GC Resolution Support Group
So, from what I've been reading, the general consensus by various "experts" is that in trying to make any life change, you need support and accountability. Seeing as I spend way too much time on here as it is, I thought we could get a thread going for anyone trying to do any type of self-improvement so we can all support each other (and bitch when we need to).
I'm personally trying to lose weight. I've lost 95 or so pounds over the last year and could probably stand to lose another 20 or so. After a year of counting every calorie, I'm getting pretty sick of it, but if I can do it for 2 more months, I should be fine. The hardest part is accepting that I'm never going to be one of those people who can eat whatever they want without gaining weight (like my little sister...grr..). I'm going to have to watch what I eat for the rest of my life. But, while I was happy when I was heavier, I'm a lot happier now and would never want to go back. I just have to stay away from the vending machine at work and actually get up and exercise before work and not hit the snooze 20 times. My goal is to be in a super-cute bikini by May when I'm going to Vegas and not scare small children with my beer gut. :) Anyone else? |
Congrats on your weight loss! :)
I'm also working on losing weight - my goal is to lose one dress size. For me, this means eating right, drinking lots of water, and exercising regularly. |
You go girls!! I too am trying to lose weight-mainly because I want to look good in my wedding dress, but also because I had a revelation: one day, when I'm older, I am going to look back and regret all the times I sat on the couch instead of going running, and not utilizing the strength I had in my youth. So, I've vowed to become healthy and strong, because I won't always be!
|
You two definitely sound like you're on the right path! I used to exercise all the time last year - I only had class two days a week and worked those same days, so I had a TON of free time (and a house full of girls to work out with). Now that I'm working 40+ hours a week at a real job, it's much harder to find time and/or enough motivation to work out. I bought a treadmill though, so now I have no excuse, and I've been going skiing once a week which is a ton of fun and lots of work! Keep me updated on your progress, I know you'll kick that extra weight to the curb in no time! :)
|
True, not only do you need to publicly confess a goal, but you have to be accountable day to day for it to work.
Especially something like weight loss which is an issue of day to day integrity. |
I've never tried to seriously lose weight before. I knew I always needed to, but I was actually okay with myself until I moved to a place where few women are over a size 10, never mind a size 14. I've been doing Weight Watchers since June of 2002, and I've lost 82 lbs since then. It might not be the fast way to do it, but it's healthy, and I feel like at this rate I'm likely to keep the weight off longer. I still have a L-O-N-G way to go, but I'm confident I'll finally get to my goal sometime in late 2003.
I've also become somewhat of a gym junkie. I do total body conditioning classes (think "The Firm") supplemented with free weights. I look a size or two smaller than my weight would indicate becuase the weights have helped trim my silhouette. So if you're looking to tone up and look "tight" in time for bikini season, hit the weights. You'll see an amazing difference in about a month or so. AXOLiz - I understand what you mean about finding time to work out when you work so much. Here's one thing I do to try to get a little extra exercise in each day. Instead of taking the elevator, I take the stairs. I even take them two at a time, just to increase the burn a little bit. It's not the most ladylike thing in the world, but it's an easy way to firm the backs of your thighs and rear... if you need that sort of thing. :) |
..
I'm so impressed by you girls! What an awesome goal, losing weight and staying healthy!! Congrats on everyone's weight loss! And AXOLiz, just two months....you can so do this! Look how long you've been dieting and staying healthy. I"m so impressed.
I did Weight Watchers too. I was so healthy while I was on it and I lost my 12lbs. Which I tend to gain, lose, gain, lose. Unfortunatley I've gained it back. But you girls got me excited again. Okay, we need to have weekly reports on how we're doing. I need to get back to Weight Watchers and doing Pilates!! Good luck! |
my update
I made it through the weekend without eating *too* much, but it was a lot more than I should have. But I'm not going to get too worked up about it and I'm back on my diet today. I stocked up on Lean Cuisines when they were on sale, so now I have no excuse. I've found that when I'm hungry, I'll pretty much eat whatever's in front of me that I can make quickly. So if I have healthy stuff that I can just heat up and eat, I don't even want the unhealthy stuff. I just have to throw away all the leftover cookies and everything from the holidays.
My big accomplishment for this weekend was making it through the Browns game without drinking. Not only did I prove that I can go a whole game without giving in and drinking (since the key to finally being able to lose weight for me was giving up alcohol), but it ended up being a good thing because I was interviewed by a guy from the AP and didn't go off on a tirade and cause another ruckus like Browns fans tend to do. Damn Pittsburgh. So give us your updates. If I'm making it through the post playoff loss depression, I'm sure all of you are doing well too. :) |
...
Aww.....I"m a Browns fan too. B/c of Tim Couch ( UK!! )!! Well, mom finally threw away the brownies my best friend made for me. So no more of them for me. Now, I must get motivated to do some cardio and some pilates this week. Going back to school next week is going to be the challenge!
|
This thread is working! I came home from work about an hour ago, thinking "I'm sooo tired..." I saw this thread and decided I really ought to go exercise - so I did! :D
I haven't worked out in several weeks, so I'm trying to ease back into it... just a light workout today... but it shouldn't be too long before I'm back into my routine. :) |
its not so much a new years resolution.. but...
after showing new years eve pictures to someone, their response made me realize i have decided that it is time for me to go on a diet. i am not used to weighing over 110lbs, i never really had until this year. being so busy i can only work out 3 or 4 times a week... so i am up to about 125... i have been eating only weight watchers meals, rice chex w/ banana for breakfast, and an occaisonal coffee.. it is seriously almost killing me. i love food! that is such a problem. why is food such a crutch?? arg. well that made no sense but i wanted to share. :) i'm thinking of getting slimfast shakes, anyone have any thoughts on them? |
I did the slimfast shake thing for a while and I found they left me way too hungry. Their meal on the go bars (or whatever they call them) are ok though. They have more substance than a cereal/granola bar and are better than grabbing fast food if you don't have time to eat real food. I'd try a couple individual ones before you buy the whole box though - some are wayyyyyy too sweet for me, but my sister loves those and hates the ones I like. So who knows. :)
It sounds like your diet has you bored already...for me, I could stick with a boring diet as long as I could "cheat" sometimes. I just found better ways to cheat...like sugar free popsicles or pudding when I wanted something sweet, Subway instead of McDonald's, etc. And if you absolutely want something god-awful for you, have it, but don't have a ton of it or work out a little more. If you feel like you're missing out by sticking to your diet, you'll be more likely to go off it. Like I said before...the key for me personally was giving up alcohol, but it wasn't just giving it up, it was really 100% believing that I wasn't missing out by not drinking. Do what you can to make sure you don't feel like you're missing out and you'll lose the weight. I know I sound like an afterschool special here, but once you start losing the weight, it'll be so much easier to stick to a diet. I loooooove food, but I love fitting into my new clothes more. When you see results, it's much easier to stay motivated. And I've turned into a crazy calorie counter, but I swear, when you see how much you'd have to work out to burn off some of this stuff, it's just not worth it. UKDaisy - a sidenote here...Couch may be out of Cleveland next year. With the salary cap, we're going to have to make some changes and he's making a hell of a lot more than Kelly Holcomb (who they'll keep if they don't want to be mobbed by all the large Browns fans). So I don't know what they're going to end up doing, but rumor from a friend who works for the Browns says they might be looking to trade him - and he might be interested in leaving. |
Sorry ;) . . .

