Jocks and Cheerleaders--where ya at??

Well,

Seeing as how we have threads for the Drumline, and the band, and the color/winterguards, etc. I think it's time that i throw my hat into the ring.

Calling all the Jocks and Cheerleaders out there....

I played football for all 4 years, lettered jr. and sr. year(and that's TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL folks, doesn't get much more BIG TIME than that!)

Lettered in soccer jr. year

lettered in Track(shot and disc) jr. and sr. years

coached girls Powder Puff jr. and sr. years.

Ok, well, let's hear from the rest of the Jocks and cheerleaders on GC........

We've been subjected to the myriad of "one time, at band camp...." stories, but what i REALLY want to hear are stories that start out "This One Time, at Cheerleader Camp...." ;)

Kitso
KS 361 times we laughed at the band kids doing push-ups while we were on water breaks during 2-a-days :D

KappaTarzan 12-31-2002 02:55 AM

HELL YEA

hehe kitso, i can't even count the number of times we said "this one time, at cheerleading camp"...

i was the first freshman girl to ever make my HS varsity cheering squad.. lettered 4 years as a varsity cheerleader, and became the head captain my sr year... went ALL AMERICAN during that time... got to go to hawaii and cheer in the pro bowl for that :D

i help out at my HS coaching the varsity squad now, whipping those girls into shape!

i also have done gymnastics since i was about 3... i did competitive until i started cheering when i was 12, then i just did it to compliment the cheering... i danced for 10 years, too.. ballet and pointe were my specialties ;)

HELL YEA CHEERLEADERS/JOCKS!! ;)

Unregistered- 12-31-2002 02:59 AM

Cheerleader-4 years, 3 varsity letters

Outrigger Canoe Paddling-3 years, 2 varsity letters

and I usually play soccer during the summer leagues.

There was nothing fun about cheerleading camp. Up at 6AM and bedtime was at midnight. The only thing good about it was that it kicked my ass so hard that I looked good every time the new school year began.

I'll be prepared to kick anyone's ass who says that cheerleading isn't a sport!!!

Dionysus 12-31-2002 03:04 AM

Not here. They were the root of all evil.

Okay, okay....SOCCER WAS LIFE in high school! I also did both poms and cheerleading, but I burned out really quickly doing both and quit very early on.

*edited* and I didn't consider cheerleading as a sport...but that's just my opinion.

TxTechCutie 12-31-2002 03:34 AM

In high school I was in pep squad my freshman year( girls had to go through that before we could try out for cheer, drill or dance team) and the the last 3 years I was on dance team. I was jr captain my junior year and senior captain my senior year. I always wanted to run track but I never had the time. :(

sugar and spice 12-31-2002 03:39 AM

I lettered in cross-country and track in high school. I wasn't very good, but apparently I was good enough to get letters. I also played a year on the tennis team but hated the people on it, so I quit.

At various points in my life I also did gymnastics, soccer, and basketball too.

i second that!!

astroAPhi 12-31-2002 04:20 AM

In high school I got 4 varsity letters... 3 in soccer, 1 in bowling (I know, what a nerd). I should have had 5, but the coach was a jerk and cut me freshman year because I was throwing up and couldn't play, even though he'd seen me play for years.

We just started up a women's soccer team at Florida Tech and I tried out and made it. I actually did really well and it looks like I'll be starting unless we really get an amazing bunch of freshman (more specifically, ones that play center midfield). I'm excited because it looks like I might be a captain! :)

FAB*SpiceySpice 12-31-2002 05:24 AM

I was a cheerleader throughout high school and I loved it! I transferred to a Catholic HS my jr. year where our squad wasn't grounded, it was SO much better, a lot harder, but much more fun. We went to Nationals every year and my senior year we got third place, it was soooooo exciting!!! I was a captain my senior year and it was such a blast. I do agree with OTW about cheer camp not being all that fun. I remember the first morning I woke up there freshman year I CRIED b/c I was so sore from the day before and sunburned and I just wanted to fake sick and stay in bed all day. But as the years went out, it got much easier. I agree that cheering is a sport, esp. competitive cheering! Cheer camp did have its fun moments though, especially the year when our bathroom window looked right in to the room of some of the guy cheerleaders who were teaching us. ;)

I was also captain of the tennis team, and I have played tennis since I was 6...so that's almost 14 years...wow! :D

OUlioness01 12-31-2002 06:45 AM

alright, i did cheerleading and i ran track too....i guess i was really busy in high scool.

AOX81 12-31-2002 09:59 AM

I was a competitive gymnast for several years. (5 or 6 years I think...I can't remember)

During junior high I was on the swim team.

