war movies?
Two questions:
1) what are you favorites? 2) what is on the horizon? Some old favorites of mine are Glory, Behind Enemy Lines, Saving Private Ryan (of course), Platoon, Memphis Belle, and Last of the Mohicans. I don't know how many war movies are coming out in the next few months but Tears of the Sun and Basic are definitely on my list. Although I think Basic is going to be more of a conspiracy theory than an all out war film. But Samuel L. Jackson is a badass so I can't be turned away. |
Platoon is the best war movie ever made, period
then: 2) Full Metal Jacket 2) Saving Private Ryan 4) Glory Other I like include Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Hamburger Hill, Casualties of War. I'll name some others as they come up in my head. |
Platoon is a good one. The great escape.
Not sure if it counts as a war movie, but Taps. Also Das Boot is an all time great. |
Glory has to be one of the all time favorites. Showing Civil War at what the Blacks did during it!
Any John Wayne War Movie. Some got to graphic and depressing, even thought it was true along with Platoon, or many others! In the Words of a Famous General, WAR IS HELL! Most of you do not realize What War is, Men Dieing! Whether it be our side or theirs, they all have Families who will miss them and have a hard time living! I will not get into this Iraqie Almost War, but Our Civilian Soldiers will die and come home in body bags leaving Familys and Freinds! God if there is one, do not let this happen! |
Saving Private Ryan
Thin Red Line Schindler's List Uprising First Knight Braveheart |

I still really liked it because I can usually deal with movies that are slower. But, I can also see how it is getting horrible reviews. I still think it's a damn good movie though. But I'll tell everyone to wait until it comes out on video, it's not fun watching that long of a movie in the theater. |

The Great Escape is loosely based on a real life mass POW break out in WW II. Fifty were recaptured and later executed by the Nazi SS. Only two managed to make the 'home run' back to Allied lines. My list of favorites: Battle of Britain (outstanding aerial footage) Patton The Siege of Fire Base Gloria By Dawn's Early Light (fictional representation of an actual nuclear strike mission, but the procedures are authentic) Hamburger Hill The Big Red One The Longest Day A Bridge Too Far Return With Honor it's a documentary about Vietnam War POWs and how they managed to outwit and outlast their captors. |
Failsafe is a thought-provoking movie -- it was one of Larry Hagman's (JR Ewing) first movies
but i like most military and/or spy movies |
Sh*t... how could I forget Fail-Safe? (The original version; never saw the George Clooney TV remake, though I'm told it was good.).
Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb is also pretty good, even though it is a total satire of nuclear command and control. |
Ok I hope someone knows what movie I am talking about because for the life of me I can’t recall the name. It’s a short/mini movie that I saw as filler between movies on the Sundance channel. It is set after the civil war where caring/transporting the confederate flag is a considered a crime/act of war. Well the protagonist receives a request to bring the flag to a funeral ceremony but he is intercepted by union soldiers in route. He evades capture only to be caught by a freed slave. For the former slave to let him go on his way he has to make a choice of what to give him in return. The flag or a locket from the woman he loves. He makes his choice and is murdered on his way to the funeral. Does anyone know the name of this movie?

Good Morning Vietnam!!! lol :p
Braveheart Platoon I just saw Platoon last year, quite disturbing, but that just shows it was well done....my friends refuse to see any war movies because of Platoon - they can't handle the violence (they walked out during the opening of Saving Private Ryan) |

At least they did finally release the complete musical score to the film, though, performed by Miklos Rosza. (https://secure.filmscoremonthly.com/...lCD.asp?ID=241) |

favorite war movies
Favorite War Movies:
"Kartoum" Charlton Heston. About General Gordon and the seige of Kartoum by the Mahdi. Good theatre, pretty good history, lots of action, fun guy flic. "Charge of the Light Brigade" 1930's version. Errol Flynn/Olivia deHaviland. Fabricated history but great fun. Good guy flic and (according to my sister) pretty good chic flic as well. "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" John Wayne/Joanne Dru. One of John Ford's best directing efforts, reasonably accurate picture of the old frontier Army. A classic in every sense. "The Long Gray Line" Tyrone Power/Maureen O'Hara. Not a dry eye in the house, and a great guy flic as well. The Old Army seen through several generations at West Point "Gone With the Wind" What a film! "The Blue Max" George Peppard/James Mason/Ursula Andress. World War One aviation flic from the German point of view. Well done. "Lawrence of Arabia" Peter O'Toole. Epic story of a campaign of WW-1 that set the stage for the development of the Middle East as it is today. Pretty topical just now. "The Horse Soldiers" John Wayne. Dramatization of the Grierson Raid with a few other stories thrown in. The scene where the Union Cavalry faces off with the kids from the military school who have marched out to block their advance strikes close to home as something like that really happened. My New Orleans cousins' great great grandfather commanded the corps of cadets of what is now the Jesuit High School - New Orleans when they turned back an attempt by a Michigan Cavalry regiment to attack the city from the North via the River Road while the Union fleet pushed up the river from the South. 246 boys ranging in age from 12 to 16 beat hell out of the 800 troopers to the extent that the unit was removed from the Union Army Order of Battle and deactivated. The city fell shortly thereafter but I understand that to this day the school's flag carries a battle honor. Pretty terrible event, but by God those kids earned their spurs that day. Anyway, its a good film and well worth watching. What is on the horizon: Pray for peace but be ready for the alternative. |
Saving Private Ryan and Braveheart... not very original on my part, but great.
|
I just saw 'The Damned'
It's an old movie about the German Nazi SS Disturbing but great work People who like weird twists They would like it |

hey, no love for 1941? :D Belushi makes this movie worth watching. Saving Private Ryan Gladiator(kinda a war movie) Patton My dad's a big fan of "Tora! Tora! Tora!" Although, it's tough watching military themed movies with my parents. Both are retired Army and usually spend the entire movie pointing out inaccuracies in uniforms, military protocol, etc. As far as new war movies coming out, i believe there's a new "Alamo" epic being released. You can bet your behind i'll be there :D Kitso KS 361 |
oooh... I just read that one of the "soldiers" in Tears of the Sun is the real thing. He served as a Recon Marine for four years. I bet his influence ups the realism of the movie.
also caught a cool clip of the movie on Yahoo. I guess they have some special deal or something. Anyway, its pretty intense! I like the effects at the end. |
Apocalypse Now
The Best Years of Our Lives Deer Hunter Coming Home |
Really liked We Were Soldiers...
Black Hawk Down was good too-- but that really disturbed me... I didn't really care for Saving Private Ryan. |
