Ooooh, Ooooh! I have one! "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire (he of the hyena-like singing voice)...
My blood's so mad, feels like coagulating (I'm kidding, I don't really know what that line is. Isn't that what it sounds like though???) |
It's the end of the world as we know it :(

TURN, TURN, TURN
Chorus: To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep. A time to build up, a time to break down A time to dance, a time to mourn A time to cast away stones A time to gather stones together. A time of war, a time of peace A time of love, a time of hate A time you may embrace A time to refrain from embracing. A time to gain, a time to lose A time to rend, a time to sew A time of love, a time of hate A time of peace. . .I swear it's not too late. Words from the book of Ecclesiastes Music and additional words by Pete Seeger (1954) |
I'm feeling quite musical today! :)
Here's one of my favorites; it's called "The Navy Hymn" Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who biddest the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy Word, Who walked on the foaming deep, And calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! O Trinity of love and power! Our family shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect us wheresoever we go; Thus evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea |
Johnnie, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run, Hear them calling you and me, ev'ry son of liberty Hurry right away, no delay, go today Make your Daddy glad to have had such a lad, Tell your sweetheart not to pine, to be proud her boy's in line Over there, over there! Send the word, send the word, over there! That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming, The drums rum-tumming ev'rywhere! So prepare, say a prayer, send the word, send the word to beware! We'll be over, we're coming over, And we won't come back 'til it's over Over There! Johnnie, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun, Johnnie show the Hun you're a son of a gun! Hoist the flag and let her fly,_ Yankee Doodle do or die Pack your little kit, show your grit, do your bit Yankees to the ranks from the towns and the tanks Make your mother proud of you and the old Red White and Blue Over there, over there,_ Send the word, send the word, over there! That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming, The drums rum-tumming ev'ry where So prepare, say a prayer, send the word, send the word to beware We'll be over, we're coming over, And we won't come back 'til it's over Over There! Lyrics and Music by George M. Cohan (1917) |
Keep the Home Fires Burning
They were summoned from the hillside, They were called in from the glen, And the Country found them ready At the stirring call for men. Let no tears add to their hardship; As the Soldiers pass along And although your heart is breaking, Make it sing this cheery song. Keep the Home fires burning, While your hearts are yearning, Though your lads are far away They dream of Home; There's a silver lining Through the dark cloud shining, Turn the dark cloud inside out, Till the boys come Home. O-ver seas there came a plead-ing "Help a Nation in distress," And we gave our glorious laddies; Honor made us do no less. For no gallant Son of Freedom To a tyrant's yoke should bend, And a noble heart must answer To the sacred call of "Friend." Keep the Home fires burning, While your hearts are yearning, Though your lads are far away They dream of Home; There's a silver lining Through the dark cloud shining, Turn the dark cloud inside out, Till the boys come Home. Now that the fighting has begun, may God have mercy and compassion for *all* of us, and please bring our men and women home safely. |
Thanks, Smiley21! I like this thread. It could be a topic for a thesis: "Seeing both sides through Music"...or something like that :)
Cream, thank you for including the lyrics to "Over There". I remember my grandmother telling me how that song was played on the radio a lot during the First World War and the words are even engraved on one side of the WWI memorial in my little hometown. A nice slice of Americana! |
So Long, Mom (A Song for World War III)
by: Tom Lehrer So long, Mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, So don't wait up for me. But while you swelter Down there in your shelter, You can see me On your TV. While we're attacking frontally, Watch Brinkally and Huntally, Describing contrapuntally The cities we have lost. No need for you to miss a minute Of the agonizing holocaust. (Yeah!) Little Johnny Jones he was a U.S. pilot, And no shrinking vi'let was he. He was mighty proud when World War Three was declared, He wasn't scared, No siree! And this is what he said on His way to Armageddon: So long, Mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, So don't wait up for me. But though I may roam, I'll come back to my home, Although it may be A pile of debris. Remember, Mommy, I'm off to get a commie, So send me a salami, And try to smile somehow. I'll look for you when the war is over, An hour and a half from now! |

battle zones a single light bulb on a single thread for the black sirens wail history fails rose-colored glass begins to age and crack while the politicians shadowbox the power ring in an endless split decision never solve anything from a neighbor's distant land i heard the strain of the common man let it be me (this is not a fighting song) let it be me (not a wrong for a wrong) let it be me if the world is night shine my life like a light well the world seems spent and the president has no good idea of who the masses are well i'm one of them and i'm among friends we're trying to see beyond the fences in our own backyards i've seen the kingdoms blow like ashes in the winds of change but the power of truth is the fuel for the flame so the darker the ages get there's a stronger beacon yet let it be me (this is not a fighting song) let it be me (not a wrong for a wrong) let it be me if the world is night shine my life like a light in the kind word you speak in the turn of the cheek when your vision stays clear in the face of your fear then you see turning out a light switch is their only power when we stand like spotlights in a mighty tower all for one and one for all then we sing the common call let it be me (this is not a fighting song) let it be me (not a wrong for a wrong) let it be me if the world is night shine my life like a light words and music by emily saliers |

The Last Stop Fire The sun is well asleep Moon is high above Fire grows from the east How is this Hate so deep Lead us all so blindly killing killing Fools we are If hate's the gate to peace This is the last stop For raining tears War The only way to Peace I don't fall for that Raining tears You're righteous so righteous You're always so right Go ahead and dream Go ahead believe that you are the chosen one Raining tears Oh no Gracious even God Bloodied the cross Your sins are washed enough Mother's cry Is hate so deep Must a baby's bones This hungry fire feed As smoke clouds roll in The symphony of death This is the last stop Scream Right is wrong now Shut up you big lie This black and white lie You comb your hair to hide Your lying eyes You're righteous, so righteous You're always so right But why your lie Go ahead and dream Go ahead believe that you are the chosen one This is the last stop Here there's more than is showing up Hope that we can break it down It's not so black and white You're righteous You're righteous You're righteous You're always so right There you are nailing a good tree Then say forgive me, forgive me Why Raining tears This is the last stop Here there is more than is showing up Hope that we can break it down It's not so black and white |

While Vietnam is long over, I feel the song still works...
The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag Gimme an F! F! Gimme an I! I! Gimme an S! S! Gimme an H! H! What's that spell ? FISH! What's that spell ? FISH! What's that spell ? FISH! Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again. He's got himself in a terrible jam Way down yonder in Vietnam So put down your books and pick up a gun, We're gonna have a whole lotta fun. And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam; And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Well, come on generals, let's move fast; Your big chance has come at last. Gotta go out and get those reds — The only good commie is the one who's dead And you know that peace can only be won When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come. And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam; And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Huh! Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow, Why man, this is war au-go-go. There's plenty good money to be made By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade, Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb, They drop it on the Viet Cong. And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam. And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Well, come on mothers throughout the land, Pack your boys off to Vietnam. Come on fathers, don't hesitate, Send 'em off before it's too late. Be the first one on your block To have your boy come home in a box. And it's one, two, three What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam. And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. |

disclaimer: I know this is tasteless. but then of course I have a thing for the more dry tasteless humor of life. so,if you find this offensive then that's your right under free speech much as me saying this is my right under the first amendment.
to go along with bombs over baghdad has anyone else heard of the military/civilian plan to open up the largest glass factory in the world. I heard it was going to be called Iraq. |
