Would you rush/pledge any of the Sorority/Fraternity Life GLOs?

Random question:

If you had the opportunity to join one of the Sorority Life or Fraternity Life GLOs (i.e. you were enrolled in the appropriate school at the appropriate time, you met their GPA and other requirements, and you were not otherwise affiliated) .....

1. Would you rush?
2. If so, would you rush:
(a) before the MTV semester, so as to be a brother/sister during filming?
(b) during the MTV semester, knowing you'd be on national TV?
(c) after the MTV semester, after things quieted down a bit?
3. If you pledged during the MTV semester, would you want to live in the pledge house?

(Apologies if this has already come up. I hope the topic of this thread is sufficiently different from those of the pre-existing threads; I've skimmed them and I don't think this angle has been discussed much, if at all...)

AngelPhiSig 03-12-2003 08:18 PM

I had seen the SAEP sorority before the show through BetaRose's page (I LOVE MY SISTER!) and they seemed like a really nice group of girls. I also think the DZO's are a good group... we have to blame MTV for some of the bad editing.

I think it would be cool to be a pledge during the filming... The filming part would be cool... Ive always had a secret wish to be on Real World... so its kinda like that... I would live in the pledge house too... but... I would make sure I wasnt stupid.

Being a sister and having the camras on could be bad... you wouldnt want to majory screw up and have the world see... as a pledge, you do what youre told...

MoxieGrrl 03-12-2003 08:19 PM

1. Yes, at UB, I would.
2.a.Yes, I would pledge DZO before filming.
b.I don't think I would during. Being on TV freaks me out.
c.Definitely after MTV was gone and the hoopla died off.
3. If there was no filming, I would live in a pledge house.

aephi alum 03-12-2003 08:21 PM

I should answer my own question... :)

Yes, I would rush Sigma-AEPi or DZO.

I would have rushed either before, during, or after filming - making my decision based on when it was "right" for me to go through rush. Although, I must admit the idea of a camera in my face is a little intimidating :)

NO WAY would I want to live in the pledge house! Occasional air time is fine, but I value my privacy a little too much to have a camera following me 24/7 :)

MereMere21 03-12-2003 08:35 PM

I used to want to be on Real World, then Primetime came to my hospital area and started filming about heart transplant babies and after seeing that on national television I realized that reliving that was NOT fun! its weird.....that and people that you haven't talked to in years get a hold of you and you remembered why you haven't talked to them...

anyway

yes I would rush

SAEPi and DZO, I'm not sure I couldn't tell unless I actually met them

no not while the cameras were there

I would live in the house simply because its a wonderful experience to live amongst your sisters!

KSigkid 03-12-2003 09:03 PM

Would I rush the fraternity on Fraternity Life - depends, I'd have to meet the guys and all, chances are I would have rushed a fraternity anyways (I wanted to rush when I got to school), so I guess the Fraternity Life GLO would stand as good a chance as anyone.

However...I don't think I'd be comfortable with the whole MTV thing. I wouldn't want my pledging experience, and my first experiences with the fraternity to be broadcast all over the world - it's a big deal, and I'd rather it have been more private.

Kevin 03-12-2003 11:04 PM

I joined the Sigma Nu colony under pretty unique circumstances. I don't think I would have ever gone through "rush" so no.

BSUPhiSig'92 03-12-2003 11:48 PM

After seeing the episodes so far...HELL NO!!!

...and if I were Greek Advisor at Buffalo we would be having Exec Board Line Ups in my office first thing tomorrow morning!

"Can you recite the University Hazing Code Maggots?"

"Sir! No Sir!"

What a bunch of losers.

Re: Would you rush/pledge any of the Sorority/Fraternity Life GLOs?

1. I wouldn't have rushed Sigma, because I wouldn't fit in. They appear to be a great organization, but just not for me. I don't know about DZO. Guess it depends (great answer, huh?!)

2. I would not have rushed during the MTV semester. If I hadn't already rushed before, I would have considered it after everything had settled down.

3. No, I wouldn't want to live in a pledge house. Sure, I'd live in the sorority house or in the dorms with a bunch of other pledges and/or members.

I'm with you BSUPhiSig'92. These people are too rude!

adduncan 03-13-2003 12:26 AM

Hell, no!

The best I can be on this topic is "objective" (not having gone thru collegiate pledging personally) but there's a couple of points I've pondered.....

Pledging a group is a major growth experience on a very steep learning curve. It is *already* uncomfortable adjusting yourself to a group, and the group adjusting to you. Case in point: the issues that came up in tonite's episodes. Who on God's green earth wants cameras pointed in every direction during that time? (OK, the people who sign a contract w/ MTV, but you see my point....) Anyone who brings a TV camera into my bedroom while I'm asleep is asking for a permanent limp.

Also (again approaching from an AI perspective) I personally feel more comfortable w/ an organization that has a more structured network than a small local, that doesn't have any oversight or risk management. No disrespect to the locals out there, just my particular preference. If I got bawled out for something I didn't do, minor or not, I'd put gloves in my back pockets so they'd wave "bye bye" as I walked out the door.

My SIL and her husband are living w/ us for the next few months. They were shaking their heads in disbelief as long-term GLO alumni themselves.

MTSUGURL 03-13-2003 12:35 AM

I might rush for Sigma, but not DZO. I thought the Sigma sisters seemed level headed. I would not want to rush while MTV was there, preferably before they came. I don't think the DZOs have been portrayed as especially nice girls, (personality wise), and I think there was more of an emphasis on sisterhood rather than partying with the Sigma sisters.

Dionysus 03-13-2003 12:35 AM

I would rush either SXO or DZO. The pledging process would be a pain...but the fun part would be becoming an ACTIVE and giving the next pledge class crap. I would have a field day.

