Designing Your Own

The "Greek Favorites Poll" thread got me thinking...
If you were were starting up your own GLO, what symbols etc. would you choose to represent it?
(Colors, Mascot, Symbol, Flower, Jewel, Philanthropy, Motto)

Dionysus 01-01-2003 01:30 PM

Eta Chi Upsilon (don't ask :D)

Colors: Purple and Turquoise
Mascot: Parrot
Symbol: Pyramid
Flower: Fresia
Jewel: Diamond
Phil: Something that supports women

carnation 01-01-2003 01:48 PM

You guys just have to see ariesrising's sorority houses and the symbols she has selcted for them. I think it would be cool to be able to write a ritual for each one incorporating all her symbolism!

http://www.geocities.com/ariesrising...busetting.html

Tom Earp 01-01-2003 03:39 PM

Speaking of, where has she been??

Damn miss her here!:(

Design my own? Hell already did that! God I do love my Local Badge and Pledge Pin, My Coat of Arms and Flag! Only ones who has seen mey BX Bade/Pin is Brother Jono and The Local guys and International!

But Love LXA More! BX for 9 Months, LXA for 36 years!

Check out the LXA Coat of Arms, it is something to look at and study!

Oh, Beta Chi:

Color-Blue and White, no mascot except "Zorba" a cur dog, gems- none, Coat of Arms-symbols:

Clasped Hands, Sun Rising, Open Book, and Justice Scales. Crossed Sabers within a crossing Sash, and a Knights Helmut atop the Sheild.

Flag, Blue with White Border and Letters.

Pledge Pin: Oval with Crossed Sabers in Black on Blue.

Active Badge: Maltese Cross of Blue and White with Black Oval With BX in Gold in the Center.

Damn, I wonder if I could have started a National?!:)

AngelPhiSig 01-01-2003 03:42 PM

Kappa Pi

I have everything started for it, I was going to start it before I found Beta Sigma Phi.

Kappa Pi

Colors: Dusty Pink and Purple
Auxillary Colors: Red White and Blue (note they also form the Pink and Purple :))
Jewel: Diamond
Symbol: Star
Mascot: Bald Eagle
Flower: Pink and Purple Hyacynth
Phil: Didnt have one, it would be a service org with many Phils, probobly something local like Passages
Motto: Imagine
Song: Imagine by John Lennon

I have a crest, but its on my computer...

Its a sheild with a bald eagle in his one hand holding an olive branch in its right claw and the hyacynth in the left. He is facing the viewers right. Above him in the top point of the sheild is a star, on the viewers left and right are the letters Kappa and Pi respectively. Below the eagle is the sunset with the word IMAGINE in script written upsidedown and backwards (mirror image) under it. The sun is setting on a green field. At the base of the sheild is Lambda Upsilon Kappa Epsilon and the roman numerals (I will add this when I remember). The part of the sheild that the eagle is on is pink around the sun and fades to a deep purple/indigo by the star.

The whole crest is full of symbolism and so are the symbols. Its really beautiful. I have ritual written too... so if anyone is looking for an org to start... youre more than welcome to have my help :) I would love to see KPis started somewhere!!!! :):):)

Sistermadly 01-01-2003 04:23 PM

Ariesrising is still around... I received a PM from her a few days ago.

Tom Earp 01-01-2003 04:40 PM

Tell Her to get Back on Site! Other Than Falling in Love With HER, I miss her on Line!:)

Damn, nothing but FooseBall on TV, Might Do my Shrimp Dinner Early!

Had Dawgs last Night, Out With the old, Doing Shrimp Today, In with the New!:)

Blue Violet 01-01-2003 05:50 PM

doing it!

Actually it's not my GLO but I am getting to help a local get their act together and help wirte ritual. I also guided them when picking colors, mascots & stuff & help research the meanings etc. It's very cool and very rewarding!

Name: Alpha Delta Zeta (ADZee's) The meaning will be explained in the ritual-I haven't been told. I probably won't be.
colors: Navy & Hunter (friendship/new life; Night Sky/ Mother Earth)
Symbol: shooting star & dagger
Mascot: angel
Motto: not done yet-ideas anyone?
Philanthropy: two-Environmental causes (Recycling/adopt a highway-nothing too political) and something to do with domestic violence/DFACS
Flower: Tulip-because the are in season in the spring and fall symbolizing the different ages of people in the group and the different seasons of one's life.(I think-still needs to be finalized)

Motto, grip, crest (almost decided to not have a crest), password, creed, ritual, badge-still being developed. Flower is up for debate as well-everyone has a favorite. I think they've decide more what to NOT have than what to have (OUT are carnations and roses-so many other orgs already use them.)
The pledges wear a pin with the sorority ribbons on it, the sisters wear angel pins with the ribbons so far until they get a jeweler or whatever. Then they hope to have a sisters badge and let the pledge pin be the angel.

AngelPhiSig 01-01-2003 06:23 PM

I don't think it'll be a big problem. No offense, but I don't know that many art students who would want to join anything with "Fraternity" in the name.

LeslieAGD 01-01-2003 07:48 PM

For me, I would choose...

