Why dont you show who you are?

This may have been on a thread way back when!

I give hell to my Brothers about it all of the time! ( This came from a just previous thread)

Why do you as Greeks not buy your Badge of honor and wear it proudly to show Who You are? Cost? BS! Dont wear it that much? BS! Not Proud that you worked to get it! BS!

I get to wear Mine twice a year if lucky for formal occasions as an Alum! But what about when you are on campus. Recruiting, looking good, or just being Proud of the Org. you are a member of?:( Be Cool, Look Cool and Be Someone Cool!

Advertise, Bud, Nike, Gap, Old Navy, Why?

What are you more Proud to wear that Crap! Or your own ? ? ? !

Check the Alum Thread and see who many people are working their butts off to become members and work damn hard to do it! They will become better members than 37 % of the Actual members whom join as Under Grads and continue onward to Help! :)

AlphaSigOU 02-21-2003 08:11 PM

Whenever possible, I wear my badge twice a year - on April 20 (the anniversary of my initiation) and December 6 (Alpha Sigma Phi Founder's Day).

Sistermadly 02-21-2003 08:30 PM

Because...

I don't have a badge yet. :D

wreckingcrew 02-21-2003 08:30 PM

I agree Tom!

I take every opportunity possible to wear mine. Every meeting, whenever i'm serving on IFC J-Board, or pretty much any time that i'm in badge attire and on campus i'll put my Badge on.

Since i get to borrow a Corps uniform to graduate in when i walk in May, i'm seriously considering throwing my Badge on that bad boy as well :P

To me, i love wearing my badge, it's what our badge stands for that separates me from the GDI's on campus and the other fraternities too :)

In my chapter you are actually supposed to wear it backwards on the lapel of your coat so only the actual pin is showing and no one but brothers are supposed to see the front and the engraving on the back of the badge. I think we are the only chapter to do this. Also the big gives them their badge until nationals sends their littles theirs.

Optimist Prime 02-22-2003 01:56 AM

Don't wear your badge to work its unprofessional. YOu might be around people who have had a bad experience or were unable to be a part of Greek life. Don't rub their faces in it.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 02-22-2003 04:06 AM

it's part of our tradition that the badge is not to become everyday apparel.

That said, I wear mine to church (so, 52 x a year). Phi Mu means christianity to me (IT MEANS MANY THINGS TO MANY PEOPLE AND IS NOT A CHRISTIAN SORORITY) and supports the same values I learn at church. Plus, it's pretty.

and I do welcome the comments :-) isn't it great to educate

CarolinaCutie 02-22-2003 12:25 PM

At my school, all the Panhellenic sororities wear letters every Wednesday and badge attire every other Thursday. Not everyone does it... I think it is nice to walk around campus and see a young woman in a nice outfit (it catches your attention in the sea of jeans and sneakers) and then notice that she is wearing her badge.

Kevin 02-22-2003 01:53 PM

I've said this in another thread... but I'm with Kitso. EVERY CHANCE YOU GET. Anytime I'm in 'badge attire' I'll be sporting either my normal size badge or my jewelled one (depending on the occasion) Usually I wear the jewelled one ot Sigma Nu functions and the normal one to work, etc.

Tom Earp 02-22-2003 08:25 PM

I gueass I was not making my self clear as usual!

I was refering to The Actives in school. I would love to wear my Badge anytime but we too are given instructions on what to wear our Badges with and on!

I even went out and found a local guy to do polo shirts and hats with LXA on it as got tired of being ask for more bucks than it should have been!:o

I tried to make it available to Brothers around the Country but to no avail.

That is why I feel that people do not see what good We as Greeks do as We are not advertising ourselves enough. Well only in the News Media and all they want is Bad News! Just ask DeltaAlum and LXAAlum, they are bot connected to the newsmedia.

TTFN!

At my school Greeks wear their letters every Friday... at least. We are proud of our letters. Any time I dress up nicely, I wear my badge. I wore it today to the basketball game because I had to dress up to sing the national anthem, and I wore it like twice this week because I had to dress up a lot.

I know that the TKEs here wear their badges if they don't wear their letters every Friday, and I see many other fraternities wearing theirs when they are dressed appropriately. But we all wear letters all the time... hell I have enough to go through two weeks without having to do laundry! :D

JonoBN41 02-23-2003 01:13 AM

I can't speak for Tom, but I'd like to think our actives are wearing letters at least every Friday and a few more days in between, and wearing their badges at all semi-formal events and others when they're nicely dressed.

We alumni have fewer opportunities to wear the badge and even fewer to wear a jersey (it can look silly when you're 50!) and sadly is appropriate a very limited number of days during the year.

But the alumni aren't the ones rushing or upholding the reputation of our respective organizations: it's the actives!

They are the ones who plan for the future, are full of fire, give us the current reputation, and should be proud to wear the letters and badges and promote themselves!

