Severe Acute Respitory Syndome
Ok.. I'm really freaking out how rapidly this thing is spreading!!! And now there are a couple of 'probable' cases a few counties away from where I live
|
I am convinced I have it. Actually, my continous dry couch for the last 3 weeks is due to a change in meds, but I sometimes swear I have SARS. Except for the fact that I have no fever and havent been to Hong Kong this week.
Why is it this chit always comes from Hong Kong? Why is that? |
Toronto has been hit badly with SARS...
http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/...al/?query=sars Last night i had some chinese from toronto check-in, i showed them where to park their own vechile - &#$@ that. |
This isht is pretty scary, at first it was a few isolated cases in southeast Asia but just yesterday they quarentined a flight arriving in California from Tokyo. Scary stuff :(

case definition
The previous CDC SARS case definition (published March 29, 2003) has been updated to clarify that CDC's definition of travel to areas of suspected or documented community transmission of SARS includes airport transit.
Suspected Case: Respiratory illness of unknown etiology with onset since February 1, 2003, and the following criteria: Measured temperature greater than 100.4° F (greater than 38° C) AND One or more clinical findings of respiratory illness (e.g. cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, hypoxia, or radiographic findings of either pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome) AND Travel† within 10 days of onset of symptoms to an area with documented or suspected community transmission of SARS (see list below; excludes areas with secondary cases limited to healthcare workers or direct household contacts) OR Close contact* within 10 days of onset of symptoms with either a person with a respiratory illness who traveled to a SARS area or a person known to be a suspect SARS case. † Travel includes transit in an airport in an area with documented or suspected community transmission of SARS * Close contact is defined as having cared for, having lived with, or having direct contact with respiratory secretions and/or body fluids of a patient known to be suspect SARS case. Areas with documented or suspected community transmission of SARS: Peoples' Republic of China (i.e., mainland China and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region); Hanoi, Vietnam; and Singapore Note: Suspect cases with either radiographic evidence of pneumonia or respiratory distress syndrome; or evidence of unexplained respiratory distress syndrome by autopsy are designated "probable" cases by the WHO case definition. |

yea this is bad, cos not only am I a hypochondriac (and those of you that are also, know that is SUCKS cos you always think you have everything!)
but I breathe weird and am always short of breath. |
I am in Toronto right now, which is the largest hostspot outside of Asia. 11 people have died here. My grandfather has been in the hospital for three weeks (not with SARS), but due to quarentine this weekend was the first i was able to visit him, and even now i have to go through a rigourous screening process before I can get in.
It's pretty scary shit |

This SARS is really scary. It reminds me of when AIDS first became known to the public but before they knew how it was transmitted. The news last night said that they were looking to quarantine people with or exposed to SARS. |

They have indicated it is a lot sturdier than many known diseases-for instance, it can live on a surface though I don't know how long. More worrisome...it appears to be airborne so just BREATHING it makes it far more communicable than say MONO.
Consider this-You are on a plane that landed in Singapore then returned to LA. The previous guest had SARS but was unaware. Whatever Membrane or source of FLUID their hands came in contact with can be transmitted to the railing, the door knob, the call button... It's now in Florida and we all know...SPRING BREAK...think of all the things people will touch or share oxygen with...THAT'S scary. Here comes MOMMA! Be sure to wash your hands before-during and after any activity! BE DISCRIMINATING and ask to see their passport or drivers license! Think my son will listen??? edited to add-Nor in La...but we have West Nile and a serial killer. Man you lucky! |
I just got back from visiting my Grandad at the hospital. It appears that the Hospital he is staying in now has 2 reported cases of SARS. When me and my sister showed up, we were tol we weren't allowed to see him because "only the wife and sons were allowed in". I explained to them that I had flown in from Ottawa to visit him, my sister explained that she hadn't seen him in a month. Finally they let us in, one at a time, and only after we doned surgical masks and had our temperture taken, as well as filled out a form about our recent travels (ie have we gone to Hong Kong). It is really eerie walking around a Hospital that is normally busy, and having nobody around. It's scary really, how much this is affecting the daily routine around here. The death toll in Toronto is up to 13, with more than 230 cases being reported. I just hope a solution can be found soon.
