Only cause you're in college {GUTHRIE'S got me THINKIN}
the comments on GUTHRIE'S in the "Beta Phi Omega" thread got me thinking. What places have you eaten ONLY because you were in college and
(a) broke, (b) without transportation, or (c) went to school in a little RINKY DINK town where nothing stayed open late except _____? I had the opportunity to FINALLY visit FAMU and FSU in march and my friends *dragged* me to guthries. i could get up here and lie and say i've never been to a spot that ran like that (they let me get up and fix my own drink! BEHIND the counter! all the employees were wearing their club outfits! and i didn't see one pair o' gloves, a smock, or a hairnet in the entire piece!)... but imma be honest with y'all.... At NCCU the joint for me was Honey's, and the Waffle House on 55. People were forever fighting, walking out on their bill, or being arrested. At the waffle house i witnessed SEVERAL fights among the staff (including PHYSICAL altercations between men and women) but... since it was cheap, open, and close to campus - we kept going. name the restaurants you frequented in college that you wouldn't go back to... now that you have more "options." |

This is a little rinky dink town, but being that it is a colleg town, most places near the campuses stay open til 4 or 5. |
EVERY time I'm in Tally I have to get a Gut box with extra sauce on the side. Hits the spot everytime! :D :D
|
There weren't really any rinky dink places in Springfield, OH while I was there. We used to go to this smorgasborg (sp?) called Duff's, though.
I LOVE THE WAFFLE HOUSE!!! I wish they had them down here. I went last time I went home!! Yummy! :) |
What is it? Chicken? Burgers?
|
I didn't go away for college (stayed in NYC), so my eating habits basically remained the same.
What's a Gut Box? What's in it? |
Quote:
FeeFee...it's nothing more than some chicken fingers, fries and a piece of bread. :) It's just banging like that is all... |

White Castle
White Castle is where the college students go at least once. The burgers are tiny, squared, steamed, and has too many onion bits on it. It smells awful. They are really cheap, though.
Whenever you eat from there, you get stomach cramps and then some... NEVER AGAIN |
We use to eat at Denny's on Shaw ave. in Fresno, CA, after every event.
it was some what reasonable for college folks, but it stayed open late. But my fav place is a hole in the wall Mexican joint called Robertito's. hmm hmm good:D :D :D |

WAWA--I used to get their hoagies, rice pudding, entemanns's(sp?) cake or whatever else. I had a special fondness for their ice tea which my husband fondly refers to as 'liquid crack'. It's quite addictive. Open 24 hours a day!!!! |

Now that I'm here in GA we have Krystal's. Not the same but they try!! I just went to Tally back in March and I didn't go to Guthrie's. They took me to Whattaburger (I think that's how it's spelled) instead. That was pretty good but when I go back next year I will try out this Gut Box. It sounds yummy!! |

Ideal08, I love Waffle House TOO!! All my friends hate me because if we are hanging out til 5 or 6, we MUST go to Waffle House...and not the one by campus, the one by the Interstate cause they are way country and they know how to COOK. LOL. I only went to Denny's once and our waiter(ess?) was a dirty drag queen -- I am NOT making that up -- who smacked her gum and looked like her and bath water were having a trial separation. Like a week later it got shut down. |
GUTHRIES, TALLAHASSEE'S FINEST! I LIKE MY GUT BOX WITH NO SAUCE. I KNOW SOME OF YOU WILL PROBABLY THINK THAT'S WIERD. I DON'T LIKE THE SAUCE, EVEN THOUGH SOMEONE ONCE DESCRIBED IT AS LIQUID CRACK CAUSE IT WAS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. IF YOU'RE EVER IN TALLY, RUN TO GUTHRIES AND STOP BY AND SAY HI!

