I can't believe no one's mentioned Freedom Bikinis!

And *lol* @ Freedom Canadians. I've gotta tell my DH that one.

Munchkin03 03-13-2003 01:58 AM

Freedom food for thought...

With Sparkling Freedom (not champagne)
And Patriot Bread (not Au Bon Pain)
We spit out all that beaujolais
To celebrate the U.S.A.

In our Americanized edition
Voilà 's lost to the magician
Fries are "freedom," never French
Chaise longue becomes "American Bench"

Our women never put on rouge
Our winter sports eschew the luge
Our soldiers never camouflage
Our hospitals must not triage

Amid the buzz of language saws
We toss the salad called Niçoise;
We'd not have any strength to boast
From breakfast croissants and French toast

Movies lose their mis-en-scenes
Bakers burn their madeleines
Omelet's flip-side? U. S. eggs!
American Hose replaces L'Eggs.

We see through all those negligees
That Frenchify the U.S. phrase
A peignoir called a Freedom Shirt
Sounds better (if a trifle curt)

French kiss? Man, there ain't no way,
We're kissin' for the U.S.A.!
(In fact, with limp-wrist circumflex,
Why don't we just get rid of sêx?)

Then extirpate the accent grave
(It's only useful to the snob)
From C to shining C we'll soar
With no cedillas anymore.

American humor must sternly go
Marching in with no bon mot
And none could ever win our trust
Who puts on airs with some mot juste

Forget about your déjà vu
From World War I (or was it II?)
When, by jingo, German words
Were deemed a plague of language turds

And Liberty Cabbage rooted out
All vestiges of sauerkraut
While patriotic hearts did harden
To kick kids out of kindergarten

"I see London"? — fine, but France
Must not invade our underpants
No pantaloons for Uncle Sams
No sissy French defiles these hams!

The Anglo-Saxon ideologues
Will free our speech from mincing Frogs
We'll celebrate Red, White & Blue!
(Oh, wait — are those their colors too?)

Did you have a magic lasso too? :D

(j/k - I love Wonder Woman)

AGDPrincess70 03-13-2003 04:06 PM

It's times like this that I'm embarrassed to be an American.

It's bad enough that they caught Bush in a lie about some of the stuff that was found in Iraq, but now since France doesn't want to be involved, we can't use the word "French?" OOOOOH!!! That'll show them!

Are you f*cking kidding me? Welcome to eighth grade, folks.

My favorite part of the article? "The French Embassy in Washington had no immediate comment, except to say that french fries actually come from Belgium."

<bangs head against desk>

Just remember, these are the people who are running our country.

<gets down from soapbox>

AGDPrincess, that isn't so rediculous as this:

Bill Targets U.S. Troops Buried in France
JIM ABRAMS
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - In another swipe at the French, a Florida congresswoman has proposed that the government pay for families who might want to bring home from France the remains of Americans who fought and died in the world wars.

"I, along with many other Americans, do not feel that the French government appreciates the sacrifices men and women in uniform have made to defend the freedom that the French enjoy today," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite said in introducing legislation providing financial help for the reburial of veterans from the two world wars.

The legislation, which faces uncertain prospects, is the latest show of congressional frustration over French threats to veto a U.N. resolution that would open the way for U.S. military action against Iraq.

Earlier this week, the chairman of the House Administration Committee, Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, ordered that House restaurants change their menus to read "freedom fries" instead of French fries. French toast would also become freedom toast.

Lawmakers have also introduced bills to prevent France from participating in any postwar reconstruction projects.

Brown-Waite, a freshman Republican, said she decided to sponsor the bill after she was approached by a constituent who said he wanted to bring home his father, who was killed in World War II and buried in France.

Some 74,000 American war casualties are buried in France and Belgium, including 30,000 from World War I. The host nations, while retaining sovereignty over the burial grounds, have granted the land in perpetuity to the United States as military cemeteries.

Steve Thomas, a spokesman for the American Legion, said the veterans' group would need some time to look at the legislation. He said the American Legion has always respected the wishes of the families concerning those who died in combat, but noted that "a lot of people may not want to repatriate their fallen loved ones, separating them from their comrades, to make a statement about the French government."
-------------------------------------------

Yeah, let's spend all that money on this, while lots of school are falling apart, tuition for colleges get higher, etc. Talk about blind patriotism. I don't know if this is patriotic, but this is definately dumb.

Cluey 03-13-2003 07:39 PM

I doubt anyone actually gets their gravesite moved from France to the US. What some people fail to realize is that this is purely symbolic. It's funny because of the absurdity of it all. This is purely the frustration that is felt being acting out.

