Your own fashion/beauty faux pas
Sometimes we have days where we look like "that girl." Even though we all know how to look our best, sometimes we just don't. Anyone out there care to share?
My eyebrows struggle. I admit it. I just don't have the patience to tweeze all the time and never feel like paying to get them waxed. Pedicure? Pffftt.....every once in a while. I have dancer's feet, so I'm sure they look lovely when I rock my sandles every day. After my post-anorexic chubby phase, I did not go buy new clothes. Now I have dressy work pants that are too big, but I still wear them. And when I don't feel like drying my hair after the gym before work...I wear a claw clip. |
I proudly rock the superlong, slouchy sock when I wear gym shoes and am dancing/working out.
I used to wear them just casually w/shorts, but when I got to MO people told me they wouldn't hang out w/me unless I changed. It's hilarious b/c at high school in Chicago, if you didn't wear Wigwams or some other type of huge, long slouch sock, you were considered, um, to like girls.....think butchy type gym teacher.....yeah I dunno I swear they like made or broke your popularity, then I get here and my friends threaten to burn them... The 622- the only sock there is Wigwams will always be my fashion no- no. |
....in the past
*I used to sport roots *refuse to wear lotion (loooong time ago, like 12). *Wear sweatshirts w/ shorts *Wear plaid shirts *Wear perfectly matching clothes and accessories (i.e. purple shirt, purple pants, purple socks, purple shoes, purple scrunchies, purple ear rings, etc.) Oh those were the days. :o |

I went thru a phase where i would wear the same sweatshirt for days at a time, kind of like a jacket. we had a dress code at school so my fashion sense was limited. in jr high, i sported emerald green and royal purple jeans :D can't forget my vinyl airwalks. my first year of college i CHOPPED my hair off. but it wasn't in a good way. i looked like a mushroom cuz my hair is so thick and it wasn't meant to look that short. so glad it is now below my shoulders now. |
i wore skirts w/sneakers..i was very grunge, lol
flannel shirts i owned a couple pairs of cavericcis these were all years ago..recently, i'm not ashamed to leave my house on a sunday in old ratty warmups covered in paint.. i'll admit it. i also have several pairs of pants that i wear to work that are way too big.. there are also days where i'll get dressed for work, not really care what i throw on, and then the rest of the day whenever i look at myself in the mirror be like "what the hell was i thinking?"..not hat the outfits are bad per se, i just don't necessarily like them that day..if that makes sense oh yeah, occasionally i'll carry a black purse while wearing brown shoes because i really don't like my brown purse and need a new one, but haven't found one that i like..and sadly i can't afford the louis i want, so i pretend not to care, but deep down it drives me nuts that im accesorizing black w/brown. |
hmm.. when i was in high school, i didn't wear outfits like everyone.. i wore costumes.. hehehe.. i looked like i came straight out of the movie "Clueless"... I think what made it more weird is that everyone else in my high school wore shirts and jeans all the time .. I just had to be different. ;)
|
my fav outfit right now is -
-pair of light army green low rise cargo pants that are 2 sizes too big that i got for $6 on the clearance rack at old navy -old and I mean OLD ribbed black turtleneck -black velvet flip flops i got at rite aid for $7. LOL now i am fully aware I look like a grungy slob in this-- i wear it to work, to class, on weekends--but not OUT OUT, if that makes sense... so imagine my amusement when mr amycat's fashion obsessed sister told me i always look so cute and where did i get that outfit, she had to have it. I'm like, this whole outfit cost less than $30. lol |
I used to wear cute preppy outfits in high school because I had a dress code. It carried through to college for a little while until I discover the joys of wearing jeans, t-shirts, sweats, leggings, and sneakers to class. Suddenly, these items dominated my wardrobe. I was a mess for a while. I wore huge XXXL sweatshirts with leggings when I wore a size 8. So did everyone at my school! I got my act together, but for a while there  it was bad.
At least I wasn't as bad as my younger sister who was notorious for wearing sweaters with sweatpants.  She really thought that she looked cute, too. She also constantly wore blazers for a while with shoes and a handbag that can only be described as witch-like. :p She looks very good now. :) |
i have always been fashionably inclined, so to enlighten you all on my progress of style through the years.....
when was it not appropriate to wear 2 diff colored socks on each foot with some glow-in-the-dark high-tops...we're talking young here with some fashion sense....like, one foot would have hot pink then lime green, while the other would have lime green then hot pink...matching, of course, my jean shorts with lime green and hot pink ruffles on the bottoms. i was an example to all throughout 1987-1991...esp. with that spiral perm! i then enjoyed displaying the "preppy" look in middle school of a high ponytail with a big ribbon, socks up to my knees, and luggage-tag earrings WITH my initials....stylin'....100%...not to mention the obnoxious color lip-stick i chose to wear to accent those braces in the most positive of ways. high school...i dressed up. daily. 3 in heals walked into that gym to change into only the best work-out gear only to not sweat...ever....unless we played some b-ball. then, up came the socks again........ college....seeeeee.....for a while there i enjoyed the company of too much glitter and SILVER, SHINEY, SHINEY, SHINEY, SILVER eye shadow. hey....i was damn sexy! ;) so now, in my final college years, you can only imagine the loveliness i exude day in and day out :D |
I have only one thing to say.....
 FLASHDANCE  |

