Over rated band/perfomer

Who do you think is the most over rated perfomer or band is?

Babra Streisand. Who in the right mind would play $300 to see her sit down and sing with not even cool lighting?

Kevin 03-16-2003 10:36 AM

So hard to decide on the MOST overrated. Just about any pop act of the last few years has been highly overrated. Maybe the Spice Girls? O Town? Brittney, Christina?

So many great choices for this one...

CarolinaCutie 03-16-2003 10:57 AM

This year I've been feeling like Avril is the most overrated thing I've ever seen...

She is not punk. She is a little girl who wears ties and black eyeliner. Before her record deal, she didn't even LISTEN to punk music. I read in the new Vogue that she doesn't even know who Guns and Roses is... (not that they are punk, but it's still fairly appalling).

I will be glad when she goes away. She kinda sucks.

I might be in the minority here, but sometimes I feel like DMB is a little overrated too. They are good, I like many of their songs... but some people are obsessed and I am not feeling it.

xok85xo 03-16-2003 11:02 AM

ditto on avril..it takes 4 people to write her crappy songs..seriously, why?!

nelly. cmon now..HE RAPS ABOUT SHOES.

50 cent. 'birfday" ..'gimme a hug'

honestly..what are people seeing in this crap?

moe.ron 03-16-2003 11:11 AM

agree with Avril. She's cute, but so are the Atomic Kitten. Doesn't mean I'm going to buy the cds. I herd she sucked live anyway.

DMB is alright, they used to be great before the little girls screaming "Space Between, Crash, and Dave I Love You!" Ruin the scene. On a side note, first time I saw DMB was when they open for Phish. That was when they still jammed.

I TOTALLY AGREE. THX!

PM_Mama00 03-16-2003 11:58 AM

Ohhhh what's her name that won ALL those Grammy's/Emmy's whatever they were. The one I was complaining about before.... the one with only one single out? Yeah she's definately overrated.

Norah Jones?

PM_Mama00 03-16-2003 12:08 PM

Yeah.... way overrated.

Rio_Kohitsuji 03-16-2003 02:38 PM

Ditto on the Avril...I mean, I like her songs, but my gawd, she's -not- punk.

Britney Spears- oye.

Eminem/Slim Shady/whateverthef*uckheis- C'mon, you suck, even -you- said your singles are cheesy!

New Found Glory- Once again, sounds like every other 'punk' band out now.

...and any other hip-hop/rap newbie- they all sound the same and have the same dag on beat in the background

Basically, these ppl are -entertainers- not artists or musicians. (w/the exception of NFG, they can at least play guitar )

DigitalAngel126 03-16-2003 02:44 PM

Totally agree with Norah, Avril, and DMB.....also britney, xtina... Little sick of J. Lo....P. Diddy - - Who exactly does he think he is?? P-resident??? I'm thinkin not....He bugs me. AND MARIAH!! GO AWAY!

KillarneyRose 03-16-2003 02:59 PM

I feel so bad saying this because from what I understand she is a very nice person, but Shania Twain is very over rated. All of her songs sound basically the same to me.

Also, the members of that whole "whining women" genre from a few years back: Alannis Morisette, Joan Osborne, Lisa Loeb, etc. But their 15 minutes is long over anyway.

PS Speaking of Avril...the music reviewer in my city's newspaper described her as a "punk goddess with the voice of an angel and the looks of a supermodel" I personally like her but that 's going a bit overboard

You hit the nail right on the head.

Let's see:

Avril Lavigne
Norah Jones
Britney
Christina
Interchangeable Boy Bands

I absolutly LOATHE

Nelly - COMPLETE interchangable beats and songs
P. Diddy - Ever heard of ORIGINALITY? I don't care if you "just wanna make everyone dance". Do it with your own beats that YOU created.
NAS
Jay-Z
Big Tymers - Except Still Fly

I don't mean to "hate", but two things here:

1) NAS is now sampling Fur Elize. I remember when Coolio sampled Pachebel Cannon. Then someone sampled Symphony 88. I swear, does ANYONE Besides Dr. Dre (and that's stretching it) know how to create their own music? MOst people are going to hear Fur Elize4 or Pachebel Cannon and say "Hey, they took that "beat" from NAS and Coolio!"

2) Why is every new rapper and every new rap song have to do with expensive cars, clothes, teeth, shoes, and flossing your shit? We get the point, you have money and you like pissing it away on superficial things. We still listen to Early 90s Death Row and 99-Current Dre and Em because they're about something besides that, ANYTHING besides that.

