What Makes You Feel Grown?
Besides paying bills :(. . . what are things you do that just make you feel grown?
1. Laying around in my pajamas all day if I want to without feeling like my mama is going to make me get dressed or do chores. 2. Eating dessert before dinner 3. Eating fast food as much as I want to, when I want to. I don't have to say, "Ma, can we; Ma, I want; Ma, please can we. . . " :p |
-I think about every single article of clothing I have on (including undergarments) and ask myself who paid for it. I knew I was grown when everything was paid for by ME.
-having children makes some people feel grown. I guess the responsibility of caring for another person. -Buying alcohol -when I don't have to ask my mother or father for anything -When I tell the folks I'm going somewhere rather than asking them. -When you can pick out the kind of car you want and actually get it. |
Working on my front yard makes me feel grown:D
Being able to discuss with my dad my mortgage and equity issues being able to charge someone else rent:p and being able to say I did all this on my own (with support of course) |
What made me feel grown once I became legal at the tender age of 18 at that time wasssssssssssssssssssss
- I was able to buy alcohol if I wanted - I could just walk in a club after I paid and not be carded - No longer needed working papers to work, just apply for work - Take the day off from work and laugh at the kids going to school - Visit my old high school and just roam the halls and the administrators just wave or break their neck to speak to me. Instead of "Where is your pass?" - Call people by their first name in stead of Miss, Mr. or Mrs So and So...... - Finally, after 18+ years of hearing it you can finally say it, GO ON SOMEWHERE AND PLAY THIS IS GROWN FOLKS CONVERSATION!!!!!!!!:D :D :D  |
What makes me feel grown....
I can come in my house whenever I get ready to. I can have company whenever I want to. I can talk on the phone whenever I want to. (you can tell what kind of rules I grew up with). Being asked to bring a dish to the family gathering. |

Okay others: LEaving out of the house @ any time I want with out having to ask permission. Conversations with my mother -- now we have always been able to talk but now it is on a whole oter level. Making and taking my own trips. Doing my laundry when I want. The phone can ring @ any time of night (I know I was not the only person with a phone curfew :o) The phone ringing and me not answering it When people call and ask to speak to the woman of the house Ordering a drink Getting carded :D |

Telling family folks EXACTLY how you feel!!! Sometimes people think you are still 5 or 6 years old....NOT! I'm a grown so and so woman! I'm not so and so's baby girl anymore! :p |
My turn...
The fact that I can put folk in check who disrespect my house and I can throw 'em out and say, THIS IS MY HOUSE, DAGNABBIT!, knowing the deed to the house has my name on it. Likewise to kids who like to cut through my yard, I can say, Get yo' butt off my proppatay (read: property). Side note: when I first moved in my house, I took the theme song to WOSU's talk show called "Open Line" and sang, Livin' in my house, oh yeah, it's my house and I live here (repeat). Iiiiiiit's my houuuuuse, aaaaand I liiiiiiive heahhhhhh, oh yeah now, oh yeah now. Other things: The phone rings and I know it's for me (as opposed to me playing secretary for someone else). I can watch any movie I want to without having to resort to the old "push-button deception" trick, if you know what I mean. Having guests come over any time I want. Coming in as late as I want. STREAKING!! *hee hee* Blasting game show theme songs (and 80s music) on full volume till 2 and 3 in the morning with me dancing like crazy and no one can complain. Leaving sound bites to TV game shows on my voice mail. More later |

