Your creed/symphony/etc.
I wonder if we could get a bunch of different orgs. to post their respective creeds? (I use "creed" to loosely mean what your org. has chosen as what they live by. I know Chi O uses "symphony," Kappa Sigma has their "Star and Crecent," etc.)
I think it'd be interesting to compare how we're alike, and what makes us different, at the most basic level. |
Below is the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose:
To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me. To develop and prize health and vigor of body. To cultivate acquaintance with many whom I meet. To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships. To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world's work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied. To honor my home, my country, my religious faith. To hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential, kindness invaluable. To covet beauty in environment, manner, word and thought. To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them. This shall be my purpose that those who know me may esteem Alpha Gamma Delta for her attainments, revere her for her purposes and love her for her womanhood |
Yay! I finally get to do this!
The Alpha Phi Creed
I believe in my Fraternity. I believe in the friendships formed in the springtime of my youth. I believe in its high ideals which lift me up beyond myself. I believe in its earnest drive for good scholarship, moral character, and genuine culture. I believe in it as a shrine of international sisterhood wherein I may find love and loyalty, sympathy and understanding inspiration and opportunity. I believe in it as a creator of good citizenship, helping me to do my work well, to live in harmony with others, and to serve my country and to trust in God. I believe in my Fraternity. I believe in Alpha Phi. |

The Star and Crescent shall not be worn by every man, but only by him who is worth to wear it. He must be a gentleman . . . a man of honor and courage . . . a man of zeal, yet humble . . . an intelligent man . . . a man of truth . . . one who tempers action with wisdom and, above all else, one who walks in the light of God. |

AST's creed:
As a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, I believe in the permanence and loveliness of its ideals. I believe in the values of friendship and fidelity to purpose. I believe in the fulfillment of self and will strive to contribute my share to the progress of mankind. I believe in cultivating beauty of spirit and graciousness of living in all my contacts with others. I believe that faithfulness to these ideals will help me to live joyously and valiantly. |
There is a 50-post thread on this subject: Your Creed.
|
The Short Creed of Sigma Nu:
To believe in the life of love, To walk in the way of honor, To serve in the light of truth. This is the life, the way and the light of Sigma Nu. This is the Creed of our Fraternity. |
as mysticcat has stated there is a thread about this where I have posted the Phi Sigma Kappa creed. You can either read it there or here at Phi Sigma Kappa - Ideals . We have a local slogan that has to do with our crest and the 3 T's on it. People keep asking us what they mean, although this is only known to brothers, we use the slogan "Don't Die Wondering". One of our other symphonies/creedos/national slogans, is the title of our membership manual, a copy of which every candidate(our nationals just recently switched the term from associate member) recieves. That is "The Hills and a Star", 2 more are as follow in caps, and I must say I am DAMN PROUD!! to say BY THESE THINGS I STAND!!

Our purpose:
The purpose of Delta Delta Delta shall be to establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members, to develop a stronger and more womanly character, to broaden the moral and intellectual life, and to assist its members in every possible way. It shall also be the purpose of Delta Delta Delta to promote and develop mutually beneficial relationships between the Fraternity and the colleges and universities where the Fraternity has established chapters, to develop qualities of unselfish leadership among its members, and to encourage them to assume, with integrity and devotion to moral and democratic principles, the highest responsibilities of college women. |

The Creed of Alpha Sigma Alpha: To fill my days with satisfying activity, To find dominant beauty in art, literature, nature and friendships, To know the peace and serenity of a divine faith, To love life and joyously live each day to its ultimate good- This is my creed in Alpha Sigma Alpha -Wilma Wilson Sharp |
The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha
To realize that within our grasp, in Zeta Tau Alpha, lies the opportunity to learn those things which will ever enrich and ennoble our lives; to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle; to think in terms of all mankind and our service in the world; to be steadfast, strong, and clean of heart and mind, remembering that since the thought is father to the deed, only that which we would have manifested in our experience should be entertained in thought; to find satisfaction in being, rather than seeming, thus strengthening in us the higher qualities of the spirit; to prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving, thereby earning the right to be served; to seek understanding that we might gain true wisdom; to look for the good in everyone; to see beauty, with its enriching influence; to be humble in success, and without bitterness in defeat; to have the welfare and harmony of the Fraternity at heart, striving ever to make our lives a symphony of high ideals, devotion to the right, the good, and the true, without a discordant note; remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was love, "the greatest of all things."

