What are you afraid of?
I went to a surgeon yesterday to discuss how to get rid of a hernia I have, and the only way that I can is to get surgery. Well, as the doctor is describing my surgery, I almost passed out! My blood pressure was like 80 over 100 when the checked it. So it turns out I'm afraid of surgery.
Another thing that bothers me is being on ladders. I don't have a problem with flying or being on my roof or bungee jumping, so it's not the height thing, just being on a ladder. What are some of yours? |
Heights and car accidents are my top two, but I'm not too keen on slimy animals, either.
|
There was another thread like this a couple of years ago and I was surprised to discover the many people are afraid of clowns! I had no idea! And I asked my kids about it and several of them revealed that they're afraid of clowns because of some movie they sneaked and watched one night...and that for a year, they've been afraid that clowns would come out of our woods to come get them!
And they never told us because they'd sneaked out of bed to watch the movie! |
I hate clowns! I'm not afraid of them and I didn't have a problem with them till I became an adult (haha, it's funny to call myself that!) My problem with them is that they are adults who like to hang around children, but only when they are in baggy clothes with their face painted so you can't recognize them. Total pediphile tendencies! I figured this out on one of those long philosophical nights that my friends and I took part in in college.
My biggest fear is disappointing those close to me. My parents never had to yell at me when I did something wrong. Just had to say "We're so disappointed in you." |
I am terrified of bees and wasps. Also, after a near death experience of getting caught under a huge overturned blow-up raft when I was like 12, I have a fear of drowning.
Side note: I, too, dislike clowns (I think it stems from watching Stephen King's "It" as a child) but I wouldn't say I am afraid of them. |
i'm afriad of heights, clowns, snakes, spiders, and my biggest fear is of falling. i think the fear of falling is why i'm so afraid of heights. i couldn't even look out my door room window last year. it was too high and i was afraid i would fall out.
*edited to add* I'm also really realyl afraid of needles. I still cry at the doctor's office whenever i have to get a shot or get blood drawn. |
I'm afraid of closed-in spaces -- I'm claustrophobic.
I'm also afraid of doctors, dentists, and flying. I'm not afraid of clowns, but I do hate them. They're creepy! |
I am terrified of snakes!!!! So scared of them that in Harry Potter (both I and II) I had to hide behind my hands and boyfriend to finish watching the movie!!!! But, my boyfriend has a snake (mr. icky is what I call it) and he is helping me overcome my fear.
I am also afraid of needles. Not piercing needles or tattoo needles, but doctor/medicine needles. I have a tendancy to pass out whenever one approaches me! Here's a question...what would be the worse way for you to die? I am scared of suffocating to death. |
I am terrified of needles. We are talking people have to hold me down to give me a shot. Earlier this year, I passed out and had to have an ambulance come and my friend told me that I tried to fight the 250 lb paramedic trying to draw my blood and he ended up shooting me with a sedative and strapping me down in the ambulance. (BTW, I got bloodowrk done yesterday. . . very bad). I am also kind of scared of heights. Not so much the height part but if I have to jump off of something high like on a ropes course or something, I flip out.
|
I am TERRIFIED of milipeedes and centipeedes. I FREAK OUT and start crying and screeming if I see one...even on TV or something.
|
Irrational, but I have a fear of bugs flying into my hair. I don't know where it came from, but if I'm ever walking down the street and see those swarms of little gnat-like things that hover around during the summer, I cross the street. :)
|
Iam not afraid of anything!
But do worry about some things! Why, did not think would get past 32! Well blew by that long time ago! Been Shot, cut, dog bite, light poled, other scars from different things, seven cars demolished out from under me, 3 being police cars. Really dont like snakes, shoot them, spiders, smash them, guys who want to hold me up, mace them, people who drive on the road, besides me!:D Clowns, I guess you dont like me as I are one!:D |
I am absolutely PETRIFIED of birds, especially big ones like Ostriches....I mean, have you ever really LOOKED CLOSELY at a bird? They're ugly, and just overall frightening and creepy. Watching them fly FAR AWAY is okay, it's actually beautiful, but when they're nearby I get all shaky and nervous. I sat in my car for 45 minutes one day because there was a HUGE seagull wandering around the parking lot REALLY close to my car. I eventually rolled down the window and asked the lady getting out of the car next to me to shoo the bird away because I was afraid and wouldn't get out.
Ya'll know that scene in "Dude, Where's My Car?" when the 2 guys are in the car on the ostrich farm? I cried when the ostrich bursts through the roof and they're all in the windows. My friends just laughed at me, but it was like my WORST nightmare coming true! I would kill myself if I was ever trapped in a room w/ a loose bird...! I sound really silly but hey, they creep me out. |
i used to hate needles to the point that i kicked a pregnant nurse one time when i was a kid cuz she was trying to draw blood. i forced myself to get over it by donating blood. i pretty much cried when it first started, but calmed down afterwards and have since donated on multiple occasions.
other things i hate or are afraid of: roaches - and other most insects clowns - creep me out the ocean - the deep parts, started hyperventalating when i tried to go snorkeling one time. combination fear of what's below me and the chance of drowning. i think that's about it for now. i know i'll probably think of a few more later. shelley j sigma k |

