Rio Life Part 2
Well, well, it's back again. (Need clarification? Please see the 'let's see how far we get thread') Except, we've changed our name and changed the girls :) It's now Sigma Zeta Mu and currently we have 7 very psyched girls. (whee!) we just need 5 more to sign on in 3 weeks so we can be ready to roll with the long-drawn-out-process of getting the local recognized by the university. We did a COMPLETE revamp on everything previously done. Well, I'll add more later, but I just realized I need to go to class :)

Wow
Congratulations! Starting an organization take a lot of guts and hard work. Seems like you and your group are going to be fine. Good luck and keep us posted as things progress. One question, are you planning on affiliating with a National? Just curous.
|
Oh yes, we ABSOLUTELY plan to affilate with a Nat'l. *nods*
|
Best of luck!
|
Best of luck TKE209Sweethrt!
Randomly wondering, is your motto 'Esse Quam Videri'? (saw it in your sig) I was talking to some friends of mine in a DPhiE colony and I think that is DPhiE's open motto too! |
Sweet! I didn't know it was anyone else's motto :) I was searching on the web for all the "open" stuff and came across that, it fits us well so far :) lol!
Oh, tomorrow we're all meeting for our very first well....meeting! I'm really excited! This will be the first time that ALL of use will be together :) |
Good for you! Keep us posted.
|
That's so awesome TKE209Sweethrt!
Best of luck!!!! :) |
lol...yes texas*princess that is dphie's motto....it means "to be rather than to seem to be".... it's also on our sisterhood badge.
To quote one of my favorite songs as an undergraduate.... "Esse quam videri, P.E.A.R.L.s We've got the greatest girls Oh how we love those dphie's...." There is a pharmacy fraternity with the same motto. I didn't realize it until I was senior and they had it on the back of one of their shirts. TKE209sweethrt....Are you still planning on affiliating with, I believe it was, Phi Sigma Sigma? Good luck!! Keep us posted! |
Esse Quam Videri is a great motto!!! :D
Check out www.dphie.org to see some more DPhiE info. :) Phi Sigma Sigma's open motto is Aim High. |
Bad news, we didn't have our meeting like we were going to have. I had a family emergency in which I had to cancel, so since I was getting 4 of the girls, we all went ahead and canceled it til sometime this week. But, don't worry, we WILL have it this week :)
Quick question, will anyone "mind" if we use that motto? As you can tell, I'm really anal about intruding on someone else's "stuff". Oh, it was quits on the Phi Sigma Sigma idea (so far), I really thought it would be in our best interest to stay away from the local glo's who have already been colonized by a national and then went back to local. (So unfortunelty no AST or PSS) Since the locals use their national past while pledging, I really do not want to intrude in anyway on them. Funny thing, we do have a Chi Omega legacy, she's pushing hard core for them, but dag on, we haven't even acquired our required number yet! |
Quote:
I'm an AST. I know for a fact that AST would love to expand. We don't have any chapter in Ohio. I would be proud to call you sister! |
Quote:
Good luck with your meeting!!! Hope your emergency has resolved itself in a good way! |
Thank you EagleChick19! I actually needed that! :) Right now we're getting a crap load of grief from a certain sorority on campus. Oye. Oh, one of the locals (Zeta Theta Chi) was formally AST, and they use alot of AST history in their pledging process. That's why I ruled out AST and PSS, locals had already been colonized by them, but then returned back to local status. :(
Fire1977- Oh, my sister was on call (she's a child-in-crisis social worker I guess you can say), therefore I was on call. She ended up being paged much earlier than what she anticipated, so I had to floor it to her house to take care of a 2 and 3 year old, hehe. On the phrase, see, this is why I'm wanting everyone to get together. I was placed in charge of getting phrases/mottos/colors/stone/flower/NAME/and everything else. Many do not know some of the basics yet. :( But for you all, here it is: Name: Sigma Zeta Mu Symbol: Star and cresent moon Colors: black, silver, blue (haven't decided on which shade however) Stone: Blue Star Sapphire (thanks to my bf, he bought me a BEAUTIFUL pair of earrings with this stone, fell in love with it and plus it worked very well with the colors and symbol :) ) Motto: Esse Quam Verdi (to rather than to seem to be) Well, got to go and call the girls, see when we can all get together. Ps. I have an idea, in case we do not get the 12 girls required by the end of this semester ( 1 week left) I was thinking to extend out "rushing" through next semester, that way (hopefully) we will have double the required amount if we get passed through AGC in the spring. Therefore, we, in theory, could have our first pledge class in Spring '04. Good idea? |
You should check out wishinhopin's thread in Rush about starting NBO. You might get some ideas about what you need to do and what to expect when starting a sorority. Good luck! :D
|
Good luck!!!!
Remember to keep your relations w/the other sororities good. don't be the one to blow them off. We have a local that just started and was tooting their horn about 'challenging the greek system'...and then they didn't even attend ONE greek week event. Haven't had anyone apply for rho lambda, or order of omega... they are starting to annoy the established chapters...though the established ones are bonding over it..hum...anyhow, keep up the good work!!!!! :) |
No one except for one sorority is really causing a stir. I hate to say it, but, they can rag on us all they want, we have a much better rep then they ever will. *nods* We all have friends in the other glo's and have already talked to many of the other members about this. Plus, it really helps that many of us are associated with TKE and have great friends in one of the oldest soro's on campus. The only big question we've been asked is why we haven't wanted to become apart of the already established sororities on campus. Now..that's fun part. :)

