DableST_1 04-01-2003 01:17 AM

Hey Sorors/sisterfriends

I know it's been a long time since you heard from me. I am preparing myself to audition for the Lyric Opera in Chicago.

Ok now to answer the question, I play the violin, cello, sax, clarinet, piano, trumpet, harmonica and the flute!!! But my main instrument is voice. I am hoping one day to become an orchestra conductor!!! With God's grace, we'll see!!!

AKA2D '91 04-01-2003 08:55 AM

I began taking piano lessons in the 1st grade (by force) . I then lettered in Piano in high school. I didn't really take it seriously, but now I wish that I would have. Every now and again when I'm at my mother's I'll hit the black and whites.

I played the flutophone in the 6th grade.

Mz Destiny 04-01-2003 10:31 AM

Ok I was cracking up when I saw that!! ;) I know you were jamming on it though! :p

I played the recorder in Elementary school.
The Clarinet from 3rd to 12th grade...that also incorporated the Bass Clarinet and Oboe.
I played the Xylophone in the marching band.
And I play the piano...only when I go to my parents house though. :D

CrimsonTide4 04-01-2003 12:16 PM

I forgot one. . .the TAMBOURINE

come on folks, have fun today. :D

Gina1201 04-01-2003 12:23 PM

I played the piano while in elementary and then again in high school. I was forced to do this by my grandmother.

ClassyLady 04-01-2003 12:31 PM

I played piano. I wasn't very good but I tore it up at my first and only recital. I can still play that song to this day.

D.COM 04-01-2003 12:46 PM

Recorder - Elementary school - "When the Saints Go Marching In" (I can still play it now, lol) and the school song.

Xylophone - Elementary school - A whole bunch of Christmas songs, etc.

That's about it for me ;)

I played the viola from 4th grade through 8th and then I switched to the violin in 9th grade. I played for two years in high school and then I became to cute/cool/stupid to keep playing. Now I wish I had kept with it. I could be like that girl on Jay-Z's concert special.

Honeykiss1974 04-01-2003 01:29 PM

The recorder ( I think every kid in elementary school throughout the US has played this)

My main instrument is the saxophone, but I also play the piano, bass clarinet and the clarinet (self taught).

Although, I haven't picked up ANY instrument since leaving college. :( I do plan to buy a piano one day and start playing again.

CrimsonTide4 04-01-2003 01:31 PM

I remember our recorders costing $2 in 1984. How much are they now? :p

I pretty much have the same testimony. I may have been a little younger when I started playing the piano. Once upon a time, I was great, but I really wasn't interested. I wanted to dance instead of play the piano.

My parents had both my sister and I taking Violin lessons from the time we were about 3 years old. My sister was REALLY good. She even played in the UCLA orchestra in college. I HATED the violin. I didn't like all those creeses (sp?) in my fingers that the strings left. So, then I took piano lessons. I did pretty well with that - even got to play at the NAACP-ACT-SO thing. (By the way, that was a fun a$$ trip) My problem was that I hated to practice. Then I had this piano teacher that was gay and I didn't really like him that much, so if my parents weren't home and I was there and he came over for my lesson, I'd turn up the stereo so loud that it could be heard from outside and then he'd come to the door and ring the bell for about 20 minutes and leave...then I could just say "oh..so sorry...I didn't hear the door...maybe next week!!!)

I started my kids on piano lessons last year, but let them drop it after about 4 months because they had this psycho military-minded japanese teacher who was just too strict with them. They weren't having fun with it. I've started giving them lessons myself...HECK my parents spent all that money on me..I should be able to use that knowledge and give my kids the basics, 'ya know.

with the way schools are cutting back music & art programs, is this even an option?

i played the recorder in the 2nd/3rd grade then moved up the the clarinet in 5th, which i played up until my jr year in college.

AKA2D '91 04-01-2003 03:18 PM

Thanks for that lesson, teach!

LMAO!

Yep, that's the flutophone. I still have it. We learned to play it by numbers.

NOWorNEVER 04-01-2003 04:31 PM

I played the trombone from 6th to 9th grades and my brother played the trumpet. Both instruments are somewhere in the basement collecting dust.

Dedicated1 04-01-2003 04:47 PM

I played the trumpet from 6th-12th grade:cool:

Blessed1 04-01-2003 06:24 PM

-Played the flute in elementary school, picking it up again now

-Started playing the piano in elementary school and though I'm not great.... I could fake it if I had to

-Play the violin.... I've only been studying it seriously for about 2 years or so

-My main instrument is voice. I'm a voice major in school, and I auditioned about 2 weeks ago for the Washington Opera Chorus.

BLUTANG 04-01-2003 07:09 PM

i can sound decent on a saxaphone or trumpet if need be, but my principle instruments are

piano
clarinet
french horn

ladygreek 04-02-2003 12:35 PM

took lessons on piano and violin,
self-taught ukelele, guitar...

but play none of them very well :D

mela3 04-02-2003 01:59 PM

I began playing the violin in school in the sixth grade and I played all the way up through high school. I stopped when I got to college, but I am eager to start up again.

I began playing the clarinet in the eighth grade. I even played it in my high school band, but I stopped when I went to college. :(

My dad finally taught me how to play the flute when I was 16.

One of my life goals is to learn how to play the piano, but I haven't begun to attempt that feat yet.

7th through 12th - flute and piccolo

Blast from the Past - Won 3rd place in 7th grade at a Talent Show playing "Chariots of Fire" by ear.

OMG!!! i forced my parents into buying me a ukelele... the one and only time i used the "imma tell grandpa on you" it worked! (grandpa was a music teacher, so he would have been very upset thay my parents were denying 'that baby' the chance to explore new musical abilities). i never bothered to learn to play it correctly, though... :(

starang21 04-03-2003 04:58 PM

violin and piano when i was a kid, the only one i play now is the CD player.

Also used to play violin, a little guitar, and a bit of piano.

ladeia 04-09-2003 06:59 PM

I was a dork! I played the Booza and Triangle.
:D

brickhouse492 04-09-2003 08:03 PM

I played the cymbols in Howard's Marching Band. 10 lbs each and I'm petite. Tenor drum and xylophone where cool but I was such a brickhouse on the cymbols. Not like I can use this talent in a beauty pagent or anything. I've been able to share this talent with a few highschoolers in my day though.

blackcoffee 04-10-2003 06:10 PM

I played the clarinet (bass and alto). For those who don't know, the bass and alto clarinets are kind of shaped like a saxophone.

I also played the recorder.
