What's the deal with John Mayer anyway?
I keep hearing people on here talking about John Mayer. Am I living in a bubble? I've never heard his music, and yes, I do listen to the radio. So what kind of music does he do, and what is so great about him?

[flame retardant]
Sorry, but I think he sucks. His enunciation is awful and it really makes my ears hurt. YOUR BAAHHHHH-DE IS A WAAAHHHHHNDRLAND. And...not that cute. [/flame retardant] |
I'm just annoyed because (at the risk of sounding like a valley girl) he's SO 2 years ago, lol. He's one of those guys who everyone loved to pass around on Napster in the dorms my freshman year. A few songs are catchy. He is awesome in concert.
I think he writes pretty decent songs but it makes me sick the way people turn him into this musical icon. His treatment at the Grammy's this year= Alicia Keys the year before. Yet we haven't heard much from her lately...... I know there are a TON of John Mayer fans on the board and don't get me wrong, I can see why people like him. I am more irritated with people acting like they 'discovered' him (you KNOW people that do that, i guarantee it) and us treating him like a god. |

AngelPhiSig LOVES John Mayer, but shhhhh! Don't tell her I told you. :D
I will admit, I do have a picture of him up as my desktop on my home computer, but I'm over him. It was one of those "2 minute" things and never changed my desktop. |
i think his music is sexy
but that's because he's like the GEN X's Dave Matthews everyone knows that when 'under the table and dreaming' came out everyone in my high school because huge DMB bfans well, this GEN X needs a DMB and it just happens to be John Mayer fine example: our GEN X needed a New Kids On The Block thus, NSYNC and BSB were invented |
not to be a big pickypants but the youngest "Gen Xers" (if you go by the book that started it all to begin with) are 30 or 29 at most.
John Mayer - I first heard him on the independent station here. I like him fine, I think got popular cause he's an antidote to the boy bands (like Norah Jones is an antidote to Britney Smears). |
I think he's a genius, as far as his guitar techniques and his innovative songs.
Two best hit songs: Your Body is a Wonderland and No Such Things. |
:o book schmook
then, i guess we're GEN Y it doesn't matter it's not what the thread was about people get what i'm talking about |
Yeah, the Gen Xers Dave Matthews is Dave Matthews ...
Well, if John is anything like DMB, then I won't bother. |
his acoustic stuff is a lot better than his studio mumbo-jumbo. the dude CAN play. however, i have said this before in another thread... he would be a lot better if he played with a bag over his head. the facial expressions freak me out. but i DLed some of his live stuff recently and enjoyed it so I am gonna see him in concert this summer.
But no sorry... I am a dmb fan for life and there is no comparisson. and jack johnson is a little better than john imo. |

I agree. Bono is waaaaaay better:D |
John Mayer is good, but hes pretty overplayed now...I loved your body is a wonderland like 2 years ago..now i changed the station if it comes on the radio..I'm kinda over it...besides, Howie Day and Jason Mraz are A LOT better
and i'm going to see Howie tonight weeeee!! :) |
I wouldn't say he's like Dave Matthews . . . their voices sound similar and they both play acoustic guitar so there were a lot of comparisons drawn, but I think anyone who compares the two is missing a lot of the more subtle details.
I wouldn't say Jason Mraz or Howie Day is necessarily any better -- I think John Mayer has equal amounts or more talent -- but since they're less overplayed they still sound newer, more fresh sounding and therefore less boring. I do like John Mayer but I do think that the more the radio plays his stuff, the more boring it all sounds. And yes, those kids who just "discovered" him this summer and think they're really cool for doing so are pretty obnoxious . . . but that happens with every artist. |
I liked him because he was a "music major drop-out done good". I think he went to the Boston Conservatory or somewhere notorious like that. Some of his songs (lyrics) are sorta poignant for the 20-25 groups, but they all start to sound alike after all. The "No Such Thing" song that was huge last year isn't my favorite. My favorite is 1983. Other than that...ehhh. But he's hardly a Dave Matthews. And yeah I dig Jason Mraz too.

I admit, I always thought he was kinda cute, but I wasn't crazy about his music at all. However, now his music is growing on me too.

