Taking School Spirit to the Grave

:o I think I'll pass. Just make sure my Life Membership pin and my Pearls are with my body.

EagleChick19 01-30-2003 01:31 PM

Whoa! Taking school sprit a little too far?

They crazy

Y'all, I am not surprised that this article focuses on the Lexington, KY area. I went to college out there and Lexington is FANATICAL (borderline crazy) about UK (Univ. of KY). Its nausiating if you ask me. Everything has a sign in blue and white or the name Wildcat in it (Wildcat Laundry, Wildcat cleaners, Wildcat Funeral Home...ok, I just playing on the that one, but I wouldn't be surprised).

kiml122 01-30-2003 02:38 PM

Ok, I am definitely going to have to take a ZERO on this one.

What about that Dr. that is being sued for marking a woman's uterus with "UK". According to him he was "marking" it so he would know which direction it was in. WTF????

Sorors and friends,

a Soror from my chapter passed away last week and her casket had pink flowers on the outside and stitched to the satin on the inside. plus, she had other AKA items in with her. it was really nice and quite tasteful.

yasava 01-30-2003 09:01 PM

The guy who taught my Series 7 class was an U of MI alum, and he was decked out. Michigan leather jacket, watch, navy car with a license plate with the U of M symbol on it, even his cell played the fight song when it rang, and he made sure to bring U of M into his lesson at least once a day. I would not be surprised if the got a casket like this when he passed on...does anyone else know someone who would do that? I got love for my school, but it ain' that serious.

abaici 01-31-2003 01:59 AM

Lord knows, I love Spelman. But, I would NEVER want a Spelman themed casket. IT'S TACKY! It's seem more like a "clear people" thing to me.

Also, the doctor and the alma mater markings is disgusting. However, why were two of his patients on Good Morning America defending him. "When you get good doctors, we should support them" CRAZY!

lovelyivy84 01-31-2003 02:11 AM

I can't really see anyone of my generation buyingone of those things.

Well now that I think about it I can't think of the old blue generation getting that either. Those old Yalies are far too "well bred" for something as commercial as that. Muffy and Babs (the 60 year old second wives who used to be trophies) would be horrified.

LB1914 01-31-2003 08:10 PM

I couldn't picture anyone from Southern getting a casket, but I bet the LSU ones would sell like hotcakes.

Sistermadly 02-02-2003 12:59 PM

I visited the website of the casket company a few months ago, and they make caskets for HBCUs as well (I remember seeing a Morehouse and Spelman one).

College was one of the best times of my life but DANG, I don't think I want to take it that far. ;)

AKA2D '91 02-02-2003 01:34 PM

Where are you from?

Uhhhhhh, I don' t think you know the peeps from Baton Rouge too well, do you? I bet they would, then when you read their obituary you will NOT find that they received ANY degree from SU-BR, SUNO, or SU-S/B.

:o

LMAO!

LB1914 02-02-2003 04:02 PM

I hear what you are saying. I, like many other actual Southern GRADUATES wouldn't get one, but I am sure some Scotlandville residents would. I was speaking only about my fellow alumni, not the locals.

By the way, I am a second-generation graduate of Southern University and A&M College. My wife was born and raised in Baton Rouge and is an LSU grad. Personally, I make a clear distinction between those of us that attended SU and those that just live in the area. All in all, I feel that I know the people in Baton Rouge pretty well, but I don't lump them in with SU and LSU students/alumni in terms of behavior, customs, and the like. My original statement only included Southern alumni and current students, not someone who lives on Avenue C and just goes to games.

I got you one generation beat. I'm a third-generation graduate :o did I actually ACKNOWLEDGE THAT!?!!? :o Anyway, there are some who have graduated from SU that would probably purchase that casket (if they knew it was available). I am from the Big Raggedy as well.

Some of those folks from "The Field" are graduates too. :p

:D

I can't believe Knowledge Eternal just posted that......

I bet I know a few old head alumna from Spelman that would buy it. I don't know how connected you are to Atlanta alumna abaici, but I could see Miss Minnie (God rest her soul!) or Miss Simon buying one of them! LOL

I'm in Los Angeles, and I'm semi-connected to our alumnae chapter (financially support, and occasional appearance). However, I have noticed that "old heads" can take it there sometimes (thinking about my older sorors who rock the AKA tennis shoes, vest, and what not). But, I would never call them tacky if they did it. I feel that older people can do whatever they want without comment from me. They EARNED it!

*** No offense to any sorors who own the aforementioned 'nalia***
