Convention 2001
Welcome back to GC (slow as it may be), Conventioneers!
OTW, now I am quite upset with you... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif How could you not post a convention synopsis for us immediately? We are all dying to hear the details...latest AGD gossip, all the pretty new jewelry and AGD souvenirs, news on the Centennial celebration. I demand an accounting, ASAP! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
OTW stayed in Atlanta for an extra day...plus it takes hours to get back to Hawaii http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I'm sure she'll post something when she can!
ANYONE back from convention - Please tell all! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
Whoops, I forgot that OTW was staying an extra day--OK, sweetie, you have a 24-hour reprieve. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif But what about our other sisters? What do you ladies know? Please share!
(PS: I just wanted to let everyone know that on the AOPi bulletin boards, someone mentioned how AGD has a ton of sisters on GC. Yay us!) |
Don't we also have the most chapter webpages? AGD's are just technologically in the groove! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOL you guys. I just got back yesterday afternoon...9 hours flying is enough to force me to go to bed right away.
My biggest regret was not being able to get some pictures with Megan, Jenny, and Kate. We were all so busy that there wasn't a time where we could get together! Plus, with 600+ sisters there, finding someone was really difficult. I met Jenny right away at the Registration booth and immediately everyone poked fun at the fact that we spend so much time online. I then met Megan at the Rose Garden later on that afternoon. She served as a page with one of my chapter sisters. They all looked so nice! Katie Jolley informed us that the new and improved IHQ website will be up and running SOON. She worked with many consultants to develop our new logo, the "surrounded by sisterhood" slogan, and the new site. The new site will incorporate a "Sisters Only" page as well as allow us to turn in our chapter reporting online. The food was FANTASTIC and yes I did notice the red, buff, and green. I even took a picture of every dessert we had at our meals because they were works of art! Feast of Roses even included Filet Mignon and a Lobster sauce. At the Foundation dinner we received cute little flashlights, at the Epsilon Pi dinner we received little Rose Bowl charms, and at Feast of Roses we received a heart-shaped AGD mirror. This is in addition to the $$$ I spent at Burr, Patterson, & Auld...not to mention the $$$ I spent at the Rose Garden. There were many Collegiate and Alumnae Awards given out, but it's simply too long to list. If you want the results on a particular chapter or award, feel free to email me. Elise at alphagam.net also says that she'll post up the official results soon. As far as logistics go, I also learned that the Collegiate Five Star Program has been revised...and personally I am happy about that because this will definitely help my chapter become five-star. I almost lost my dinner when I found out that we were going to do our hula at the Living Circle. We had practiced a hula for the Foundation Dinner, but we were told that they wouldn't have any time for us. They then told us that they were going to perform at some inopportune time between sessions, but then the sessions ran late. DeeDee Smith Evans then needed us to get everyone relaxed for the Living Circle. We had less than 5 minutes notice! It was a bit scary as 600+ pairs of eyes watched our every move. Still, everyone was happy, we did great...and that was one of my most memorable Convention moments. The Honors of Epsilon Pi was an especially emotional part for my chapter as members of our alumnae chapter received honors. In addition to that, seeing the alumnae initiates initiated was also a sight to see. Two of the initiates had their daughters as their sister moms. One initiate actually pledged AGD thirty years ago. However, due to certain circumstances she wasn't initiated. Last Friday, her original sister mom from thirty years ago cried as she became one of our newest sisters. Katey and Leslie...I was able to sit down and chat with Tracy and Amy! Be sure to tell them I said hi! All in all...the Georgia hospitality was amazing. From the hotel people to the shuttle drivers...from the waitresses to even that bum who helped us get to Centennial Park...they were all so nice! I am currently waiting for my pictures to get developed. I wasn't able to get them done in an hour last night so I'll pick them up today. I'll try to get them scanned ASAP and I'll try to get them on GC when time permits. GC's been going through extensive improvement lately...so who knows when I'll be able to post them...or even log on. For those who weren't able to go this year...I hope to see you all July 17-21, 2004 at the Chicago Marriott in Chicago, Illinois! OTW, it sounds like you had a very busy time @ convention! Did you get to buy anything? What did you do on your extra day?? :0)

Hey Nina!
On Sunday we went walking through Downtown and made our way to Centennial Olympic Park. We then went running through the Olympic Rings water fountain. Since CNN was right there we went on their studio tour. I was in awe of everything there...especially the set of TalkBack Live! Then we went to the Underground and bought a few gifts for home over there. We also made our way to the World of Coke and went on their tour. It was fun playing tourist! We were too tired to walk all the way back to the Marquis so we ended up taking the MARTA. I was excited to ride my first city train...but I could tell my chapter sisters were terrified! We went to dinner at the Hard Rock...and after that we were too tired to do anything else, so we stayed at the hotel and packed. It was a VERY long day. |
Hello! Sandy, I am so sorry we didn't get to take a picture together! They made it rough to hook up with people since they didn't have a message board. It was just good to meet you and Kate in person!
