Reality show to be filmed at an HBCU
April 14, 2003
Southern University To Be Home Of New Reality Series Southern University is famous for many things and it's about to gain even more national attention. The historical black university has been selected as the site for a new reality television show. Out of more than 500 applicants, only 50 students were selected to try out for the show. The show's creator is Tracey Edmonds, who produced the hit movie "Soul Food". Edmonds says she was happy when Southern agreed to participate. "The diversity of the students here and the beautiful campus, the amenities and the activities make it a perfect college to profile," said Edmonds. Once they're chosen, the cameras will follow students for three weeks and look at everything from their academic lives to their social lives. Edmonds says they have not come up with a name for the show but it will air on Black Entertainment Television (BET). Seven or eight students will be selected by Tuesday. Tracey Edmonds is the wife of Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds who produces several top musical performers. http://www.wafb.com/Global/story.asp?S=1232769 |

OMG
If you knew Southern like some of us know Southern......
This is going to be REALLY interesting to see.....:o |
This is most definitely going to be interesting to say the least. Tracy and Babyface seem to be pretty responsible producers so hopefully they selected a diverse group of students to film so that viewers can get an accurate depiction of life at a Black college.

1. No comment :p 2. It is... 3. I hope that it isn't degrading or demeaning. Let's remember, it's going to be on BET. My LS wondered why they would participate in this when "they" (supposedly) turned down Drumline. |

I think its the indivduals who are being followed decision unlike the Drumline decision which was totally up to Dr. Greggs (the Band Director). |

Okayyyy!!! SU and a reality serires...... yeah I wonder how real? They should start off in finacial aid: "thats when people stop being polite and get real", followed by the "computer is down, then the caf, then the union and the dorms, don't get me started on SU! I love it though wouldn't trade it for the world!:p |

well......
After asking around ,the overall opinion is that it seems to be tasteful SO FAR
They filmed a few decent things like the SGA and Mrs. Southern debates. I'm waiting to see the outcome. The guy who won SGA president isn't AA, but from what I hear the other candidate transferred from LSU only last year so he had a questionable handle on the student body's issues. There is a huge debate about the person representing an HBCU being non-AA. |
SGA was always interesting. You could make a show off of that alone, especially back in the days of Keenon Wilborn and the Crump vs. Simien debate. Oddly enough, Crump(David Banner to rap fans)has another record out that is getting major airplay out here. My wife was shocked to find out that he was our SGA President once upon a time.

Katina was president of the Pre-Law Club when I was in it and was my best female friend's roommate during her campaign. It was a trip back then for sure.
|
just because it's being shown on b.e.t., i'm skeptical about the content and quality of the show in general. just because it's being shown on b.e.t., i'm not watching it. i'm sticking to my b.e.t. boycott.
|
Katina is currently our cluster coordinator.
Back to the topic, whatever is taped and what is shown COULD BE 2 different things. I'm with you stillwater15. That's why MJ is trying to do damage control with his interview. What was taped and what was view/aired were two different things. |
This ought to be interesting Southern just elected a white SGA president.

Wellllllll allllllllrighty then...
Let's hear it for diversity.....
;) :D  :p :D |

reality show on bet
over in the "new trends on 04" thread, we want to see reality tv gone! but why is BET tryin to get in on it? only saw a commercial for it, but its called "college hill" and follows i think 8 college kids around on an HBCU...
from what i saw, it seems itll have the stereotypical characters of a reality show--rich girl, frat boy (who i think will be an AphiA), quiet freshman, overgrown senior, the overacheiver student, the rebel, blah, blah, blah...get over it! i will report back on this. some1 holla if they know what im talkin about. p.s. tell me why i didnt know about the b2k breakup until this morning! and i work with jhs kids! i saw them on 106 and park, but probably want paying attention. |
The show was filmed at Southern University by Tracey Edmonds ( wife of Babyface). It was filmed at the beginning of last year.
|
yeah, thats all ive been able to find out about it.

Well it's set at a college so it probably won't be toooo bad, but I can't say I have a good feeling about this!
|
I know that last Spring’s Greek show and DST probate was filmed. If I'm not mistaking the entire Spring Fest weekend was filmed. Everywhere you went on campus there were flyers up warning of taping taking place.
Echoing Wonderful1098... SSSSSU!!!! ;) |

I believe it starts on the 28th or 29th of January. I'm a little nervous about the show, but I will be watching it. |
I will not lie - I'll watch it because I watch a bi of reality TV. I'm also curious to see what a black reality show will be like ESPECIALLY at a college which has all sorts going on - greek life, partying, school stress, people growing up, cliques, etc.

A Delta Probate was filmed to be aired on BET? Excuse my confusion everyone, but what would posses them to let that happen? A probate/coming out show IS a form of celebration and in many cases just a harmless act of showcasing new members. Not sure of the context of what took place, but does anyone else get a bit nervous on the airing of the episode? Holla Back. 4-ZL-F99 |