I know almost every rap listener knows the lyrics to Nothing But A G Thang and all the songs on Doggy Style. In a couple monthes, you're not gonna be hearing Wanksta anymore.

chideltjen 03-16-2003 03:28 PM

what is with the current hip hop trend of artists not being able to spell correctly?

Ex:
it's gettin hot in 'heeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr'
it's your 'birfday'
;)

i'll agree with the avril thing... she can't even sing live. i saw her on the grammys... blah...

Anyone heard of "Zwan?" It's Billy Corgan's new band ( think Smashing Pumpkins). The pumpkins fired their drummer back in the 90s, their guitarist took a solo (crappy) career, the bassist quit and they broke up. You would think with that many issues they would just call it quits... but NOOOOOO. Now the drummer is back, they changed the name and they just don't have it anymore. Give it a rest Billy! You look better with hair!

MeLikey 03-16-2003 03:31 PM

Jennifer Love Hewitt... just stick to acting...

Hoku-- all I remember is that she had that stupid single out, something about being a blonde I think... and she kept performing the song on a bunch of shows...

Faith Hill-- I like some of her songs, but there's nothing special about her... her voice isn't distinctive, but she has the look so...

I agree about Norah Jones...

DeltaSigStan 03-16-2003 04:01 PM

She can't even do THAT well. I think she should model so we wouldn't have to hear that annoying voice, kinda like how Anna K Should just model so she doesnt stink up the Tennis Courts

gphiangel624 03-16-2003 04:03 PM

Quoted from MeLikey: Faith Hill-- I like some of her songs, but there's nothing special about her... her voice isn't distinctive, but she has the look so...

I so agree... I love country, and some of her songs are good, but they're all starting to sound the same. Her husband (Tim McGraw) is getting a little boring, too. And why do people think he's hot??? He's balding!

Quoted from DeltaSigStan: 1) NAS is now sampling Fur Elize. I remember when Coolio sampled Pachebel Cannon. Then someone sampled Symphony 88. I agree again. It bugs the crap out of me when some new, pop band/artist (or even if they aren't new) samples off something a little old, even classic, and then all these young people, some even college-aged, are like, "wow have you heard that new Eminem song? It's so original!" (Hi, um, that was sampled off of Aerosmith's Dream On...). The most annoying one: my chapter used the tune of "I love Rock and Roll" for our Open House song at recruitment this year... a lot of my sisters didn't know that Britney DIDN'T write that song! I had to explain that it was Joan Jett. They were in complete shock. I love my sisters, but their love for crappy pop music is just a downer...

In general, I agree with just about everyone else. I like Avril's music, but I know her image is just annoying. I can't wait till Britney, Christina, Mariah, and ALL boy bands fall off the face of the earth. It happened to N'Sync, it happened to the Backstreet Boys, it happened to 98 degrees, and let's not forget about New Kids on the Block... I know we all thought they'd last forever, but seriously... how much can someone take of the same old love ballads??? Justin Timberlake needs to drop off, too (I know I'll get attacked by that one, but he looks like a child molester to me).

On a side note, I've herd that Joan Osborne has been relagated to singing back up vocal for The Dead on their upcomming tour.

nas is overrated? do you even know anything about hip hop? off pure lyrical skill, he can smoke most MC's without even batting an eyelash. dr. dre being the only original producer? look at Dj premier, look at the alchemist, look at the REAL hip hop producers. they're not the ones who get the MTV airplay, which seems to be what folks base their opinion on hip hop trends. if folks would actually listen to what is being said in hip hop music vs. focusing on the beat, then people would know more. until then, don't even disrespect nasty nas.

DeltaSigStan 03-16-2003 05:26 PM

Well,

1) I think he's overrated. He has a couple good songs, but that's it.

2) I was focusing mainly on the fact that he had to sample Fur Elize

And, didn't I just say I'm tired of the lyrics rapped about these days? That would constitute "if folks would actually listen to what is being said in hip hop music "

You automaticaly think people know NOTHING about the subject at hand, we're just giving opinions, and since I do listen to rap and Hip Hop, I think I know a LITTLE bit at least.

have you listened to what the song "I can" is about? same way with "one mic." sure sounds like someone's trying to show out. listen to gangstarr, nothing they say is about ice, same with mos and kweli. as well as common sense or the roots. the state of hip hop music isn't based solely on the early 90's death row music. they got their influence from the poineers of hip hop.

