"Your major is sorority..."
So my mom, who doesnt understand greek life at all, said this to me many times...
Most of us on GC are completely obsessed with their org and with greek life in general. Are you one of the only ones in your chapter? I see GC as more of a support group for those of us who are greek and extrememly proud of it, those of us who will be wearing our badges/lavilers/letters til the day we die... And I HAVE to marry a fraternity man because I would drive a non-greek NUTS... |
My mom is the same way. When I told her I would definetly need another semester to finish school, she asked me if my sport was my sorority ( both my brothers play college football and took an extra year to finish school b/c of it).
Almost everyone in my chapter is like this though. The few that aren't are sometimes considered weird.. not that there is anything wrong with that. |
I'm not the only one in my chapter who's like that.. but I was a counselor at a camp last summer and a lot of the other counselors were greek as well and I would totally try and talk about it with them and most of them DEFINITELY weren't into their sororities or talking greek life as much as I was... :D
|
i've done a sumemr theater program since high school that i've recently grown too old for and last year there were 3 girls in the program who were also greek. i actually won an award at the end of the year for being so proud of my sorority and my chapter. apparently that was weird, i don't know.
|
I've said that about myself a few times!
I just won two awards at our formal last weekend, the "Absolute Sig Delt Award" and the "Presidential Award", which I'm very proud of and helps support that statement. Also, as I get closer to graduating, all I keep saying is that I wish I could still go to college, but not take any classes and just do sorority stuff. :) Or, if I could get a job where all I do is sorority activities, I would be very, very happy! |
so true!
This thread is soo true! My parents don't really understand my whole greek life, so I don't really go into detail about it with them! The majority of the girls in My chapter, "bleed Pink and Green"! Have a major test that you havn't studied for the next day, or could go to a rush party, mixer, chapter meeting, etc that involves that. I'd definatley be where my girls are!!! It's crazy..you would think it would be the other way around! I find that the majority of the girls are the same way! We will stop by one of the fraternity houses on a Monday night, and see 5 of our girls! However, we still keep a 3.2 GPA overall, I guess that's something to be proud of ! :D
Bridget~ |
My father tells his friends I major in sorority... I actually find it quite insulting because I am the president of my sorority, a member of the golden key honor society, DOUBLE majoring, and mainting a 3.6 GPA. For all that, I think I deserve a little more credit then "majoring in sorority."
|
My major wasn't sorority...
When I was an undergraduate, my major was 'college radio station' - so I can relate to being totally obsessed with your organization!
This time around, I think I'm getting an M.A. in GreekChat with a concentration in Alpha Phi, and a sub-specialty in the Syracuse Triad. :D |

And marrying a Greek doesn't guarantee understanding. He helped colonize a chapter of a national GLO at our campus but he's still pretty clueless. |
Even though I'm alum (but very ACTIVE!) my husband says I'm the "Professional Sorority Girl".
I have to remind him I'm just an amateur because I don't get paid. ;) |

