Flip Flop?
Hi everyone-
Can anyone out there write down the hand movements to flip flop? I am trying to teach it to my chapter (Epsilon) during our recruitment school but I've only seen it a few times and can't remember how it goes. Thanks! :) |
To start, you put your right hand on top of the other person's left, and you left under the other person's right. The easiest way to remember the motions to flip flop is to remember that everything is in threes....you rock your arms side to side three times (right, left, right) and you slap (hit the other people's hands) three times before you flip. The only other directions are to clap, which is obvious as to what you have to do, and flip which just means that you go from having your right hand on top to the bottom and your left hand from the bottom on the top, or vice versa. So here goes...
"We" right, "are" left, "the" right "Gam" slap, "ma" clap, "Phi" slap, "Bet" clap, "as" slap "we'd" flip, "like" clap, "to" slap, "tell" clap, "you" slap "we" flip, "are" clap, "so" slap, "glad" clap, "you're" slap, "here" flip "we're" right, "sis" left, "ters" right "ev" slap, "v" clap, "er" slap, "true" clap, "flip" slap, "flop" flip "sis" right, "ters" left, "for" right "me" slap, "and" clap, "for" slap, "you" clap, "flip" slap, "flop" flip "we're" right, "glad" left, "we've" right "ha" slap, "ad" clap, "this" slap, "chance" clap, "flip" slap, "flop" flip "to" right, "wel" left, "come" right, "you" left "Gam" slap, "ma" clap, "Phi" slap, "Bet" clap, "a" slap "Gam" slap, "ma" clap, "Phi" slap, "Bet" clap, "a" slap "Gam" slap, "ma" clap, "Phi" slap, "Bet" clap, "a" slap "girls" flip, "whoo" high five both sides If that was confusing, as I'm sure it probably was, just send me a message and I'll try to think of a less confusing way to explain it. Good Luck!!! Love in II K E, Rebekah |
Gamma Phi cheers
I've looked through this forum to see if I could find something what i want on GC all ready, but maybe I didn't look hard enough (or maybe it wasn't there...). We just finished Sports Week (all the sororities compete in football, softball and volleyball... we did OK, i guess, probably will get 3rd) and some sisters and I were trying to remember some of the cheers we did my freshman year. A few of us who went to convention this past summer were trying to remember the cheers we saw, as well as cheers we've seen at Founder's Days, RLCs and PLCs.
Specifically, we want to remember the rest of this one that we saw, and I don't remember what chapter it's from (I think it's SoCal though): "We're cool, we go to school, we make all the boys drool, we're Gamma Phis" and I can't remember the rest, but it's really cute. Anyone have any good cheers we can teach our newer girls for future events like this (ie. Anchor Splash and Greek man are coming up... have to outcheer the other chapters... you all know how it goes)??? In TTKE, Carol |
Here are some of our cheers we use at greek week, derby days, anchor splash, etc:
1) Go, go, go Gamma Gamma Go, go, go Phi Phi Go, go, go Beta Beta Gamma Phi Beta 2) (clapping) G with an A with an M M with an A with a P P with an H, H with an I Gamma, Gamma, Gamma Phi (clapping) G with an A with an M (woo!) M with an A with a P (woo!) P with an H, H with an I Gamma, Gamma, Gamma Phi (clapping) G Phi, G Phi B Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta G Phi, G Phi B Gamma Phi Beta girls (Clapping) G Phi, G Phi B Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta G Phi, G Phi B Gamma Phi Beta girls (Clapping) G-A-M-M-A Gamma Phi Beta hey! Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi Gamma Phi Beta (clapping) G-A-M-M-A Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi Gamma Phi Beta Hope these help :-) |
those cheers sound good, what kind of "tune" do you sing/cheer them too??