And something else--do you know why ZOX and the other one didn't stay affiliated with their National chapters? I'm just wondering, especially since you mentioned that they incorporate a lot of the Nationals' history in their pledging process. |

You know why, don't you? They know that if you succeed in getting a National to colonize your campus, they might not be able to compete. I don't know which group you're referring to, but I've heard less-than-flattering things about most of them so just take it with a grain of salt. Dana, remember the PNM stalker I was telling you about. It's her sorority. I like a lot of the girls in that group, but she and a couple of others are the ones trying to make it difficult. Oh, pertaining to your first statement, you're completely correct. I mean, it's gotten to the point where I'll be walking across campus and girls will com up to me asking me about it. One, they much rather be in a National and two, many do not like the others on campus. We have the "Stereotypical's", "Uglies", "Who?", "They're dying aren't they?", and the Delta Theta's (I still love those girls to death :) But they're just not for me ) Oh, the nick's are from newbies on campus..oye.. Is it because you want to be part of a National group? That for one is a "yes", but also locals can get away with ALOT in the matters of hazing. When I pledged, I was hazed, and one of my other girls she was hazed severely. Also, many of us want to chance to go to other schools and call others "sisters" <- sappy, but true And something else--do you know why ZOX and the other one didn't stay affiliated with their National chapters? I'm just wondering, especially since you mentioned that they incorporate a lot of the Nationals' history in their pledging process. That's the one mystery I still can not unravel just of yet. One of my "new" best buds is a ZOX and me and her made plans to hang out, so I'm going to make sure I ask her. (I would have asked her before, but she's pretty upset with them right now) One of the reasons I HAVE heard of them disassociating themselves from Nat'ls is do to the money. That's basically the only reason I have been able to get out of them. Oh, tomorrow, FINALLY the first meeting of everyone :) |

