Favorite B Movie/Cult Flick
Building on the discussion about horror movies....
What's your favorite "B" Movie or Cult Flick (almost the same thing...someone out there can provide a good description of both, I'm sure)??? "B" Movie: Pandemonium (starring Carol Kane...here's a description from allwatchers.com): "Tom Smothers (a mounty), a horse named Bob, and Pee Wee Herman are cops searching for an escaped lunatic, prisoners are revolting at the local prison, and six teenagers are headed for cheerleader camp- not just any cheerleader camp, but the infamous one where all those cheerleaders were murdered. Sandy, Mandy, Candy, Andy, Randy, and Glen are unaware of the psycho stalking them. They're too busy cheering, playing strip poker, and having sex to realize what's going on until it's too late. Can Tom and Bob and Pee Wee catch the killer before all the cheerleaders are slaughtered? Will Candy ever get to use her diaphram? " Cult Flick: Tie between Rocky Horror (in the theater when all the drama geeks are there doing their thing) or Monty Python's The Holy Grail. "It's just a flesh wound!" |
Now and Then, it is my absolute favorite!

Sleepaway Camp
Better Off Dead :D |

Pretty in Pink (is this really a B or cult movie? I don't know!)
All Python Movies!!! Christin |
Plan Nine from Outer Space
It's an Ed Wood movie...so terrible it's hilarious. |
Omg........I have seen Pandemonium!! I never knew what it was called, but it ruled! God bless USA Up All Night! :)
My fav crazy movie is "But I'm A Cheerleader." Here is the oh-so-PC synopsis from allwatchers.com "It's about a girls parents and friends thinking she's a lezzie so they send her to a homosexual camp where she discovers she is one and falls in love with another lezzie." Well, the "homosexual camp" is like actually like a 10-step program camp to quit being a homosexual. And RuPaul is in it. Weird. |
I love RHPS and Holy Grail...all Monty Python in fact.
I've seen "But I'm a Cheerleader" and its just plain wierd. But in a good way. |
Solarbabies. I dunno how many people ever saw this movie, but it was bad acting, storyline sucked, it's brilliant.
|
Kevin Smith movies, especially Chasing Amy.
|
Uh Hum, all those are pretty darn good, HOWEVER, you don't know what a cult classic is until you have seen-
Harold & Maude Soundtrack by Cat Stevens, FANTASTIC!!! Has ANYone seen this, or have you been deprived? ;) edited- Check it out. http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/5862/harold.htm |
OK. I've been thinking about the distinction b/t a cult flick & a B movie....and here's what I've come up with (feel free to expand):
B Movie: Low budget, bad acting (or writing...sometimes one doesn't = the other), critically panned, highly entertaining. Cult Flick: Movie that has grown a fanatical following over the years...possibly not well received when first released. Characterized by viewing sessions where viewers know every line. Also, you can spot a cult movie fan on the street when they shout random phrases like "I want my Two Dollars!" or "I'm not dead yet...I got bettah." On that note, I cannot believe I did not include Sixteen Candles & Better Off Dead in my cult classics list. (JAM-thanks for the tip on Harold & Maude...I'm always up for a new one...). |
Please, PLEASE,PLEASE! let me know if you like it! It really has so much to say on so many levels.
I agree with your distinction between the two. I forgot to mention HAIRSPRAY!!! edited-I've mentioned this on GC before- Valley of the Dolls-the original one! |
JAM-
I've seen Harold & Maude! The 1st time I saw it was near the end of my sophmore year of college. I was hanging out with some friends & one of my Phi Beta sisters insisted we watch it- it was her favorite movie & none of the rest of us had seen it. We were mostly like this:      the whole time! But I don't wanna give anything away. Definately a good recommendation, though! As for my fave cult movies: Probably The Breakfast Club & most of the Monty Python films My fave B movie: The Lost Boys |
Soylent Green (SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!)
Amazon Women on the Moon <-- Funniest. Movie. Ever. My life became complete after seeing that movie. Funny story regarding bad movies...My friend Chris and his brother have this war going to see who can kill the other first only by watching the worst movies they can find. It's been going on for months. It's absolutely hilarious. You know how after E.T. came out they had that really really bad ripoff called "Mac and Me?" Well, they found the rip-off of Mac and Me, and it's truly the worst piece of cinematography. In the world. |
does the princess bride count as a "b" movie? i mean, c'mon, when dude flips around while fighting wesley, you can see the mat fly up when he lands on the "ground"......love love love this movie. and i think high fidelity is quite possibly one of the best movies ever made......don't know if it's cult or "b", but i never really heard a lot about it until one of my guy friends made me watch it....one of the best soundtracks, too.