our chapter really needs cheers and/or songs desperately!! we've never been a singing chapter and we're hoping to change that. (ie. we've never sang during formal rush, etc.) if you can think of anymore.....? Gamma love!:D |
This is something we do at the end of kick song, it's got a leader and everybody else follows, we'll also sometimes do it during Greek Week:
When I say Gamma, you say Phi! (Gamma - Phi, Gamma - Phi) When I say number, you say 1! (number - 1, number 1) When I say crescent, you say moon! (crescent - moon, crescent - moon) Alright (alright) We're out of sight! (out of sight) We're dynamite (we're dynamite) Go Gamma Phi! (Go Gamma Phi!) During recruitment we sing flip-flop, I Love the Crescent Moon (we have huge motions to this, which we learned at RLC was not normal), Love Labor..., and a few others. Do any of your chapters have a specific candlepass song? We lost that tradition for a while and just got it back, we sing a song called "I See the Moon" and I am wondering what other chapters do? |
We sing "I See the Moon" (we call it the "Moon Song" though), but for candlepasses we sing "Pass It On"
Let's see, some chants/cheers that we have... I am a G I am a G A I am a G A M M A Phi Beta girl and I have G A M M A Phi in my H E A R T and I will L O V E love it til the D A Y I die I love the crescent moon shining in the sky I love the pink carnation til the day I die True to our motto "founded on a rock" Gamma Phi Beta, Gamma Phi Beta, Gamma Phi Beta, Gamma Phi Beta Thats all I can think of off the top of my head that we've used for chant competitions, or at least that haven't already been mentioned. |
We use all those cheers, and those songs too (Never heard the Moon Song though). For candle passings, we use the "Love, Love, Love, Love" song (chant is more like it though)- the same one used for pinning of new members. Speaking of, we just had a candle passing and one of my little's is engaged!!! YAY!
Some of our other cheers we use are more like high school cheers, but they're fun: Give me a big Gamma (shouting) GAMMA (shouting) Give me a little Gamma (quietly) gamma (quietly) Don't give me no words, no words. Don't give me no phrase, no phrase. Just give me that girl, that Gamma Phi girl. (this is all shouting and really fast, while clapping) Give me a big Phi (shouting) PHI (shouting) Give me a little Phi (quietly) phi (quietly) Don't give me no words, no words. Don't give me no phrase, no phrase. Just give me that girl, that Gamma Phi girl. (this is all shouting and really fast, while clapping) Give me a big Beta (shouting) BETA (shouting) Give me a little Beta (quietly) BETA (quietly) Don't give me no words, no words. Don't give me no phrase, no phrase. Just give me that girl, that Gamma Phi girl. (this is all shouting and really fast, while clapping) That's my favorite cheer, but a lot of our girls think it's too fast. Any others??? |
The Call
Actually AAgammagirl, we did sing during formal rush up until my pledge class which was back in '96. We sang, sucked, were humiliated, and GAVE UP for good!
I can't remember what song it was, but we'd sing something at the end when we were giving out carnations to all of the rushees on bid night. It was acutally a really nice song. I think it was called Remember maybe? I think it started...Remember, Gamma Phi Beta, Remeber when you're away....blah blah blah blah blah blah, we hope you come back some day... If anyone knows what I'm talking about feel free to fill me in. As for cheers, our chapter is known for the Call. We like to block intersections where ever we can, get into a long line, do the can can and sing the following: We love the brown and mode The crescent in the sky The pink carnation will be with us 'till we die We're sisters ever true Friendship for me and you A love that will not falter as the years go by And so we sing our song In praise of Gamma Phi And if you want to join us hold your head up high Cause we are proud to be In a sorority It's Gamma Phi for you and me for you and me!!!! And then, as we go back into whatever house we were running out of, usually out of breath, we do the following cheer: G with an A with an M M with an A with P P with an H H with an I Gamma Gamma Gamma Phi!!! |

Remember, Gamma Phi Beta, Remember, when you're away Remember, the friends you've made here And don't forget to come back someday. Remember, the pink carnation, the crescent in the sky, And keep truly ever with you, The mem'ries of Gamma Phi... She'll remember you... and then for linger: Mhmm I want to linger, Mhmm a little longer, Mmm a little longer here with you (WOOHOO) Mhmm this is a perfect night Mhmm it doesn't seem quite right Mhmm that this should be our last goodbye (WOOHOO) Mhmm and come September Mmmmm and I'll remember, Mmmm our sisterhood and friendship true. (WOOHOO) Mmm and as the years go by Mhmm I'll think of you and sigh Mhmm it's not goodbye it's just goodnight (WOOHOO) And then we also usually do our "When I say Gamma, you say Phi" cheer. We sing a lot more than I thought we did, but half of my PC (led by me) is tone deaf. |