Remember the hats that Blossom and Clarissa wore - the ones that were kinda floppy and had the giant flower on the front holding it up?
Yeah, I had 2 of them. I thought I looked so great in them. Thank goodness I had a uniform for school! In HS, after I started going to private school, I still wore plaid skirts and button down blouses. But with tennis shoes or hiking boots. I just couldn't break the catholic schoolgirl thing. I had a phase where I wouldn't wear pants. Ever. I'd wear skirts or shorts, even in winter. That was when I was about 10. In HS, I would wear my converse all-star low tops with skirts/dresses. although, I think that was sort-of cool at the time. Not sure. I cringe when I think about the white jean shorts I wore on my senior class trip. My only consolation is that everyone had them. Right now, I feel really conspicuous with my Kate Spade Claire - I feel like its screaming "I CAN'T GET OVER THE FACT THAT I PAID 200 FOR A PURSE SO NOW I CARRY IT EVEN THOUGH ITS OUT OF STYLE!" For school, if I wear my brown clogs, I just don't switch purses, even if its black. I just don't have the energy. But all day I pray that no one notices! |

more from me: i used to wear leggings w/jean shorts..one of my favorite outfits in 7th grade was to wear these black leggings w/flowery print, jean shorts, my paula abdul concert tshirt(which was black w/print and other colors, so it actually did match the leggings) and keds..damn i was rockin |
My past fashion faux pas:
Remember the skirts with the little shorts already attached underneath? I had one of those in hot pink I wore lime green socks in elementary school...but it was in Flannel plaid shirts in high school Vests in 8th grade...what was I thinking? Oversized t-shirts My current fashion faux pas: I only have one purse, I don't care about shoe color or anything like that so it doesn't matter My ultra-baggy drawstring khakis that I wear a lot...too comfy to give up I do hope that someone backs me up on the lime green socks! |

hmm.. yea. :D |
I remember wearing IOU sweatshirts. They were the coolest thing in the universe for a time. You could get them 2 for 50 bucks at Merry-Go-Round. Plus, I would dress them up with a sweet color-coordinating turtleneck.
I also wore pj pants to class a lot in college. I admit it. Everyone else did, so it was ok. :) For a short time in high school, I was the cheerleader with short, spikey purple hair. That was pretty cool. During the Clueless-era, I rocked the plaid miniskirt with thighhighs. I guess those are still in style among the stripper set. *Edited to add* The matching EVERYTHING outfits? Yeah, 5-7-9 was the place to go if you wanted to be accessorized from head to toe. I owed a few of those babies. |

Oh god, I did...I had forgotten. Lime green and hot pink together. What a match.
Did anyone else do the "french roll" to their jeans? I never did, but the people in the class above me did in middle school. I can't remember what it was but the bottom of your jeans were rolled and folded in a certain way. And you wore that with white keds lol |