France is the country it is today because of the US involvement in WW I and II. When they were in danger, we didn't stand in their way, telling them not to attack. True, we didn't get involved at the beginning, because we were trying to stay out of the conflicts, but we never stood in their way.

Here we are in 2003, arguing with them about the malicious nature of Sadaam Hussein and whether he is tied to Al Queda or not. To me, I trust President Bush when he says that there is enough evidence out there connecting them. He's the one that sees the classified information.

If you can't support the President, at least support the troops.

texas*princess 03-13-2003 07:42 PM

On a more serious note (than my previous posts :D ), does anyone think these 'swipes' at the French might cause them to dislike us a lil bit??

I can understand that taking the "french" out of "french fries" and the French being upset about it, is about as crazy as the DZO sisters being upset about the post-it notes.. however, I think it might put a lil wedge in between our country and France..

Hey, we joke about Canada all the time and they don't hate us. Oh, wait . . . . :D

Honestly, though, I think these people are acting like middle schoolers. It's like when you're the popular girl and then one of the slightly less popular girls refuses to go along with one of your stupid ideas and then you bitch about and try to get everybody else to dislike her so she'll be pressured back into taking your side.

When international politics start to resemble junior high, you know you've got a problem.

Yep!

Kevlar281 03-14-2003 01:59 AM

Today this actually came up in class discussion but supposedly back during WWI and WWII many German dishes were changed as well. Sauerkraut was called Liberty Cabbage and Frankfurters were called hot dogs. I guess one of those stuck and the other didn’t.

/edit: crappy grammar

Little E 03-14-2003 05:02 AM

Everheard of a Frankfurter (sp?) yep that is a causality of on of the WW.

And the Sofitel hotel chain has stopped flying the french flag (it is a french company) Red Roof and i think motel 6 are also owned by it. But dumb greasy americans were threatening the workers in the hotels...and we wonder why people hate us...???

Someone put it great the other day when all the *freedom* was being spread. President Bush is going to circumvent the UN to get back at Sadam for circumventing the UN. hahahaha I love the irony!

Ok sorry to get too political. But i really like the idea of freedom kisses...maybe i'll go find the boy...;)

justamom 03-14-2003 11:32 AM

MAD AT THE WORLD!!!

Ok-right now I'm really peeved at France, Germany, Russia. China,
Mexico AND (as usual) CANADA!!!

So WHAT if it seems "sophomoric". It's merely a reflection (as someone else stated) of our frustration. I hope the "bucks stop HERE", in AMERICA. Keep our money circulating in OUR economy. When tourism and discretionary spending exits those countries
perhaps they will rethink their STINKY attitude. For the French to promise a VETO on a resolution they haven't even SEEN is the ULTIMATE slap in the face as well a the purest form of closed mindedness exemplified throughout this terrible ordeal. (Of course they are trying to backstep on this statement.)

So much hypocrisy on the part of "Liberals" who for YEARS were screaming about human rights (China), female subjagation/mutilation/ostrication...and now we have these "ladies" flexing "Pink" power... Have ANY of you seen the accounts of the Iraqis who have escaped after suffering horrendous torture and mutilation-escaped after seeing their wife and children RAPED and/or MURDERED???

We have bent over backward to gain support, but when we go (and I believe we will) and discover munition parts with "MADE IN FRANCE" or "GERMANY" maybe then the truth behind France's stance will be seen as it REALLY is-MONEY and CONTRACTS! This isn't a case of "Give peace a chance", this is a case of HIDING the source of the weapons and the monetary gains that will be lost by those who would be hurt by regime change...FRANCE to name one. So I will have my freedom fries and a salad with freedom dressing please! (Wow, that felt good...it's just MY opinion, nothing more.)

damasa 03-14-2003 11:38 AM

I'm still waiting for the day when the French pay off the loans that they were given after WWII by our country. Hell, I'm still waiting for them to pay off the INTEREST that they owe on them. They haven't paid us shit....

texas*princess 03-14-2003 12:10 PM

I am sure you said this in jest, but for me... Think I give a french $hit? Oooh, french scorn.

How sad it must be to be a former world power, currently a middle power with all the future world relevance of portugal or egypt, two former superpowers. lol.

Love how the French rejected Brittans plan before the Iraqi's did.

Phuckin French.

Munchkin03 03-14-2003 12:54 PM

Man, isn't it a great day to be from Flori-DUH? Frankly, this state's in enough trouble, and she needs to focus on that--not exhuming corpses from France. Whether you are pro- or anti-war, that's just silly.

And yes, I have seen the reports of all sorts of human rights violations suffered under the Hussein regime. THAT IS NOT WHY THE US WANTS TO GO TO WAR. No one's saying that he isn't megalomanaical and dictatorial; no one's saying that he should remain in power.