JustAMom: Omg! I *love* Hairspray! My personal John Waters fav is Crybaby. Johnny Depp is the best. :D
Oh yeah, I forgot to add Orgazmo. I think it's the perfect blend of B-movie and cult flick specialness. :p |

So, who's seen Ishtar? The entire thing?
Christin |
My fav cult movies are any of the John Hugs films or Kevin Smith films.
I Love the Rocky Horror Picture Show. There is a movie theatre in Toronto, that plays this movie all the time. It's huge on Halloween. They play the movie and they have stage actors act along with the movie. The audience brings props with them too (ie toast, newspaper, rice, etc, etc...). It's a blast! |

(*It's all about how the women come with the house and they're called "furniture." I cried when the old man died....but what a way to die, eh?) Has anyone seen "Scotland, PA?" It's a Lot 47 version of Shakespeare's MACBETH with Maura Tierney (as Lady Macbeth...or as they put in the movie McBeth) and Andy Dick (as one of the "witches"....but in this movie they're hippie/stoners.) It's set in PA (duh) in the 70s (the ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK *almost* is BAD COMPANY and it's AWESOME lol) and surrounds itself around a fast-food place owned by a man named...you guessed it DUNCAN. McDuff is the police chief, and oh man it's histerical. I seriously recommend it to everyone! http://www.lot47.com/scotlandpa/ |
Fav B-movie: "My Best Friends A Vampire"
"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" Fav cult classic: "Clerks" |
The "Evil Dead" series is hilarous. Bruce Campbell is the man.
I know there are other B movies I love, can't think of them now though. Collin |
My Favorite B movies:
Three O' Clock High Girls Just Want To Have Fun Breakfast Club |
My three favorite B movies which are all, interestingly enough musicals. Favorite songs and tidbits are included....
1) Earth Girls Are Easy (the title song and the song " 'Cause I'm a Blonde" are hillarious). With Jim Carey and Gena Davis, you really would think this movie would have done better. The name is a LOT misleading. 2) Grease 2 ("Cool Rider", anyone?). Watching Maxwell what's his name (used to be on the Colby's) try and sing while looking very pained is a riot! 3) Girls Just Want to Have fun (Dancin' in Heaven). Stars both Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt as Catholic school girls from Chicago who've just gotta dance. |
Plan 9 from outer space.. would that even qualify for "B" movie status?
There's a movie called Ed Wood about the director. Includes a little of the background from Plan 9. Several items of interest.. but my favorite would be the simulated flying saucers -- 2 paper plates glued together and you can see the string! |
I loved ALL those Brat Pack movies! (exception...Less than Zero)
Thinking of Soylent Green-A Clockwork Orange! As far as B movies...the whole genre of monster flicks and Tokyo are pretty hard to beat especially when the lips are moving and the talking is DONE! Are these cult status or just classic? Orson Wells-War of the Worlds or The Day the Earth Stood Still How about The Bad Seed-"You better give me those shoes Leroy!" Good grief-I've seen so many movies, my head is cluttered with trivia. I'm going to check out some "newer" stuff from all your recommendations! |

That movie was really strange, especially the ending I think "The Warriors" is a good cult flick, also "Slums of Beverly Hills" |
I worked at HOllywood Video for a year, so I've seen PLENTY of those movies.
Hmm let me think.... B Movie- There were a dump load of B teen movies during my tenure that star many of today's most popular actors during their heyday. Telling You All I Wanna Do Coming Soon The Suburbans There's also many straight to video sequels like from Dusk Till Dawn that the original cast had nothing to do with, and your favorite B movie actors (Roddy Piper, Micheal Dudikoff, Richard Grieco, Ernie Hudson, now Van Damme and Steven Seagal.) There's also your occasional gangsta/ghetto/barrio B movie: Down For The Barrio Border Wars 17 & Under Thicker Than Water And then there are some HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE "horror" movies. If any of you have seen any of these, I commend you on your bravery: Asylum of Terror (THE WORST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN) Fangoria Trapped Captured The LAst Broadcast (The precursor to the Blair Witch Project, and it was actually good, better than the Blair Witch) I'll think of some more later. What's so funny is how many people on a regular basis would rent them, come back, tel me how stupied they were, THEN RENT ANOTHER JUST LIKE IT! |

How about
Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! from Russ Meyers?? |
One of my fave cult movies is "Waiting for Guffman." Absolutely HILARIOUS! If you haven't seen it, its a must-rent!!! :D

oooh...I LOVE Clockwork Orange! |
I don't consider John Hughes films "cult" or "B" films, since they all made boatloads of $$$, were promoted out the yin-yang and pretty much everyone my age saw them. The Last American Virgin or Spring Fever, now that's another story.
I will watch Soylent Green or the Omega Man anytime (although I don't think Omega Man will be on TV again till the war is over) and I also get sucked into those really bad 1950's teen movies...the ones where everyone thinks Sandra Dee is a tart just because she has enormous boobs. |
Night of the Living Dead
|
Donnie Darko
Anyone seen "Donnie Darko"? Very strange, yet interesting. After watching it I kinda stared at my tv for a minute thinking "What the hell just happened?"
|
I've mentioned this once before...
At the time it wasn't a B movie , but it was such a piece of shit that you can't imagine anyone taking it seriously. The cinematic masterpiece is... Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Anyone else seen it??? I love the part where he's driving off the cliff and you can see a behind the scenes guy pulling the roadsigns with a string... pure crappy genius. |

I gotta second the nominations for "Earth Girls Are Easy," and "Grease 2." The guy who plays Michael went on to play Sexy Rexy in "Empire Records!" "Donnie Darko" is a really good movie too . . . and Jake Gyllenhaal is yummy. I have to admit I have a hard time buying his relationship with Jena Malone, though, considering the fact that she looks about 12 and he looks like he's 22. |