First Meeting :)
Well, last night we had our very first meeting with -everyone- there :) Oh man, it freaking rocked! Everyone got along and was acting like best friends after like 5 minutes! You would not believe how stressed I was about everyone meeting eachother! We ended up hanging out at my pizza place for over an hour, then when we drove back to campus we hung outside for over an hour again. :D I mean, dag on, we completely clicked together, it's was so unearthly, hehe. It ended up being a COMPLETELY social meeting, that's for sure. We're going to get together next week to split up duties and actually have a somewhat constructive meeting, haha!
Oh, I told my mom about this "sorority deal" just about an hour ago. She's actually VERY supportive and even wants to be apart of contacting of the parents of future pledges and all! Talk about being weird...I mean...she was VERY anti-greek after my experience with pledging and even more so with MTV's SL 1&2. I think she's just wanting to help me make letter-shirts, that's our 'mother-daughter' time, :p ~ The now VERY happy and relieved Kayla |
Congrats!!! I hope it goes well.
-Michelle |
I'm so excited! :D Since I'm kinda sad about going alum soon, it's fun for me to read about people who are just starting their sorority experience...and in this case, it's especially interesting because you're starting from scratch!
Some advice for you...when my chapter was still a colony, our National consultant (who was awesome) constantly stressed publicity--we were encouraged to wear our letters as much as possible, do stuff like car washes to get our name out (and make $ as a bonus), anything to get people to recognize us...in a positive light, of course. ;) It worked pretty darn well for us, so I think you really should get on it ASAP. You're not NPC yet, so that means you can recruit over the summer. Oh, and about the sorority nicknames...I don't think it'd take me long to guess which one goes with which. :p Except the one about the group that's dying...I haven't been around enough to get that one. |
Quick Rant
This is going to be quick due to finals week...yea.
Okay, so I'm talking to one of my girls and I ask her when she's going to be free for a meeting. Well, now she's actually SCARED to go because she says the othr sororities are giving her a hard time and that they don't support this. GRRR!!! Ya know, I'm getting closer and closer to just saying f*ck it and going to Ohio University. Also, if theses "other sororities" have a problem with it, they need to FREAKIN' talk to ME! I'm the head of this and if they have any questions they need to see me, not just rely on some rumors they've heard. GRR! To the ones who have talked to me, everything is cool, but dammit people, I wish they would grow some serious balls. I'm trying to keep this together and the PROPER info out, but dag on it...grrr. ---end of rant--- |

All I can say is, get SZM recognized as an "official" group ASAP (step on some toes and play dirty if you have to). And tell all your members when the meeting is, and if they're in, they WILL show up. Sorry if I sound grouchy, but I have had a really crummy day as well--it's Finals Week here too--so I can definitely commiserate with you. |
Good Luck!! Please keep us posted.:D

If I may add my 2 cents...

My local group had a hard time on our campus...and although I wasn't around for the entire time leading up to the school calling us a local, I was around when we were still a local group. Many of our sisters, and myself, sadly lost friends over what we believed in, our right to form a 5th sorority. We used to get 'hate posts' on our website guest books, some girls apts were egged, people had bumper stickers w/our letters taken off the car, etc etc etc. But my whole point of this is not to scare you or anything, but to actually say that it made us stronger as sisters. The more people put us down, the further we pushed and the more determined we got. After a semester, the other groups realized we were extremely strong and we weren't going anyway, so they finally voted for us to become a national GLO. There are always going to be people in your way, but giving up will let them win. Stick to your guns. On a positive sign, most of the girls that had huge objections to us have now graduated, and we the other sororities are getting used to us, and I daresay, we might actually be liked, mainly due to the fact that many of our new members, and the other groups new members missed the 'bad blood' that happend. TKE209Sweethrt: please, feel free to PM or email me at any time. I've been there and would love to help (in some very very small way) another group succeed. BEST WISHES!!!! |
Sorry it's been so long since I posted! Summer sessions at school have taken over a big chunk of my life, lol! Well, all of us but 2 live within 15 min's of eachother so it's easy to get together. We're planning on a trip to Kings Island here soon, but if the weather doesn't ease up we'll have to plan something indoors, lol!
Later this week or early next week we're going to get together and work on the constitution and all. We all have so many ideas yet we just need to calm down and put them on paper! PS: We may be changing the name again...lol... |
I hope things continue to go well with your sorority! Best wishes!
|
I can't wait for your next post--it's so exciting to read about! I wish all the sisters of SZM the very best! As far as any negativity thrown your way, it's a great lesson in learning to carry yourself with dignity under any conditions. Not everyone's college experience contains such an amazing lesson and experience, so although it's uncomfortable now you'll be the better person for it in the long run. In addition your sisterhood will be that much stronger as well. Good luck.

