Avril Lavigne
Has anybody seen her in concert?
A guy from work invited me to go with him, all expenses paid, so I said, "Sure, why not?" I don't really know her music, other than the songs that are out on radio. I know that there is a pit at her concert, which, luckily, we won't be in. I'm not expecting this to be anything more than a circus act. :D |
her CD is so awesome... its one of the only CDs I've bought in the past two years... I love her music but like you I'm not really into the pit thing... I've never seen her in concert but I saw her Hard Rock Live special on MTV awhile ago and she did a good job...
|
I hate that wannabe punk rock poser with the fire of a thousand suns.
Just sayin. |
Well, even if the concert does suck, it's still free! :)

I bought her CD for my kids and I will admit that I've caught myself listening to it more than once. I'll go one step further and admit that I like the song "Skaterboy" (excuse me, I mean sk8rboi  )
But as an angst-ridden punk artist, Avril doesn't cut it for me. Something about her image is too contrived. Like if Menudo was a solo act. And a girl. But you should go; good, free music is never a bad thing! :) |
She is not a PUNKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if it's for free, I'll go and see her.
If you really want to hear real punk, check out the following: Ramones, Sex Pistol, Bad Religion, NOFX, Rancid, Offspring, Misfits, etc. |
That IS strange...its like she dresses fairly punky but doesnt perform in the genre at all. Faith Hill and 50 Cent could both dress punked out, and even if they performed the exact same songs, theyd apparently be considered 'punk' by MTV
|
Bob Dylan and Luther Vandros could both go for a mohawk, wear punk cloth and kept their style, MTV would still call them punk. MTV used to be good (in the 80s and early 90s), now they suck.

If Avril is punk, then I'm Halle Berry. Even though her image is just as contrived as Britney Spears', the fact that she writes most of her own material makes me respect her a little bit more.
She's some kinda Canadian heroine though, which is at once disappointing and slightly freaky. ;) |
Avril doesn't write ALL her own material. She got her songwriting cred by sitting in the room while pop songwriters wrote her material for her.
She also isn't the one playing guitar on any of her songs on the album. She's FAKE. |

I like her music, I don't like her image/personality/style.

as for seeing her live, i've seen her on some live specials on tv, like mtv's new years eve, the billboard music awards, and the grammys and she was terrible. |

She started out as one of those Tiffany, Debbie Gibson soft pop girls and now she's hard and we are to believe it? What's really irritating is she's performing on Metallica Icon. SHe definitely will not rock!

i can't stand her look or her music.

Pssst.
Learn how to pronounce Bowie, honey. And Annie Hall called. She wants her tie back. |
I like I'm With You and Complicated and I don't even like the whole pop/rock type of music.
|
I hate to say it but I saw her play before she broke.... she must have been 15 or 16 at one of the commmunity events in Kingston (I do a lot of promo work around Ontario).... any-hoo
Yes she did play a guitar... not good but okay. Yes she did dress like that back then..... Her music was.... intresting.... sort-of pop-punk (except for the Christian rock song she sang) but catchy (nice back ground music for the bbq). As for her look and attitude... well I could rattle off at least 2 dozen sorority girls in Toronto that have the same attitude if not similar look, and have had for around 4 years now (god my sister has dressed like that for a good 5 years now). Okay rant done.... now a question: What do you mean by pronouncing Bowie? like David Bowie (singer) or Bowie Knife? |

Side note: Jesus is my homeboy. :p |
Is the way Avril dresses and Ontario thing? My sisters who go to UBC from Ont. seem very Avril-ish or am I just stereotyping grils from Ontario? (sorry if I am - but I always take the BC sterotype punches, so I'm just throwing a few back :p)

Shine, you're right, she is fake. My only consolation is that no one will remember her in 5 years.
One really sad thing is that this generation of faux punks will really think that this is what punk rock is. If you're in that category, go straight to Arya's post. (Dude, you rock!) |

Another funny thing is that most of these girls either like or hate Avril (not love)... because they realize she is somewhat packaged, but they do listen to her music (some secretly like my sister). |
Hey man, we're all cool. We're all punk snobs. Yes look at Arya's post for real punk.

Another great post! I read this thread backwards. |
When she's got make up on she's sorta cute but without she'd be blah.
|
Alright, so tonight's the night. Can you hear my excitement? ;) I will let you all know tomorrow how the concert went.

She performed here a few weeks ago. I'm told she does a cover of Green Day's Basket Case. Do I hear Billy Joe Armstrong banging his head against a wall?

Most of the people at the concert were 13 year olds in neck ties and vans. The screaming fans, oh gosh, the screaming. Surprisingly, Avril really does have a good voice. She played the guitar for two songs, I think, and ran across the stage throughout the other songs. The crowd seemed to love it though. Overall, the concert was surprisingly pretty good. |
Avril is hot and I want to make out with her.
