Coke, pop, soda, etc.

Okay, I am in Kentucky and every carbonated beverage that is a cola product here is referred to as a Coke... Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, etc.
For instance, when there are mutiple people in a car at a drive thru you would ask them
"What kind of coke do you want with that"
This is more than accepted. Pop and soda are from people up north and they argue about it more than we do, but it still makes you an outsider if you call something a pop or soda here.

Any thoughts.....

texas*princess 03-06-2003 06:32 PM

Many texans also refer to carbonated beverages as "coke".

My boyfriend is originally from Washington state, and when he moved to Texas, he didn't understand why we called it "coke" instead of "soda" or "pop". He's been in Texas for awhile and has since changed his ways :p

DigitalAngel126 03-06-2003 06:36 PM

LOL I grew up in upstate NY and will always be a SODA drinker.. :) I moved to the midwest (IN) 10 years ago, and they all say pop...but it's still soda for me. :) As far as I'm concerned, "Pop" is a sound, not a drink. Heheheh. :p

FiReKraCkEr 03-06-2003 06:53 PM

Everything that's carbonated and in a can is referred to as "coke" here in Tennessee....

But my friends from the north always say "soda" or "pop"....weirdos...lol

DeltaSigStan 03-06-2003 07:20 PM

Umm we just say soda, or what specific soda it is, like "I'm drinking Vanilla Coke"

bruinaphi 03-06-2003 07:22 PM

Growing up in Los Angeles we called everything Coke. My mom moved to Washington when I was in HS and up there they call everything pop. It drives me NUTS! It's caused me to start saying soda b/c if you say "what kind of coke do you want?" they look at you like you're nuts.

Jadey28 03-06-2003 08:05 PM

Here in Maryland, we call it soda. Everytime I hear someone call it pop, I crack up laughing because it's funny to me :) Or we say what we are drinking...can you refill my Mountain Dew or whatever.

Betarulz! 03-06-2003 08:11 PM

It's POP!!!! Soda Pop is acceptable with soda being okay. Can't comprehend "coke" like in the following situation.

server: what kinda coke you want?
southerner: Dr. Pepper

That makes no sense!!!
It'd be like saying, "what kind of Budweiser do you want?" "oh, I'll have a Coors" it just doesn't work that way!

mu_agd 03-06-2003 08:14 PM

it's always been soda to me. when i started school in ohio someone asked me if i wanted a pop and i had no clue what they were talking about!

KillarneyRose 03-06-2003 08:30 PM

It'll always be "pop" to me! Although I ask for soda unless I'm home in Pittsburgh. I've lived in many places and am pretty adaptable :)

Dionysus 03-06-2003 08:34 PM

Sody :D

James 03-06-2003 08:50 PM

Diet something . . I know a bunch of fitness people.

lifesaver 03-06-2003 09:06 PM

I always used to say "Coke" then after hanging out with the brothers from our University of Maine chapter at our Fraternity's Leadership Conference, picked up their habit of callign it a "soda.'" Ever sense then, I have called it that. My mom and sister give me grief.

Damn Yankees.

BTW, there are even differences about the way things are called in state. For instance, what do you call the side roads next to a freeway, that are used for getting on and off of the freeway that connect you to the side streets? In San Antonio, theyre "access roads," in Houston, they're "feeder" roads, in Dallas they're "service" roads, in Austin its "frontage" road.

Damnedest thing.

sugar and spice 03-06-2003 09:48 PM

Midwesterners (especially Wisconsinites) are stereotyped as saying "pop" all the time, but I think that in reality, "soda" is just as common.

I prefer soda. Or like James, I often refer to it as "diet something," as in

"Do you want anything to drink?"
"Just grab me a diet something."

MoxieGrrl 03-06-2003 09:58 PM

It's pop to me. If it's a brand name, I'll say, "Can you get me a Diet Pepsi?" If it's the generic kind, "Grab me a diet pop."

Optimist Prime 03-06-2003 10:10 PM

I live in VA which is the most south you can get (cuz its the capital, thats why) and um....its soda.

dixiesong3131 03-06-2003 10:54 PM

Up here in Cleveland, it's definitely pop.

Fun story: i was in NYC this past winter break and getting lunch one day when the guy was taking my order, i asked for pop, and the guy looked at me like i had three heads. Then remembering that I wasn't in Ohio anymore, I asked for a pepsi.

AGDLynn 03-06-2003 10:58 PM

Hate being in Atlanta and in a restuarant where, " I'll have a Coke" and the the reply is "Is Pepsi okay??":p :p THIS IS ATLANTA!

No, I'll have the SWEET tea!;) :D

DeltAlum 03-06-2003 11:00 PM

Growing up in Ohio, I drank pop. (And beer). Later, moving to the East Coast, I drank soda. (And beer) In Wisconsin, I continued drinking soda. (And beer) In Colorado, we drink soda or pop or simply use the trade name -- "I'll have a ginger ale." (And a beer)

White_Chocolate 03-06-2003 11:36 PM

i say 'soda' because i'm from texas
but i say 'soda water' too because i'm from texas
so, it's either soda or soda water

CutiePie2000 03-06-2003 11:45 PM

In Canada, it's "pop".

