Have you ever built a Habitat House?
 

Hey all, I am really excited that I will be working DRYWALL on a Habitat House on May 31 with the chapter. It will be my first time. I had to pass on a spring break Habitat trip in undergrad -- exhaustion. It would have been my first time in Mississippi too. :eek:


At any rate, I know there has to be some Habitat for Humanity folks out there. Spill it.

I definitely want to keep working with Habitat and when I get money, I want to donate it to Habitat as well, but I want to build a house too. :)

during my process and many time after wards, my chapter, with other greeks, help build houses in Fresno, CA. I remember painting a wall and helping in hammering nails to hold the drywall in place.
Another time, we helped with the ground breaking. Helped dig the hole where the house would be. It was fun, but A LOT of work.

Habitat was the first project we did after we crossed. By the time we (my line) got to participate, the house was already finished so all we got to do was site clean up. But it was a fun experience.

I have not participated in HFH, but we participate in a local effort called "Christmas in October". This program refurbishes and renovates homes of the less fortunate. We go in and help with the painting of the interior and exterior of the homes.

Habitat was the second service project that I did after becoming a member of Theta Tau. I swept the floors, painted, and helped put up the siding. It was an interesting experience. Definitely worthwhile.

I love doing habitat I started doing it in H.S in a community service org and then in college with the sorors. Thats where I learned how to paint, do drywall, install lights and a lot of other household oriented stuff. It was and still is a wonderful experience.

I have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and I must say I had a wonderful time. The particular house I helped build allowed an under privileged family of 6 move out of subsidized housing. The area in which the house was being built was not the greatest, however, they were moving away from an even worse area. The contractor's that were working on the house were very helpful and made sure the women were under "watchful eyes" at all times ;) My job was nailing the kitchen floor and putting in the cabinets.

I will be helping with my first HFH house this summer with my Alumnae chapter and hubby's frat. :D

I did Habitat one summer for the company I was interning for (a group of us went as a team) It was MAD hot and they had us outside painting siding and doors, moving toilets, etc. Then it rained an hour before we wrapped up. I came home sweaty, wet & covered in paint, but I had so much fun and met a lot of cool people, I wanted to do it again. I was supposed to a few weeks back but they cancelled my build date and my schedule didn't work out for the next two dates :(

It was definitely worthwhile, I felt real good (probably didn't smell that way, though) after it was over.

Yes I have worked on numerous Habitat homes in VA, IL and in CT!!! I've been involved with Habitat since 1996 (before I crossed) and have stayed committed with it. I am presently the chairperson for the Habitat for Humanity committee for my chapter. Every 3 months or so we work on homes throughout the greater Hartford area and it's very rewarding. Right now we are working on one home (family of 10!!!!) so that way we can be there to work on the house from beginning to end while having a positive impact on the family and their children.

It's very important that we (African Americans) get involved with an organization like Habitat since a majority of the recipients are of color yet the organization and its volunteers are predominately white.

Yes I have and that was the first time I realized I was afraid of heights LOL!
After I was helped safely off the roof I hammered some sort of tar paper on the outside of the houses. It was a big habitat development. This was a few years ago with my chapter and I had a great time for a great cause. I hope to do it again one day, after I have this baby that is!:D

I hear so many great things about HFH and I love to see people help their fellow human. I recently helped a local nursing home plant flowers and I had some fun with some seniors...they are halarious.

I helped caulk windows and paint a couple of houses in Homestead, FL a year after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 (many years before I became a Delta). It was part of some of the community projects I participated in as a member of the National Honor Society in high school.

Hurricane Andrew was an experience I will never forget. Some students from other schools had to come to my school and the rooms were overcrowded (55+). The local students volunteered their seats for the other students who had no school and/or home.

I LOVE Habitat for Humanity - it was tiring (many hours), but it was SO much fun helping out! :D

No doubt. The first one I helped build was in Summer of 1992 in Watts. Me and my LS were so gung-ho and excited.

I am the treasurer for my campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity. That said, I have a good time with the other people in the club, and all the other volunteers we meet.

A group of six drove to a house site up north and we managed to get a whole house vinyl sided in one day. We were tired as all get out but when I went to the Beverages for Adults Retailer that evening, my purchases had never tasted so good.

My PR person is working with me to invite the NPHC/NALFO/MCGLO folks to come give a hand. The best part of having our own campus club is the great amount of people we meet that we may not have met otherwise, campus and community wide.

I've been involved with Habitat nonstop since 1989. I started out bringing the builders/volunteers water and sandwiches and it has gotten to the point where I help with the carpentry work. I don't have a problem with doing any part at all with house as long as I am trained since I know that they are going to bring in specialists to clean up what the volunteers have done (from painting, to windows, to floorwork).

Anyone who participates with Habitat is going to enjoy themselves and will be very gratified with the work they've done because there is going to be a finished product you can look at. In addition, the sweat-equity/financial seminars and budgeting workshops that go on between the future homeowners and the organization is amazing.

I've participated in Habitat for Humanity and it was cool b/c I made some new friends and met people (none of my other friends wanted to do it with me). The first time was ridiculous because it was like a thousand degrees outside and they had me and 2 other people underneath the house putting in the installation. I was itchin' all over. But after it was over, we got to meet the woman and her little girl who would be living in the house and it made it all worth it (not to mention the free lunch we got :D ). The second time I remember I had a lot of fun. We painted the interior of a house and I helped mow a lawn for the first time. I really wanted to do habitat this year, but this year has been so stressed for me, it's impossible.

I helped out with habitat before I was a Delta. I had read a website (BeeJae's to be exact) that said if you didn't know any Delta's in your area, it was because you weren't out in the community working! Sure enough I met some Delta's when I started helping with HFH. I did the down and dirty stuff...I like that...I'm a tomboy at heart!

HFH is my favorite service project. We do it at least twice a year.