I had an amazing time at Convention, meeting everyone and getting to know the other LC's and LA's!!! We're quite the wacky bunch. I think my favorite Convention moment was the Initiation service! I was so nervous, but it went very well. I remember being at the last Convention watching the service and thinking "Oh, I want to do that!" So it was fun to be up there. I am really excited about the new website! They had pages of it printed out on display and it looks much more like the other NPC groups. Very Red! LOL The only other updates I have is that the prices from Burr, Patterson and Auld will be going up soon. That's all for now!!! ------------------ Jenny |
Wow, girls, sounds like it was awesome! I'm glad everyone got home safe and sound. I am surprised though, Centennial is in Chicago??? Why is that? I would have thought they'd do it in Syracuse. Does anyone have a reason for that?
|
I was a bit surprised at that too. It was funny because at the end of the Final Business Meeting, there was some oldies music playing...and it sounded like cheesy Hawaiian music. The girls behind me were like "OH MY GOD WE'RE GOING TO HAWAII!". Now, while that may sound ideal, I know there's no way that was going to happen--especially for the Centennial Celebration.
When they announced that it was going to be in Chicago, you could tell that a lot of people were surprised. Naturally, those from the Midwest were ecstatic, but I think that most people were expecting NY. There's also signups going around if you want to help out for the Centennial... ------------------ A single seed...becomes a Rose of incredible beauty. How do we sign up to work at the next one?

A Centennial Questionnaire was included in the Convention materials.
The following areas need volunteers for 2004:
If you want more info or a copy of the questionnare, contact: Benita Dick 2005 Apollo Road Richardson, TX 75081 benita@airmail.net or Ruth Henritze 5029 Coventry Court Boulder, CO 80301 rbhenritze@aol.com |
does AGD pay for you to go down if you are volunteering, paging etc..?
------------------ Katey, ZA chapter of AGD "Could I have been anyone other than me?"-Dave Matthews |
Maybe Jenny can help out here...
I think IHQ only pays for official delegates (chapter president, advisor). I know our Alumnae President paid her own way...and Kapua (our page) paid her own way. Since our LA was paid for, I'm going to assume that LCs were taken care of also since they had to work throughout the Convention. I have a feeling that the Centennial Celebration will cost significantly more than this year's, especially since it's going to be longer and the facilities may be more lavish (since it's our 100th Birthday and all). Still, if I can save a dollar a day until July 2004 I'm sure I'll be able to afford it. Still, since it will be in Chicago, I'm sure most of you will be able to road trip it there. I wish I could. Save those dollars, girls! ------------------ A single seed...becomes a Rose of incredible beauty. A single grain of sand...becomes a Pearl of great worth. A single great idea...becomes a Century of success. Go Alpha Gam! |
Maybe they (IHQ) could give us a price more than 3 months before the Convention? Or at least an idea of the cost, if not the total.

Oh most definitely. Payment for this Convention was due three months before and most of the information was given out at least 6 months before. Being that this will be the our Centennial, I'm sure that we'll all have ample time for information since they want many of us to attend the celebration.
|
So funny you should mention the 'dollar a day" idea, OTW. While I was reading this thread yesterday afternoon, I decided to do just that!
I now have $2 saved. I guess great minds think alike! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif |
I will keep my ears open and pass along any information I hear about the cost!
Hey, I forgot another tidbit of good news that we found out at Convention! Miss Iowa was crowned while we were there (so I assume from the announcement that was made) and is an Alpha Gam! I thought that was pretty cool. ------------------ Jenny |
Greetings again from Georgia!! Glad y'all had a blast! I loved the hula dance except for the fact that y'all barely turned our way!! Wish I had my video camera!
BTW, I had heard that Indianapolis wasn't chosen possibily because the HQ needs remodeling. That was my first thought of where 2004 would be. Plus Chicago has STRONG alumnae chapters/clubs. I know that y'all are tired. I stayed until Sunday and only had to drive 45 minutes. I'm still recovering! Atlanta won Best Alumnae and Junior Circles! That is very special considering we almost went inactive about 4 years ago. Come on back to Georgia when you can stay longer! |
Welcome to GC, AGDLynn!
I feel really bad about how the dance was structured. We were supposed to do it for the Foundation dinner so everyone could get a good view, but because of time constraints everything got nixed...until DeeDee thought that it would be a great idea if we did it at the Living Circle. 5 minutes notice is enough to make me freak out! I was lucky enough to have a wonderful sister (I'm kicking myself because I can't remember her name) tape it on my video camera. I had my Hi-8 with me during the whole Convention...and I was fortunate to get at least an hour's footage on there. Kinda shaky, but it'll still give me memories! ------------------ A single seed...becomes a Rose of incredible beauty. A single grain of sand...becomes a Pearl of great worth. A single great idea...becomes a Century of success. Go Alpha Gam! |
Hi girls! Sorry its taken so long...
