Designing Women

Who could forget this exchange between Julia Sugarbaker and a beauty queen who thought just a little too much of herself:

JULIA: Excuse me, aren't you Marjorie Leigh Winnick, the current Miss Georgia World?

MARJORIE: Why, yes I am.

JULIA: I'm Julia Sugarbaker, Suzanne Sugarbaker's sister. I couldn't help over hearing part of your conversation.

MARJORIE: Well, I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone was here.

JULIA: Yes, and I gather from your comments there are a couple of other things you don't know, Marjorie. For example, you probably didn't know that Suzanne was the only contestant in Georgia pageant history to sweep every category except congeniality, and that is not something the women in my family aspire to anyway. Or that when she walked down the runway in her swimsuit, five contestants quit on the spot. Or that when she emerged from the isolation booth to answer the question, "What would you do to prevent war?" she spoke so eloquently of patriotism, battlefields and diamond tiaras, grown men wept. And you probably didn't know, Marjorie, that Suzanne was not just any Miss Georgia, she was the Miss Georgia. She didn't twirl just a baton, that baton was on fire. And when she threw that baton into the air, it flew higher, further, faster than any baton has ever flown before, hitting a transformer and showering the darkened arena with sparks! And when it finally did come down, Marjorie, my sister caught that baton, and 12,000 people jumped to their feet for sixteen and one-half minutes of uninterrupted thunderous ovation, as flames illuminated her tear-stained face! And that, Marjorie --- just so you will know --- and your children will someday know --- is the night the lights went out in Georgia!

CrimsonTide4 02-08-2004 09:26 AM

FYI: 1st Season of What's Happening on DVD was released on 2.3.04

Amazon has it for 4 $20.96. I want to buy that and the first 2 seasons of Good Times as my present to myself.

RBL 02-08-2004 11:09 AM

I have the 1st season of Good Times and will be picking up the second season(thanks CT4 for letting us know it is out). I searched on Amazon and I saw that the 2nd season has the episode where the Evans thought their neighbor was eating dog food and she brought them that meatloaf(that is by far one of the funniest episodes:D :D :D ) I might get the What's Happening DVD. Some DVD's I would love (some may or may not be out) are:

Golden Girls- probably one of the funniest shows EVER
227
Living Single- at least the first 3 seasons
Martin- all season except the one without Gina
South Central(whatever episodes they have)
Charmed- don't know why but I like this show
New York Undercover- I was so glad when they killed off the Puerto Rican guy( I hated his acting)
Married With Children
Amen

Yeah I watch waaaaaayyy too much TV:D

CrimsonTide4 02-10-2004 09:40 AM

While GC was down yesterday, I discovered that Walmart.com has both seasons of Good Times for $19.88:cool:

Impressed SF 02-10-2004 12:20 PM

What would I buy

I would buy:

Living Single
Different World
Golden Girls

Rain Man 02-11-2004 11:26 PM

I would buy....

Mama's Family

Night Court (only seasons 3 through 6--seasons 1 & 2 were kinda bland, and seasons 7 through 9 the show tanked after exec. producer Reinhold Weege left the series)

Small Wonder

Punky Brewster (only the NBC years--I didn't care for the syndicated years--1987-88)

WKRP--Gotta see that "turkey drop" episode one more time.

Police Squad--the 6 episode precursor to the Naked Gun movie trilogy was a timeless classic.

Maude--if for no other reason than hearing Donny Hathaway sing the theme song; it was the bomb, rivaled "Movin' On Up" and "Good Times" for most remembered theme song.

delph998 02-12-2004 12:07 PM

Silver Spoons
227
Different World
Martin
Cosby Show
Good Times
New York Undercover
South Central (RBL, that was a good one!)

One of my favorites is when Tommy Davidson is dressed in Hammer pants and dancing like Hammer on "Can't touch this" (I think that's the song). He gets all tangled up and ends up falling off the stage! First time I saw that I laughed 'til I cried! Don't know if this is from Season 1, but I might have to go get this DVD collection!

Jill1228 03-21-2004 10:58 PM

OMG, I am all over the In Living Color one!

I have season 1 and 2 of Due South (it was on US TV for 1 season and then switched to Canadian Television). Season 3 is coming out next month.

The Simpsons (I have the first Season)
I want to get
Married With Children
CSI (Vegas)
Law and Order (I love ALL the Law and Order series)
ER
Soap

I know this wasn't season one, but I liked the spoof they did about the Butt Out Jeans and Jamie Foxx was Prince, and he was singing, "I got a hole in my jeans!" Now every time they show the commericals for Prince's Musicology tour, Hubby and I laugh and start singing the Butt Out Jeans song.

*end Hijack*
