I don't know if this is lewd, but when ATO had a Hawaiian themed party their slogan was: "Come get leid!" Like... get a Hawaiian lei...

I think I may have spelled "lei" wrong.

XOXO,
Annie.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can get away with cutesy luau themed parties. I cringe everytime I see themes like "Come get lei'd" because it really is a mockery of a culture, one that people have no problem commercializing.

I'm sure someone would make a big stink if a GLO threw a "Pow-wow" themed party poking fun at Native Americans. I just don't understand how come it's okay to throw a luau where Hawaiian punch is served with plastic leis and grass skirts--there's nothing Hawaiian in those things.

This post isn't meant to offend, just something to think about. :)

If you'll pardon the thread crash, OTW's post gave me an idea.

I wish I had a specific slogan, but given the previous post, about cultural sensitivity in this day and age, it may be better to go straight to the source on Hawaiian slogans, sayings, etc.

I went to a large enough university where there was a Hawaiian/Polynesian student cultural organization on campus. If there is one in your area, perhaps they could help you out with a slogan or theme that is not only appropriate, but a true celebration of the culture, without risking being offensive in some way.

I'm sorry I don't have more to offer on this one, but I hope the idea helps.

Okay, but nobody here is "poking fun" at Hawaiians. Sorry, we can't throw a geniune Hawaiian luau because for example, we dont' have enough money for leis that are made of geniune Hawaiian flowers and so we're making due as best as we can.

Amazing how you can find plastic leis derogatory but not Shaq's mockery of the Chinese language. There's something to roll your eyes over.

XOXO,
Annie.

Gotta agree with ya, TeenyWahine... back in my days as an undergrad (when dinosaurs ruled the earth :D) it wasn't unusual for theme parties to have backhanded mockeries of certain cultural groups. (Kamanawanaleiu punch -- yeah, right... gimme a f*ckin' break!) I've had the opportunity of partaking in a Hawaiian luau and learning Hawaiian customs from a former friend and co-worker when I was living in California, and suffice it to say it's nowhere near the sterotypes that abound.

Being part-Hispanic (and part Noo Yawk Irish as well), it gets me annoyed when we're all lumped into the stereotypical idea of Latin American culture, where the siesta is king (maņana is good enough for me) and all the music is Mexican mariachi.

I said it in that thread, and I'll say it again...Shaq's an idiot. Idiot comments like that are expected. I don't agree with what he said because what he said wasn't right, IT JUST DIDN'T BOTHER ME AS MUCH AS IT BOTHERED YOU.    <---I'll roll my eyes to that.

In this day and age where GLOs are supposed to embrace diversity and celebrate other cultures, I find it odd that most would continue to do luau themed parties. adduncan did bring up a great idea by consulting Hawaii Clubs in your area. I'm sure they'd be a great resource for ideas that all can enjoy.

If anyone's interested, here's a link to a story about a luau controversy at Dartmouth, which happened a few years back. I know that most luau parties are not meant to be controversial, but it offends more people than you could imagine.

Shark in skirt, keep on insulting my opinions if you wish. I don't expect you to agree with me either. I just wanted to make sure that others were aware of this.

This will be my last post on the subject as I've already made it known how I feel about it. Rather than let this escalate into an all-out bitchfest just like the other threads, I'll let the discussion continue without further interruption from me.

Have a nice day. :)

ZTA and ATO at Stetson, traditionally, have had a social at the begining of every year called KAMANAWANNALAYA :)

SATX*APhi 01-28-2003 12:44 PM

I threw a party this past weekend which had a luau theme and tried forever coming up with a cute slogan for the flyers. The only thing I could come up with is "Nobody goes home without getting leid!" I know you didn't want anything "dirty" but I thought I'd share that for others.

SATX*APhi 01-28-2003 12:44 PM

I am having a Mardi Gras bash in a few weeks and wanted to know if anybody had any Mardi Gras slogans. I am having the hardest of times! HELP! :D

thetakates 01-28-2003 04:02 PM

Call it a beach party. And make the slogan Fun in the sun.

chideltjen 01-28-2003 04:18 PM

What an incredibly PC thing to call it!

delta tau delta at university of florida did something ignorant to that extent with the name "Mekong Delta." the frat boys dressed up like GI's and the sorority girls dressed up like vietnamese hookers. the asian community wasn't too pleased when that happened. i guess that's the same as poking fun at japanese.

funny, but i highly doubt that the party will celebrate the culture instead of just commercialize it and mock it. i doubt the polynesian community would really take kindly to being asked that.