I'm down another pound this week, for a total of 83. Classes started yesterday, and luckily all of them (except one) start in the afternoon, which means I'll have plenty of time to work out before class in the morning.
|
I am going to start a diet tomorrow in order to lose weight by my birthday, Feb. 13th. :) Good luck to all of you.

Yeah, 125 is a little beasty for a Flyer lol . . .

okay you are doing nothing for my self esteem thanks. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
|
I am doing very well on my diet. I will not reveal my weight for fear of receiving the label "beasty" which will make me sad. :(
|
I will freely admit to being a fat pig right now. I am not sure what the big deal is about admitting we might be out of shape?
The first step to recovery is admitting we have a problem right? |
Hi I'm Cream and I have a jelly belly. Wow I feel better. :p
|
well i have no problem admitting that i would like to be super skinny again.. but 125 isn't "beasty". chunky i can agree with, but ugh. beasty? thats horrible sounding.
i'm sad. :( :( |
haha, i think chunky is horrible sounding.
i dont understand why people come up with words like chubby/husky/chunky. you're either FAT, or you're not. |
Please. Unless you're 3'6", 125 is not beasty. MAYBE overweight (depending on your body type, height, blah blah blah), but not beasty.
Hell, I'm at 145/150-ish, but I'm 5'7". If you go by numbers alone, and 125 is beasty, I must be Jabba the Hutt. Clothes-wise, though, I'm a size 8. My thin-as-a-rail sister (5'9" and a size 3) weighs 120. Weight is totally relative. Besides, beasty should be reserved for something like hairy man boobs. I may have a tummy, but at least I will NEVER have hairy man boobs. Y'all are rockin' on your diets. I've been very good so far this week - worked out every day, stayed around 1200 calories, and I refuse to weigh myself since our scale's so messed up - but I'm going to Niagara this weekend for my friend's birthday. If I make it through this weekend without going too out of control, I'll be impressed. |
Yeah! This thread rocks! Good luck to all of you out there! :)
I'm going to jump on the train with this weight-loss support....yes, it was my NYR too. My diet, I mean, healthy-eating plan, started before the new year, but resolutions are always good to make. I'm trying to do it without resorting to some of my more risky diet techniques of the past. So what flavors of the Slimfast bars are edible?? |

bad weekend...
I should've known it was going to be a rough weekend for dieting when I had already been drunk and sobered up by 7 pm on Friday...had the company party Friday evening, then went to Niagara for the rest of the weekend. I ate a lot more than I should, but with all things considered, my "binge" was probably less than I used to eat/drink in a normal day last year, let alone on a weekend. Not that I'm rationalizing, since I still ate more than I should've, but having one gin and tonic and two pieces of pizza on a "binge" is coming a long way from the six pack of beer and Denny's days. I need to stop being so hard on myself sometimes, I swear. Anyhow, I'm right back on the diet. I found these Ethnic Gourmet frozen dinners on sale last week - they have the same amount of calories as a lot of the Lean Cuisines and are much more exciting to eat. This one's an Indian vegetable dish...it's spicy, which I love, AND has like 120% of your vitamin A, 15% of your iron, 26% of your dietary fiber, etc. Makes Lean Cuisines seem boring in comparison.