I've never really been one to be completely in style, but at least over the last 4-5 years, I've been much more in tune... I'm the kind of girl who just likes to be comfortable, so sometimes I say screw the fashion rules. Let's see...
in middle school and the beginning of high school, i was somewhat of a tomboy, so i'd wear ratty jeans, airwalks/etnies, and either a plain color sweatshirt or one of my brother's flannel shirts. I looked pathetic. Once i finally realized that I looked terrible in high school, and that I had these (although small) things called "breasts," I tried to look a little better. Typically, I wore jeans all the time. I still do. I LOVE jeans. But at least I wore makeup, brushed my hair, and tried to flaunt what little I had. Now I'm still into just wearing Jeans (or jean skirt, when apporpriate), but i can dress it up a bit more. I'm a huge fan of black pants (have 5 pairs), so when i dress nicer, that's my thing. I'm still not into the more expensive fashion... I can deal with shopping at Hollister and American Eagle, but I get annoyed with Abercrombie (everyone owns the SAME thing). I just wear what's comfortable... |
Does anyone remember those little clip like things that you would pull one side of your shirt through? I used to have tons of those....:o
I also rocked the lime green socks, and hot pink ones. In fact if something was hot pink, I would wear it. I also used to wear spandex biker shorts with coordinating tops. :o In the 8th grade I thought I was this big hard ass and I'd run around in raggedy jeans, beat up Etnies or Airwalks, and flannel shirts. Plus pounds of black eyeliner around my eyes. There are NO pictures of me from this time period however, thankfully. No one ever believes that I looked like this though b/c I am a super girly girl now too. |