A guy on a local radio station likes to make prank calls. One day they did one where a guy was pretending to be buried alive; he said he had fallen asleep in a casket (not sure how that happens) and he was accidentally buried. He was calling someone from his cell phone asking them to come get him out of some cemetery. I know it was *supposed* to be funny, but just the thought of it had me freaked out. Eeeek. |
Flying kamikaze cockroaches. Those things are brutal and nasty.
|
Guys, the fear of needles will probably pass. Really. I was the number one needlephobic of all times and the worst part was that my dad was a doctor. Let's just say that the family can tell many stories about what all I did to people who were trying to give me shots many years ago.
But you know how psychologists attempt to rid people of their fears by gradually exposing them to bigger and bigger doses of them (aversion therapy, I think)? When you have a baby, you have blood taken several times and then there's the epidural...after a few babies, I was cured. And even if you don't have babies, you just end up having blood drawn more and more, the older you get. Employment physicals, pre-surgery physicals, that kind of thing. I know lots of young people who are petrified of needles but no middle-aged people or older. |
Well, I still cry if I have to have blood drawn, and I'm probably lots older than the average member here. It almost always hurts me.
I am really afraid of frogs. I don't know why, but they just gross me out. I have a fear of being closed up in a small space. I even have weird dreams of having to crawl through some small squeezy space and I wake up in a panic attack. |

I'm afraid of insects & arachnids (basicly anything with more than four legs), snakes, and being alone.
|
Clowns--I hate them!!!! They are creepy--I totally avoid clowns in public (like grand openings and things)--my husband thinks it is funny--he will find some reason to make me walk by the creepy things!!!!
As far as other fears---I don't like being held down--I panic!!! This is not a frequent thing--but if I am laying on the bed being a smartass to my husband--he always holds down my shoulders, where I am unable to sit up. He often starts tickling me at that point--but I panic!!! I get to the point that I start hyperventalating (sp?) and just about black out!!! -wendi |
I'm afraid of creepy crawlers but my fear has decreased somewhat...when I see one, I just repeat to myself, "I am way bigger than you, I am way bigger than you."
I am terrified of sharks. Granted, I don't swim way out into the ocean but I do go up to where it's comfortable enough for me to still stand and you never know when a shark's going to come. |
I absolutely hate snakes!!! I even have dreams that they are hunting me down to bite me. Even when I see them on TV I cringe.
I am afraid of living life alone. I am also deathly afraid of needles. Everyone says that fear will pass but I still cry to this day when I have to have a shot. And because of this fear I can't even fathom the amount of needles I will need if I ever have children some day. |

One of my friends is scared of birds too...so you're not alone. To make matters worse, one time we were at the beach and a bird crapped in her eye from above. Needless to say, she freaked out. Well, I would too I guess if anything crapped in my eye. Haha. My biggest fears include dying, spiders, bees...heck any big insect for that matter. I always act like a baby when I have to kill a bug because I'm scared of it. I used to be afraid of heights, but I think that fear has subsided. It used to be a lot worse when I was younger. I think the worst way to die would have to be in a fire. Remember that episode of Beverly Hills 90210 when Kelly and that other girl were stuck in the fire. That would have to be the worst way to die because you can see the fire coming but there's no way out. So it's like you're awaiting your death knowing that you can't do anything about it. |
I hate big spiders but little ones don't bother me too much. I also am afraid of centipedes and millipedes, and slugs and snails really gross me out!
I'm not really very claustrophobic, because I can deal with being in a small room or whatever, but I really start to panic if I'm in a big crowd of people. Like one night I was out with a bunch of people and we were in one of those circular booths at a restaurant. Well somehow I got stuck all the way in the middle so that there were 3 to 5 people on either side of me. Plus there were chairs pulled up so that the space on the other side of the table was also taken up. I started freaking out so bad that I totally lost my appetite, but I was trying not to make it obvious to everyone else that I was so freaked out, because I know it's a really irrational fear! My dad once tried to teach me how to change the oil in my car but I can't do it because I CAN'T get under the car to change the filter! I'm such a dork :) |
I beg to differ with everyone who says that the fear of needles goes away over time. I am DEATHLY afraid of needles. Over the past year or so, I have been hospitalized roughly eight times for complications with my kidney, which was eventually removed this past summer. I have been poked and prodded more times than probably anyone else on this site, and let me tell you, the fear gets worse EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Heh, one time I had a severe kidney infection, and I was seriously in the worst pain I've ever been in, in my life. So we go to the hospital and they wanted to give me a pain shot. Even thought I knew I would feel a million times better afterwards, I wouldn't let them give it to me. They had to get three nurses to hold me down so they could administer it. To get my mind off the shot, I started singing "Roxanne" by the Police at the top of my lungs. I was in the far back room, and you could hear me throughout the ENTIRE office. No one had any idea what was going on...a couple of the doctors even came in to see what was going on. I even freaked out a bunch of old people sitting in the waiting room. It was great. It's become one of the most-told stories in the urology department. |