Feeling you my sistah :o :o !!!!! Drinking soda before 12:00. I could NEVER drink pop before noon. I remember being a freshman in college and wanting a soda so bad one day and I looked at the clock...it was 11:30am. Then it struck me - I'M AWAY AT SCHOOL. I CAN HAVE POP WHENEVER THE HAYLE I WANT TO. I practically ran to the vending machine. I think I almost called my mom and slurped in her ear. (Notice I said almost) Talking to my Mom about my baby boy and getting Mommy tips from her makes me feel grown. |
1. Drinking wine on the weekends (well sometimes the weekday, darn ninth graders)
2. Writing checks 3. Coming and going as I please/ 4. Nobody sends me money any more 5. Planning trips. 6. Going to bed early, hey I see why my parents went to bed before I did. 7. Not being able to hang like I did when I was in school. Man for Easter weekend I went to the Casino and after we ate everybody was falling asleep, didn't even try to play anything! |
1. Grocery shopping and buying whatever I want. Certain things my mother just does not buy anymore.
2. Getting my nails and toes done. 3. Cleaning up my room when I want to. 4. Feeling Wonderful on the drinking a glass of wine. . . whenever I do I feel like such a lady. :p Plus I no longer have 9th graders to be my reason. :D |
Not feeling like going to school and not having to fake a hoarse voice or a fever.
Paying credit card bills Knowing that, although I don't have to be, I am independent |
When I was little, I knew when my mother got paid. I'd ask for money, she'd say no and say that she didn't have any money. I'd say "but you just got paid!" Mama, I so understand the meaning of that now :D
The fact that I have a budget makes me feel grown. In school, I would just buy that new outfit without thinking twice, now I have to look in my checkbook to make sure I can afford that outfit. Paying my rent is more important than new clothes anyday... Other stuff: My 9 to 5 job My business cards When I go home to visit and stay out a little late, my folks don't question me. I don't have homework anymore, I can watch all the tv I want cuz I don't have to study. :p To all the college students who can't wait to graduate: being grown is very OVERRATED, I do miss school sometimes. |
How about becoming a role model for the people you considered role models when you were coming up? I just got my car title from the finance company in the mail on Monday and I still can't believe it!
I'm 30, but my dad was the first person I called -- after calling Bank One to make sure they hadn't made a mistake. He sounded so proud, and I hope he's inspired to knock his note down too. (Don't nobody tell my cousin, tho -- he'll have his hand out in a heartbeat!) |
Here's another one:
Last Thursday was Take Your Daugther/Son to Work at my job. I brought my daughter to work and volunteered as a group leader. There were some instances whereas the children in my group tried to "cut up". I kindly told them "I know your parents, so you better behave or else I will let them know how you were!" The expressions on those kids' faces were priceless, b/c they didn't know that I was an employee, they thought I just came along to volunteer. |
This morn in McD's I asked some teenagers to cool it with the improper language. My mother gave me this, "I'm so proud" look and it just went to my head. I felt allllllllllll grown up.:D
|
My beautiful, brown-eyed daughter. Although she's 8 years old, it's sometimes still hard to believe I'm actually a mom!
These 2 dadgum car payments! Being able to really talk with my mom on an adult level without hearing her tell people "she may be taller than me, but I'm still the mama!" |
The kid who used to I babysit across the street has a car, job, and has possibly lost his virginity.:( I feel old indeed.

2. I'll be 30 this year and I still catch grief when I try to come and go as I please. I care for my 85-year old granny and she makes me feel bad when I'm out and about! :( 3. The last time I received any money from people outside of my house was when my mom passed away in 2000 :( :( :( 4. I try to go to bed early, but sometimes it doesn't work. Believe me, I FEEL IT in the morning! 5. I can't hang anymore...so sad... |
my mom and I were watching a movie... the daughter in the movie was narrating and she said something along the lines of her and her mom being adult friends, not so much mother and daughter anymore.... I leaned over and asked my mom if we were adult friends... she said yeah... that made me feel grown up cuz she thought I was grown up!!! :)

1). When I was living with my mom, her making me clean up my room/the kitchen etc. would make me feel like a child. Now I take pride in keeping my house clean, and it makes me feel grown when people come in and say "Dag, your house is always so neat!"
2) Knowing that if I don't happen to clean up before I leave to go somewhere...NOONE IS GOING TO SEE IT!!! Things will be exactly the same way I left them! 3) Buying groceries and cooking real meals, I think I have gotten to be a better cook since living on my own. 4) Clocking in everynight, and getting a regular paycheck. 5) Getting mail/bills/voicemail! 6) Being able to tell my mother about something in my life and when she starts in on me, say "Thank you Mother, but I wasn't asking for your approval!" 7) Slipping in a curse word while talking to G-Ma and after excusing myself and expecting a reprimand, I get a laugh and a "That's my grandbaby, at least you got it honest!" 8) Deciding at a moment's notice to go out of town and just gas up Silvie and hit the highway...not asking for anyone's permission. 9) Being asked to HOST the family dinner! (My family is supposed to be coming down for Thanksgiving this year!) |
What makes me feel grown.....
1) Having holiday dinners at my house
2) Going on vacations without the fam 3) Showing people the door in my house when they get on my nerves 4) Writing checks 5) Planning a summer schedule for my son (ie. camp, vacation with grandma, swimming lessons, etc) 6) Doing what I want, when I want!! |