[B]and then for linger[QUOTE] So, as all of you (I hope) know, I am a Gamma Phi Beta alumna initiate. The song you just posted, Kathleen, is the end of one of my college songs, which is just way too funny. It's a senior song and always concludes our serenades. Everyone cries ... :D Once upon a time, a girl with sunlight in her hair, Walked beneath a dome, and swore she'd never go, But that was once upon a time, very long ago. Once upon a time, little sisters said their first hello. For a year or two, we sang a happy song, But that was once upon a time, very long ago. Through the years, friendships we have shared, How we laughed and played as though tomorrow wasn't there. We were young and didn't have a care, Where did it go? Once upon a time, a girl much older than before, Stood beneath an oak, with teardrops in her eyes, But that was once upon a time, now it is goodbye. Oooh, we want to linger, Oooh, a little longer, Oooh, a little longer here with you. Oooh, this is the perfect night, Oooh, it doesn't seem quite right, Oooh, this is our very last with you. Oooh, and come September, Oooh, we'll all remember, Oooh, dear old JC and friendships true. Oooh, and as the years go by, Oooh, we'll all look back and sigh, Oooh, this is goodnight and not goodbye. Ooooh (sequenced through twice) This is good night and not goodbye. Then all the seniors say... Good Night, Sweet Dreams :) |

We don't do too many cheers. just... G with an A with a M M with an A with a P P with a H, H with an I Gamma Gamma Gamma Phi! and I am a G I am a G-A I am a G-A-M-M-A Phi Beta girl and I have G-A-M-M-A Phi in my H-E-A-R-T and I will L-O-V-E love it til the D-A-Y I die! As for candlepasses... I've only been through one, for a pinning. :D so cute! lol. We sang "Gamma Phi Girl" which goes something like this... Gamma Phi girl, I love you I love you most of all I love your sweet smile, I love your smart style I love you short or tall Brown eyes or blue eyes they sparkle and shine (can't remember the words here) I think you're divine Blonde hair or brunette, I'll never forget That Gamma Phi girl of mine. |
One that we do that I did not see goes like:
G-G---G-Ph-B Gam-ma Gamma-Phi-Beta G-G---G-Phi-B Gamma-Phi-Beta-Girls Boom Boom Boom Then you repeat We love this one! |
Someone mentioned a song called the "Moon Song." I don't think I know this one? What are the words?
|
I can't remember all the words because nobody ever gets pinned/lavaliered anymore at my campus, and the girls just announced they were engaged, but it's something like:
"I see the moon, the moon sees me, The moon sees the one that I want to see. God bless the moon, and God bless me, And God bless the one that I want to see. I do believe that God above Created you for me to love He picked you out of all the rest Because he knew I'd love you best. I once had a heart as good as new But now it's gone from me to you Take care of it as I have done For you have two and I have none." I know the first verse is how we do it, not sure on the rest...I relied on Google for that. |
Yay-- another song I actually know!
At Judson, we sang a variation of that song. I bet the Alpha Phis would love our version. Tell me why, the stars do shine. Tell me why, the ivy twines. Tell me why, the sky's so blue. Tell me, Dear Judson, just why we love you. Because God made the star to shine. Because God made the ivy twine. Because God made the sky so blue. God made Dear Judson, that's why we love you. I do believe that God above, Created you for me to love. He picked you out from all the rest. Because He knew, sis, that I loved you best. Now, you know this is an old Southern song, right? ;) |

Also, has anybody ever seen the old song books from the 30s/40s? My chapter has one (how, I don't know, since we were chartered in 1969) that has a song demanding a fraternity pin. It talks about not wanting candy, or diamonds, or flowers, but a fraternity pin. SigEp is the only chapter on our campus that still pins that we know of, and there's SIX actives dating SigEps right now and only one is pinned. I think they're going to start singing that song during serenades. ;) |
New Gamma Phi Song
HI!
The girl her at Beta Gamma came up with a new song! It is adorable, and goes along an army theme. When we're walking down the hall When we're walking down the hall We stand out above them all We stand out above them all We're sweet and cute and full of flare We're sweet and cute and full of flare All the guys they stop and stare All the guys they stop and stare We're Gamma Phi Beta and we're here to say: We're Gamma Phi Beta and we're here to say: Gamma Phi's the only way! Gamma Phi's the only way! The last line is more fun if you just scream instead of using teh tune of teh song! It can also be changed to Greek Life's the only way if necessary! |
Gamma Phi Songs!
HI! I am Kate, and a Gamma Phi at Bowling Green!
Here is one of the songs we do for Recruitment! It is army style, and meant to be repeated: When were walking down the hall! (When were walking down the hall!) We stand out above them all! (We stand out above them all!) We're sweet and cute and full of flare! (We're sweet and cute and full of flare!) All the guys they stop and stare! (All the guys they stop and stare!) We're Gamma Phi Beta, and we're here to say, (We're Gamma Phi Beta, and we're here to say,) Gamma Phi's the only way!> It is best if this line is just screamed! (Gamma Phi's the only way!) Good Luck Ladies! |
During rush, our chapter sang a song to us (rushees) and it had something in it about:
we have the legs of _______ we have the ____ of _____ ... we need our chests..... blah blah blah i'm sure I'm going to learn the song soon, but it is STUCK in my head---- and I don't like things to be stuck in my head if i don't know some of the words!! |
candle pass song
For candle passes we sing the following song in 2 rounds.
