What did you want to be?

What did you want to be when you grew up in elementary school? And has life turned out the way you expected?

The1calledTKE 04-11-2003 01:46 AM

Firefighter and forest ranger. My life has turned out mainly the way i expected, lost interest in those jobs as I got older.

SATX*APhi 04-11-2003 01:53 AM

Pediatrician since the age of 5, then OB/GYN as I was in high school.

Although I would love to go into medicine, something just tells me it is not what I am meant to do. I am majoring in International Relations, minoring in Latin American Studies. Not sure where that'll take me, but it seems I am going in the right direction.

AGDPrincess70 04-11-2003 02:00 AM

I wanted to be a fire truck.

Not a fire fighter. A fire truck.

LOL! That's cute. Definitely better than my sister. She wanted to work at McDonald's so that she could "play with the cash register." Yep, I made it to college and she didn't. Haha.

edited to add: I have to add this to the quotes thread! LOL

I am ROTFL @ you...you would never believe that I told my mother this when I was in preschool!!! I used to want to be a fire truck...then by elementary school I had bigger and better aspirations. I no longer wanted to be an inanimate object...I wanted to be...........................................a Unicorn!!! :p

texas*princess 04-11-2003 02:38 AM

I used to want to be a lawyer, an astronaut, the president of the USA and a very important fashion designer.

lol@AGDPrincess's fire truck comment. This completely reminded me of my little brother. When he was young and was asked "What do you want do be when you grow up?" He always exclaimed "I want to be a fish!"

I still joke around w/ him about it. hehehe ;)

AlphaFrog 04-11-2003 02:45 AM

I'm happy to say that when I was little I wanted to double major in Music and Psychology...and I am now a music therapy major, which is a perfect blend of the two! Guess I'm lucky living my lifelong dreams...:)

Optimist Prime 04-11-2003 03:00 AM

Professional wrestler. The Masked Bandit, the Masked Phantom, and the Masked Advenger. My face is too prety to get scarred by a belt.

TechAPhi 04-11-2003 03:27 AM

When I was really little, I wanted to be a TV weather person and then a veterinarian. Once I got into junior high, all I wanted to be was a writer. My two goals: To work for The Houston Post and to work for CNN. I've done them both. Now what?

To answer your second question James, I have another question: Does life ever turn out the way we expect it to? I am beginning to think not. Even having achieved those two aforementioned goals, it isn't/wasn't what I expected it to be -- or how I imagined it. Not that that is a bad thing, but somewhat surprising.

CardinalSM 04-11-2003 03:29 AM

I was the nerdiest little kid, but all through elementary and middle school, I wanted to be a paleontologist or an archaeologist. Yeah, yeah, I know.

And continuing with the fire truck thing, my little brother told my mom he wanted to be a skunk so people wouldn't bother him or take his toys.

MSSTCY1 04-11-2003 05:40 AM

I had to write a paper about what I wanted to be when I grew up in like 5th grade. I said I wanted to be a secratery. Who the hell says that?

I'm still in school, but I am not going to be a secretary. ( no offence to anyone that is, but my mom paid way too much money for school for me to work beside her).

AngelPhiSig 04-11-2003 06:02 AM

a teacher, a vet, a zoologist, a postman, an actor, a dentist...

Im in school to be a teacher, although in HS I wanted to be a Biology teacher, how did I end up an elementary ed major?

mu_agd 04-11-2003 07:18 AM

I wanted to be the Zamboni Driver for the Boston Bruins. I just thought it would be so cool to drive that thing!

AOIIalum 04-11-2003 07:52 AM

I wanted to be a teacher and said it for years. Fortunately, I realized I did not have the patience to become a teacher in enough time to change academic gears!

My youngest son wanted to drive the fire truck when he grew up. Not necessarily be a firefighter (or be a fire truck :D) but drive the fire truck!

White_Chocolate 04-11-2003 08:58 AM

a lawyer
a lawyer
a lawyer
a civil attorney(high school)

i'm getting a Communications degree with an intent to head to law school later

sigmagrrl 04-11-2003 09:23 AM

I always wanted to be a cashier. I love ringing up sales on my fake cash register. I would play Grocery Store all afternoon.
I did become one at Caldor my senior year of college....Not all it's cracked up to be! But at least I lived out my childhood dream!!

