Question for the KazaaLite users:
When you started using Lite, did you start getting "Messenger Service" pop-ups? Because I did, and they are driving me crazy!!! My POW program can't get rid of them.

SATX*APhi 04-25-2003 09:00 AM

You can NEVER, EVER get rid of it. :( It's the real Kazaa trying to get you to download it.

Kevin 04-25-2003 09:15 AM

One of the drawbacks to Kazaa is that it includes various spyware/popup programs. You can use adaware to get rid of them but then Kazaa won't load. Nothing's for free these days.

AlphaSigOU 04-25-2003 10:00 AM

Communist subversive bastard spyware companies are having a running gun battle between their programs and and spyware/scumware elimination programs such as Ad-aware. Some will disable or cripple spyware elimination programs if it detects them during installation or operation.

I've never gotten this using kazaa lite, and i think it's been around 6 months . . . try for the latest version, perhaps that's eliminated it?

Also - for anyone who's looking, the website:

I think I have the most recent version. Could it be my comcast e-mail?

LeslieAGD 04-26-2003 11:06 AM

Thank You, Rich! :)

The message I get is every time I open Kazaa Lite: New version of Kazaa available. Click yes to download.

SATX*APhi 04-26-2003 04:51 PM

decadence, thanks for that info. I get those pop-ups at times also.

I used to get that all the time with Kazaa, but I don't get it with Kazaa Lite.

Okay, well I don't actually use Kazaa Lite or any similar software myself, but i had a look into the prob for you. No fix as such as far as I can see; just a workaround. Installing a program called ClickOff will automatically - once set up - automatically press the button for you and thus [quickly] close the windows. Here. If that doesn't fix it I'lll see if I can help further.

... Richard.

Dude, you are the bomb! :)

LeslieAGD 04-28-2003 09:47 PM

So far, so good, Rich! I haven't had any Messenger Service pop-ups! Yay! :)

Question: If I am using Kazaa, do folks from Kazaa Lite have access to me and vice versa?

I am going to download Kazaa Lite tonight though.

Question about Kazaa

Can people get into your shared folder and mess up the songs that you download?

Only if you give them certain read/write rights.

Good idea is to have the shared folder set with read only permissions -- people can view and download files but cannot upload to or modify any files. For most people, it's no big deal -- only the most determined cracker would find a way around.

I have something called the K-Lite Codec Pack...it sets you as a SuperUser and takes away all the dumb popups and ads. I haven't had a single problem with KLite because I've had this pack the whole time.

HOW TO GET RID OF THE ANNOYING MESSENGER POPUPS

You can get rid of the messenger popups without downloading a new version of Kazaa. I'm assuming you are running Windows XP most likely. To get rid of the pop ups, hit:

Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services (Shortcut)

Here a whole bunch of services that are local are in the new window. They should be in alphabetical order. Scroll down to Messenger and right-click on it. Highlight and click Properties . In this window on the "General" tab, there's a drop-down box next to "Startup Type" and here just change it from Automatic or Manual to Disabled and then click Apply then finally click Okay and you should not have any more Messenger pop up ads, trying to sell you a Messenger Blocker program for $30 when you can easily do it yourself with these instructions.

RUgreek 06-26-2003 01:34 AM

yea, i was gonna post a bit on disabling messenger service, , but most people don't like to mess with windows settings. I don't think these messenger pop-ups are coming from the program, it could just be your ip address is being hit more often because you connect to the kazaa network. I get stupid ads popping up all the time, i just ignore them. I should install that firewall software, but I'm lazy. Eh, kazaa lite is fun for simple things, emule does a better job IMO.

Kazaa sucks. I had it very briefly and didn't like it. Everyone should check out WinMx (www.winmx.com). It doesn't eat all your bandwith space like Kazaa (at least not to my knowledge) and there are no annoying pop up boxes. WinMx is actually the most like Napster to me. *Sigh* I miss Napster...
