Summertime Poll

The million dollar question is:

Can you swim??

Dionysus 05-07-2003 02:40 PM

YES YES YES!!!

One of my favorite things to do in the summer. Can't wait! :)

AKA2D '91 05-07-2003 02:41 PM

heck no!

Why not?
I had too much hair to get under a swim cap. :o

CrimsonTide4 05-07-2003 02:45 PM

I can float!! LOL, I never learned to keep my head out of water and use my arms. I can only swim if my head is under water, which means I do not last very long.

Oh and swim caps do not keep your hair dry.

Steeltrap 05-07-2003 02:50 PM

Yes, but I don't swim anymore because I'm afraid of hair damage. My parents had a swimming pool, in-ground, put in our house in 1968. We were somewhat popular when growing up.
 :p

I CAN'T float for some reason w/out moving. My body automatically sinks. One of my grandmothers CLAIM that many blacks can't float because of certain fat distribution or something like that. Dunno if I believe that or not.

I kick while floating. Hell maybe I am doggy paddling.

Kisha 05-07-2003 03:03 PM

I can swim, but I won't stray too far in the deep.

FeeFee 05-07-2003 04:34 PM

Sorry - can't swim. :(

Gyrl7 05-07-2003 05:15 PM

I can't swim and I really don't want to learn how. I don't mind just sitting and chilling in the water but that is about it.;)

treblk 05-07-2003 05:31 PM

yes

I can swim..but I don't like the deep end:(

RedefinedDiva 05-07-2003 06:20 PM

No, I can't.

Gina1201 05-07-2003 07:05 PM

I can doggy paddle but that's about it.

brickhouse492 05-07-2003 07:10 PM

Like a fish. I learned @ age 5 in NC where I spent my summer.

LOL

Aren't yall scared that you all may find in yourselves water INVOLUNTARILY one day?

A few years ago at leadership retreat me and some people in my cabin and near by cabins took a pontoon boat out on the lake (a very large and deep lake too). I think only 2 out of 12 of us could swim. Well whaddya know it was too many people on the boat including one guy who was probably 400 pounds and the boat started sinking after we were about 120 yards off shore. Man, they started screaming and praying and panicing. Fortunately, we got help before it was too late. And, when we got back on shore some them started shouting and I think one person cussed out lifegaurd for allowing that many people on the boat. Honestly, I found the whole thing hi-lari-ous. But, if we didn't get rescued in time, there would've been some people in deep.....water

Everyone can float, the problem is that people who cannot swim often mistake the normal buoying as sinking. Never figured out how nerve-racking swimming can be until I tried to teach my aunt how to swim. Needless to say, she also does not think she can float either.

Yes, I can swim, learned how in Primary School. Nothing like swimming in the tourquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, though.  VaBeach can eat lead-- if people actually get any swimming done.

12dn94dst 05-07-2003 10:22 PM

Nope, can't swim. I nearly drowned learning how to swim when I was 7.

That's exactly why I learned how to swim. I almost drowned (in the shallow end of the pool no less), when I was in elementary school. I remember it vividly...picture it...New York, 1986. :p It was summertime and all of my cousins and myself were at the pool. Somehow I ended up falling in the water and I remember that my mouth wasn't shut and I inhaled a whole bunch of water. I remember kicking and stuff and I went to the bottom (prolly wasn't too far), and finally I just started paddling and kicking with at purpose and came back to the top. I remember once all the water got out of my eyes and I caught my breath while holding onto the side...all of my cousins were lined up on the side of the pool looking in the water like ...those MOFOs didn't even try to go get help!!! Some family...

9dstpm 05-08-2003 07:48 AM

I can........just barely. What little I learned I learned 3 years ago while working at a summer sports camp for minority children on my college campus. Hubby knows how to swim and our son wants to learn this summer, so we are going to sign him at the Y this summer. I guess it wouldn't hurt for me to brush up too. :p

kissy324 05-08-2003 09:23 AM

At the high school I went to, we were required to take two semesters of swimming. So, I was FORCED to learn. Truthfully, if it weren't for high school, I'm sure I would never have learned how to swim.

