tear up a lil:) I think, I will listen to it right now...always make me feel better:)

KillarneyRose 05-13-2003 02:11 PM

Our first dance at out wedding was an oldie called "Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me". I can't remember who sang it, but it is a pretty song.

I sang "Power of Love" for our friends' first dance about 10 or 11 years ago. I love that song, and I was so honored they wanted me to sing for them :)

FiReKraCkEr 05-13-2003 02:20 PM

Totally forgot my Ben Harper

"Beloved"
"Waiting on an Angel"
"By My Side"

juniorgrrl 05-13-2003 03:52 PM

Our first dance is going to be to James Taylor's "How Sweet it Is to be Loved by You"

Its always been "our song" and its such a happy, upbeat non-mushy song :)

Another song we're going to use is Jimmy Buffett's "Love and Luck" its our "other" song.

AOIIalum 05-13-2003 03:55 PM

Ours was "In My Life" by The Beatles.

Christin

FAB*SpiceySpice 05-13-2003 04:14 PM

I know this is sooooooo ridiculously cheesy but there's this song by The Backstreet Boys called "How Did I Fall In Love With You" yea yea I know it's a BSB song, but the words to it are so sweet the song makes me cry everytime I hear it. I either want that played first, or The Dance by Garth Brooks.

:D

MoonStar17 05-13-2003 04:16 PM

Is it just me or does it seem that that the ladies of GC are leaning very much toward the theme of weddings and things of this nature in all the threads lately???

Anyways as for me...when i get married i would like
lone star "Amazed"

I already know what I want for my wedding....its all in my head...:D
*sigh* :)

Ahhhh...that's SUCH a beautiful song!

Eclipse 05-13-2003 05:05 PM

When I got married in 1996 we did our first dance to "Nothing has ever felt like this" by Will Downing and Rachelle Ferrell. We did our father daughter/mother son dance to "Wind beneath my Wings"

LuaBlanca 05-13-2003 05:07 PM

Songs from weddings I've been to/sang at over the past few years:
"Faithfully" by Journey (my parents' wedding song actually)
"From This Moment" by Shania Twain and Brian White
"Let's Make Love" Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
"Snow on the Sahara" by Anguun
"This Love" by Don Henley
"I Do (Cherish You)" by 98 Degrees
"I Love You" by Sarah McLaughlin
...
there are more but I'm at work so when I think of them I'll come back and edit....

aephi alum 05-13-2003 06:44 PM

Our first dance was "A Whole New World".
Our last dance was "Because You Loved Me".

We also considered "Everything I do, I do it for you" (not sure of the exact title offhand) and a few others.

If I could have reached forward in time, I would have liked "If You're Not the One". That was just on the radio, and they announced the performer, and I can't remember... Daniel something?

Jadey28 05-13-2003 07:04 PM

Although I have no major plans for a wedding anytime soon, I really really really really really want Clay Aiken (from American Idol II) to sing "I Could Not Ask For More" (an Edwin McCain song) for my first dance. I know, I am dreaming, but I'm allowed. On the same topic, instead of the traditional music being played while you are eating, I want ALL Dave Matthews Band music played. I am talking the mellow, easy listening music. Maybe I will let a few other songs sneak in there, but we'll see ;)

Ah, I love this topic. I can't wait for my day to come. :D

justamom 05-13-2003 07:21 PM

A song I doubt any have heard of (Unless you're from Texas or Alabama), "Angel Eyes" by Willis Allen Ramsey NOT the other song. :D

edited to add a sense of the song.

She is one with the mountains, she is one with the range. She is home in the woodlands, she is home on the range.
And all these things of beauty have left a kiss on her, I tell you Sir.
I said Lord she's as sweet as one of her pecan pies. Listening to her laughter I get hypnotized. Goodness knows I love my Angel Eyes.

"not myself" john mayer
"i'll back you up" DMB
"Love Soon" john mayer
"the distance" evan and jaron (serendipity soundtrack)