See, that's the problem I have with "I Can" I like the message and the lyrics, but it just irks me that he had to sample Beethoven.

Well, I didn't EVERY rapper these days raps about ice and flossing, but there is a significant amount.

folks have been sampling in hip hop since the beginning. the old Dj's didn't have records of ish they made up, it was of popular music at the time. then they freaked it a little, had an MC flow over the beat. you listen to most of the hip hop songs out there, most have some sort of sampling in it. hip hop doesn'ts stop with the production board. becuase even dre has produced a garbage beat.

DeltaSigStan 03-16-2003 05:38 PM

Yeah, but classical music?

yeah, all the great producers have done it. i've heard the debeers (the diamond folks) have their stuff on a song...shoot i've heard someone rhyme over a final fantasy beat..you'd be surprised where people come up with this stuff. and both of those joints were hot.

DeltaSigStan 03-16-2003 05:46 PM

Well, sooner or later they'll be nothing left to sample........can't wait to see Sean sample mary had a little lamb and the big tymers sampls twinkle twinkle little star.

P-Diddy does not samle, he ruin songs. On a side note, check out spearhead and the roots. great great great music. I still remmember when I first saw Public Enemy in 92. They toured with Anthrax, Primus and I belive Digible Planet. That had to be one of the best concert i have ever seen. But PE just blew everybody out of the show. Then the encore had PE and Anthrax doing some nasty (explicit) and I went home bleeding and in pain and very very happy. I was only 16 years old.

LeslieAGD 03-16-2003 06:11 PM

DMB...bleh

XOMichelle 03-16-2003 06:32 PM

I like Norah Jones!
I think it's less the problem with the music and more with the advertising. Do I need to be bombarded every 15 seconds with more hype?

OK - we've de-railed the thread, see the new hiphop thread I'm throwing up here in a second.

John Mayer is the most overrated in the US right now - a great classical guitarist, but he writes songs that make even my candy ass sick.

FiReKraCkEr 03-16-2003 06:57 PM

I have to agree with a lot of you guys...

Britney Spears
Eminem
New Found Glory
Avril LaVigne
Norah Jones
Cher

BTW, John Mayer is awesome!

AchtungBaby80 03-16-2003 07:07 PM

John Mayer...yeah, I think he's a little overrated. One of my sorority sisters met him a while back, and she said his personality didn't exactly sparkle, which might explain why he sounds so uninspired most of the time. Just my opinion--don't yell at me! :D

Dionysus 03-16-2003 07:32 PM

Britney
Avril
DMB
Christina
Ashanti
Ja Rule

Justin Timberlake (he's not all that)

CarolinaCutie 03-16-2003 11:30 PM

KillarneyRose, I also hate the whining women... which reminds me, I also detest Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan! Most annoying voices on the planet... I've heard that Tori writes moving lyrics but my ears can't listen long enough to find out.

And I have to respectfully disagree with some of the people on this thread...

Justin Timberlake is most DEFINITELY all that. :p

Nas' new song with Beethoven in the background is awesome... I think sampling is DEFINITELY overdone, but this is not an example.

smiley21 03-16-2003 11:36 PM

avril and 50 cent by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

xo_kathy 03-17-2003 11:33 AM

I have said it a million times and I will say it again (and I am appalled that there is only one mention thus far in the thread!)

Jennifer Lopez is a digrace to artists everywhere!!! Blech!

She is NOT a good dancer (trust me on this one folks, I have a degree in the stuff!)

She is NOT a good singer.

And while she is not the world's worst actor, she is only capable of a cheesy romantic comedy once in a while.

Suffice it to say, I think she stinks.

Nikki_DZ 03-17-2003 11:43 AM

IMHO...

Dixie Chicks-NOTHING to do with their political stances, I just get sick of hearing them on every radio station (pop, rock, country) when I get into the car.

Avril-Quit flicking off the camera, sweetie. No one is buying the hard as nails routine.

JaRule-You sound like a 90 year old man who smokes 4 packs a day. Please quit showing up on every frickin rap song.

Audioslave-The Rage guys rule. Chris Cornell sucks.

J. Lo-Go far, far away.

P. Diddy-Ditto. Would anyone miss him and Ms. Lopez if they were stranded on a desert island?