i had an EXCELLENT thursday.
i went to a party with my sisters and didnt drink ANY beer or eat ANY food they had there. quite the feat considering the party was full of cheese, chips, chocolates, and dip.. sunday i did have a screwdriver at the bar, but as far as i'm concerened the orange juice cancels that out :D |

My NYR is also to lose weight, big surprise! I'm at 127 and when I came to college I was 120. My hope is to lose weight to at least get back to the 120 I was 3 months ago. I'm taking a group fitness class for credit and have worked out ever since last Wednesday and it feels great! I wasn't planning on going tonight, but this thread has really made me want to go again. I know I'm not overweight, but it would just be nice to be back at that weight again. Good Luck to me!
|
oh champ. how funny it is that we have never seen a picture of you.
also- you do not know me. if you did, you would know i am at the gym every morning. and the weight that i have gained has not made me fat- merely average size, perhaps a little extra on there for my small frame. this obviously doesn't please me. i want to be really thin again. i'm working on it. and to shut your rude ass up.. i bet you couldn't get a girl that like me or most of the other girls on GC if you jogged every day for two years. you have no class and are rather lacking in personality department. that, unfortunately for you, can not be made up for with all the looks in the world. so go jog that off. |
Well, I don't think I'd ever wanna date someone like you.
You're like 3 feet tall, you talk too much and you're average looking at best. |
i am almost 5 foot 3, thank you. and average looking is fine with me.. its better than being you, bitter and having to turn to the internet to find a way to get out aggressions from all the people who ridicule me in real life.
|
lol? you assume too much.
how am i being bitter towards you? you're the one who tried to say you were too good for me and all i did was let you know why you'd never see me trying to get at someone like you. calm down, slim. |
I think you guys are all awesome and I'm totally inspired by the posts on this thread. I've been to the gym every day so far this week. :D I'm trying to get back to my goal of going 6 days a week. We'll see...
Keep at it everyone!! :D |
First I'd like to say i like this thread, it's really good to hear all your stories.
I don't make NYRs but i've recently decided to try and cook healthier...the first step being learning to cook. Until now cooking meant taking from the freezer and shoving it into the oven or microwave. I never bought fresh produce or poultry or anything not boxed...so today i started, i made myself chicken with orange glaze and a salad... I could stand to lose 30 pounds or so, but i have yet to find the motivation...I know i would need more than just a diet, i'd need a "lifestyle change", that's prolly why i'm trying to cook more often...eventually i'll work into healthy meals... exercise is an unknown to me...i don't. last year i took yoga for a bit and that was quite a workout for me (don't knock it til you try it). I'm starting that again this week but i need to do more...i'm just NOT a morning person, and nights are so busy.... Well, thanks for letting me spiel.... |
Yoga IS a workout!! If you like it, you might want to try Pilates.
I was doing SO well yesterday....ate around 1200 calories (which I have to be careful to eat that much most days...a lot of times I'm not all that hungry and only eat around 1000 but that'll kill my metabolism). I went home and worked out and then went grocery shopping with my friend for our party tonight. Went back to their place and was STARVING, but I was ok. And then someone mentioned Chipotle. For anyone who's had Chipotle...or saw the Osbournes last week...you KNOW how addictive that stuff is. You're fine if you go cold turkey. In fact, you don't even miss it. But once you start having Chipotle, you want it ALL the time. It's seriously ridiculous. And, of course, you start off saving part of the burrito for the next day, but once you've been able to eat the whole thing, you can't go back. It's ridiculous. So today I REALLY have to try to be good. It's been easy so far since, thanks to the Chipotle burrito, I didn't wake up starving. So my plan is to have some peanuts in a little bit to get protein, then have a lean cuisine for lunch, then possibly Subway for dinner. I probably won't have time to work out, but I can take today off on that. |
MooseGirl-I hear you about cooking healthier! Mr. Mox & I just moved into an apartment in a new neighborhood. This is bad b/c we don't know anywhere to order pizza....and this is good b/c we don't know anywhere to order pizza. :D I'm just learning how to really cook now (beyond my menu of Tuna Helper & hot dogs), so cooking is enough of a challenge & cooking healthy is an even more daunting task! I was going to go shopping at Whole Foods (a super healthy grocery store by my apt.) but their name should really be Whole Check....healthy food is expensive!!
My big problem now is carbs. I love them! A lot! For dinner last night, I had half of a salmon filet and half of a sweet potato. I'm not doing too badly on my diet plan, I guess. Also, I've been taking two steps at a time at work. Do not do this with heels on. They get caught. Trust me. :p |