Love, love, love, love Moon is shining up above Follow your heart to the one that you love The one that your love If anyone has any other good chants for Recruitment, that would be great. Thanks!!:) Sarah Epsilon Sigma |
songs
We just had a recruitment workshop today!
We were going over our songs and most of them are the same. One that I remember the most is: Shes got one blue, two blue eyes that shine. Shes a Gamma Phi to the bone. When you see that girl walking down the street, You better leave that girl alone! Shes got eyes like jezabells teeth like pearls, Gosh oh gee shes a Gamma Phi Girl! Shes got one blue two blue eyes that shine. Shes a Gamma Phi to the bone. Gamma phi my baby, gamma phi. This is Gamma Phi, baby Gamma Phi! We do some actions to this song which go with it really well. Im not good at explaining them so if anyone has heard of this they can maybe help me out... We also do another thing, on our campus there is like a Fraternity row is what they call it beause all the houses are kinda by eachother, we live in pods, like a dorm setting... On Kearney Campus there's a place to go, Its called Gamma Phi Beta on Fraternity Row. They rock and they roll and their really alive. Gamma Phi Beta they really jive. Ohh boom boom ditty daddy we love you Boom boom ditty daddy we love you Boom boom ditty daddy we love you Oh Gamma Phi Beta, we love you. On Kearney Campus there's a place to go, Its called Gamma Phi Beta on Fraternity Row. They rock and they roll and their really alive. Gamma Phi Beta they really jive. Ohh boom boom ditty daddy why dont you Boom boom ditty daddy why dont you Boom boom ditty daddy why dont you Why dont you pledge Gamma Phi too..... It is a really fun song... It goes with Claps and the Gamma Phi Beta on Its called Gamma Phi Beta on Fraternity Row... we yell Gamma Phi Beta.. Its really cute so if you have never heard it it would be a good thing to try and rearange for your house... |
We do the boom boom diddy daddy one also. During rush we do a Grease skit and that is part of it we also have a lot of other songs for it and if anyone wants the words tell me and I would be more then glad to send them to you. But what our chapter is most know for is our cheer lean a lean. It goes.... 2 times 4 is half of 16 all for Gamma Phi do the lean a lean. A lean a lean a lean a lean a lean a lean (clap) a lean a lean a lean a lean a lean.
And when you are saying a lean a lean you lean on the person next to you and then switch sides when you clap. Sabrina |
Here at Alabama, home of the infamous "door songs," we sing the rushees in and out of the house during formal fall rush. We start out with the "G Phi, GPhiB, Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta" cheer, then go into the "G A MM A, Gamma Phi Beta, Hey!" cheer while stacked on top of each other in the door.
Then we sing one of our two welcome songs as we form a tunnel to let the rushees in: Gamma Phi Beta welcomes you here, come on and join our fun and our cheer We're on the U of A campus, sorority row, The Gamma Phis shout a welcome hello! Oh would you like to be another Gamma Phi, and wear our crescent and pearls on high, So come on along and we'll show you why, all over this land, number one's GAMMA PHI! _________________________________ We welcome you to Gamma Phi Beta, We're mighty glad you're here We'll send the air reverberating with a mighty cheer We'll sing you in, we'll sing you out, to you we raise a mighty shout, hail, hail, the gang's all here so welcome to Gamma Phi How do you do? Then, once the party is over, we lead the girls out and begin singing one of our goodbye songs: Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye to you from Gamma Phi When you're home and safe in bed, Gamma Phi dreams running through your head Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, Goodbye to you from Gamma Phi When you wake you'll know it's true Gamma Phi Beta is the one for you! ______________________________ Dream in you sleep, and smile in your dreams And may all your dreams be of Gamma Phi We are dreaming tonight neath the crescent's pure light, The crescent that's shining for Gamma Phi When home you have gone just remember this song, And you're always welcome again, Dream in your sleep and smile in your dreams, and may all your dreams be of Gamma Phi! then, finally, we stack in the door and do the two cheers again. It's quite exhausting. --Kristen Epsilon Lambda |
My sister taught me this one - she learned it at Vanderbilt (Alpha Theta) and when I first heard it during Rush at Northwestern - along with all of the other songs she taught me - I got goose bumps because I knew I was home:
You take the legs of Betty Grable You take the sex of ol' Mae West You take the grace/face of Elizabeth Taylor And off Raquel you take the chest We need the chest! And then you put them all together Far better than a Pi Beta Phi You'll never get more/better lovin' in the whole wide world Thank from a perfect Gamma Phi And incidentally I'm a gamma Phi I'm not a Theta And incidentally I'm a Gamma Phi There was a more gracious version for during Rush - pre-pledge night - but it escapes me now. We also had a candlepassing song that I haven't seen in the posts above, but I could remember it if I saw some of the words I think. This is gonna make me crazy, I fear... |
At Southern Cal in the mid 1970's (were any of y'all born then?!), we sang a similar version of your song Mary!