I major in sororities as well.
|
Y'all don't feel bad at all.
As a fraternity man who's graduating in May, i'm going to seriously miss my times with my bros. That being said, the perfect girl for me would be one who loves her sorority as much as i love Sigma Nu. I mean, somewhere down the road, i want to share my life (and hopefully house) with a girl who's as passionate about her GLO as i am about mine. the cutest thing i can picture is the den in my future house, with my fraternity paddles hanging side by side my wives sorority paddles. So, don't fear majoring in Sorority. There are some guys out there like me who find this as attractive as anything else. I mean, i gave everything i had to Sigma Nu, and i want to be with someone who had the same devotion to their sorority...oh, lets say it's AGD ;) Kitso KS 361 Sigma Nu and AGD paddles hanging in my den someday ;) |
I don't see what the big deal is - most people find something that they "major" in in college; I think it's the sign of a well-rounded student if you become involved in something besides academics. For some people it's the radio station, campus TV, a capella, student government, whatever. For many of us, it's Greek Life..no different.
Luckily my parents are very understanding - my mom was in a local sorority in college and was pretty involved, she just wanted me to take it easy after I was done with president to concentrate on school and getting a job, which is what I'm doing anyways. |
Mine's a weird situation.
I became an alumna over a year ago even though I was still an undergrad and was going to be an undergrad for a while. Why? Because I found out that I couldn't handle going to school full time, working two jobs, and maintain good standing in my chapter. My grades slipped just a bit and I really wanted to focus more on academics. Finances weren't helping either. It was the hardest decision I had to make. I took a semester off to get my act together and then what do I do? They needed an alumnae editor to do the alumnae newsletter. I gladly volunteered to do it. Then the collegiate chapter needed a Campus Relations Advisor to serve on Executive Council. A few strings were pulled to make me an advisor since the "rule" states that an advisor needs to be out of school for a certain number of years. I volunteered to do that too. For some reason, I can't seem to get away. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have AGD in my life. My mom doesn't understand it, and neither do my non-Greek friends. Just like Ali, I think Imma gonna hafta marry me a Greek man!!! |
This is to funny!!!!!!!!:)
At the ripe age of (? ), I am still envolved. How much?: Member of House Corp., member of Mentoring Group, Started the Local Alum. Group, stated the New House Building Project, and last but not least the keeper of E_M Addresses. Did I major in Fraternity, of course, I founded the thing, (local) that is. At previous school, I was not in Greek Org. but played BaseBall, and Tennis. Hell grades suffered much worse. Why, because no one on the school staff cared about anything but how weel you did in sports. Fraternity made me study, gave me more insight on how to deal with people of all ages, Falculty members, and members of other Greek Orgs. I got an A+ in Greek Life and it helped me more than evrything thing else during College! When I Graduated, it showed how much I had learned doing what I did with Fraternity! Thank Goodness! |
OTW, I PMd you!
I don't know that I qualify as majoring in sorority, but my mom sure thinks I do! (After 3 years, she's still against the whole thing...but whatever.) |
I, without a doubt, am majoring in sorority. I kind of can't figure out how you wouldn't. I mean, you live there (for those with Houses) and almost every aspect of everything you do envolves some part of your org. My mom still doesn't understand the whole Greek thing, and she still calls it "E K" rather that Sigma Kappa. To me, it's a part of who I am, and I don't understand why some people aren't as enthusiastic about being Greek as we are.
In my house, we have a name for people like me: Super Sigma's. They are the ones who are all about the house, and getting envolved and making sure other people are getting involved. We live and breathe Sigma Kappa. I probably know more about my Org and greek life in general than anyone else I live with, and most people I meet on my campus because I just love it that much. ;) When I was an Alumnae, I helped re-colonize a defunct alum chapter, and did as much as I could to help my chapter. I know that when I when I become an Alum again, I'll do even more because I have a better understanding of how things work and how I can help. And I hope that I can find a guy who, at the very least is Greek, just so he understands my obsession. |
i think i completely major in sorority....i mean, i may not have gone to every single meeting, but i have served in several offices, lived in both of our houses, and i have absolutely no idea what else i would doing at my school if it wasn't for alpha gam (hmmm...maybe graduating on time?? who knows? ;) ). i feel like it is the one huge college experience that has totally changed me for the better...and it's weird, too, b/c i can't imagine a time when i didn't know these ladies.
i will graduate eventually with a big girl degree---and probably move to TX soon after ;)....but for right now, i'm content with majoring in sorority...or i was (I'M THISCLOSE TO ALUM STATUS!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( ) |