See what I started!
See what I started, anytime someone mentions Tally-Ho I am ready for Guthrie's! Librasoul, you hit the nail on the head. You would think Guthrie's was an afterhours club! It used to be packed after a night at none other than THE MOON! (For those who don't know The Moon is a popular night club in Tally). Who knew a restaraunt with only THREE things on the menu could be so popular. My order, a gut box, no slaw, extra toast, extra sauce and when I had a little extra money, a lemonade.
Another spot that I only went to in Tally was Whataburger! I truly hated their food, but sometimes they were the only place open and they were cheap. My husband and I used to go there to study in the middle of the night. (You know how those pharmacy students are). Then there was Wing Zone. They were my lifeline freshman year living in Palmetto South because nobody else wanted to deliver there (and of course, we freshman didn't have driving privileges). They had like 50-11 different flavors of wings. LOL Lastly, there was Sonic and Rally's. In my hometown, Rally's is Checkers but they have the exact same menu and commercials, it is funny. The best shakes ever. And at Sonic, you had to get one of those slushy things. |

librasoul, I can't believe you like Wingzone. Gross! Hooters for me always! Us Tally people should get together and start a new organization Guthries Phi Guthries. Other Tallahassee spots? Hmmm...oh Mo'Mo's, where the slices of pizza are as big as your head. Literally, y'all. Mo'Mo's is on Tenn St. before you get to Guthries. Guthries and Mo'Mo's damn those are the spots.

Now, White Castle. They have some good chicken rings!!! I love the ones that are also with Church's (that closed in Cleveland a LONG time ago) cuz I can get some chicken rings and some honey glazed biscuits!!! That is some good food after clubbin'. Alas, no WC in Chocolate City. |

Oh, and after 3 a.m., the only place that still delivers to FAMU is Gumby's Pizza (on Tennessee, before Tommy D's). That is the nastiest pizza on earth. It wasn't even good when you were starving. I had to learn that lesson the hard way. |
Re: Re: See what I started!
Quote:
Also, Tommy D's gave me the worst food poisoning ever. I have only been there once, but I avoid it like the plague after that. BW3's on Tuesday nights is the BOMB. And LOL @ you and the change...I might need to try that out... Well since there are so many Tally folks on here, what clubs does everyone hit? lol, I have been to like every one. My personal favorite is Club Deep on Thursday nights. |
Librasoul, I too avoid Tommy D's. There food is disgusting! And the prices to me, are very high considering what you get. I didn't like Chicken Kitchen either. I had it delivered, and by the time it got to me, the chicken was dry and the rice was hard.
Hey Librasoul, have you eaten at Moe's yet? Is it as good as I have been hearing? And what's up with Cicci's (excuse me, Club Cicci's) becoming the let out spot? As for clubs I don't really go to clubs. I've done the Moon, Clyde's and Costellos, and Sloppy Joes. However, I refuse to pay what Chubby's is asking so I won't be going there. Haven't checked out Skyline yet either. How is Club Deep? |
Quote:
Skyline is ghetto now. I went out there the first week it opened and it was nice. Hip hop on the bottom floor, salsa upstairs and good crowd. I went last Saturday and dudes were in tee shirts and shorts. I probably won't be going back there. Deep is really hot on Thursday nights. Good music, diverse crowd, and people know how to dress to go to the club. It is nice too, more like a Miami club than Tally. |