As an alumnus, I do what I can. But what I wear isn't really going to make a big difference one way or the other.

The actives are the ones on campus, and it's up to them. That's the way I see it.

phisig4life 02-24-2003 04:23 PM

At my school we are Letter crazy. We put letter's on everything. Our chapter has a ridiculous amount of t-shirts, bags, sunglasses, checkbook covers, wallets, bracelets, necklaces, shoelaces jackets, hoodies, mugs, pencils, pens everything. We are always advertising our greek affiliation(although of course when its inappropriate to show letters, we don't). The LXA's here would make you proud Tom, their letters are everywhere.

Tom Earp 02-24-2003 10:36 PM

phisig4 what school? I will see if they have a web site and check it out! Thanks!!!!!!:)

phisig4life 02-24-2003 11:32 PM

we're at Northern Michigan University, but unfortunatley they don't have a website, they're working on it though.

Badges

I have a badge from IHQ that was returned when an older member passed away. The badge is paper-thin from almost seventy years of wear, and the family wanted it to go to someone who would wear it proudly. I try to honor that request and wear it almost daily with appropriate clothes.

I am an Alum. I dress for work. I am not ashamed of my affiliation. As an Alum Initiate, my affilitation to AOII is very important to me. I understand that others have different feelings. This is just my way to honor the organization and the member that went on before me.

Roses,
AOIISilver

Once I finally get my badge (cf, all of my AI threads) you won't be able to tear it off of me.
If "wearing a pin" is an issue, women can sometimes finds pendants designed to attach to the clasp on the back--then it's a pendant.

No new news yet, folks. Still waiting.....

excited about badges

As an alum, I, too, find it hard to find "appropriate" times to wear my badge. Anytime I'm dressed up for church (I often perform at churches around town) I try to wear it. But that's really it. I dress up for work, but I deal DIRECTLY with the public, and in my position I don't feel it's appopriate. If I were in an office, I would likely feel differently.
My other problem is that our badges are all yellow gold, and I *never* wear yellow gold.. always white gold and/or silver. And I don't like to "mix" the two.
So I consulted with my national council.. and they OK'd me (and anyone) getting a white gold badge! :D I just ordered it yesterday & have to wait a painful 6 weeks, but I'll be wearing that EVERY chance I get!
AOII silver- I think that's awesome that you have that old badge from the alumnae. It sounds like it went to the perfect person!

SnowLady 02-27-2003 07:28 PM

I wore mine under my wedding dress against my heart.

I'm lucky, as a chapter adviser, I have many opportunities to wear my badge!

sigtau305 02-28-2003 12:56 PM

I'm the only one who pretty much wear my letters everyday to school even though I have classes on tuesdays and thursdays. I wear my badge on numeorus occassions, only when it's appropiate.:D

PiPhiGirl2005 03-03-2003 09:44 AM

We are required to wear our pins to class on the first Monday of every month, and to wear something with our letters or name on it on the other three Mondays. However, I have so many Pi Phi sweatshirts and t-shirts that I find myself wearing them almost every day! :) It is difficult to wear my pin more often, though, since we must be in "pin attire", which is defined as "khakis or nicer". Dressing up every day is just not easy to do! :)

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-03-2003 11:57 AM

I love the idea of wearing it under your wedding dress!

Winterbloom 03-03-2003 06:05 PM

We have one day a week during our pledge period where the entire sisterhood either wears letters or our badge. Whenever we perform, we wear our badges proudly. Also, on the 29th of each month, our chapter day, we dress up in colours and wear our badge. SAI letters are all over the SU campus. We have hats and jackets and keychains and car stickers, it's crazy! I know I proudly wear my SAI cap whenever I'm going around town. I love my letters and my badge; I will use any excuse to wear them when appropriate!

my badge was pinned to my bouqet when I got married :) yeah and my Sis-mom was my maid of honor and about half my pledge class were my bridesmaids.....oh did I mention the red and buff roses? yeah anyway...

I love wearing my badge. Unfortunately scrubs aren't considered badge attire or else I would wear it to work too! I'm in the process of attaining a vintage badge from IHQ to have set into a ring so I can show my AGD pride without a lavalier or letter shirt

valpogal99 03-03-2003 11:38 PM

"Have TO???"

One theme that has reoccurred in this discussion is the idea of "have to" (ie, we have to wear it every other Monday, etc). As a chapter we would make it a suggestion that all sisters wear their badge on certain dates but nothing happened if you didn't. Every member of our chapter chose to wear her badge on that day. The only "have to" dates we had were ritual related times. Wearing your badge is a thing of honor. I hope that all Greeks feel the same. As an Alumna member, I try to wear my badge often. I do not wear it every day because it is not to be worn as another piece of jewelry. However, I am getting a ring that allows you to permanently affix a badge so that I can wear it most days (I have purchased a separate badge to put in the ring so I still have my pin that I was initiated with to wear as a badge).