Thats ME!!!! :p |
ROTFL!!
My daddy used to tell people that I had a double major: Fraternity and Sorority! Deep down, he was terribly proud, though - he would wear his ADPi Dad t-shirt as he helped us out around the suite! :) I miss him so much. Btw, I did double major - in English & psychology. honeychile |
Princess Heather - I hope all your sisters realize how lucky they are to have you around! You sound like a gem! :)
My dad and mom never gave me any grief about my "sororitygirlitis". They were and are really cool about living their lives and letting me live mine so they pretty much always kept out of my business. I always invited them to the Mother/Daughter Teas and Father/Daughter Brunches, though and they enjoyed going to those. My dad even used to sit with us at some of the football games until I put a stop to it because some of my sisters tried to hit on him. I mean, I know he's a nice looking man but he's my DAD for Heaven's sake! Sick! |
I tried to major in fraternity, but, due to grades (a problem I couldn't quite get completely corrected that started BEFORE I joined), I was suspended.
When I came back to school, the chapter was closed. So, I guess have have postgraduate degrees in fraternity, still serving (and, yes, learning) about fraternity to this very day.... |
I too "majored" in sorority...that is at the 2nd school i went to. I loved it so much and I know for certain my last year there I never missed a meeting or event!
Now that I'm alum, whenever I mention the sorority my dad goes "are you still doing that?" Like he thinks i may one day stop! C'mon now, never!!!!I'm stuck on Phi Sig and I know my dad likes it too ;) I just need to get him a Phi Sig dad shirt.... |
I LOVE Greek life. NPHC, IFC, NPC, whatever- I love greek life. I'm the only one in my chapter though like that. None of them go on greek chat or like going to all the greek events and such. It's all good though.
|
When in college my parents thought the same and now that I have been an alumna for 3 years and am still as active as I was in school they think I'm mad! But aside from the weekly meetings I do KD stuff all week, it also helps that I am a House Corp member trying to build a house and an alum association pres!
But I think it is great to be so happy about yout affiliation and taking it seriously shows how important it is to you! |
I was on executive council the semester after I pledged....
I knew every answer during my pledgeship and I only missed 1 question on my test... Ask AlphaGamDiva, I was infamous for knowing AGD stuff, along with other fraternities and sororities.... I got an award for it one year- Most Sorority Spirit I went to every event EVER!!! until my senior year... I lived in the houses from the semester after I pledged until my last semester in college.... I lived in my letters.... Yet I still made time to graduate with honors, see my family and friends from home, have a boyfriend (who always put down my sorority... bbbrrggg SaNDERS!) and to this day I have letters proudly on my car. |
Hell, the Trophy/Award that means most to me is:
Outstanding Alum of the Decade! Still holds a place of Honor in My House!!! |
My dad was in a local fraternity on his campus that went national (Phi Sigma Kappa) and he keeps up with their national newsletter. So he understands about my excitement of being a new member in a sorority.
Okay, so I do spend a lot of time on GC, our national site and instant messaging sisters, & surfing the net in general (about 7-15 hrs/wk) and from what I have read so far I am still in the “norm”.;) I love what Greek life has to offer (service and friendships for life).:D |
When I told my mom that I was joining a sorority, she was ready to disown me... In college (the same one I go to) she hated sororities, they always made fun of them and even made their own anti-sorority with greek letters spelling something obsene (she didn't remember what it spelled). She never even went to a fraternity party her entire college career... My Grandpa, mom's dad, was totally excited for me because he was tired of being the only person in our immediate family that was "Greek." He was a Sigma Nu and to this day wants me to marry one, not likely because my school doesn't have a Sigma Nu chapter... and because I don't want to marry someone just because they are in a fraternity, but that is a whole other soap box that I won't get on!!!!

it's weird to hear all of this
because as long as i have been on this earth it's been established that i would be Greek my entire family is Greek when we got to family reunions, everyone is sporting their letters somehow the babies in our family have those 'A XYZ loves me!' bibs and t-shirts in fact, the biggest fight that our family has is when someone goes against the grain and joins a sorority not made popular by the family we have a list going we have 10 NPC groups we have 6 IFC groups we have 2 NPHC groups and GOD forbid that you join a sorority that isn't NPC, IFC, or NPHC. . .it's just not done |

Ok - your family and my family need to get together to see who has more people in the greek system. I can't think of all of the fraternities and sororities those from my step-mom's side of the family are in, but I can tell you that my father and older brother are both Sigma Nu's (dad went to Mount Union and bro went to TCU) and my mother and I are both ZTA's (both from Stetson as well). My little brother goes to military school (VMI) and they did away with fraternities a long time ago, but wouldn't you know Sigma Nu was founded at VMI ;) . I have 2 more step brothers, but they're not in college yet but I'm sure they'll join a fraternity. My step mom's side of the family consits of 6 children (including her) and they were all in a greek org. as are their spouses. I guess you could say that my family bleeds greek life. :) On a side note, my chapter's General Advisor is a 13th generation ZTA! |

I'm the first "Greek" girl in my family.. I hope this starts a good tradition!! My younger sister in high school is thinking about rushing when she goes to college, and I really hope she does! |
yes, ilovemyglo was a plethora of knowledge for us all (however, i got a 100% on my new member test, thanks!) ;)
i think it's sad when ppl (especially relatives) talk bad about greek life....my parents are uber cool with it (mom is great about her "agd mom" key chain), but my grandfather says all it's promoting is drinking and sex. uh.....no, but thanks for playin'.....just frustrating to hear that. some people are really and truly missin out of either the greek system in their life, or in the life of someone close to them. my mom lives through me and my sister's sorority stories since she never joined one in college. she totally wishes she had now.......makes for nicer stuff at christmas and b-days, though ;) but, my sister and i have hopefully started a wonderful greek tradition for our family.....many aopi and agd legacies to come!!! |

That is amazing!!! I am also the first "Greek" GIRL in my family, but the second person to join a GLO. My dad is a DU. I hope to have a daughter that will become a Pi Phi :), but if not, I hope my children choose to go Greek. I never saw myself joining a sorority, but now I wonder how I ever lived with out them |