Nothing like the Caribbean Sea indeed! :D I can't even swim at the beaches in the states anymore.

Yes I can swim...like a fish! :p Me and my dad always go waaayyy out in the ocean.
I don't remember when I learned though. It seems like I've always known how to swim.
What's ironic is that my mom grew up on an island and can't swim worth a lick!

Kissy, I was forced to learn how to swim too, but I still forgot how to. I wish I could though...I would love to kick back in the water. That would be so fun!

Although it's north of the Caribbean Sea, Bermuda also has wonderful turquoise waters :D. When I was there almost three years ago, I splashed but wouldn't put my head under water.:p

Honeykiss1974 05-08-2003 05:43 PM

I can't swim at all. :(

cinamin1 05-08-2003 07:09 PM

I lived in south Florida (where its summer year round) all my life and have always lived 10 minutes away from the beach and NO I DONT KNOW HOW TO SWIM!

But tell me why i'm looking for a house with a pool? :p

Pandemonium 05-08-2003 09:20 PM

It was a high school requirement to pass a swim test, but I haven't swam since. Our chapter is planning a pool party as a fundraiser this summer, so I'll see if I remember how!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPP! My Sorors!!!!!!

Im_just_me 05-08-2003 09:32 PM

Can't swim at all...:(

Ideal08 05-08-2003 09:59 PM

Nope. Can't swim. Deathly afraid of water. I want to learn, though. I can do a little bit of stuff, like on my back. I think I could save my life if I had to, as long as I didn't panic, which I probably would cuz I'd be terrified.

DableST_1 05-09-2003 10:46 AM

Sad to say.......

I FORGOT how to swim:(

Kandi 05-10-2003 05:03 PM

I think I forgot how to swim as well. I stopped swimming when I was in High school. If my life depended on it, I can doggypaddle or float but that is about it. I don't like getting my hair wet. :p

Queencece 05-10-2003 11:19 PM

I can swim and I taught myself. I was told that I am a very good swimmer, but I havent lately because of what the water does to my hair.

I also love diving boards and deep ends. Its the best part!

Yes very well actually! Well at least I used to swim very well...i still know the fundamentals of swimming. I used to swim for the DC Department of Recreation & Parks Swim Team for 8 years, prior to quitting at 15 to start cheering .

That's me exactly!!! My parents just put a pool in a couple years ago and I have no desire to learn how. I wish I would've learned how when I was younger, but oh well...........I just like sitting on the side and getting my feet wet!!

Me too :o :o Plus I didn't get a "perm" until I was about 12 so my Mom wasn't about to wash and press and curl all that stuff every time I wanted to jump in a pool. Don't blame her. My hair was down my back waaaaaayyyyy back in the day and I was "tender headed"

I do want to learn though and hubby and I are thinking of toddler swim classes for Christopher.

D.COM 05-15-2003 12:03 PM

I never learned how to swim using arms and moving head from side to side (like regular swimmers).
I can only swim if my head is under water and coming up for air.
I cannot float just by staying in one location.
I can only float on my back while kicking.

Surprisingly, I did a forward flip in the 6-FT. deep area in a pool on a dare once! After that, I know that if I'm thrown into deep water, I can survive that and swim to safety, lol.

Now, if I'm at sea, that's a different story...

zetafg 05-15-2003 12:12 PM

Nope, can't swim.

But I can pose for a picture with my swimsuit next to the pool....splash a little water on me and you can think I went swimming. :D

I splash on the side and immerse my body in the water up to my shoulders...don't want to get my hair wet!!! ;)

eager2learn 05-15-2003 03:42 PM

I learned how to swim when I was eight. I don't go swimming too much though.
