Fraternity History thread

I'm a copycat, so in response to the sorority quiz that was posted last week, I made a quiz about early fraternity history (it's my first quiz, so give me a break if it sucks). Take a look at it at

http://www.funtrivia.com/quizdetails.cfm?id=125450

and post your results!

Dude, that kicked my ass.

I guess i need to get my hands on one of those Greek Anthologies. What are they called? Baird's Almanac or something?

Good quiz... there were a couple of ballbusters in there.

Kitso... the book you're looking for is Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities. I think the latest edition is the 20th edition. Dunno if Amazon.com carries it, and it's not a cheap book; runs about $50. But is is a very thoroughly researched book about GLOs.

AOIIalum 04-11-2003 07:43 AM

That was hard!

I got 2 correct.

EagleChick19 04-11-2003 09:12 AM

I got a 7 / 10. But, I guessed....

wptw 04-11-2003 09:14 AM

Great idea, docetboy.

I got 8 out of 10, and I was going to cheat on the 2 I didn't know (number of groups founded by 1860, and the year the NIC was founded) but I left my Baird's at home today.

Fun quiz, docetboy. I got 6 out of 10. I have books handy that would have had the remaining 4 answers, but I was trying to do it closed-book.

ksig600 04-11-2003 09:45 AM

5/10...

Not bad...I always forgot which orgs were in the Miami & Union Triads

enlightenment06 04-11-2003 09:57 AM

I got 3/10. Most of those questions I knew nothing about. You learn something new everyday.

Kevin 04-11-2003 10:06 AM

5/10. Tough quiz.

docetboy 04-11-2003 10:39 AM

If anyone is wondering, the questions were taken directly out of the Kappa Sig pledge manual, Bononia Docet. (So KSig600 - i'm dissapointed in your score!)

Believe the cost is about $60 from the Baird's Foundation. Someone has their address/contact info on the web. Can also be ordered from the North-American Interfraternity Council.

Don't know how accurate it is. Someone said that for my fraternity, their list of our chapters was incorrect. And that is something that can easily be verify with my fraternity using its website.

Hope this helps

I thought those questions looked familiar.

I got 8 out of 10...thought I should have done better though.

6/10 with no help from printed or other material. Honestly, I thought I would do a little better. Show's what I know.

I know, I know....In my defense...Its been 3 years since my pledgeship, and almost a year since I helped my little study his Docet. My chapter doesn't center our new member quizes over the "history of fratenal orgs." They are more centered around chapter history, and national/international history. Our NME only uses the sample questions in the book as a suggestion.

...I remembered SOME stuff...damn old age

SilverTurtle 04-11-2003 03:25 PM

5/10 not bad for a girl in a GLO that was founded after all of that stuff happened ;)

As for the Baird's manual... I *think* the last edition came out in the early 1990's, before many GLOs (or organizations of any kind) had web sites. The information was gathered from I/HQ's directly- either via phone or mail. And some chapter info can change quickly (with additions, closings, re-activations, etc.). It's still a very very good resource.

DeltAlum 04-11-2003 03:34 PM

I did a lot better the second time. HaHa.

GeekyPenguin 04-11-2003 04:11 PM

SigEp was founded after the Civil War (1901)...and the question says "Which was not founded in the years following the Civil War?" I'm confused.

sugar and spice 04-11-2003 04:28 PM

I got 8/10 . . . I rock.

Granted, I guessed on a lot of them. But still. :p

hoosier 04-11-2003 04:28 PM

Baird's over-rated

Actually, my friend Wilson Heller - the foremost fratenity historian - said the last few issues of Bairds were near worthless, printing whatever the GLO national office submitted. The GLOs were prone to hide dead and problem chapters, and change chapter names and founding dates to make themselves look better.

The earlier Bairds are much better.

I mistyped the question. I meant to ask what fraternity was not founded in the years immediately following the civil war (1-6 years afterwards. ATO was 1865, KappaSig in 1869, etc.

If anyone else wants to complain, I'd go ahead change the question for ya, and sorry bout that!

Don't worry about it. The early chapters and latter chapters, though containing important info, are not of as high importance as the chapters containing our Fraternity's history...and all I did was rephrase paragraphs in the early chapters to make questions.... (But always read your Docet!! It's the book every pledge KEEPS through life to remind him of his days as a undergraduate Kappa Sig!)

James 04-11-2003 09:20 PM

I scored 7/10 but I confess to being a good guesser also.

Tom Earp 04-11-2003 09:46 PM

docetboy, I did 4/10.. Old history I knew. Names no!

Yep, Baird's does get a little vauge after a point in time!

If you find find a Bairds for that little price, snap it up!

Some have gone for severel 100.00 of $$!

While the foremost authority, it so can be wrong. :)

Great Quiz tho!!! One sided, I tke it from reading the posters!

New Swisher Sweet Rep. I have is a PDT from Ks St. Good Guy!!!

Is there other questions on that site?

prospectiverushee 04-11-2003 09:59 PM

I got 5/10 and that was because I totally guessed. Great quiz!

kateshort 04-12-2003 04:00 PM

I guessed for everything and got 5/10. Some I could narrow down, but that was *hard*!

ZZ-kai- 04-12-2003 04:52 PM

William Raimond Baird.....

PSUSigKap 04-13-2003 10:57 PM