Cluey 03-07-2003 12:00 AM

I always say Coke!

And, I am like you, AGDLynn! If I ask for a Coke and they say is Pepsi ok, I immediately change my drink choice. Sweet tea is usually my back up. What makes me really upset is when I am somewhere and they have neither!

My sentiments exactly!

My family is from New York, so it has always been SODA for me. :)

DeltaSigStan 03-07-2003 12:22 AM

In California it's Soda......

No one asks "What kind of coke would you like?" It's always what kind of SODA would you like?

I lived in Arizona for eight years and it's the same thing as California...SODA.:)

Kevin 03-07-2003 02:16 AM

Everything in Oklahoma is a Coke.. If it's a large size you can even call it a "Big 'ol" coke.

doubleblue&gold 03-07-2003 03:06 AM

They're ALL soft drinks!

Personally, I'm a Diet Cokeaholic!

Actually all my friends around LA County and down into Northern Orange County all call it coke. Maybe it's regional in California as to whether its coke, soda, or pop.

As for when I ask for a coke and the waitress says they carry Pepsi, my answer is "All the Better, I'll have a Pepsi"

SATX*APhi 03-07-2003 03:20 AM

Down here everybody says "coke" and up until a couple of years ago, I always said "coke" as well. I have no idea why, but one day I started saying "soda" and never stopped.

Arrrrrrrrrghhhhhh! Sacrilege! :)

LuaBlanca 03-07-2003 09:00 AM

In MA:

soda = carbonated water w/ flavored syrups added to make it taste like lemon-lime, cola, etc.
seltzer water = carbonated water (sometimes called soda water) that is often added to mixed drinks
pop = your father (noun) or an onomatopoetic adverb (or verb) regarding a loud sound (ex. Pop popped the ballon.)
coke = brand name cola

What drives me crazy is when I order a Diet Coke and they bring me a Diet Pepsi  Since I no longer live in Kentucky, I've learned to ask if a restaurant has Coke. If not, it's unsweetened iced tea as a backup (because they CAN'T make sweet tea here to save their lives!)

It's a Coke, whether it's a Diet Coke or a Dr. Pepper or a Root Beer, it's a Coke!

Just don't try to go into an ice cream store in Boston and order a milkshake! I remember my first 'milkshake' and it was so wrong (from a southern standpoint :D)

That's just bizare. But I suppose it's good for Coke if people identify with their product...and Dr.Pepper is actually a Pepsi product.

Anyhoo, it's never been refered to as soad in Canada. I have never ever heard anyone use that term. It's always Pop.

Actually, no. Dr. Pepper is an independent brand owned by the Dr. Pepper/7up Company, which in turn is a subsidiary of the British candy manufacturer Cadbury/Schweppes. Pepsi Cola does distribute Dr. Pepper in some locations, though.

xo_kathy 03-07-2003 11:45 AM

I'm from Michigan so it was always pop. Now I live in NY and I have to force "soda" out when I go somewhere or they have no clue what I mean. That's what I don't get. When I lived in Michigan, if a visitor asked for soda, I knew they meant pop. Why New Yorkers can't figure the same thing out in the reverse I am not sure?

When I first got here someone at work was going out and I asked her to get me a pop. She said, "What kind". I said, "Diet Pepsi" and she said, "OH a SODA! I thought you meant a lollipop or something!?!" I said, "No, if I wanted that I would have asked for a sucker." "A SUCKER??? That's what you call lollipops?!?!" Yeah, yeah, get going in your stupid 'sneakers' (they are tennis shoes dammit)

Also, I now have my NY born and bread boyfriend saying 'pop'! Victory!!!!!! :D

A little bit off topic, but I remember going to Spain when I was 14 . . . I was craving milkshakes the whole trip so we kept going into restaurants that had them advertised . . . it turns out that a "milkshake" in Spain was flavored milk. Unfortunately I had to wait till I got home to have a real shake.

What's wrong with Boston milkshakes?

ilovemyglo 03-07-2003 02:17 PM

And you all probably thought when you saw this thread
"That crazy AGD- doesn't she know that it is called .... (Fill in the blank)" But anyway,
I just crack up over this one because I know it is kind of ubsurd to say coke meaning any type of soda/pop but in Louisville it is crazy to call it anything else. everyone here says coke.

We have the same idea about coke/pepsi, though... gimme a sweet tea instead.

Blue Violet 03-07-2003 02:22 PM

we say soda out here

..and if you want tea you have a choice of hot or cold. Not sweet or unsweet. I don't drink tea though.I'm a Mountain Dew JUNKIE!!!!!!!

ilovemyglo 03-07-2003 02:30 PM

Okay, that right there- that hot or cold- that is just plain WRONG!!! Tea only comes on ice. Lemon is an option (sugar is not).