SigkapAlumWSU 01-28-2003 04:58 PM

We had a luau/beach date function last year and the backs of the shirts had a picture of a palm tree. Underneath it said "We have our date, we have our lei, lets dance the night away" It was pretty cute, and everone got a plastic lei when they came in. We also ordered straw hats, and it was really cute..

It was a suggestion, and a sincere one. Not a declaration of war.

I think I'll stay out of any "multicultural" discussions from this point on. The hostility is unwarranted and life is too short.

nah, no offense taken. just a statement, i don't think i'd like it if a frat come up to my organization (the Filipino group, not my fraternity) saying they were throwing a rice (or something along those lines) party.

Little E 01-28-2003 05:43 PM

a tradition here used to be Kamanawannaleiya (sp?) the local and sig chi revived it last year and no one was offended. We also had a luau around then too (yes we actually have a huge hawaiian population here) Keep it tasteful and have fun, just don't be tacky. and if someone will be offended, back down. there is nothing wrong with a beach party.

texasaopi 01-28-2003 07:38 PM

We had a "Tiki Torch Bash" a couple of years ago...best mixer I ever went to!

SIUAPHI 01-30-2003 03:42 AM

Our best Luau slogan was "If you dont find love, at least you'll get leid"

Blue Violet 02-04-2003 08:38 PM

Have it be a camp out

and have the slogan say: Pitch a tent and get leied.

And by the way, political correctness is just that-political. This is America and last I checked, even if it was offensive, I still have the RIGHT to say it. I am TOTALLY offended by the idiots that posted about the pimps & hos party and the porn star parties several posts ago, but you know what-I just don't attend those that offend me. I will fight to the death for the right of those idiots to say it & have it however.

Everybody Wang Chung Tonight!

PhiMuJulia 02-12-2003 10:55 PM

we had one of those and our theme was like those Visa adds, I can't remeber it quite, but:
keg of beer $50
hawaian flower dress $30
...
Getting laid by Phi Mu, Priceless

Pasta162 07-19-2004 01:25 AM

At Sam Houston State we have a year end Beach party called the "Big Bamboo Bash" and this year i made the shirts. It was a Survivor logo which i replaced Survivor with Big bamboo bash and the outlast, out wit, out play, with Out party, out drink, pass out. We always have a good time with it to end the year.

that can be said for anything..i suppose..

BabyP 07-20-2004 08:41 PM

i did a search on your colors: you could call it Scarlet & Green hawaii (and have fake flowers that are scarlet and green) alot of hawaiian flowers are like that especially birds of paradise, etc, or Blue Hawaii (and play some elvis music). Let's Go Hawaii sounds good.....I am not pleased with the "get leid" thing

CarolinaCutie 07-20-2004 08:44 PM

You could do "Alpha Chis in Paradise" and have a sort of Jimmy Buffett theme. Or "Sunset Bash", and have it based on a tropical sunset type thing. Or "Deserted Island"... there's lots of things you can do that have a tropical, beachy feel to them without specifically being raunchy or having a luau theme.

xppyro 10-17-2004 04:20 PM

we have a luau every year, and this year our slogan was "as close to paradise as it gets" or something like that.

PinkChief 07-23-2008 01:12 PM

does anyone have a good luau slogan for bid day. I'm thinking

ALOHA PHI MU.....might as well be paradise.

or something

NO.

CrackerBarrel 07-23-2008 04:23 PM

I dunno, but Buffett had an album titled "White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" which it seems like you could do something with since it's your colors and (if I'm not mistaken) a pink carnation is your flower. Carnation and crustacean sound a whole lot a like, play around with that idea maybe.

CrackerBarrel 07-23-2008 04:36 PM

Mk, been tossing that idea around in my head.

Can you make the theme more Buffett and less luau?

If so the slogan is "A White Bid Card and a Pink Carnation" with maybe "Phi Mu Girl in Paradise" under the graphic (something tropical, parrot with a bid card in it's beak standing on a pink carnation stem or a margarita glass with a pink carnation in it maybe) on the t-shirt or something. And serve shrimp and virgin margaritas.