I cheered for two years in High School. I made the Varsity squad but I quit because I decided I needed to get a job. (I knew that if I wanted to go to college I had to pay for it myself.) Here is a picture of the 2002 Squad.

I wanted to be a part of the pom squad in high school but it was not a school sponsored sport and cost a shit ton of money...the squad at my school is awesome. They usually rank pretty high at the UDA National High School Dance Team Championships every year...you might have seen them on TV.

twinstars 12-31-2002 10:57 AM

a cheerleader here

I was a cheerleader for six years, from 7th grade to senior year. I was varsity twice and finally made it to the varsity football squad my last season, senior year.

My friends in college, who didn't know me then, think it's HILARIOUS that I was a cheerleader...

xo_kathy 12-31-2002 11:53 AM

AOX - Did you go to Swartz Creek? Great dance team!!!

I was a pommer all four years - captain my senior year. Also was All-American and got to perform in the 1993 Macy's Parade. FUN!
Pom camp was tough! Hard work but lots of great memories! I also lettered in soccer.

I was on my college dance team for a year, too, but got too busy with my dance major so didn't continue. I was also a staff member of a dance/pom camp one summer during college. Now those are some stories! All the fun of pom camp plus alcohol! ;)

And it's nice to hear that some school's had bands that were actually good. Push-ups? Ha! Half of our band members were so out of shape they could barely hold their instruments up AND march!!!

WhiteDaisy128 12-31-2002 12:23 PM

Varsity Cheerleading - 4 years in high school

Gymnastics Team (captain for 11th and 12th) - 4 years in high school (gym outside of school for 16 years; started competing at age 7); Did gymnastics in college one year before busting up my knee so now I'm just doing the club team, which is soooo much less stressful!

I sure did!! A couple of my friends were also in the 1993 Macy's Parade!

amycat412 12-31-2002 02:27 PM

4 Varsity Letters, 2 for dance/pom squad, 2 for cheerleading. Captain my senior year. Nominated to Who's Who Amongst American High School Students two years in a row by Nat'l Cheerleading Assoc.

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-31-2002 05:25 PM

Varsity Tennis 4 years- Captain for 3 years on the gal squad

I was a softballer for years also, but, I could only play one spring sport, so, tennis won...

Also, I believe that cheerleading is a sport (as long as it's competitive) *nods* I go to competitions all the time w/my neice (who is in a nationally ranked squad) and they are freaking awesome!

SATX*APhi 12-31-2002 05:42 PM

I played basketball for a year. After that I couldn't fit it into my schedule. I was too busy.

Nikki_DZ 12-31-2002 08:11 PM

-varsity soccer for 4 years (two years co-captain, 2 years all-league)
-jv tennis-2 years (I'm horrible)
-cheerleading- 2 years varsity, then I quit b/c of overlap w/ soccer

James 12-31-2002 08:18 PM

2 years Cheerleading in college. Am I the only male cheer leader on this site lol?

Less people think Cheeleaders are slackers, almost my entire first year squad became student senators, and Greeks.

In fact three of us went on to be chapter presidents and we had a few other execs out of only eight or nine NIC/NPC groups.

We were a pretty invovled squad. :)

KSigkid 01-01-2003 04:02 AM

Four years of baseball (last two on varsity), one year of indoor track (was a club sport, would have gotten a varsity letter if it was a varsity sport).

Collin

ChiOqt 01-01-2003 07:18 PM

Six years on volleyball from 7th to 12th grade. And Junior Olympic Volleyball from 8th to 12th grade. As well as softball and basketball! Oh how I miss it....:)

Allie 01-01-2003 10:05 PM

4 varsity letter in Volleyball, 7th grade to my senior year

3 varsity letters in softball (I decided to give it a chance and tried out my sophomore year, I had never even played back yard catch, I ended up being the starting center fielder and the back-up catcher :))

I also played soccor as a little kid for 5 years

I cheered in middle school

I also tried basketball one year in middle school and HATED IT!

I also was part of the weighlifting club, one of the few girls, I do believe it helped me with my sports and reduced a lot of my injuries.

AngelPhiSig 01-04-2003 10:02 PM

Along with band etc...

I was on our dance team for three years
Cheered for the community team for a year
Threw jav and discus for three years
was on tennis for a year

Jadey28 01-04-2003 11:43 PM

I was...

