Family Trees

I was just wondering how differente GLO chapters differentiate their big/lil family trees. For example my chapter uses animals. one family of Grand bigs, bigs, and littles are the monkey family, while another group are pandas etc. I know one of the other chapters at my school uses flowers. I thought this was a fun question to ask because I'm going to find out who my big is in a week and I was thinking about what family I'll be in.:D

so what do you guys use?:)

nyrdrms 03-28-2003 01:16 AM

We have four main families....clowns, teddy bears, pigs and cows. And then sisters are allowed to add branches if they want. I'm a pig butterfly and I added monkies for my little sisters, so they are pig butterfly monkies. It can end up being quite a line though...my roommate is a clown, frog, penguin, lady bug, lion...and one of my other sisters is a cow, parrot, killer whale, monkey, sunflower, panda bear.

IheartAST129 03-28-2003 03:23 AM

In my chapter, our founding sisters started off as twins or triplets, thus creating our original families. Then, when a founder took their first lil sis, they chose a fabric pattern for their growing family, and when a new member is added to the family at initiation, they recieve their first set of letters in their family pattern. The idea behind this was when our founders came back to visit the chapter, they could pick out who was in there family by the color or pattern of the letters they were wearing.

Each of the fabrics represents a little bit of the original founding sister. One of our founders is really Irish, so her pattern in green with clovers on it. Another one of our founder is really crazy and loves leopard print, so she chose a furry leopard pattern. My family is a blue with silver sparkles on it, which might sound generic, but is absolutely perfect for my family.

We call them houses. Such as the house of cuties, or the house of the bold and the beautiful. We started the chapter with 5 houses, but two have since died out. We were thinking about starting them back up again but aren't sure about it. ..... any idea? We haven't had anyone in those families since the early '90's.

AngelPhiSig 03-28-2003 07:35 AM

We dont have anything fun like that... my Phi Sig family has leopard print letters on a black shirt as our family pattern, but that was started by me. We also have pink butt letters on grey sweats... theyre cute... again started by me and my little...

erica812 03-28-2003 09:25 AM

My chapter's families were formed like IheartAST129 described. We started with 10 founders which were divided into five pairs of twins: The Flower Family, The Angel Family (that's me!), The Leopard Family, The Butterfly Family, and The Star Family. Unfortunately, my Angel twin transferred to another school, so I am currently the only Angel. I'm hopefully going to get a Little next week, so I won't be alone anymore!

All the flowers, animals, etc. sound so cute :)

My chapter doesn't do anything like that... we're boring :) Each family is named for the founder at the "top" of the tree, e.g. "Susie's family". Some families have distinctive patterns for their letters, others don't.

Unfortunately, my little deaffiliated before getting her own little, and I'm a founder, and we didn't do the twin thing - so I have no family :(

Zephyr 03-28-2003 12:49 PM

My Chapter used mostly animals, but I was a member of the Smiley Face/Teddy Bear family, we also had a Clown Family. I don't know we did it this way; our founding sisters picked the Family mascots when we were Chartered back in 1989...

GO US AEPHIALUM!!! :) I am a proud member of TINA's family! Woo big 80's hair! (we were refounded in 1986)

shadokat 03-28-2003 02:20 PM

aephialum,

We have the same thing. I'm Kerry's family :) We're not all as creative I guess ;) Of course, I've never MET Kerry!!

chideltjen 03-28-2003 02:24 PM

We are separated by flowers and alcoholic beverages. Yes yes I know... it's kinda strange and possibly inappropriate when your family starts screaming the names of alcohol at mixers and formals. But most of them are classy drinks ;)

My fam is the Pink Champagne/Lilly family. We were at one point the Cuervo/Orchid Family. I don't know who changed the alcohol (I'm glad cuz I hate tequilla) and Orchids were just too expensive. We also have a family symbol and animal. (Shooting star and monkey.)

Other fams are:
Midori Sour/Sunflower fam. They are probably the biggest. They also have the ladybug as their symbol and a motto and other things.

Champagne/Bird of Paradise fam: They try not to dwell on the family flower much cuz it's so hard to find.

SoCo/Daffidil fam: was once the biggest fam. One of the main founders of the fam took 5 lils!

Malibu Rum/Daisy Fam: One of the smaller ones but quickly growing.

We had a goldshlager/tulip fam but one of the later members DAed and the last active member of the fam never took a twin.

We have families. Some have names, some don't. All families have traditions (some have their own history books, for example). My family is the turtles, and there is also a pig family. We name family members like My big-big-big, or my little-little. We also have cousins or aunts. For example, I have twins (two littles), so their littles will be cousins and they will be aunts to each other's littles. I have a great-aunt who had to go early alum 'cause dues went up went we got the house... She rules too, though! Also almost all families do at least a monthly dinner together. My family rawks!

Here we are at our school's Fancy Dress Ball (like a huge prom, only with an $80,000 budget):

L-R: my little, me, my other little, and my big!

LeslieAGD 03-28-2003 04:48 PM

My chapter doesn't use animals, colors, symbols, etc. We just go by different branches of the family tree.

BlondeGurl 03-28-2003 05:28 PM

My sorority has 'Family Shirts'. You design a shirt so that years down the line youknow who is in your family by what shirt they are wearing. We also have family animals. Mine is the duck. We also give our family a name. Most of the founding sisters use their greek letter initials, but my family name is DIK . Most families have other distinctive traditions that set them apart, for example some have family jewels and memory boxes etc. We really get into it!