We need to have a get together....at Guthries! :p |
Here at GW in DC there's a place called DJ's Fastbreak. $2.00 pancakes hit the spot when brotha is BROKE!!
|
Quote:
As far as clubs, I don't go out too often because I'm broke. I do not have $10 to be throwing away every week to see the same people dance to the same songs. I haven't done Chubby's yet, even though I live around the corner. My friend went and said that all they play is "get crunk" music and that's just not my cup of tea. I used to do The Grove (now called upstairs) on Thursdays but, that's not really the spot anymore. I'm starting to fall out of the clubbing loop. |
When I was in the AUC the place to go for a quick snack was Stegall's--a grocery store with a little grill in the back across the street from Woodruff Library. They had good chicken wings and pretty decent hamburgers, although you KNEW you were going to have a stomach ache the next day. They had a sign in the window that said "Chicken is chicken, but the WANG is the THANG!" LOL
The other hot spot was the "Roling Store"--no, that is not a typo. It was this white van that had "Roling Store" hand lettered and painted on the side. Of course it was supposed to say "Rolling", but I guess home boy couldn't spell. LOL They had a hot pot and used to sell hot link sandwiches on white bread. Truly hungry broke days you called this little pizza place that was like a knock off Domino's, except their boxes only had 1 dot on it. That was the nastiest pizza known to man! |
OMG I can't believe I forgot about that damn Gumby's! My roommates always used to order that stuff. The crust was like Goodyear rubber.
As far as clubs go, it is hard to say because clubs in Tallahassee change names like every other week! It is crazy. Of course we used to go to the Moon, the Garden was a no-no (LOL did you know it is a dance studio in the day time?), they used to have this poetry joint on wednesday nights at Sloppy Joes that was really nice. Most of all we used to go to greek parties that were held at restaraunts like, the Alpha's had a party at Red Lobster on Monroe that was absolutely the bomb, they had a live band and everything, Kappas used to have parties at Lucy Ho's (Theta Eta) and Sloppy Joe's or the house (Alpha Xi). I went to an AKA party at the mexican restaraunt on Monroe ( I can't believe I forgot the name, that place was the bomb) it was on the corner of Monroe and Tharpe ( I lived in Jefferson Commons on Tharpe). Speaking of which, I was in JC the very first year it opened and it was party central! Y'all know what I really miss about Tally? 50 cent movie night at the dollar movie!! We don't even have a dollar movie here. Another thing for those famuans, all of the fashion shows, on the set, homecoming, epicurean shows, etc. If you are still a famuan or living in Tally, enjoy all of these things, because I tell you, I hated Tally when I was there, but I miss them now. Nupe4Life check your PM. |
Narcolept... You are bringing back sooooooooooo many college memories for me. I'm a grad. of FA MU and you know ain't no party like a FAMU party!! I remember freshman year my girlfriends and I made the mistake of going to a party @ the Garden...need I say more! We also attended a disastores party @ the patch! I remember Skinners (the chicken place) walking down the hill to go there. That places name has changed sooooo many times.Of course everyone hung out for "Grown Folks Night" @ the Moon! I also remeber Club Hollywood (can't remember the location) they had phones on all of the numbered tables so you could call one anothers table and get your mack on. HA!
Boy those where the good ole days. Okay back to the topic @ hand. Of course I got my GUT BOX W/SAUCE!! loved BW3's Krystals was a quick stop after the club and... Steak and Shake was cheap and awful..but the shakes were good I didn't like Rally's and there Kangaroo meat..LoL.. but I liked there Banana Shakes to this day I don't eat Shoney's for every road trip the schools dance company I performed w/(FAMU's Orchesis Contempary Dance Theater) would stop and eat there! |

Griff's was the ONLY place to go late at night. :o It was the ONLY place open after a party, other than Taco Bell. That place is STILL open. I used to live in Tech Station (right behind Popeye's), which wasn't too far from Griff's. |

A Griff's FRANCHISE? :o
I wish I would have known that. I was in Dallas at the end of March! Oh my word! :D |
i can't believe i left Cici's off the list. $2.99 all you can eat pizza buffet. Stale pizza, cheap salad, and all the bread you can eat. but it was a BLESSING to us back in the day! You talking about being hungry after band practice and broke because you don't have time to work (uhh - HBCU band IS a job ;) ) ?!?!
|
Blutang- when you mentioned bread it made me remember FAZOLI'S! When I was at FAM, I loved going to Fazoli's. They have the best breadstick out there. Now their sauces for the pasta was a bit on the watery side, but the bread made up for it. We don't have a Fazoli's here.
|
I like to hit up The City Cafe over on Old National when I'm in Atlanta and the Huddle House in Ft. Vallely during Homecoming at FVSU. When I'm really broke, I head to my kitchen and open up a can of pottish meat and some saltine crackers or maybe even a can of vienna sausages....sad but true.
|
what is...
pottish meat?
|
pottish meat or POTTED meat?
LMAO I don't think you REALLY want to know its ingredients. :o If it's potted meat, it's like ground up vienna sausages packed in a smaller vienna sausage container. :o |
