sorority Life
Has anyone seen the mtv commercials for sorority life 2 and frat life? Am i the only one annoyed beyond beleif by these commercials?
|
ok here's the thing.
(I know I'm bad to start a convo on this but...) I know that everyone whines about how horrible the show is. I agree the first season misrepresented Greek Life, but yet it was amusing. I enjoyed laughing at their drama and whatnot, because I'm sure the drama in my house looks that dumb sometimes. Why not do it as a big/lil event and with the new pledges about the realities of Greek Life or do it as an informal rush, or even just an event between houses. Maybe I'm off key here, but do something proactive about it. Talk about it, be honest and see if that gets farther than just whining about how much is misrepresents GLOs. I'm sorry, I'm just sick of people whining about the show, but many people watch it anyhow. Use it to your advantage, turn it around and address it in the open. That is my two cents. Do what you will with it. |
I'm not complaining about the show..I was fully addicted to the first season of sorority life. (although i won't apologize for the fact i do think it was a misrepresentation of the AVERAGE sorority). I don't expect MTV to put the plain average stuff we do everyday on tv because in all seriousness who would watch it? I just think the commercials are fully irritating.
side note: Wasn't the chapter on sorority life a local? I heard recently they are trying to go national now. |

All the organizations taped by MTV are locals; none of the national organizations would consent to being on the show. |
The commercials don't bother me at all -- the "Sorority Life" one cracks me up every time because one of my mom's friends really is just like that lady.
But I miss the barbie commercials. Say what you want about Sorority Life, those were CLASSIC! |
Little E, you rock!
I too miss the Barbie doll commercials. *sigh* |
I LOVE THEM!!!!
I adore the new commercials! Love the accent, love the pearls, love the kelly green and lavender dress. It's just so, so stereotypical southern sorority woman! :o I laugh every time. The way she says D Z O is classic! I do hope they bring back the Barbie dolls at the end of the season to reenact scenes though. :D
I know someone in another thread said the commercials made it look like it was going to be all party all the time, but I did not see anything over the top. Think of all the stuff you do in a semester and cram it into less than 30 seconds. Even if you hardly party at all, it'll look crazy! Did anyone notice that they're focusing on twice as many of the fraternity brothers than the sisters? I checked out the site and the list of bros goes on and on. Does that mean the guys are half as boring that they need twice as many men???? |
perhaps...
there aren't that many girls in the sorority. i checked out the web site and it looks like a fairly small group.
:D |
I haven't seen the commercials yet, but I was wondering.. when does the second season start?
As much as I disliked the show the first time around, I'm a total 'reality-tv' addict :p And I agree with everyone who says "Bring back the Barbie commericals!!!!" please? :D |
I have a feeling the commercials where they refer to the Fraternity Life stars as "Sigma Chi men" won't be on very long, unless they want to get their butts sued...

However, I crossed over from annoyance into nausea after the first one. I'd be interested in hearing from the locals whether they actually believed that their dignity would be preserved in this whole process, rather than having it offered up like a toy mouse to a cat. More than ever, I appreciate the nationals who set rules in place on MTV at the very beginning. Adrienne (PNAM-2003) |

i am a sorority life addict- i admit this....but i am kind of annoyed that they areusing the XI incorrectly...it's either Delta ZEEE omega, or Delta ZEYE omega, it can't be both.
|
I've seen it all...
|
Something with the wording on that t-shirt doesn't seem exactly correct....I dunno, but it seems like in"From the Bible to MTV, Jewish women still strong" is missing something, a few words maybe?
|
So I've been bored out of my mind, so I decided to go on the MTV website and look at the whole fraternity/sorority life stories and i was reading the 20 questions things for the guys and girls... I was laughing so hard... this fraternity and sorority sound like they despise each other... that cracks me up so much... they both make these terribly mean comments about the other and, although some of them are sad, I think it's funny that MTV has paired them up for this reality TV junk we all love and hate so much, but they don't like each other. So now I want to watch because I think it just might be too funny...
On a side note regarding reality TV, I'm so proud of the whole Joe Millionaire guy picking the sweet, modest girl... they're perfect for each other! I just hope they'll last! Yay! |

I'm just saying people usually go all psycho when Sorority Life is mentioned. I just think that instead of whining about it, take it and make it yours. Make it a way to look at your chapter if it bothers you.
Honestly though, this is the first semi-civil thread I've seen on SL. I think that sometimes we (the GLO community) take ourselves too seriously, and need to take an amusing show and make it something to show our good points. It is more proactive than noses in the air over it all. I dunno, maybe I'm not explaining my meaning well, besides, this is off the topic of the thread. Tau Love Lil E |

