How to fix cold room
Hey does anyone know how to fix a cold room? My room is probably 10 degrees colder than any other room here.
I've insulated the windows with plastic. I even weather stripped the leaky areas that might let wind in. But it's still damn cold. The walls around the window are cold so maybe insulation isn't that great. But I can't do major construction to fix that and I doubt the landlord would pay for it. So what the hell do I do short of buying a space heater or raising the heat? -Rudey --For the frigging rent they charge, you'd think I wouldn't have to worry about this crap. |
I'd go with the space heater, but don't be careless with your usage of it. Those little suckers can really drive up your electricity bill.
|
If electricity is covered in rent, I'd say grab the space heater. I am trying to harass Mr. Munchkin into getting one for his place in addition to the heater.
|
Space heaters are great, but yes, they do use up a lot of electricity. I'm subletting from my friend and staying in his room over break, but it is kind of cold. I got a small space heater and it warms up the room after several minutes. The only thing is that when I plug it in, the light in the room gets dimmer each time I turn the heater up.

Isn't a cold room a sign that there's paranormal activity taking place there?
|
I see dead people. :D

You know, like ghosts, goblins...that sort of thing! Silly :p |
Da Rudolfo, get a Zippo! Light it and use as heat and a night light:D
Wear flannels, long johns, the ones with the trap doors, red of course!:) Ah have you ever tried sex? Gets hot, but warms up the bed, well from what I hear!:D |
I bought a space heater. Another great thing...and this sounds so "old person-like" is to buy a heated blanket. My sister complains about her bedroom all the time, but with her new heated blanket she's stopped.
So those are my ideas. Also check to see how much heat is actually coming out of the vents. I found out that my vents were releasing colder air...so the landlord or someone needs to come check it out. Good luck! |
Call your lanlord. There might be some type of repair that could alleviate this problem. One the other hand, my apartment is about 80 degrees. The problem is the heating system which cannot be fixed.
|
When everyone is out, go through the apartment and cut down their vents....;)
Really, check ALL the vents and you may find some that are going into closets or other useless spaces. By adjusting them just a bit, you can redirect more heat to another room. I you face the north or east, you will most likely still feel a chill. |
You need to have more sex. ;)
|
What floor are you on? Heat rises, and sometimes those on the second floor or higher are a little hotter than other floors. If it's the first, it just might be the way things are at your place. If you're on the 4th, I'd contact the landlord.

Okay, I'll give a serious answer now. ;)
I had the same problem in a Chicago apartment years ago. Actually, the whole front half of the apartment was freezing, including my bedroom, even after putting all that darn plastic stuff over the windows. The landlord was too cheap to do anything about it, so I did resort to using a space heater. As long as you never leave it on when you're not around, I don't think it would be a problem, and I think it probably is one of the least expensive options. I really don't know what other options you have. You could get a cat -- they're warm! ;) |

About space heaters-
If you use one, just be sure "feel" around the outlet from time to time. Many use a lot of electricity and in an apartment with old wiring, it can over laod it to the point where it can "blow". |
You raise a good point Justamom! I feel my cord by the outlet often and find that it's hot. So I'll shut off my space heater or turn the thermostat on it down so that it's not running ALL THE TIME. The nice thing is if you're hardly at home you're not running up a huge bill by keeping your furnace running. Plus you can centralize the space heater so it's heating up just the room you're in for the time being.
Another helpful hint. At night I shut my bedroom door so the heat isn't escaping the room. During the day I'll shut the bathroom and bedroom door so it's not flowing into those rooms while its (the heater) is in the livingroom. Hopefully this winter won't be terrible or last too long. Maybe here in a few weeks the Groundhog won't see his shadow and we'll have Spring early (Now that's a wishful thought)! |
I thought this was a serious answer!
Having a girl stay the nights is a nice cheap "space heater" as long as you both sleep nude. On second thoughts girls can run into serious money, so you may want to do a cost benefit analysis of girls vs. Extra heat. Although the girl comes with fringe benefits . . . and also liabilities. There may be more economy versions of girls also . . sorry I am beginning to get carried away by my analogy :) Quote:

Anyhow... um... well my house (rented) is really cold too- my room inparticular because it's on the first floor and my bed is right next to the window. I'm also really cold-natured which doesn't help any. I wear thick, warm slipper-socks to bed most nights as well as two layers of clothes & a big comfy sweater. Sometimes I even have to sleep with a hot water bottle. I'm scared of space heaters b/c last time I used one of those it started sparking & I was afraid it would catch the house on fire! If you use one of those, make sure it's up on a table or stool- don't set it on the carpet. |
Actually . . . you will sleep warmer if you sleep under covers with no clothes on. It has something to do with body heat . . .
But Hootie's idea of using an electric blanket is really good. Quote:
