song lyrics explained

"Out of the night that covers me..."

Here it is, THE place to get your lyrical questions answered, not necessarily accurately, but hopefully very humourously ;), by the B+ and above minds that post on GC. Have a song lyric that you've always wondered about? Well, wonder no more! Post your questionable lyrics here & someone will (eventually) provide an explaination.

Question #1: What, exactly, is "Symphin' " and why ain't it easy?

"I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."

Goldknight 02-04-2003 08:05 AM

"sympin" is beggin.

skywalker20_99 02-04-2003 09:23 PM

Can someone please tell me exactly what a "wanksta" is? I am always bobbing my head with the song comes on the radio, but I'm not sure what it really means. I have an idea, but I've been wrong before.

CrimsonTide4 02-04-2003 09:24 PM

Mary and Rra

Ok, yall remember that song, "It's On," by Mary J. Blige and R. Kelly? WHO is Mary talking to in the song???

"I waited all my life
for you to come along
and make that joyful sacrifice
two kids a dog and a home
is a like dream come to life
WHEN I LOOK INTO YOUR DADDY'S EYES"

Is she talking to the kid? Cuz later she says, "All of my life I've waited to get next to you. And every night I pray that your love will come my way. And finally the time has come for us to meet."

"It's on tonight. It's about that we met. And it's about time, a love I won't forget."

W.I.T.H are they talking about???

I think R. Kelly wrote the song, and he forgot not everyone loves the kids. Mary probably just sung it and didn't pay attention to the words.

According to www.ohhla.com, someone who claims to have played to song backwards in order to verify the lyrics says that line is actually saying "I put my thing down, flip it, and reverse it" in reverse. Since I have no technology to play songs bakwards, I'll just take their word for it. :D

skywalker20_99 02-10-2003 07:43 PM

One song that drives me nuts is Toni Braxton's "I Love Me Some Him" off her second CD. I loved the song until I noticed the lyrics "you took the ease off my mind, and put it behind me". Maybe I'm listening to it the wrong way, but don't you want your mind to be eased? Wouldn't taking the ease off someone's mind be a negative thing?

That is what she's saying. MTV confirmed it the week her album came out. Unfortunately, the link is not up no more since they are not giving folks free access to her album.

Nadonna

In the song My Humps she says "Fendi and Nadonna" in one line. What is "Nadonna"? No its not Madonna, its Nadonna.
This is really bugging me

Don't feel bad, I had to listen to it a million times before I figured it out. She said:

"Dolce and Gabanna...Fendi and that Donna...Karan, they be sharin' all their money...":D

lyrics

LatinaAlumna 11-04-2007 07:13 PM

^Okay, now after seeing the lyrics, this song gets my vote for worst song of '07!!

Conskeeted7 11-05-2007 12:56 PM

wow, after reading the soldier boy lyrics, I'm really convinced that I should get in the music business. I just need to put a few words together and make up a few more, say them on top of a decent beat, and I've got a hit!

I have been saying this for years. I don't need a whole album, just one hit to pay off these student loans. :)

i'm gonna get my casio from my parents house this weekend. i'm sure hitting random keys over a pre-programmed beat will take me to the top of the charts.

Not only can you say anything over a beat, you can also have people repeating your lyrics not know what they mean.

Read the definition then read the lyrics again. I know y'all have seen/heard children singing this song and doing the dance. It's a dag on shame.

My school's internet line blocked the site. I'll take that as a sign. One of the little (white) girls I babysit learned this dance in her dance class. :( They call it "The Superman."

WOW That's a bit much

but funny as hell lol

LatinaAlumna 11-07-2007 02:18 AM

I wonder how many teachers would have participated in all these pep rallies, etc. ( shown on YouTube) if they knew what this song was about. :(

Conskeeted7 11-07-2007 02:09 PM

wow, that's just horrible!!!

But did you look at what some of the other lyrics meant? Nothing in that song is what it seems!

TotallyWicked 11-07-2007 02:18 PM

I shouldn't have spoken so loud to my coworkers about knowing what "Superman" means..one of the kids is demanding I tell em....urm I'm gonna have to leave that to the parents to take care of :o

LatinaAlumna 11-08-2007 01:38 AM

^Their parents probably don't know, if a bunch of us didn't know what it meant here! I had never heard of this in my life before I saw that Urban Dictionary link!

Conskeeted7 11-13-2007 11:27 AM

They were talking about this on the morning show here today. In the soldier boy song, if 'superman' means what it means, then does 'crank that' mean he is 'preparing himself to release' what is required for the superman? And if so, why are people watching him?

That's correct. And I have no idea maybe some people get down like that. I couldn't listen to the song after I found out what it meant.

Beyonce's Irreplaceable was just ridiculous. Every line just made her look more of a fool.

 I loved it. Especially the video. Though, it does make me a little upset that she spent so much money on him, everything he actually owns fits into a box.

But there are plenty of women out there who actually attempt to keep a man by purchasing things and paying bills for him. This to me is a great song and didn't or doesn't make her look like a fool. I liked the song personally.

Animate 11-25-2007 03:50 PM

I'm sorry but I really don't believe that those are the actual meaning of the lyrics to Soulja Boy's song. The song has been around a lot longer than most people realize but this "definition" just comes out once he gets a video. This little boy was a youtube SMASH for months, maybe even upwards of a year, before he got a deal.

1908Revelations 11-25-2007 08:56 PM

Ellen was doing Crank dat Solja Boy on her show last week. LOL

Aw, I missed it...she is hilarious! LOL:)
That song is stupid in my opinion, but watching ppl do the dance is entertainment...

LatinaAlumna 11-25-2007 09:38 PM

^It's everywhere. It's like the "macarena" of 2007. Next, we're going to see Dub-ya doing it.

From my understanding it's slang in some southern states.

song lyrics explained

 are they serious, i guess you really no longer have to have talent to write song anymore. It used to be a craft, does no one have any pride in their music anymore, but i guess when Aye baby becomes a number one smash no one cares anymore. I miss being young and listening to real music from the old school like the O'jays, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Luther. I know i'm only 25 but i would rather listen to classic R&B than todays Hip Hop crap that has no meaning to it, whatever happened to songs that made you cry, or feel better. Music is suppossed to send a message, now it's just selling, but hey when you droppin like it's hot i guees idon't really matter do it.:(