I know there is already a lenghty thread pertaining to the creeds of the GLOs, but I am personally always happy to have the opportunity to write out my creed and to read that of other organizations.
They are all so beautiful and well-written that it is a perfect opportunity to show potential greeks, "Hey, it's more than winning Greek Week or vying to be the best-dressed chapter. THIS is what we're REALLY about!" The Delta Zeta Creed To the world, I promise temperance and insight and courage, To crusade for justice, To seek the truth and defend it always; To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, may I give graciously Of what is mine; To my friends, Understanding and appreciation; To those closer ones, Love that is ever steadfast; To my mind, Growth; To myself, Faith That I may walk truly In the light of the Flame. - Dororhy M. Williams - Alpha Zeta |
The Symphony of Alpha Xi Delta:
These things do we earnestly desire: A clear vision of life, that with gracious and kindly hearts we may share in both joy and sorrow, and bring into the living reality the sisterhood of women. An appreciation of real merit and worth; steadfastness of soul, and that without bitterness or defeat we may encounter misfortune, and with humility meet success. These things O lord help us to instill within our hearts, that we may grow in courage, graciousness and peace. |
Beta does not have what I would typically call a creed like other organizations do. It is not something that I think most chapters require new members to learn or remember, nor does it have quite the poetic nature of some of those that are listed here. But I'll give the Objects of the Fraternity (from the document of incorporation).
The Objects of Beta Theta Pi: Beta Theta Pi is formed for the purpose of the promotion of the moral and social culture of its members; the establishment of confidence and friendly relations between students of various colleges and universities; and the perpetuation of a fraternity that recognizes mutual assistance in the honorable labors and aspirations of life, unsullied friendship, unfaltering fideltity and the cultivation of the intellect as objects worthy of the highest aim and purposes of associated efforts. The Creed of Phi Beta Fraternity
We, the members of Phi Beta National Professional Fraternity for the Creative and Performing Arts, express reverence and love for these, the beautiful teachings of our fraternity. Our belief is that they will carry us to the final attainment of a life well lived and a goal honorably achieved. To promote the best in the creative and performing arts. We believe that it is given to each of us to be creative. All talents we possess have been given us that we may develop and use them for the preservation of the highest artistic standards. To live a life of service. There is great joy from working zealously at a genuinely worthwhile task. What we put into life-just that much is returned to us, and no more. To seek and develop the highest type of humanity. Herein we strive to look for the outward qualities which are the reflection of inner beauty, to keep constantly before us the attributes of love and sincerity, and to hold fast to Truth and the beautiful things of Life. |

And I shall do all in my power to perpetuate its ideals, thereby serving my god, my country, and my fellow man. |
Re: Sigma Nu and Phi Mu creeds very similar...
Quote:
Don't know about Phi Mu, but you should be checking with Alpha Xi Delta since Sigma Nu was instrumental in their founding in 1893 and they pulled things from the Sigma Nus! |
I've also always wanted to know about the similarities of Sigma Nu and Phi Mu... Does anyone know?
On a side note, we are paired with Sigma Nu for Greek Week and we couldn't be more excited! We can exemplify Love, Honor, Truth while we kick some tail! hehe |
Delta Gamma's Philosophy
Delta Gamma offers to women of all ages a rich heritage; continuity based on sound and tested principals of personal integrity, personal responsibility and intellectual honesty. Delta Gamma's primary purpose is to create an environment for its members in which lasting friendships are established and in which members find the processes, the experiences and the disciplines that will stimulate clear thought. Its aim is to foster an atmosphere in which women will develop a deeper love and consideration for mankind, a more profound understanding of the purpose of life and a basic wisdom upon which to build their lives.
Delta Gamma's purpose is accomplished through planned collegiate and alumnae programs that provide intellectual motivation, the opportunity for graciousness in daily living, and community awareness which will enrich the lives of members and instill in them a respect for the enduring values to be gained from the Fraternity. |

I have a framed copy of our creed among my other "awards":
The Creed of Alpha Delta Pi I BELIEVE in Alpha Delta Pi. I BELIEVE that my sorority is more than a ritual or a symbol; that it is a way of life. I BELIEVE that the principles established by our founders in 1851 are enduring attributes, exemplifying the highest ideals of Christian womanhood. I BELIEVE that our motto “We Live For Each Other,” expresses the true spirit of fraternity; and that by living this motto my life will be enriched by true friendships and by unselfish service to mankind. I BELIEVE that the privilege of membership in Alpha Delta Pi brings the responsibility to do my best in whatever I undertake, always remembering that leadership requires confidence tempered with humility and courage blended with tolerance. I BELIEVE that I must strive to become a well-balanced person by following the dictates of the four points symbolized by our diamond-shaped badge: first, strengthening my own character and personality; second, watching my attitudes toward my fellow-beings; third, recognizing the value of high educational standards; and fourth, developing faith and loyalty. I BELIEVE that these four guide-posts, guarded by the stars and friendly hands clasped in the Adelphean bonds of fellowship, will lead me to achieve a rich and useful life. -Caralee Strock Stanard I believe! :) honeychile |
