St Patricks Day

Okay, I'm from a line of Scot-Irish
I have the last names of McDonald-Doran-Spencer-Fincher in my family lines. . .

So, why am I the only person who isn't celebrating St Patrick's Day tonight but on MONDAY when St Patrick's Day is?

Kevin 03-15-2003 08:09 PM

Celebrate both days.

CC1GC 03-15-2003 08:38 PM

St.patty's is huge on monday, everyone starts drinking around 12. By 6, all the pubs & bars are full...i gotta work all this weekend and next week, so no green beer for me

DeltaBetaBaby 03-15-2003 08:48 PM

Usually we are on break over St. Patrick's Day, so the bars here have invented "UnOFfIcial St. Pat's" where they open at 8:00am and serve Green beer. Of course this year, we are in school for both days!

The funnier part is that unofficial always falls on the same day as the Engineering Open House, so the campus is crowded with a) drunk college kids and b) elementary schoolers learning about science.

carnation 03-15-2003 09:42 PM

Every St. Patrick's Day I hand out "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" buttons to my Mexican ESOL students to wear on their restaurant jobs. Hehe.

Tom Earp 03-15-2003 10:49 PM

Well Ye Heathesn of everybody is Irish on St. Patricks Day!

But, Kansas City ha the 1-2-3 largest St. Paddies Day Parade

Today is Snake SAt. parade along with a pre- St Paddies day in Brookside! Two different Parades the same day! Both are well atended!

Mon. is the St Paddies day In KC! It used to be on the weekend but got so big, so fun, so boustrious that the PC was to do it on the day of the Festival! Cut down the drinking, Yea Right!;)

It was the largest until NY< NY got pissed and said NO< WE HAVE THE LARGEST IRISH!

I need a chorus of Screw NY , sing it to the heavens! Sorry To all GC NYers, you are different! Your are semi normal!:D

KSigkid 03-15-2003 10:57 PM

I'm 1/4 Irish, but not sure when I'll be able to celebrate - I'm working 8-6 on Monday and have class from 9-6 on Tuesday, so not sure when I'll have the time...but I'll probably squeeze in some green beer.

josie 03-16-2003 11:56 AM

i'm scandinavian, but um, i'm still going to celebrate st patrick's day!

DeltAlum 03-16-2003 12:25 PM

When I was in college St. Pats was HUGE! We were on semesters at the time, and the big schools around us (Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State) had different Spring Breaks from us -- Generally starting on St. Pats' weekend. So, on their way to Florida, hundreds of them stopped in Athens on Friday and Saturday nights.

Unfortunately, the party generally turned into riots.

I have often suspected that one of the reasons Ohio University changed to the quarter system was to move Spring Break to cover St. Pattys weekend.

Now, the huge party is on Halloween.

Part II

Just in case you don't drink enough Monday, sundown M-sundown T marks a Jewish drinking holiday known as Purim. In fact, you are supposed to drink until you can't tell your right hand from your left.

Two excuses to get wasted... I'm sensing an impending mass conversion to Judaism among the GC'ers :D

Staying home this year. Already got the Guinness and the Irish whiskey :)

gphiangel624 03-16-2003 03:52 PM

I'm about 1/3 Irish and LOVE St. Patrick's Day... this is the first year where I can (legally) go out and drink, but NOOOOO.... I HAVE A FINAL FROM 7-10 PM ON MONDAY!!!! I'm so angry about that! Oh well, maybe all of us who have that final will go out after and celebrate... it's a horrible class and I can't wait to get it over with!

sigtau305 03-16-2003 05:28 PM

I have to work that day:( , but I'll be out and about when I hit the bars in downtown cleveland.

Great grandfather O'****** had jungle fever.

sugar and spice 03-16-2003 07:15 PM

Unfortunately we're on break for both St. Patrick's Day and Purim (we celebrated both last year) and almost nobody's here! . . . but we got an early start on St. Patrick's Day (had a green beer party last weekend) and we'll celebrate both again once everybody's back from break.

Unregistered- 03-16-2003 07:29 PM

I'm not Irish at all, but we're probably celebrating tonight and tomorrow.

The 'almost' BF's company is co-sponsoring the big block party downtown so I'll probably head down to that. It should be a good time.

MooseGirl 03-16-2003 07:38 PM

People don't celebrate St. Patrick's here! In fact, on friday, I was doing activities with my students for St. Paddy's and only 2 out of 65 students had ever heard of it!!!!

So i'll be wearing green tomorrow, but as for the drinking...i don't think so....don't know if the bars in this little town are even open Monday nights!!!

DITTO!!!! This little Irish girl can't wait to get her hands on some Guiness, but it won't be until after chapter  We'll just have to carpool over to the pub after the meeting for a sisterly celebration of the best holiday to come out of Ireland!

Erin Go Bragh!
Shannon Keefe (can I get anymore Irish?) :D

That's probably because you live in Quebec. I'm pretty sure they're not too fond of the Irish, probably equating them with the English. Which of course and Irishman (or woman) will tell you is wrong.

Anyway, Happy St. Patricks day, this mix of multiple ethnic backgrounds will be celebrating.

P.S you can kiss me because I'm Irish :)

XOMichelle 03-17-2003 01:20 AM

I have finals, no St. Patty's day for me.

AOX81 03-17-2003 08:59 AM

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!!

Hey, I was on a conversion kick but I don't have time right now to take the classes. . .
I went to Temple on Saturday though because of Purim. . .

White_Chocolate 03-17-2003 10:30 AM

Hmmm. . .kind of goes hand in hand with NON-HISPANICS celebrating Cinco De Mayo like they are friggin' Mexicans. . .

???

greeklawgirl 03-17-2003 12:53 PM

Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone! I married into a wonderful Irish family and I'm proud to be wearing my claddaghs. :)

Off topic, but St. Patrick's Day has never been crazy around our home--all of my husband's family gets together for a big dinner and drinks instead. My in-laws (both born in Ireland) keep telling us that it is a holy day. Most people in Ireland go to church! All the hoopla around St. Patrick's Day is a mostly American invention--as is corned beef and cabbage (which I was very sad to discover!).

All that having been said, I will still be enjoying my Guinness after work today! :)

White_Chocolate 03-17-2003 02:14 PM

they are handing out neon green shirts downtown
it's kind of funny

Peaches-n-Cream 03-17-2003 02:38 PM

I have marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in NYC on Fifth Ave. Not this year. In the past, I marched with the First Lady at the time now Senator Hillary Clinton. The crowd booed. :( This year I will attend a black tie St. Patrick's Day event in a posh hotel with some Irish and Irish American VIPS. I am looking for a green dress.

Here are the Irish last names in my family tree: Ryan, Kennedy, Tobin, Sullivan, Fitzgerald, and Malone.
:D

LeslieAGD 03-17-2003 06:31 PM

Happy St. Patty's Day, GCers! :)

KSigkid 03-17-2003 09:39 PM

I'm going down to a local bar for a beer - I have too much work and not enough money to really go out tonight.

St. Patrick's day is HUGE in Boston...guess I'll just have to partake next year.

bucutie02 03-17-2003 10:31 PM

I've never celebrated St. Patrick's Day like most of you out there! Too bad I have a make-up exam tomorrow to study for tonight!

Off topic but who is ALREADY taking final exams?!?!?! Are ya'll on the quarter system?

DeltaSigStan 03-17-2003 11:02 PM

It's 7 O'clock, and I'm pretty drunk.......and I'm wearing my Irish Rugby shirt...yehyaaaaaaa

Tom Earp 03-17-2003 11:22 PM

I don't think anyone would be able to understand that if they were sober.