Wow, that was really cathartic...LOL

OUlioness01 04-11-2003 09:39 AM

i wanted to be a doctor or a nurse, then i realized that blood and other body fluids disgusted me. Than i wanted to be a lawyer. I actually never ever wanted to be a teacher until my senior year of high school, but I love my major and wouldn't trade it for anything.

aephi alum 04-11-2003 09:46 AM

I wanted to be a doctor, just like mommy and daddy.

When I was around 12, I decided to pursue computer science instead. I'd realized that (a) I'm not fond of the sight of blood, and (b) I was the only one in the house who could work the computer (or the microwave, or the VCR... ) And the rest, as they say, is history...

ksig600 04-11-2003 10:18 AM

I wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, or a celebrity as a child...Then as I got older I set more realistic personal goals

DeltAlum 04-11-2003 01:11 PM

I thought it would be pretty cool to be a bus driver. I liked the way the doors swing open.

Obviously, it didn't turn out that way. Thankfully. All the stuff I've gotten to do in TV production has been pretty neat.

xo_kathy 04-11-2003 01:36 PM

I wanted to be a dancer. I thought I would be a high school English teacher if the dancing didn't work. I also had a phase during 7th and 8th grade where I wanted to be a marriage counselor...??? I liked helping my friends with their boy troubles.

I am now a dancer, and I teach dance, but not English. I also still help my friends with their boy troubles, but am not liscensed, nor do I charge them!!! :D

Peaches-n-Cream 04-11-2003 03:00 PM

I wanted to be a doctor, a lawyer, and a movie star/actress. I am none of the above.

moe.ron 04-11-2003 03:10 PM

I wanted to be either a game designer or a game tester. also a comic book artist.

33girl 04-11-2003 03:45 PM

I wanted to be a dog trainer, singer or (direct quote) an actress like Samantha on Bewitched.

When I went to college, I was an accounting major for two years. Income taxes suck. I would have had to have a semester of them. I changed to marketing.

I now work in insurance.

I'm back to wanting to be a dog trainer.

Good point. Driving a bus doesn't sound so bad, either.

shopgirl 04-11-2003 03:54 PM

I was born to be a dancer. I know it. I have always known it. I used to dance in my mothers high heels to Solid Gold and Dance Fever.

With all the traveling my family has done, I've never been able to train properly. By the time I made it to high school I figured I was too old. Then I thought maybe I'd do it in college, but again, I felt too old. Now I look back and think, "damn, I wasn't too old!"

My soul is all about dance and music.

Aside from that, I've wanted to be a doctor since junior high. I'm still considering it...maybe a Physician's Assistant.

SilverTurtle 04-11-2003 03:55 PM

When I was very little I wanted to be a missionary in Africa. What little kid (I mean like 4-5 years old) has that goal?! In retrospect, I think I was a lot more interested in the ANIMALS in Africa than the people. I just met missionaries at church who had lived there or something. Because I remember really wanting to see giraffes & elephants up close in the African plains.

When I was in like 4 or 5th grade I was really into art & becoming an illustrator.

By 9th grade I wanted to be a professional musician. I went to college for 2 1/2 years majoring in music performance. Then I decided that I really liked performing, but not the political stuff that went along with being professional. So I switched to communications.

I interned at a radio station. Very fun, but I wouldn't want to do that forever.

I'm currently a manager in a copy shop.

I just went to a career fair today & am now seriously considering looking into applying for a special agent position with the federal office of Housing & Urban Development.

So I guess I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up! :D

damasa 04-11-2003 03:56 PM

When I was little I actually want to be a Pianist. Oddly enough I don't play the piano though.

MoxieGrrl 04-11-2003 04:44 PM

When I was young, I wanted to be a ballerina, a pro football cheerleader, or a doctor.

I hate blood, so no more doctor.
My genes left me hanging at 5'4" and muscular, so no more ballerina.
Pro football cheerleader is still in the running though.

