Here is the e-mail that she sent me this morning:

Hey Boo,

Can you help me out? I'm trying to locate a website that will give facts regarding Blacks and our diversity as far as language (our slang terms i.e. sugar instead of diabetes) our eating habits, things that make up our cultural differences. I'm helping get a pamphlet for training physicians during orientation. I need by this evening any leads you can provide.


So folks, I am researching but if you know of some, please let me know in this thread. A thousand thank yous.:)

I couldn't find any decent websites with extensive slang listings, however there are quite a few books, including an African-American Slang dictionary currently on the market.

NO....but I am sure that whatever we come up with would be a lot worse!!! LOL!!! My mom calls me "Boo" also, somehow when she says it, it doesn't have the ghetto connotation as when you hear some dude in the street yelling "Ay Boo!" ;)

Since I helped my mom I guess will know later tonight when she gets home and peeps my research and since folks are talking about nicknames, let's share them.

My former stepfather called me SWEET PEA -- something else I think is nasty.

Ideal08 does not even know what my brother used to call me. :o

My dad calls me "turkey" when I act silly
My aunt calls me "Mushroom"....:confused: never got that one
My great grand mother called me "pumpkin"
My uncle calls me "Big Head and Ewww"..you'ed have to understand the relationship:D
My ex told me I suffered from the Gina disease (big head)
Think thats about all..other than people just shortening my name.

Get a load of this. My mom was in the hospital about to give birth to her fourth and final child. My grandmother calls her up and tells her if she had a girl she would have to name her FRANCESCA. My Granny had been watching The Price Is Right and saw a young woman on there with that name. Doing the daughterly thing, my mom agreed. Now my mom was told months before that she was having a boy and I was going to be named after my father. Well on that Easter Monday, April 19, 1976 at 8:06 am, I came into existance...and so did my many nick names.
Frank = Mom calls me that because she wanted a boy
Frankie = Dad calls me that cause Frank was to Masculine
Frankinstein = Kids started calling me that because I was a very tall child and they overheard my mom call me Frank
Nappy Head = Dad calls me that because I hated getting my hair combed as a child
Chesskat = Brother calls me that cause he says I smile like the cat in Alice in Wonderland :D :eek:
Fancy = After Jaime and Fancy got married on the Jaime Foxx show, her name became Franchesca King..... you know my first name and well my last name happens to be King as well;)

My gramps called me "That Girl" (I guess he kept forgetting my name)

All while growing up, and even now when they're trying to be funny, my family calls me Abu. Yep, like the name of Middle Eastern descent. Here's the story behind it: When I was potty training, my parents would sit me on the pot and step outside to let me do my business. For some reason, even then, I wouldn't go if someone was watching. So, they would always tell me to yell for one of them when I was done and they would come get me off. Well, I couldn't talk very well, so my "I'm through" came out as "Ahhhh Booooo". Everyone in the house would hear me screaming Ahhhh Boooo at the top of my lungs, but because they thought it was funny, they'd let me go on and on for a while. I have two older sisters and they just thought it was hilarious. This went on every night in my household. So, Ahhh Booo became one word and, to this day, you will hear them calling me Abu (as they spell it when writing it).

As a child, my family and their friends called me Doby Gillis or just Doby because I was so clumsy. Today few refer to me as Doby but thank God I grew out of my clumsiness.

I almost forgot one other name. Rudy!

When I was in college, we did a production of popular black sitcoms. Because Keisha Knight-Pullliam looks like me (I'm a few years older), I got stuck playing the part of Rudy. I had on a plaid skirt and a cardigan with two thick ponytails and ever since then, I was known on my campus as Rudy Huxtable.
So every now and then, when I see someone I went to school with who can't remember my name, they refer to me as lil' Rudy.

All of my immediate family and 1 aunt shortened my real name and just calls me by that.

2 Aunts and 2 uncles would call me MAMA

1 Uncle would call me Myrt, short for Myrtle.....(don't ask why, cuz I don't know)

My hunny calls me bad girl :p

My mom calls me Gene or booder (don't ask)

My uncle calls me Big Foot (because I'm like 3 inches taller than him, I call him Leprechan (sp?))

My SO calls me Bum.

My brother calls my cousin "Water Head" because his head is shaped a little bit like a water bottle (the gallon size) :D

For some reason, my aunt is called Trudy by her sisters and her father and Tootie by her nieces and nephews (we thought the older people were saying Tootie when they called her Trudy). Anyway, her name is Caroline. No one seems to know how that got started.

And of course the classics: Rae-Rae (girl cousin), Janie (mommy MJ), Ty (my brother Tyrone), and Pop-Pop (y'all know already)

Well I was blessed with the family nickname - "Wee-Wee" ... Primarily, because I was the youngest and was treated me like a baby...

My Brother nickname was "Pop"... and I had one cousin blessed with the nickname "Fatty," which she hated and probably the reason she lost alot of weight... Now, she is SKINNY!

I was speaking to my mother today and she said the sweetest thing. (I am glad that we are starting to work on our relationship :D) Anyway, she said "Hello my Butterfly!" I was like "uh Hey". So she said that she saw the most beautiful butterfly while she was sitting on her porch a few minutes prior and she thought about me and how I have blossomed/transformed into a beautiful young woman. She said that she was glad that I am opening up and it's beautiful, and that's her new nickname for me, "Butterfly". I thought it was mushy/sweet!

Aaaaaaaw how precious. :)

My nickname is Na or Na-Na. It was derived from my middle name, Renee. I HATE it! THe only people who are allowed to call me that are relatives and family friends who've known me all my life. My best friend cannot call me by that name.

My soror/cousin calls me Baby, because I am the youngest on my father's side.

My Mom and Dad call me Pooh

My mom calls me Tina....a shortened version of my middle name.


My friends call me Tudie...short for "Attitudie"


My husband calls me Tudie, with the big, fat booty. As if I haven't heard that one enough.

I've been called R2D2, Rudey Tudie and many others.