-a gymnast for 6 years
-a majorette for 6 years
-a cheerleader for 7 years (3 in middle school, 4 in high school-all 4 years varsity-captain my senior year)
-a member of my high school's track team for 4 years, captain senior year

All 4 years of high school, I lettered in both cheerleading and track. I must say that I miss both activities dearly, and I often think of returning to my high school to coach. I have also considered trying out for the Raven's Football team cheerleading squad. (yes, I know, the team sucks, but it would be a lot of fun :)).

AGDPrincess70 01-05-2003 01:57 PM

-played volleyball freshman and sophomore year
-played softball from 7th grade to 10th grade

I actually have played softball off and on since I was like 8, but I had to give up all sports my soph year because I got too busy with band and theatre and dance.

Oh, and I cheered in middle school, too.

starang21 01-05-2003 06:37 PM

Varsity Football

Varsity track (captain of sprint team senior year)

sports

Baton twirler all of my life and throughout college.

James...in response to your query....
My husband spotted for me as my "partner-dance partner" during half-time shows in college, and we competed in "pairs" in sanctioned state, sanctioned regionals, and unsanctioned national-ish competitions in 2001. For old people, we did really well (5th in regionals and 2nd in state). One day he told me, "I am NOT going to learn how to do a front walk-over..don't even ask."

AOIISilver:D

Oh, and at 4 feet 3 inches tall, I was our junior high school team's shot putter!

How old were you guys when you competed?

For gymnastics I would have to say between the ages of 8 and 13.

Imthechamp 01-14-2003 12:59 PM

Last time I checked, cheerleading and band weren't real sports.

I'll agree with the idea that band isn't a real sport, but i think cheerleading takes a great deal of athletic talent. I spent all my middle school and high school years going to my sister's cheerleading competitions, and as far as i'm concerned that's as much of a sport as women's gymnastics.

Although, i do kinda have a problem with sports that rely on scores "given" by judges. To me, you need to have clear cut and concrete definitions of what constitutes a point or deduction of one.

Kitso
KS 361 times my buddies thought i was lucky cuz i got to spend weekends surrounded by cheerleaders :D

EM1843 01-14-2003 06:30 PM

I guess I throw in my list of HS sports...
2yrs JV Football
2yrs Var. Football
1yr JV Wrestling
1yr Var. Wrestling
3yrs Weightlifting (Held the school Heavyweight record for Clean & Jerk when I graduated)
3yrs Track and Field (OK only Field but I was Captain my senior year)

I also don't think cheerleading is a sport and neither is gymnastics...they are to subjective to be sports. But that is just my opinion

!! :) yay for defending the cheerleaders. we love you for it ;)
i agree. cheerleading is a sport. it requires definite athletic talent.
champ- i dare you to attempt half of stunts that my girls and i perform. or to do the gymnastics we do on the floor for halftimes and competitions.
hell, i challenge you to even try to date one of us.

Imthechamp 01-14-2003 09:20 PM

I don't think you, or any of your teammates would meet my standards.

I like good lookin women, ya know?

PrincessPhiSig 01-14-2003 09:58 PM

Hmm, well, I stuck to one sport mainly...volleyball. I played from junior high on, and got 3 varsity letters in it. I also ran track my sophomore year and lettered in that but I hated it.

When I wasn't playing volleyball for school, I played on a club team that traveled all around and played in tournaments. I wish I could go back to it! It was so fun!

Then, I played in college until I transferred schools. I really miss it but I do play intramurals at this college. :)

Oh and on the cheerleading note: At my high school, I would never say cheerleading was a sport, because they did nothing very athletic and only practiced twice a week. Competitive squads on the other hand work so much harder and utilize so much gymnastic ability. I love to watch the competitions on tv. :)

i think myself and my teammates would so exceed your wildest dreams of wonderful women that you would be intimidated and unable to compose yourself.
although, there isn't much of you to compose.
you were one of those people who everyone hated in high school, huh? that sucks. wish you didn't suck. too bad, really. you had potential to be kind of cool.

Imthechamp 01-14-2003 10:49 PM

chideltjen 01-15-2003 01:51 AM

frosh year: badminton... ok... well that lasted two weeks. you would be amazed at how much running we actually do in that sport.

soph year: tried out for soccer with a cast on my arm and made JV. the trainer freaked out!
then went out for track and started running the 800 m (read: race for the insane.)

jr year: had a cast on my leg for tryouts for soccer so they stuck me on JV again. (I just have really bad luck with injuries.)
did track again but started doing the mile and the 800 m.

senior year: did XC and it was the greatest thing in the world.
skipped soccer.
did track half assed cuz i wasn't really into it but still got thru it.

i actually considered doing cheer... only i am hardly gumby and afraid of heights. I also found out it's a lot more expensive than i thought.
