5 year college students and "start all overs" represent
Aren't you 4th year students happy that you have one more year of this madness? ;)
At my school this is a trend, 5 and even 6 year students are common. The average student takes 12 hrs per semester. I know someone who has been there since 1996 and is still an undergrad, she only take 3-9 hours per semester. There is also a population who have majored in one thing and then they got to their junior or senior year and decided that they wanted to change their major. |
I changed from psychology to international trade to corporate communication. Started Fall of '97, graduate May, 2003. So 5 1/2 years.
|
This week I will finish my 4th year of college. FREAKING SCARY! Thing is... I won't graduate till prolly my 6th year... and I DON'T wana graduate!
|
If I hadn't transferred schools, I probably would have graduated in the flat 4 years... but transferring and then changing my major as a second semester junior will put me back a little bit, but I'm kind of glad. This school is just starting to grow on me, and I don't really mind the extra time that will be spent here:)
|
Well I started college in the fall of 98, and will graduate May 2004 so about 5 1/2 years. I have transferred schools and changed majors twice, otherwise I probably would have finished by now.
|
My 3rd yr, probably gonna take me 5 as well. You basically cannot have a social life here if you wanna finish in 4 yrs
|
I changed my major the beginning of my 2cnd semester Junior year. And I still graduated within 4 years. The biggest reason was probably because I had completed ALL of my university required courses within my 1st 2 years. And because I knew I couldn't afford that 5th year! ;)
|
I'm the freak who finished in 3 years (because of college credits taken in high school and because my parents pushed me to finish in 3). It's kinda weird now, because this should be my graduating year... instead I've been out in the real world for almost a year now and at 21 I am the youngest person at the company I work for (although there are a lot of 22-25 year-olds here.)

I'm another member of the 5 year crew! I transferred from Duquesne to Bethany. Because hardly any credits transferred, I was at Bethany for 4 years, no sweat off my back!
At Bethany, most students graduate in 4 years. However, I dated a guy my freshman year, and he was a junior. When I graduated 4 years later, yep, he still had junior standing. And he took no time off. Don't ask me how! LOL |
Woohoo!!! I'm in 4th year right now and I have at least 1 more year to go. I took this semester off too.
I've also changed my major three times...ya, my parents weren't too impressed. But this is also seems to be a trend at my school. |
Does a 5-year bachelor's/master's degree program count?
Most people at my school seem to finish up in 4 or 4-1/2 years, unless they change majors late, double major, or go for the 5-year program. Grad school is another story. I know a guy who took 10 years to finish his doctorate... that's not counting the time it took him to earn his master's. |
The education program at EMU is usually a five year program.
I started in Fall '98 and will be graduating at the end of the month. |
I transfered schools after my first year and then changed majors from Animal Science to Radio & Television half way through. Five years right there, and now I'm going back to get my elementary education certificate. Here comes another two years.
|
Screw the five years. I loved UH-Manoa so much that I decided to stay longer.
Like ktsnake I started in the Fall of 97 and will finally be graduating on May 18th. :D It's about f'n time, that's all I have to say. |
If everything goes as planned, I will graduate May 10, which will be four years for me. Unfortunately, I didn't decide until my junior year that I wanted to be a teacher. As a result of that, after I finish here I will still have a few more courses to take undergrad and then begin the MAT (Master's of Arts in Teaching), which will take another 1 1/2 - 2 years to totally finish and be out there. I am only 21, and I honestly don't think I'm ready to go out there and work full-time and have a slew of responsibilities.
|
I came in w/ 23 hours credit and would have graduated next month if I had stayed w/ my original major. Now I'm in a 4.5 year program w/ 1.5 years to go. I don't understand why people push to grad in 4 or less when they didn't come in w/ credit. Now is our last chance to be young and irresponsible and we should all appreciate it while we can!!!!

I am glad that I am not the only one in this position.
I started college in the fall of 1999. I went to Tenn Tech University for a year and a half majoring in music education. The spring of my sophomore year I transfered to Middle Tenn State University and majored in music business. Then in the fall of my junior year I went back home and went to community college. That spring I transfered to Morehead State where I am still at majoring in elementary ed. It is my 4th year this year and I don't think I will graduate for another year...hopefully. I don't think I will ever graduate. Anne Marie |
6 years of school, but i guess i can't say shit because i'll getting my masters this may. does that count?
|
Technically, I should graduate next spring. But, I pretty much took a semester off last fall for the WDW College Program. I've also finally found a major I like, and they don't have it at my school, so I'm transferring! Transferring as a senior...yeah, I'll never get out. But that's okay!