Colors: Wine Red and Midnight Blue
Mascot: Panther
Symbol: Star
Flower(s): Red and White Roses
Jewel: Pearl
Philanthropy: Operation Outreach: USA
Motto: "Strength through Sisterhood"

aephi alum 01-01-2003 09:23 PM

Colors: Indigo, black, and silver
Mascot: Black cat
Symbol: Not sure
Flower: Iris
Jewel: Tanzanite and diamond
Motto: Dream not of today (stolen from my local ;) )
Philanthropy: A program that helps either battered women, orphans, or children in foster care. In addition, chapters would be encouraged to choose a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen to support/volunteer at.
New member pin: Whatever the symbol is, in silver. New members would also receive indigo, black, and silver ribbons, that they can wear when not in pin attire.
Active's badge: Would incorporate tanzanites and diamonds, and be set in silver.

Now all I need are some letters. Wish I'd studied Greek :D

An idea for Blue Violet - instead of picking just one flower, how about a bouquet of 3-5 different flowers? Having a bunch of different flowers can represent diversity, and each flower might also represent something on its own. Just an idea :)

CardinalSM 01-01-2003 09:46 PM

Colors: red and gold
Mascot: a cardinal
Symbol: the Celtic trinity knot
Flower: white rose with red streaks (I have actually seen these)
Jewel: ruby and pearl
Motto: Focus not on what you are, but on what you can become.
Philanthropy: Young Life!
New member pin: silver trinity knot
Active's badge: trinity knot engraved with the letters and set with rubies and pearls

texas*princess 01-01-2003 09:59 PM

Delta Lambda was a local I helped found last spring at my other school before I transferred. Our symbols included:

Colors: Red, Blue, Green
Mascot: Lamb
Flower: white daisy
Jewel: Ruby
Motto: Remember the past, live for the future
Philanthropy: programs that helped women

There's a HUUUUGE difference between an Art Education major and an Art Studio major...at least, there is here. A lot of the art students I know are...shall we say...anti-establishment, and they aren't keen on Greek-letter organizations because they encourage conformity. (These aren't my words...this is just what I've heard being said. )

Anyway, to whoever wanted to use those letters--I say go ahead and do it! A professional organization and a social organization are different, so I don't think you'd be invading anyone else's territory.

Blue Violet 01-03-2003 05:43 PM

I did alittle research...

kappa pi is a co ed fraternity that is social and professional and has 168 ACTIVE chapters...pretty big for someone I've never heard of before. Just kinda interesting......

But Kappa Pi Sorority would be a technically different name:)

FuzzieAlum 01-03-2003 06:08 PM

You know what I would like ... a sorority for graduate students. They're frequently looking for support and service, but from their peers (not older alums or undergrads). It would have to not conflict with membership in an NPC or NPHC org, and probably have a reduced time commitment. Also, given the different lifestyles of grads, it wouldn't have houses, or tons of mixers. It would probably have more of a service focus. Think A Phi O, graduate women only.

The idea is more important than the details, but here's my stab at 'em:

name: Sigma Sigma (service sisterhood)
nickname: Double S
principles: Service to school and community; high scholarship
colors: gray and white (hey, they're not taken yet)
symbol: hand (lifts others up)
mascot: none
jewel: marcasite
flower: white carnation
motto: School, service, sisterhood
philanthropy: Local charities

That's a cool idea-I did a thread search on it and DGWannabe was starting one and asked for advice about it. Maybe you'd want to pm her about it.
I know I'd be interested. I'll be going to grad school reall really far away from my home (and chapter) so I know I'd dig it. i'd like to stay involved.

maggieaxid 01-03-2003 07:55 PM

Since the lambda chi's i hung out with at school couldn't have lil' sisters, we created a mini-sisterhood for ourseleves:
Xi Phi Pi (for AXiD, Phi Mu, and AOTT)
our colors were: navy blue, pink and red (didn't look too good together)
our flower: the white rose (adapted from the lambda chis)
our symbols: a shooting star, a magic wand, a heart, a moon
our badge: we didn't have badges, but we each did get a magic wand from the $1 store
principles: friendship, love and shooting for the stars, support for woman
philanthropy: we didn't actually have one, but if we did I think it would have been to set up scholarships at colleges for underprivlidged women to go to college
jewel: we didn't have one, but diamonds are a girl's best friend.
our motto: here's to the one's we love, we love....here's to the one's who love us, love us, but the ones that love us aren't the ones we love, so F***k them, here's to us..... ok, not actually a motto a bitchy cheer for girls with pms.

 WHY NOT???? I think that is very judgemental of you to say that! What makes it so unbelievable that art students would join a sorority or fraternity??? I am an art major (interior design and hopefully also art education) and I am also a proud sister of Zeta Tau Alpha! I know many other art majors that are greek. what makes yo think that someone who is interested in art could not at the same time be interested in the life long bonds of wonerful sisterhood? Because I like art must mean I am above great friendhips and great contributations to my community???? you might should rethink that comment AchtungBaby80!

Don't you hate it when people sterotype "sorority girls" what do you think that youhave just done for "art majors" next time THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lilkel244 04-06-2003 05:21 PM