Tom Earp 03-28-2003 05:53 PM

Is this just a Soro thing? I dont know:confused:

There have been posts on LXA about Century Brothers( The corresponding # to your #!) OOPs, if that is the case, I have 5 Centuary Brothers. Damn am getting old?

I also saw a thread that because of Family Trees there were divisions amongst that particular chaper. Infighting etc. I never could figure out why? Are they all members of the same Group!?

I worried about this and still do! Just like I was at the House and something was said you can call Zeta(Chapter #) and I asked what that was.

Well, as I had a lower Chapter # I got first dibs.

All well and good, but embaressing as no one has a lower # than me!

I feel and just hope I am equal to all of the Brothers of my Chapter and International!

Just a long thought as I sit here being a lump of knowledge HAHA!:D

Peaches-n-Cream 03-28-2003 06:00 PM

We didn't do anything like what most of you have described. The chapter website has a section for family trees. It goes back to the founding sisters of our local sorority in 1981. As a pledge, I had to memorize my family tree from the local founder to me. It wasn't that long. My big sister's big sister was still an undergrad so I had to learn three names.

We gave our little sisters nicknames at initiation. Sometimes they were related to the big sister's nickname so they had a lineage with similar nicknames.

That's actually one of the reasons Kappa uses Kores, according to one of our advisors. Kores are like the whole family system, but they're switched up semesterly. ( I beleive the VPS is one of the people responsible for the assignments.) Helps you get to know more people and prevents lineages, which can potentially be divisive. We do use Key sisters (basically bigs and littles) which I guess create a sort-of lineage. To my understanding, though, they weren't part of the Kores as it was originally planned. I recall being told they were added later because people missed the big-little thing.

Cluey 03-28-2003 06:22 PM

We had families at my college, though I was not in a sorority. They have since done away with the official family names, in an effort to get rid of some of the hazing that way going on. Now the girls say, "I'm from the parrot lineage... "

I was a junior transfer student, so I didn't get the greatest choice of families. The nice thing was, though, that the way the rules were set up, a senior could start their own family. I did just that the next year with two of my best friends who became my little sisters. We were the parrots, pretty much because we all love Jimmy Buffett and wanted to have a cool mascot.

Each family has it's own traditions, flowers, special spot on campus, signature, colors, etc. My littles and I came up with the ideas for our family, but since we've all left, no one seems to remember them. I am in the process of making a traditions pass down book for my family, since one of my friend's from college has a biological little sister in my family that I know.

Other families I remember (off the top of my head): dinosaurs, koalas, pigs, cows, funky monkeys, dead rubber chickens, lambs, butterflies, teddy bears and sharky angels.

My DG Family

Being as we have a nautical themed fraternity, most of our families are nautical themed. In the beg. we had the sailboats, the anchors, the lighthouses, the seashells, (and non-nautical) roses and hannahs. The hannah's have officially died out, which makes me sad, but it happens. The sailboats, i believe, will be the next to go, they are down to two girls. At big/lil revealing, the girls are given sailor hats decorated in family style. I'm a part of the seashell family, and we have our own traditions, such as bigs give lils their lavilier on initation morning, and other such traditions.....I don't think any family has any sort of heirloom or anything, but some of these ideas sound cute, i may have to start a tradition!

DaffodilDarling 04-09-2003 05:08 PM

We have four family trees, Driscoll, Browning, Hallinan and Sandillo.

Sandillo died out in the early '90s
Hallinan is being brought back, because we gave the last Hallinan a little from our most recent class.
Browning only has one girl now.
Driscoll has the other 7 actives.

They were named after sisters.... the main tree split into the 4 branches a long time ago. There are many branches of the Driscoll tree, along with the others.

PSK480 04-09-2003 06:38 PM

Our families are names of our drinks. Thunderbird, Rumplminze, Calico Jack, Smirnoff.

only 2 have additional names and those are Dark Side - Smirnoff and mine Thinderbird - Dave Bishop Family(named after the family founder).

Kevin 04-09-2003 06:41 PM

I have none..

I was the 5th initiated into my chapter (founding father). Took one little and even *I* ended up blackballing him.

EGDeepher 04-10-2003 10:53 AM

Our families come from our founder's last names. At one time we had 7 families, but now we only have 2, the Van Decker and Greek. I'm a Van Decker. Each tree has it's our pattern, ours is tie dye, thiers is bandanna. Each tree also has it own traditions. We also branch out. If someone has more then 1 little they get their own branch. My full liniage is Van Decker- Lalsiw-Pisano. Again each having their own pattern. It's cool but expensive. I had to buy my little 3 family shirts!

hannahgirl 04-10-2003 12:19 PM

We don't have family names in our chapter. I kinda wish we did but oh well. I have the biggest family in the chapter (there are like 6 different families) with 19 active members out of 65. The last person that I know is my Grand-Big so we start the family with her and branch out....i need to research a little more and find out if she had a twin and see if we branch into any other families by any chance.

GeorginaDG63 04-10-2003 12:29 PM

Family Trees

in my chapter, we have a wide variety of family names...our founders started off as twins...which my big sis is a twin...and then the families began from there. we are the Gem family...there is also the angel family, sun family, butterfly family, rockstar family, care bear family...i dont even remember how many other families we have...buttttt you name it...we probably have it :) im pretty sure its either the sun family or angel family thats the biggest...not too sure, but we definitely have the "grandmas" of our chapter hehe :)

White_Chocolate 04-11-2003 12:04 PM

well, we have a family names but you each start your own
We have the
Mafia. ..the biggest big/lil tree in the sorority
Shiznets. . .the smallest but growing group
my family. . .the Triumvirate. . .which our big left so it'sjust me and my two littles

That's just an example. . .