Convention was great! I did get to meet Sandy, and I already knew Jenny, but I never met Kate, unfortunately. I served as a page so I was busy during certain times. It was an awesome experience and we got to meet a lot of cool people. I thought that International Council would be all formal and proper- nope, some of 'em are even kinda goofy at times! The first day was geared more towards alumnae and the second was more towards collegians. Meeting the alumnae AGD's was awesome- it's such an amazing thing to know that they may be 80 and I'm 20- but we hold some of the same things dear to our hearts. I'm very proud to say that Beta Eta did very well. Our awards made all of our hard work and stress worth it! Oh and the hula dance was AWESOME!! Sandy- did ya hear me and Jenny yell for you?!? You guys were great! Will you tell Kapua I said HI! I spent a lot of money at Burr, Patterson, and Auld- dangles, and I bought my mom the mother's pin for her b-day. I only spent $10 at the rose garden and that was on a convention t-shirt. I have too many AGD shirts anyway. I could probably wear one everyday for 2 weeks before I'd have to do laundry! The food was really good- it's usually hard to prepare and serve that much, but the staff at the hotel were amazing. And as an Illinois girl- I'm very excited that 2004 is in Chicago. I wish it was in Syracuse, but I heard that they don't have the capacity, and there isn't an airport IN the city. And I don't think Indianapolis is big enough either. So yea, Chi-town here we come! Only four hours travel time for me!! The Initiation was great. I catch more each one I go through. And it always makes me cry.. The Initiation team did an absolutely wonderful job! As for cost, I'm starting to save. I paid my own way(and drained my savings, not that it was that big) but it was well worth it. And, anyone who gets a LC this year- be ready- they're a kooky bunch! They'll be fun! Sandy was so detailed in her post, I don't know what's left!! I'm sure I'll think of more later!! Megan "I'm an Alpha Gam and I'm proud that I am..." |
SIUAGD- You talked about the mothers pin, what does it look like??? I've never seen it before!! I would love to get one for my mom!
------------------ Katey, ZA chapter of AGD "Could I have been anyone other than me?"-Dave Matthews |
The mothers' pin consists of what I believe is a 4 leaf clover (correct me if I'm wrong) with the Alpha and Gamma letters on a Delta. On each corner of the Delta there is a small seed pearl.
I bought my mom that pin when I was initiated, and though she wears it often I had to consult the catalog to remind myself on how it looks like! ------------------ A single seed...becomes a Rose of incredible beauty. A single grain of sand...becomes a Pearl of great worth. A single great idea...becomes a Century of success. Go Alpha Gam! |
Speaking of the mother's pin (which is really pretty! - I didn't realize that we initiate mothers when we install new chapters! I thought that was such a cool idea. I think they're tossing around the idea of having this done at already established chapters for mothers of members, but who knows when that program would be developed. I know one of the men's groups do this with their dads and it helps out with alumni support like crazy! I think it would be great for AGD to try. Just a little FYI.
|
I think that would be a wonderful idea.
At my chapter we have a Presents ceremony in the Fall to introduce the new members to our alumnae and families. In addition to this, we present the spring initiates because we don't hold a Presents ceremony in the spring. I was fortunate to have my mom attend and find out what Alpha Gam means to all of us. My mom's originally from the Philippines, so she really didn't know what sororities were about until she got to America, but even then her images were filled with Animal House and the Tri-Lambs and every single 48 hours Anti-Greek segment imaginable. That's why she was so worried about my health and safety when I decided to join Alpha Gam. When I got home from Convention, she and I sat down and I played my Convention video for her and she could not stop smiling. She was amazed as to how many sisters I met and she thought our songs and achievement luncheons and dinners were simply beautiful. I told her about the women initiated into our Fraternity, how 3 of them are mothers of AGDs..and I couldn't help it, I actually teared when I told her how special it was. It'd be a dream come true if my mom wanted to join our Fraternity! It would be so great if one day IHQ could incorporate mothers' chapters...I'll be crossing my fingers! ------------------ A single seed...becomes a Rose of incredible beauty. A single grain of sand...becomes a Pearl of great worth. A single great idea...becomes a Century of success. Go Alpha Gam! |
I know at our chapter, we initiated one mother of a current alum (the alum was our chapter advisor at the time, and her Mom was our "House" advisor). We also initiated an alum's daughter. These women were very interested in becoming part of Alpha Gam and contribute very much!