I'm a big old freaking 'fraidy cat...LOL.
What is it with clowns??? I hate them, too. Mine stems from the movie "It", the first scary movie I watched. We went to the circus a few weeks later (I was like 12 or 13 at the time) and I made my dad take me home, I was spazzing so badly. My roommate in college used to hide this clown doll in my bed to freak me out. Bitch :) I'm also scared of alligators (sorry UF fans!). The parts in Jackass the Movie with alligators had me burying my face in my bf's arm. Seriously, I fear losing my mother or anyone else I love. My bf lost his mother to breast cancer a year ago, and after watching what he and his family have gone through, I can't even begin to imagine how I would handle it. |

;) Bet you're wrong about the poking and prodding-- I've been pregnant nine times! Remember, some of us are a ton older than you! But I agree--"Roxanne" was great! |
Carnation, NINE TIMES?
I am agast and scared at the same time! Damn, off subject, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn movie on, when movie Stars Were Stars. Hungry as heck, pork chops, and mash taters and country gravey for dinner tonight, Olives for the Libido on the side! Oh, Pookey, Pookey!:D |

Funny story. When UK was playing UF in Lexington my then best friend, now boyfriend, thought it would be funny to have the gator mascot wave at me. So when I walked into Commonwealth Stadium there I saw Nick with this huge alligator mascot waving at me. I was so scared it was going to run after me. So I took off running out on the field. To make matters worse, I'm in the UK Marching Band. So not only was I running around like an idiot, but I was doing so in a marching band uniform and my clarinet. Probably one of the most embarassing moments I've had since I was at college. I felt so stupid. |
My list could go on forever but here are just some of my fears:
-The dark -Spiders -Heights -Small spaces -Stalkers -Water -Needles -Knives -Guns -SNAKES!!! -Clowns!!! -Grass (it always makes me itch so I stay as far away from it as possible) -Stairs (I always think I am going to fall down them, which I usually do too, b/c I'm so klutzy) I have lots more, but I'll end the list now, because otherwise I'll be typing all night long. ;) |
Living in country, you are in nature, so like snakes, I'm not bother by them, spiders are okay to look at BUT if they crawl or jump on me, I would freak out.
-And bees, wasps, bubble bee (those things are huge), I don't like them. -Oh these big ass flying beetles are the baseball park at night. -I guess big bugs in general that fly or crawl near me -Fear of not finding someone to love (ie boyfriend/husband) and grow old with. I don't wanna be the old lonely woman with 15 cats :( |
i live in the country too, but i still haven't quite gotten used to the bugs. good lord they have some odd bugs in the country. i've had every bug, snake, and small furry woodland creature known in my house at some point.

I'm afraid of falling backwards- stems from when I was taking gymnastics and learning how to do backhandsprings. The instructor dropped me, and I stoved my neck. I'm terrified to do that kind of thing now. :(
And I'm afraid of being held down.....don't know where that comes from but I get so paranoid that I'll be smothered or something. Ooohh....!!!! And warts!!!!!! *shivers* It's because in kindergarten I always had to hold hands with the "bad kid" in class and his hands were covered in them. Really, really, really bad....... |
I hate to admit this..but I'm freaked out completely by birds and by monkeys. Those creatures are just nasty...*gags*
I almost conquered my fear on bired though....I ran over a crow a few weeks ago...lol |
WELL, I finally remembered a fear!
I hate heights and the fear of falling! I flew for 6 years everyother other week! Went to the top of The Empire State Building and Sears Towers. Just to prove that I could do it! Try the St. louis Arch, damn what a ride and sight that was looking down swaying in the wind! Hate to admit it but cant climb over the eaves of the house! Damn I hate that!:o Ah well, part of getting older I guess! It to all comes to pass!:( |
Flying (that includes crashing, hijackings, terrorists, etc)
Death Disappointing the people I love Lizards (this is a biggie for my mom and me. If one gets in the house, we 1.) freak 2.) spray it with any and every available chemical 3.) beat it to death with the broom (we broke our broom once doing this) 4.) after it is dead, freak again. I hate lizards so much! They hang out by our back door during the summer...we also have a lot of Geckos *shudder* NOTHING should have clear skin like that...when we see 'em we get our keys in hand and make a run for the door, praying they don't decide to jump on us!) |
I don't really have objects of which I am afraid, rather thoughts.
This is going to sound odd, but I am afraid of settling, especially in relationship to my career. Am I compromising myself and my abilities to do something I know I can do, rather than risking to do that which I want to do? Do I just do what I am good at or do something that I would love to do? Am I not living up to my potential? |