*makes pouty face*
But I just discovered him this summer and I think he's really cool... I'm just not into popular music at all and thought he was great and fell in love with his music. Admittedly, I do not visualize myself as this visionary underground music type of person for doing so. I KNOW it took me forever! (I also rarely listen to the radio at all.) The English major in me goes crazy over his lyrics. They're wonderful. I really don't think he sounds THAT much like DMB. I frankly don't like them that much. I also don't think his enunciation problems are nearly as bad as Dave's. He does seem to have breath control issues, if you listen to his live album. I think it's on 3x5 where he sounds like he's gasping for air. I really, really want to see him in concert. |
well Sherbert I mentioned the 'I'm so cool I listen to John Mayer' thing first......
and if you first heard about him this summer, that's fine. I just cannot stand the people who are like "He's SO amazing have you heard this song??? I've loved John Mayer forever....since last summer." and you're like he's had a career for like 3 years playing at House of Blues and stuff....you sound like you don't do that and its totally cool..I put it this way. I lived with a really dorky girl last summer. When she got the cd, I knew he was played out. Maybe its just being petty (it probably is, but I think that's fine) but it's the same thing as you introducing a restaraunt to someone and them taking their entire LIFE over there without inviting you and making it their hangout...I dunno its hard to explain. |
Generation X

And by the way, Generation X, by Douglas Coupland, was published in 1991. |
I love John, and have loved him for the last two years before he got all famous. He is fantastic live and I agree his acoustic work is definatley worth listening to.
I also love his cover songs, try "Walk on the Ocean" Jack Johnson, my word....what can I say? He is wonderful..... So are Jason Mzar and Howie Day....they can rock my world anyday:) |

I adore John Mayer. And there are several of his songs that just have kick ass lyrics.

I would say anyone born in the 1980s is a Gen Yer. But then, even the "experts" use different years - I saw a magazine that used one range to describe Gen X in one article and a different range of years in another article in the same issue!
I say (and this is not scientific in any way) - you're Gen X if you: -Can remember any part of the 1970s -Saw Heathers, Singles, and Pulp Fiction in the theater during their original releases -Were old enough to wear grunge when it was in -Were old enough to have big hair when it was in -You owned records as a child -Your dad faced the issue of serving in Vietnam You're Gen Y if you: -Have been using the Internet (and not a BBS) since junior high -Have ever been a believer in "girl power!" -Are in college now (not a returning student) -Were into N'Sync and Backstreet Boys instead of NKOTB -Can't remember when Fox was a cable channel |

i think howie day is singing, but i could be wrong |
John Mayer is nothing but a cheap Dave Matthews rip off. I liked "your body is a wonderland" better the first time I heard it, when it was "Crash into Me" by the Dave Matthews Band. If his cover of "Walk on the Ocean" is of the Toad the Wet Sprocket song he has just totally ruined another good song. I think Dave is a truelly talented genius and John Mayer is just riding on his coat tales to success. Just like so many other bands out there. Like Creed is to Pearl Jam, or Rap-Metal is to Rage Agaisnt the Machine, etc, etc... The list could go one for hours.

I've heard (I think it was in a Time magazine article around 1995, when the "Gen X" thing first came out) that you are GenX if you were born between the years of 1971-1977 (you would have been 18-24 in 1995). Gen Y is the group born between 78 and 83/84. There's some other name for the kids born 85 and after but I can't remember them. Judging by the kids my lil sis (born in 85) goes to school with, " gen motherf***ing selfish horny bastards" seems to fit.

Yay! I am going to see John Mayer in concert this summer!
My sister bought the tickets as a graduation gift...Woo Hoo!!! http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmili...ty/yelclap.gif |
I have tickets to see him and the Counting Crows this summer.....pretty excited about the Counting Crows, dunno about the Mayer that is John though. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
|
Well... In my psychology book, it says that anyone who graduated from high school in 2000 or later is officially considered a "Millenial"... but that hasn't really caught on? haha
I like John Mayer and have been listening to him since before YBIAW became popular- but I am not totally into him. And personally, I think he's kinda cute :) |

And I'm pumped because i'm seeing him TWICE in concert this summer... in chicago (4th row CENTER seats :D:D:D:D) and at Milwaukee's Summerfest! It's going to be great! By the way - he is FABULOUS in concert for all those who haven't seen him!! He really interacts with the audience and gives you what you want! He's great! |

I like John Mayer, and Howie Day, and Dave Matthews. See, here's the thing, I liked them all before they were super popular so I still like them... I know it's annoying when people think they discovered someone, or when people only like someone because they are of the moment... but it's also OBNOXIOUS when people decide to quit listening to/liking a musician just because they are popular and they are trying to be all hipper-than-thou nonconformists. Talent is talent... beauty is beauty and I appreciate beauty. And if it is exceptional enough that the rest of the country takes notice, so be it.

Lucky! I wanna see him in concert so badly it makes me sick, but as far as I know there aren't nearby tour dates coming up. One of my good friends, named Rob, has seen him in concert several times. I actually have a funny story about him. First of all, all of his friend tease him about his overlarge ego, so I think it makes this story funnier. He went to see the several concerts in quick succession and was lucky enough to speak to John at each of them. By the third or fourth one, he says to John "I bet you're sick of seeing me, aren't you?" John gets a puzzled look on his face and says "I don't know you for shit!" |
sherbertlemons, that doesn't surprise me at all about what John said to your friend. I konw someone who opened for him awhile back and he said he was super-cocky.