You take the legs of Brigitte Bardot You take the sex of ol' Mae West You take the face of Elke Sommer And from Sophia take the chest (We need the chest!) And then you put them all together It's neither Theta nor Pi Phi You get more lovin' in this whole wide world From a perfect Gamma Phi girl (We really Mean it!) And incidentally I'm a Gamma Phi too Bah doo bah doo! ;) |
Speaking of songs.....as I am a new sister, I haven't any clue how to sing any of the songs (except for the blessing but I don't know the words!).
Is there an opportunity to obtain a songbook and/or tape of music with the singing (maybe from IHQ) so that I don't take forever to learn everything? .....Kelly :) |
I beleive there is a tape of the songs but I'm not sure. Loraine Meech at IH might be able to help you (she seems to know everything). Her email is lmeech@gammaphibeta.org

That is so cute!!!!! That reminds me of when I was in the advanced drama class in high school. Every year we did a children's theatre play to perform for schoolchildren. We would make the plays into musicals by taking current pop songs, Disney songs, TV show themes, etc and changing the words to go along with the story line. Kudos to Epsilon Omicron for exercising a little creativity! :) .....Kelly :) |
Here's some others:

gamma phi beta cheer
We had a CLC visit last fall, and she taught us the following chant. It is a respond chant. 1 is the people leading the chant, and 2 is the respondants.
1. Hey Gammies 2. Yeah! 1. Hey Gammies 2. Yeah! 1. Introduce yourselves 2. Right on! (fist pump towards the sky) 1. Introduce yourselves 2. Right on (fist pump towards the sky) (everyone clapping) We are the gammies, yeah, and we are so proud, yeah That's why yell, yeah, so very loud, and say Hey, Hey, Hey!! (3 quick fist pumps) (repeat from beginning) Our chapter really enjoys this.....so I figured I'd leave it for others to see.... IIKE, Sarah Epsilon Sigma Morehead State University |
I thought I would add some of the cheers we do at Long Beach...
Our favorite cheer is called OOOOOHHHHHH!!!! (we get in a big huddle and throw our right fists in the air and yell OOOOHHHHHHHHH!!!!!, then when the cheer starts we hit our fist on the palm of our other hand in beat with the chant, and during certain words punch our fist back in the air) OOOOOOOHHHHHHHH....... Oh Gamma Phi Beta Oh Gamma Phi Beta Oh Gamma Phi Beta the BEST (punch) sorority And you can surely bet That we're so glad we met We like to thank you for such happy memories Come on and join along Come on and sing our song Come on and lift your voices And we'll be riding high Ask any guy you know And he will tell you so The only way to go is dear ol' Gamma Phi hey! (punch) G-A-M-M-A (spell out), Gamma Phi Beta hey! (punch) Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi, Gamma Phi Beta! (punch and cheer!!!!) Another cheer is RED HOT (Someone yells) Gamma Phis are what? (Everyone answers) Red hot! (Someone yells) Gamma Phis are what? (Everyone answers) Red hot! (All together) Gamma Phis are R. clap E. clap D. clap With a little bit of H. clap O. clap T. (clap, clap, clap) R.E.D. with an H.O.T. (spell out) Red hot, red hot, red hot!!! This cheer is called Red Hot Tomatoes We're the Gamma Phi Betas ugh, We're the red hot tomatoes (pronounced tomatas) ugh, We get all the boys and we treat 'em like toys We're the Gamma Phi Betas ugh!! (Just for fun, not to be serious) If any one has any questions on these write me back :) Love in IIKE, Misha |
Those are cute, Misha! Maybe I can make it up to Gamma Eta's recruitment and hear those chants in person!