*sings and dances* I'm in a gooood mood, I'm in a goooo mood..."
Guess what... :) I was talking to the AGC president today (whom I didn't know was the pres, I thought she was just the pres of her sorority). Well, I decide to tell her about SZM...oh my gawd...she was SO happy!!!! In her own words, "I was wondering when you guys would get your stuff done, that way I could go ahead and help you if you needed it and I could go ahead and pass it through AGC." I mean, I as SOOOOOOO happy!!!!!!! She even said she'll work it out in which we won't have to have the required 12 members when we're accepted and all. Right now aI'm loving her so much! See, thankfully she knows that many of my girls have rushed the other sororities and didn't feel really "in". She was like, "Ya know, everyone has their own group, you shouldn't settle for something that you don't even feel comfortble in." I'm so loving her right now, this just puts me on cloud nine! She did give me one piece of advice, that we shouldn't go w/ AST of PhiSS. It would rub the other locals in the bad way too much, and I agree. *nods* Pss: Now we have 4 out of the 5 votes we need to pass!!! |
Congratulations, that is really great news for you. Can't wait for the next update!
violets |
That's awesome! I guess my stepdad really is right when he insists that "it's all about who you know"! :)
I agree about staying away from AST and PSS...I mean, since the other groups used to be chapters of them and all. With those two out, that still leaves 24 NPC groups to pick from, so surely that won't be a problem. |
I'm so happy to hear things are going great!!!!
Continued best wishes to you and your sorority! |
it's been a good day
Ahh....ya know what..I'm feeling so dag on Greek right now.. *grins*
Well, gave a peace offering to a GLO who -does not- want us in. See, I'm a HUGE picture person, and I had taken a nice pic of all of them ( on a 5 x 7 ) and since today was Freshmen Orientation, I purposely gave it to them today so they could use it to show PNM's. Well, when I gave it to their pres, I got a VERY surprised look! :D But..I was told by one of my girls that majority of them were still giving me the evil eye...even when I was teling freshmen about how nice they are and the other sororities are! :( I did take advantage of spreading the KGD love around though :) Since I was helping PAT out, I was also explaining Rush and all to some very eager freshmen. And guess what...we have a new girl that is now HARD CORE Kappa Gam!!! Like, she and her friend hung out w/us for over 4 hours!! Oh, found another loophole in Greekdom at Rio, I'll explain that later..teehee  Oh, another thing, I guess that even if AGC doesn't recognize us, if we appeal to the President (who thankfully loves me) and he says yes, then we're in at Rio. Another thing....it looks like we have ALL THE VOTES WE NEED!!!!!!!!!! WHEE!! Kappa Gam love, Kayla |
GOOD LUCK!!!!
Go Kappa Gamma Delta!! |

Funny thing...my lit teacher read my tarot cards for me for my birthay the other day...well..it came up TWICE that someone was going to betray me. Guess what...it did. :(
It ended up being a VERY close friend of mine who's a brother of my boyfriend. He told another friend of mine that "They don't know anything about becoming Greek" and well, other things of the same topic. :( :( It kinda sucks that even though this has practically been in the works for 2 looooong years people still think it's just a fad. Well, I've gotta go, mostly I thought I should post this development and now I'm going to cheer myself up for my b-day. ~Kayla |
Well..strange thing..we got some new girls :) So far here they are:
1. Kayla (duh..me) 2. Erika 3. Erica 4. Jodi 5. Lyndi 6. Laura 7. Liz 8. Krysta *new* 9. Jessie *new* 10. Crystal 11. Jen *perspective* 12. Jenny *if boyfriend "lets her"* ..we got Crystal a week ago, Krysta yesterday and Jessie today! My girl Erica is one kick ass rusher!! |
right on...
when's the final vote???
all the best. :D |