With one major change, it took me 6 years.
No regrets, though. :D |
Yah for the five year plan!!!! You can add me to the list, which I don't mind either. I started school thinking I would be a Biology major then towards the end of my sophomore year I decided this was not what I wanted to go into, so I switched to teaching (which I love) But most of my pre-reqs I took for Biology didn't count for teaching so that is why it will take me 5.
But I won't be done: I will then have a year of credentials to be able to teach. And then I want to get my Phd in psychology. (thats my concentration right now) I guess you can say I love school!! |
Our school claims that 75 percent of students graduate within six years, like this is something to brag about.
I'll be here at least 5 years, because I'm majoring in something where it's very hard to get the necessary classes, and you have to take them in a certain sequence (English with a focus on creative writing) and I transferred from another school, so I lost a few credits that way. |
Not me!
The five year plan is nice if you have someone paying for your schooling, or you're going to a state school that's cheap. There was NO WAY IN HELL Mama and Daddy Munchkin were going to pay for a fifth year at this joint--they actually want to retire sometime this century. Which is fine...at this rate, I've sucked the marrow out of this experience we call college...and I'm ready to move onto bigger and better things, like grad school. :D Why would someone want to get out of school in four years or less? MONEY. MONEY. MONEY. Some schools are expensive, and a lot of people are on financial aid.
My school, unless you've taken a leave or are doing a program that requires 5 years (like a 5 year masters or a dual BS/BA degree), requires you to get outta there in 8 semesters. We have a track...by the end of your freshman year, you must complete 7 classes, 15 by your sophomore, 23 by your junior year, and 30 by the time you graduate. (Most graduate w/ 32 credits--4 a semester). Plenty of people take soul-searching leaves, or time off to work. But, you have to complete a degree in 8 semesters. You can't even use AP credit to shorten your time. |
I'm a 4th year junior (4th year in college-junior standing, not my 4th year being a junior...some people get that confused  ). I still have another year or year and a half left. I'm thinking very seriously of flipping my minor to my major, if I have the funds to do so...that will take another few years.
Actually a little comes out of our pockets...currently. Financial aid and scholarship pays a LOT of my tuition. And, I will be paying off the finanicial aid down the line, not my parents. |
OK, you got popcorn for this story? It's a long one.
After I graduated from hs, I did 3 years at a JC as a physEd major, transfered to a 4 year out of state school for 1 year, lost units and dropped down to freshman standing, transfered back home to the JC and reclaimed my lost units and my JR standing, took 2 semesters off to work, back to the JC for an additional year, transfered to a in state 4 year school, lost interest in physEd, CHANGED major, stayed at the 4-year school but hated the program for my new major, went BACK to the JC, stayed and got my AA then found my DREAM program at the Academy of Art College in Photography and will graduatehttp://www.handykult.de/plaudersmili...son/jaybee.gif in 1 1/2 years. No, i'm not going to grad school. I'm old, tired, I need a real job, and my bank account needs a real paycheck and I need a real vacation. Trust me when I say, I'm ready to end my college CAREER!! |
Well, I am on the 4 1/3 year plan. Supposed to graduate in the spring to be 4 years, but ended up having to take ONE freaking class over the summer. Yeah, sucks to be me, but boy oh boy will I be glad to get out of here!!!
|
This will be my fifth year in college and I'm not surprised it took me this long to graduate. I've had to work full time my whole college career and then juggle sorority, extra activities and school on top of that. I also took a semester off when I was engaged so technically I could have graduated in 4 1/2 years but 5 is okay too.
P.S. I graduate this DECEMBER! YEAH! FINALLY! |
I finished college in 4 1/2 years and I changed my major THREE times! :D
|
I'm in my third year here at LHU, and I will be graduating next spring with a BA in Political Science with a minor in History! :) I'm ready to get out of this place!
|
I changed majors three times, took a semester off and graduated in five years with some summer school. My little brother is currently a non-graduating senior at Northern Colorado but that has more to do with having to re-take a lot of classes.
Thing is, after I graduated I travelled, waited tables and went to a tech school program before getting a 'real' job at the age of 24. You have your whole life to sit in an office in front of a computer... I say to heck with being in a hurry, enjoy your youth. |
gosh, suddenly my college career has a bright sunshine in it
i am almost 24 and still have a year left i will be doing my internship next spring with the texas rangers |
Less than 20 days left. I filled up the semester stamp spots on my student ID. Got my cap & gown yesterday:D
|
-sigh- i was a theatre major for 3 yrs....then last fall, i opted to change my major to FRENCH (yeah, yeah...i know), and then i decided "what the heck....?" and took what was originally going to be my final semester off. God only knows when i am gonna graduate. i will be back in school in the fall, though, so woohoo! i'll never really leave.........
|
Most people I know graduated in 4 years unless they were engineering majors. They had a 5 year program. I knew a few students who graduated in three years due to AP credits and summer sessions. It seems to be a trend to graduate in more than four years.
|
The trend I've noticed that's caused this though is that the state regents (at least in Oklahoma) have upped the general ed requirements to include more classes. Also, many majors require LOTS more hours than others (and you'd be surprised which). At Central Oklahoma, Music Education is second only to premed in hours required (around 140 I think) my (current) major is 124 (I think).
|
I've been attending school as a part-time student for so long. Like some, I started at a junior college and I got my AA. then I went to CSU and major in Business management. But I changed my major to Urban Studies after my first year at Cleveland State. I took a break for a couple of years but I came back and now I'm seeing the finish line. MAN, I can't wait for next year to come so I can get the Hell out:D
|
This is my 6th straight year full time in college. I started with 2 majors (elementary education and special education) and then sometime during my first senior year (fall 2000 I think) I decided to add a music minor, only 30 credits but given that most music classes are only worth 1 to 2 credits it takes awhile. I will FINALLY graduate in May with a BSED, much to my dad's relief. I'm taking a break to teach for awhile before going back for my masters in reading specialist.
|
Anything I cannot stand is the braggarts who get through so quick! Boo On You!
I did 7 years and 1 summer school, 2 majors, and 2 schools! If had not gotten married, I would still be there!:) Hell, the best time of my life! I am Peter Pan and damn glad well except fo the mirror, More Dorian Grey!:( |