Did anyone see the Sorority Life reunion special? |
guilty

If I remember correctly (and it was a long time ago that I learned the Greek alphabet), it is pronounced "zee" if it follows a vowell, and "Zi" otherwise. You're right, however, that within the sorority, they should use one or the other -- and they should know which one. Frankly, I don't remember what Delta is. |
Meet The Greeks
Did anyone watch the Meet The Greeks special that has been airing on MTV? They introduced some of the brothers and sisters of the two chapters. For once MTV actually showed A LOT of brother/sisterhood activities and philanthropy work. I'm hoping MTV doesn't use that as an excuse to say "look we DID show it" and then not show any of those things during the series.
I think having two chapters that are able to interact with each other will make this series soooooooo much more interesting. The toga party and prank war footage looked hilarious! Side note: boys house = filthy disgusting!!! |
I can't wait for the new season (of both shows). I admit I am fully addicted. However....
I can't stand the commercials. I know MTV is parodying sorority and fraternity life but I think that the commercials are blatantly insulting. The commercials are basically saying "Yeah, all the colors, creeds, ideals, etc are Bullsh*t---all we're here for is the drinking and co-eds" I tend to be fairly relaxed about things and not all PC all the time...but to me those commercials are a slap in the face of the organizations. On a different note, my friend and I watched Meet the Greeks last night and the frat house is gross!!! And one bathroom in the sorority house???? That's crazy! |
i don't like the commercials...but i did see the Meet the Greeks Sneak Preview...i can't wait for the series to start even though it interferes with American Idol :(

AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Sorority Life 3 is already filming and they are doing it ar my school! Once again it is a local, this time a multicultural sorority which mainly has Phillipino girls in it. The entire school is opposed to this action, they recieved a petition of over 9000 people asking them not to do this and they just don't care. We know that this will not only very negatively affect recruitment (as our sisters from UC Davis have told us) but also that it could affect the school's reputation as a whole and really negatively affect our school's recruitment. It's not just bad for sororities either. The Pikes at UC Davis lost their charter because they were on camera in letters drinking with SAEP. This problem affects all Greeks. Therefore, all Greeks need to take action. Write your national panhellenic delegate. Talk to your advisors. Sadly, we are the ones MTV is marketing to because we all watch the show to see how bad it is even though we hate it. If NPC was to advise an all-Greek boycott of this show, both collegiates and alumni, we can get this show cancelled. Similarly, we should all write MTV's sponsors and tell them of our decision to boycott this show. We must take action. Writing MTV is not going to do a thing. As long as there is money in it, MTV will keep filming. So let's take the money out of it. Talk to your national, write MTV"s sponsors and most importantly, stop watching the damn show. If all Greeks can unite on this, we can stop this negative publicity. Fight on! |

I believe someone earlier said it best.... use this tv show as an opportunity for dialogue during rush or with some other event. People in general must now by now that TV is not the same as real life. I myself love the commercials, especially with that southern lady. Her accent KILLS me especially when she pronounces the sorority's name. |

And it's not like "Sorority Life" has presented a one-hundred percent terrible version of real sorority life. The Sigmas, for example, showed MTV viewers that not all sorority girls are blond, beautiful, skinny and stuck-up -- there were plenty of brunette, average-looking and down-to-earth girls in that sorority. And if what Chloe said and the rumors about "Sorority Life 3" are true, it's awesome that they'll be showing a multicultural sorority on the show, which will help to dispel the rumors that the Greek system is racist/elitist/whatever. I hate to break it to you guys, but the stereotypes MTV is perpetuating are already held to be true by most anti-Greeks. They already assume we drink all the time, haze, are promiscuous -- so the fact that MTV is showing them a show with the same theme doesn't mean much. And at the same time, we are getting some decent publicity out of it -- the viewers are also seeing that sorority girls are not cookie cutter and some of them are actually really nice, down-to-earth, cool girls. Of course, I could retract that entire statement after this season -- we'll see. I love the Southern lady too! |

I work with a girl who was in an NPC at Buffalo. She is a recent graduate and knows many of the people who will be shown. She's going to hold viewing parties and give us the low-down on people, Greek Life there, etc. I'll let you know if I hear anything scandelous! ;)
Also, she mentioned that she spoke to some of her sisters who are still there, and even if they were at an all-Greek philanthropy or something, MTV was asking everyone to sign waivers to be shown. Obviously her NPC group refused to sign. And she mentioned they didn't hold any events with the fraternity while the show was being taped. |
If it's in "Los Angeles" area, that's a huge area to cover. I'm guessing they chose someplace like CSU Long Beach. I haven't seen evidence that would show that they're at CSU Northridge, in the San Fernando Valley. They approached my fraternity, did an phone interview, and then promptly never contacted us again.
|
They aren't filming at Long Beach, that I know... we don't have an A-D-Pi chapter...so it must be elsewhere. I can't remember where chloe goes, but I think that it is USC right?
|
I believe that chloe173 is at USC.
I completely agree with everything sugar and spice said. No matter what group they choose, unless it's a nun group, they are going to play up whatever drinking and drama there is - no one can be an angel for all that time. I think I would be more offended if they showed the sort of group where all the clothes are designer, all the women are WASPs and the house looks like Buckingham Palace. That makes so many women think they are not cut out to be in a sorority and I think we lose more prospective members to that than to the drinking/hazing aspect. |

I am definitely going to be watching, but not because of the sorority. I want to see all my old haunts on the North Campus and Chippewa! ;) |