I would rush when MTV is filming it. I want my fame.

KillarneyRose 03-13-2003 10:44 AM

I wouldn't want to rush either of them. I have nothing against locals; I'm certain there are many fine ones out there, but I like the idea of being part of a national group. To me, that was part of the allure of joining a sorority.

sigmagrrl 03-13-2003 11:37 AM

I'd have to agree with Killarney. We were a local that became a National and I would only want to be National now...so neither. BUT, if I had to choose (gun to my head), DXiO

xok85xo 03-13-2003 11:48 AM

I too have to agree that part of the allure of being in a sorority is the fact that you share a bond with thousands of women worldwide..however, if the situation arose where i had to choose between pledging DZO and SigmaAEPI..i would pledge sigma all the way..after seeing the way DZO treats their pledges/how their pledge program is run, theres no way in hell you could pay me enough to be treated so poorly in hopes that one day i would be deemed worthy enough to be considered their sister and/or friends. f that.

Opie25 03-13-2003 01:00 PM

I would have to say a big NO . Especially with the way this seson is turning out....I would like to think that I have a little more self respect for myself and wouldn't go through all that crap and all the hoops that DZO and SCO are making their pledges jump through. I personally don't think that being a brother or sister is necessarily proved by putting up with a bunch of BS as a pledge/new member...it is proven as you continue your involvment in the organziation and grow as a person. Plus having cameras follow me arouhnd constantly....no way.

Zephyr 03-13-2003 01:06 PM

This is just me...but I wouldn't join a local. I like being a member of a National organization, I think Nationals tend to be better organized, and I like having Sisters all over the country. That said...I would join Sigma. The DZO girls seem like my friends, but I don't really like the sorority itself! Sigma seemed more concerned with sisterhood...DZO seems more concerned with making the 'pledges respect them.' Granted it's only been a few episodes but geez! The DZO girls get offended by Post-Its...I don't have friends that easily offended! :) I would join while MTV was there. I'm a glutton for my 15 minutes of fame...

I don't think so. I've always been a little particular when it came to being in a sorority. I was NPC/NPHC-bound. I just had to find my group.

astroAPhi 03-13-2003 05:09 PM

I don't think I would have joined during the filming. I'm very big on my privacy and I would go nuts if I had to ask permission to turn out the lights, etc. in my "home".

I would have only rushed DZO or SAEPi if I felt they were a group I would have fit in with. I would have probably checked them all out, but as for coming back... we'd have to see.

I can say that if I had ever been hazed, I would have walked out in a second. I didn't join so some little Suzy Priss could have a power trip.

cash78mere 03-13-2003 05:15 PM

i would not have joined either. first of all, i only wanted to join a national. for saepi, i would have felt uncomfortable since i'm not jewish and they made such a big deal of it in the first episode. i would have felt out of place.

as for dzo, if anyone ever called me at 1am to go somewhere i would have cursed them out, let alone try to join their group.

Off topic, I agree. If you are calling me at 1 in the morning, you'd better be having a serious emergency.

I would not have rushed either SAEPi or DZO, because I wanted to join a national organization.

i am laughing hysterically!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i would have pledged sigma. honestly, they had their issues, but show me a chapter that doesn't. i don't think i would have joined in the semester that mtv was filming and i know i wouldn't have lived in the pledge house. i would be miserable with a camera following me around all of the time!!!

as far as dzo....there is no "rush wardrobe" good enough to get me to pledge that group! i will not tolerate hazing. i would have walked right out after they told me that i had to carry my pledge book everywhere and that they could steal it.....lol....kiss my bum!!!

pinkyphimu 03-13-2003 08:45 PM

a twist to this survey

if your child called you and told you that they were going to be pledging a group that was being filmed by mtv, would you let them do it? it doesn't have anything to do with what particular group they would be pledging, but about doing it on mtv?

my answer- nope.

XOMichelle 03-17-2003 01:54 AM

After seeing a bit of what each sorority is about, I would rush Sigma, and not DXiO (why do they use Z? Z is for Zeta. It's Xi!) The post-it thing was really wierd.

1. Would you rush?
Not sure if I would have rushed or not. If I did rush it would only have been with SAEPi. I would have walked out of DZO the first time they tried anything close to hazing with me. why would I want to join an organization that is essentially putting me through h--l then saying the want to be my sisters and friends. I don't think so. At SAEPi most of the drama was just the new members creating drama among themselves.

2. If so, would you rush:
(a) before the MTV semester, so as to be a brother/sister during filming?
(b) during the MTV semester, knowing you'd be on national TV?
(c) after the MTV semester, after things quieted down a bit? After things had quieted down a bit would be best

3. If you pledged during the MTV semester, would you want to live in the pledge house?
Maybe.

4. Would I let my child pledge during MTV filming?
I would strongly discourage them doing it but I would have trust in how I had brought them up and let them make their own mind up. Then I'd let them know I'm there to pick up the pieces after its all over if they did decide to join.

sugar and spice 03-17-2003 03:17 AM

1. Would you rush?
I definitely would not rush DZO. I might rush SAEPi, but I'm not sure -- I would definitely have to get to know them better first. I'm not sure I would have fit in with their group. But if I had gone through rush and decided I liked them, I would have pledged.

2. If so, would you rush:
(a) before the MTV semester, so as to be a brother/sister during filming?
(b) during the MTV semester, knowing you'd be on national TV?
(c) after the MTV semester, after things quieted down a bit?
I would have done any of the three.

3. If you pledged during the MTV semester, would you want to live in the pledge house?
No.

4. Would I let my child pledge during MTV filming?
It's not my choice. If they're over 18, they're old enough to start making their own decisions.