What makes me feel grown...
seeing my friends marry and have children.
|
1)Telling Kids I watched grow up good advice,
2) telling little kids stuff my elders told me. (I.E: quit running in church, quit fighting your cousins etc, etc) or my personall favorite: 3) being able to sit around the grown folks when they used to make us "go out and play" and "quit looking in grown folks mouths" Fraternally, |
~Paying Bills
~Working and earning $$ ~Giving my mom advice sometimes. ~Dressing grown (make-up and high heels) ~Going out or coming home when I want without having to explain anything. ~Being called Miss. or Ma'am makes me feel grown, but it also makes me feel old. :p |
I know full well I'm not grown yet, I don't care if I'm in college, I still need my parents help. But I do have my moments of responsibility....
Staying up writing papers nearly 10 pages long (remember in high school when 5 pages made your mouth fall open?) Buying my own groceries Dating (I didn't start till college) Filling up/washing my own car Never having to say "Well, let me ask my parents and get back to you." Having my mom offer me a drink instead of sending me to my room so I won't see her drinking ....Oh yeah, and having a HUGE crush on Chris Brown, but thinking "Ugh, he's only 16." |
What makes me feel grown:
Having my car payment debited electronically each month from my account (this is the only bill I can do this with, too scared to do the others) Having my grandmother depend on me for errands Funny story-My mom always said that I was grown ONLY when I moved out of her house. So when I was living there after college and had my job and car I still wasn't grown to her. When I moved out I was contemplating on when I would let her know that I was grown because she neglected to acknowledge the fact  We were at my grandmother's house so I decided to let them know at the same time. I proudly announced myself, and my mother called me over to her chair. Thinking she was going to congratulate me, this lady PUNCHED ME IN MY THIGH!!:o It hurt too! I didn't care though, cuz even with a hurt thigh I was still grown :D Later on that night I of course accidentally ran into the footboard of my bed and bruised the exact same spot where my mother hit me. Boo. |
1. Paying the mortgage
2. Paying bills 3. Coming home when I please |
Buying my car
Paying my car insurance Paying my bills online monthly Buying all of my clothes and food Being able to order a drink Being able to come and go as I please I'M ENGAGED :D Dressing grown (I can honestly say my taste in clothing has made a change) The fact that I can no longer stay up all night and be nice and perky the next day. I must go to bed early. |
Paying rent
Cleaning when I want to and not because my mom makes those faces when she walks past my room Paying bills :( Buying liquor and not getting carded!!!! whoo hoo Filing taxes and actually being able to do something with the refund. Being able to come and go as I wish Having company whenever I want to!!! :p Having to wash dishes and take out the trash (company does it when he comes over!!) ETA: Being able to stay awake during the sermon and realizing that what the preacher is saying relates to me. (I ALWAYS fell asleep in church) |

I simply can't hang like I used to. I start getting that drowsy eye and then I'm out. I also feel grown when I have the pleasure of talking to my grown man about grown folks stuff - instead of these little knuckleheads I used to deal with. |

Another grown folk moment is your own car, your OWN responsibility. After 6 weeks of having my car, something is wrong with the drive belt (its making a chirpy noise) and my warranty wont cover it until it actually breaks....sooooo I may have to come out the pocket with $200 :( |
I don't know why but pumping gas makes me feel grown. I guess it's one of those silly things that I saw my parents do.
Also - going to Home Depot/Lowe's - going to the bank - wearing heels everyday - walking up to my car at the end of the day - having a lot of keys (another silly one...LOL) - getting estimates for housework on MY house |
Quote:
LOL....that's true for me except the rugrat I used to babysit has a wife and a set of twins! |
I have friends MY AGE that are grandparents   . Shoot my mom is 68 and still isn't a grandparent....:p