Since my freshman year in high school, I wanted to be a therapist, and I'm well on my way!! :)

MoonStar17 04-11-2003 05:01 PM

LOL this is a cute thread!!!

When I was little I once cleaned EVERYTHING out of my closet, pulled my night stand in there and my play phone and made an "office" i sat there and shuffled papers and made phone calls, and had my mom bring me juice. :) I was a buisness woman!! lol

then i wanted to be a teacher in 3rd grade

then somewhere in elementary like around 5th -6th grade i wanted to be a marine biologist and became obsessed with the ocean...

then in middle school i was on the newspaper, quickly moved to editor in chief and then in high school went on the same path...

i tried journalism but then changed my major to elementary education after realizing how much i love kids and want to make a difference in their lives :D

YAY for teachers :D

juniorgrrl 04-11-2003 05:16 PM

When I was little I said I was going to be a lawyer because my parents were lawyers.

In High School, I wanted to get a PhD in Psychology, focusing on Gifted Education.

I also wanted to major in musical theatre, and perform on Broadway. My mom told me I was "too smart to be an actress" and only minimally encouraged my performing

I realize now I don't have the talent (or nerves) necessary for being a professional performer, but I wish I would have had more vocal and dance training.

In college I started as a Computer Science major; I quickly transferred to Information Systems.

Midway through my Sophomore year, I decided to go to law school. I want(ed) to specialize in Intellectual Property and Internet law.

Some days, I hate myself for taking the "safe" path. As I sit here listening to the Will Rogers Follies soundtrack (the last show I was in) I realize how much I miss performing.

SilverTurtle 04-11-2003 05:23 PM

Moonstar's post also reminded me of another 'career' I once played at when I was about 6.

I had all of these stuffed animals, and I would sit them on the stairs. Then I would pull my desk & chalkboard in front of them & 'teach' them stuff. I think my mom even has a photo of me doing that!

Now the only interest I have in teaching is at the college level, which requires more school for me.

PrincessHeather 04-11-2003 06:47 PM

I always wanted to be a dancer. When I was little you couldn't get me to sit down for anything! (sorry mom and dad!!:p )
But I stopped taking class and competing 2 years ago.
Now I want to be a teacher. I love working with kids!

xok85xo 04-11-2003 08:02 PM

a fairy princess, an entertainment lawyer, and an author..

i am definately none of these..i majored in psychology in undergrad with the intention of pursuing my education further and eventually getting phd so i could be a therapist..however, the thought of that does not really appeal to me anymore..my latest idea is to go back for my masters in education and become a school social worker...i'm sure it will change tomorrow tho

MeLikey 04-11-2003 08:14 PM

I wanted to be a model, actress, or singer. I did some modeling when I was younger, was an extra in 2 movies due to modeling (the extent of my acting career), and had a better singing voice when I was in 5th grade than I do now... so yeah, none of those things worked out. As for now, I'm graduating in May with a broadcast journalism degree, for which will not be all that helpful since I no longer want to be a reporter now. I want to work on movies doing ANYTHING. My goal in life is to work on movie sets, the whole atmosphere fascinates me. If anyone can help me out with that, let me know!

Sistermadly 04-11-2003 09:09 PM

A pediatrician... which is strange when you consider how much I dislike kids. :)

FiReKraCkEr 04-12-2003 12:08 AM

Actress, prima ballerina, teacher, singer, violinist, opera singer, CIA agent, pregnant wife of Brad Pitt, Olympic figure skater, fashion designer, CNN reporter, ESPN Broadcaster (for basketball), flight attendant, rock star......

I think I might end up being a Kindergarten teacher, English as a Second Language teacher, or a flight attendant.....I have no clue yet.

Rudey 04-12-2003 02:06 AM

My dad.

agger_rob 04-12-2003 10:33 AM

I always wanted to be a Disney animator when I grew up. I used to draw everything. Then for some reason I stopped and didn't draw for years. I tried doing it again a few months ago, and you lose the ability if you don't keep practicing. I think being a teacher will be more rewarding than working for a mouse anyway.