about those socks, i remember always wanting the wear two pairs of socks (different colors) with my LA Gear sneakers with glittery hot pink shoe laces. i also remember crying until my parents got me reboks. |
Didn't read the thread so this may have already been mentioned. Hypercolor and Skidz were pretty bad.
Proud to say I haven't had a fashion faux-pas since middle school though! |
I was a lil' tomboy in elementary and junior high. As a matter of fact, I dressed better than my brothers did.:D
I did the multicolor socks too--if I had a red and black outfit, I had the red and black socks to match. Sometimes 1 red/1 black, sometimes both. I also used to tie my t-shirts in a knot in the back--with and without the little clips!! I did stirrup pants, leggings with the lace at the bottom, biker shorts with the stripe and the shirt to match, acid wash jeans, muticolored shoestrings, and coordinated accessories and nail polish. In high school I followed everybody else and wore Abercrombie, AE, Old Navy, and Gap. I loved my AE overalls (wish I could find 'em now!!). Senior year I lived in pj pants, sweats, Adidas slides, and t-shirts. I'm so glad I finally evolved into the fashionista that I was meant to be!!:D |
Past fashion mistakes:
1. Can anyone say wind suits?? I totally rocked those in 6-7 grade! 2. When I was growing out my bangs in 7th grade, I didn't know what to do with the long stringy pieces. Now, I am still not the best with hair but I am certainly better than this--because I hair-sprayed them to the side. Yes, hair-sprayed them to the side. :o 3. I definately went punk in 8th-9th grade: huge pants, huge shirts, chain/ball jewelry, what I considered to be "ironic punk" eyeshadow (ie, bright blues and pinks). Today I can still rock the colored eyeshadow but only because I am a makeup goddess and I have learned about something called BLENDING. 4. Huge-ass glasses til I got contacts junior year of HS! 5. Shorts. I DESPISE shorts for any reason besides working out. 6. I LOOOVE makeup and nailpolish. I am like, the queen of these. Ok, so one time I tried this thing I read about in cosmo that was supposed to make swirly nail patterns (your pour two colors into a glass of water and dip your fingers). IT DOESN'T WORK!!! Never try this. 7. Farmer's tan. Even growing up on a farm is no excuse! (Which I did!) Current fashion mistakes: 1. Right now I have no springy clothes at school except for my party clothes and tshirts, so I wear a Pi Phi tshirt like every day. I guess that shows spirit, though! 2. I definately rock my boyfriend's oversized fraternity tshirts some mornings. 3. I don't like belts, so I don't wear them. I think they're uncomfortable. I know it's bad, but whatever. 4. I paint my nails every Sunday, so by the weekend, they're always chipped.:( 5. I buy stuff from Wal-Mart, Goody's, etc. No one ever knows!;) 6. I have a fake D&G shirt. 7. Wal-Mart flip flops---with EVERYTHING!:D |
OMG! To put this in the right perspective, it WAS the '70's.
I used to buy my clothes at the "head shop". ( Granny gowns and peasant tops.) Well, I bought a pair of pants that were striped in several shades of orange/yellow/red. Honestly, it looked like I had a sunset running up to my arse! |
LOL! The seventies! I must have looked great with bone-straight, waist-length hair!
And justamom, did you --like my sister and I--wear white or frosted lipstick in the sixties?Or bright fishnet hose--or go-go boots?:o |
No go-go boots, but frosted lips AND racoon eyes...remember all the white under, over and around the eyes???
Plus, I had really long hair so I took a little braid and ran it across my forehead. OH, and don't forget "flowers in the hair", yep! Now Carnation, how low did your hip huggers go and how tiny was your halter top. I have pictures!:o sshhhh-Did you ever paint a flower on your face? |
Socks with sandals...not a good look!
|
WHITE GIRL SHOES! (not mine, but I seen way too many in the early 90's)
|
Too many to name...
-I should truly be in the Bad Hair Hall of Fame. In elementary school I had a constant perm. In junior high it was modified to the big SPIRAL perm (anyone else try to get "Baby's" hair from Dirty Dancing?) with high bangs. High School was just really screwy, SHORT bobs. Finally senior year it started coming together once I stopped going to my mom's hairdresser  . -Bubble skirts-I used to rock my acid washed bubble skirt with a white Joey McIntyre shirt that had lime green and hot pink squiggles, two scrunchies (lime green and pink), hoop earrings, two pairs of socks (guess what colors) and white Keds I had puff painted. Oh Lord. -Umbros (soccer shorts) and Adidas Sambas to school. -Sweatpants to school (this was at a very preppy high school). -Flannel shirts. God bless grunge. -Anyone remember when B.U.M. was THE label to have? In 9th grade I had two B.U.M. sweatshirts (purple and peach) that I thought I was so cool in. |
!!
okay, in hs i was the ultimate 90's hippy. among other things....
i started gaining weight in hs and still tried to wear clothes ment for smaller people. 1. crinkle skirts with wool socks and sandles. 2. tshirt with overalls and a flannel shirt over it 3. had the ultra long staight hair 4. denim pants (not jeans) with a denim top 5. hanes "wife beater" tank top undershirts (no offense, that's seriously what they are called around here) 6. vietnam war combat boots (from my dad) with cut off shorts (and the tanktop undershirt) in middle school i tried to be the total in style chick. i used to own these black and white diamond pattern leggings and this black and white poka dot babydoll dress that i wore together with a big black hat. i totally emulated clarissa! oh yeah! and i used to use aqua net like it was going out of style (no pun intended). one day i sprayed so much on my hair that it ended up looking white. oh yes, i went there. in college i did sometimes wear sweatpants to class sometimes, but not much. JEANS!! still my all time favorite. anything goes with jeans. a lot of times i just didn't really care what i was wearing and just didn't match, but usually i did look somewhat okay. junior and senior years i did end up going out to the bars in jeans, tshirt and wal mart flip flops. no joke, i seriously did. i just didn't care at that point. i was there to get my drink on, not hit on the guys. gee, wonder why i'm not married yet??? now i'm getting better. i like to dress nicely and look nice when i go out. i even wear make up now. shelley j sigma k |
I used to own the greatest shoes ever:
LA Gear with the flashing lights in the bottom. I was the pimp daddy, uh yeah. |
I can't tweeze, it just hurts and I have blonde eyebrows so I just wax every 2-3 weeks.
My pink purse with green palm trees (nuff said) The shoe laces and random ribbons I use as belts and hair ties, yes ladies I even made a ribbon to wear in my hair to formal. My flips, the just appear to match everything. Even the sparkles. My cheap jewlery wich I love and yet still get compliments on ALL of the time. I really do love my $7.00 ring. |

And yes...raccoon eyes, courtesy of Yardley, in junior high. I am getting sooo embarrassed here! |
who here wore lipstick with a different color lip liner?? i have never worn makeup but everytime i see somebody who does this....

oh hell yeah..umbros were the thing, and i always, ALWAYS wanted a pair of sambas..but never got them :( and i can one up the bum sweatshirt..i had a whole bum ensemble..i thought i was the coolest ever...it was like a light maroon hooded sweatshirt w/the same color sweatshorts..i had bought it as a back to school outfit and i couldn't WAIT until it was cold enough outside to wear it |
breathes -
you so shouldn't have said that!!!! i'm on my way to get some now! you think i'm joking, but i'd seriously wear them. in fact i'm due for a wal mart run for flip flops. they do go with everything. :D shelley j sigma k |
KNICKERS! I had a dark green pair that I wore with green argyle wool socks that I still own. I also had a purple pair that I wore with pink sparkly socks. We all wore knickers that year.
