Any job a woman CAN'T do?

Just wondering. Does anyone believe there are jobs or professions that woman are simply NOT properly equipped to partake in? Why?

bethany1982 04-24-2003 02:04 PM

I can't think of any.

Kevin 04-24-2003 02:05 PM

Most of your 'traditionally male' pro-sports I'd say that women aren't really able to compete on the same level as men. Other than that...

Roseblum15 04-24-2003 02:17 PM

Male underware model, a women just can't fill them out as well as a man could. ;) :)

bethany1982 04-24-2003 02:19 PM

Male underwear model... Why didn't I think of that?

The1calledTKE 04-24-2003 02:20 PM

condum fitter? male stripper?

33girl 04-24-2003 02:47 PM

Sperm donor. :D

Test Patient for the Hair Club for Men

bethany1982 04-24-2003 02:51 PM

With graduation right around the corner, perhaps this thread will open up new career opportunities otherwise left unexplored for countless guys... sperm donor, now there’s another one that I would have never thought of.

PSK480 04-24-2003 02:52 PM

Testicle donor, I heard that they're going for $75,000 a pop down somewhere in TX. We looked at it for a chapter fundraiser, get a brother willing to give one up and donate some of the money to the chapter. A few had mentioned that they were thinking of doing it for the money and then whatever is left over after paying down debt they would donate to us.

Grand President, Grand council member, or vp, exec director, etc(higher up positions) at an NIC HQ.

Rudey 04-24-2003 03:45 PM

Firemen.

DeltaSigStan 04-24-2003 04:06 PM

Naw Rudey, on one of my classes, there's this Amazon of a woman who's about to graduate, and she's a fireman. She's built, and she looks like she does a good job.

Lady Pi Phi 04-24-2003 04:13 PM

I don't know about other places but here in Toronto they are always looking for female firefighters

Rudey 04-24-2003 04:16 PM

Yeah, well NYC is different. I think Chicago is the same too.

-Rudey
--Now if they could pass the tests that would be fine.

volgirl2376 04-24-2003 04:16 PM

I think they meant fireMAN...not firefighter in general :)

AlphaSigOU 04-24-2003 05:54 PM

They do have female firefighters in 'Fidney' (FDNY), though they are the exception, rather than the rule; many are also paramedics/EMTs.

In 1983, Capt Brenda Berkman led a lawsuit to force the Fire Department to develop a new physical test that women could pass. The court order of such stupid hiring practices have expried for a while now. If I remember correctly, women had trouble carrying a heavy dummy up/down a certain amount of stairs (a test to simulate work in a skyscraper).

There are 28 women in the FDNY, out of a total force of 10,500 (0.26% of the FDNY). Only eight women have come on the force since the first group of women entered training in 1983, Ms. Berkman said.

If you can pass the test, then fine. If you can't find another occupation.

-Rudey

I remember overhearing it in an episode of 'Third Watch' -- it wasn't said by the firefighters but by the police in a FDNY/NYPD basketball game. (On the other hand, NYPD has other less flattering names to call the FDNY: "Rubbermen" and the "Red Menace". That was well before 9/11 though.)

aephi alum 04-24-2003 06:25 PM

I find myself partially agreeing with Rudey. On the one hand, if you're actually in a burning building, you'd better be prepared to get yourself and whoever you're rescuing out. A fire doesn't care if you have a penis or not.

On the other hand, there's no reason that women can't work with the fire department as EMTs, drivers, dispatchers, etc. if they don't meet the most stringent physical standards.

If anyone, male or female, has the desire and can do the work, more power to them.

Lady Pi Phi 04-24-2003 07:16 PM

In Toronto they are always looking for women for any of the emergency services, not just the fire department. So iladies if you want to be a firefighter, cop, Paramedic, come to Toronto.

SilverTurtle 04-24-2003 09:38 PM

To the best of my knowledge, in Ohio the tests (where you carry dummies through burning houses, down stairs, etc.) are exactly the same for everyone, male or female. [My knowledge is from a few years ago, I don't think it's changed]. You don't see many female firefighters, but there are some. And they hold their own with men. If they didn't, they wouldn't be there.

With some of the exceptions we've seen on this list, like sperm donor ;) , I don't think there's anything men do better than women. Men may have a general natural physical advantage in things like sports or being a firefighter, but I've seen some tough women that surpass a lot of men, and some wussy guys who would do worse than me (and I'm not all that fit). I don't think you can limit it to male/female. Because every person's different.

xok85xo 04-24-2003 10:26 PM

i really don't think a woman could be santa claus

or the strongman in the circus.

A Catholic priest

AlphaSigOU 04-24-2003 11:31 PM

If you choose a career in the military, women are currently barred from the following jobs:

Army: infantry, special forces (Green Berets, SFOD-Delta)
Navy: submarine service, special forces (SEALs)
Air Force: special forces (pararescue, combat controller)
Marines: infantry, special forces (force recon, sniper)

Female combat pilots in any of the services can fly any type of combat aircraft but are barred from flying special operations combat aircraft (MH-53 'Pave Low', MH-60 'Pave Hawk", MH-47 'Chinook' MH-6 'Little Bird'). They can, however fly special operations support aircraft, such as the MC-130 'Combat Talon'.

Don't be an ass. My roommate is a valet and she is the top person in her division. She's the only one that has never had even a minor accident.

Or look at your local women rugby team. they scare me.

teke4life 04-25-2003 12:09 PM

i've never seen a female bouncer, or a collector for a loan shark. those seem to be pretty male dominated jobs. oh, i don't think that women can be in the mafia either. my uncle used to also own a junk yard, and i can't remember ever seeing a woman in there.

and why are they all guys that do the nature shows? are marty stouffer and jacques costeau misogynists? well, there is the croc hunter's wife, but she's more of a co-star.

hey, that's super. Maybe she should go faster than 40 clicks/hour.

I take offense to that. As a 5'6", 100 pound girl, I am lighter and faster than any one else on the team. Instead of having to worry if I can weather the tackles, I dodge them.

Most of the girls on the team aren't very manly, tall, or heavy.

Actually, there is a big push in the city and suburbs to get female firefighters on board. Many towns are trying to recruit women, but not having much luck, namely because female fire science students are still few and far between.

James 04-26-2003 11:28 AM

Or girls field hockey . . . *shiver*

I have worked as a female "bouncer," (really i work the door checking ID's and taking cash) and I am only 131 lbs. The guys that come through the club always tell me I look intimidating, lol. I have never had any problems.

Now as far as security that patrols the club, I have never sen any females except female cops.

I *should* know better... after all I'm a native Noo Yawker, even though I live in Texas! :)

"Rubbermen" and "red menace", as well as 'fidney' are less-than flattering names given by Noo Yawk's Finest to their companions in Noo Yawk's Bravest -- usually not within earshot of 'em, except during the annual FDNY/NYPD football or basketball games :)
