Chapter Mascots
I didn't know how common it was to have a local mascot as well as a national mascot. I know at my school, Phi Mu's have adopted the ladybug instead of the lion since there is also an ADPi chapter at my school and they use the lion. And our chapter of Chi Omega uses the chili pepper as well as the owl. Do any of y'alls chapters of your sororities/fraternities have chapter mascots?
|
We don't have ANY mascot, local OR national. I have heard some some SAI chapters that have done so though.
I also heard of one SAI chapter that each family line has their own mascot so they can distinguish lines. |
Our national doesn't exactly have a mascot although for some reason, someone in my chapter said it was a panda bear two years ago and then we found other chapters that had no idea about the panda... so I don't know. My chapter adopted the lamb (Delta Lambda- cheesy, but cute) when we were founded. And like Sairose said, we have some family lines that have "mascots:" mine is cherries just because, one family is called the Dynasty because almost everyone in it is Asian. Another is the Fertile Turtle family (tons of people in that family!). It's just all how you look at it.

We have a mascot for EVERYTHING.
National - Raggedy Ann (Ophia) Chapter - Opal the Cow (we're Mu chapter. I HATE cows.) Family - Eta Elephants, Zeta Lions, Gamma Frogs (mine is the frog) I don''t have enough stuffed animals. I think surely we could come up with a mascot for something else.... |
We have national and local mascots. Phi Sig's national mascot is the sphinx and my chapter's local mascot is the penguin. It's a nice addition to the chapter because we give each other stuffed penguins as gifts on holidays. It definitely helps make our chapter unique.
|
Our Phi Sigma Sigma Chapter in Southern California has chosen the butterfly as our local mascot. We have chosen things from nature as our "family" mascots. My family is the star, we also have dolphins, suns, ladybugs, queen bees, clouds, dragonflies, and I'm probably missing another family our two.
|
Almost all AOII chapters recognize the panda as an "unofficial" International mascot. Many chapters also had/have local mascots as well. My chapter's local mascot is the unicorn, but I doubt they use that much anymore.

Our nation is a teddy bear and our local is a ladybug. Word is that one day we just decided to add a local mascot after a national conference. It's so much fun to have two mascots...it makes it easier to find presents!
|
Sigma Alpha's national mascot is a baby bull. And my chapter I guess has never been too keen on that so we adopted the yellow duck as our chapter mascot. We make duck shaped cookies for rush, duck pillows, little rubber ducks as big and little gifts. It's a lot easier than finding baby bull stuff thats cute :)

Mascots
As previously mentioned, Phi Sigma Sigma's national symbol is the Sphinx. While my chapter's local mascot is the Owl. Supposedly our local founders chose it standing for being studious and nocternal (more of the second I think) ;)

DphiE's national mascot is the unicorn...my chapter also uses this as our mascot although they seem to be in short supply these days (the only reason my LiL's received any was b/c of eBay) Lately girls have been getting creative and shaping their paddles like precious moments unicorns...it doesn't get any better than that!
EDITED TO ADD: What's REALLY scary is that i'm watching a re-run of Ally McBeal and it's the one where she "sees" a UNICORN!!! |
When I was pledging I had been told by someone that the Gammie Gator was our national mascot...I had asked the CLC (collegiate leadership consultant) about it a semester or two later and she said that some chapters had local mascots, but there was no national mascot (the gator is actually the local mascot at another school in our province). Then last summer we decided to add a mascot to our chapter as well, and we wanted something different and unique, so we chose the unicorn.

We have a little stuffed snake called Charlie. I believe he's been stolen again (he's a favorite target of sororities when they visit us).
|
as a local, we have a symbol (palm tree), a flower (pink rose), and a gem stone (opal).
We have kinda adopted Quasi Moto as our mascot. It's an inside joke among the sisters. One girl just said it one day and it stuck. It's kinda funny tho. |
The DPhiE colony from back home has "Rosie the Unicorn". Rosie is actually the colony president's chiuaua (sp?.. that is such a weird word to spell :P )
|
Alpha Sigma Alpha's national mascots are the ladybug and Raggedy Ann... although I think they are slowly moving away from Raggedy Ann... I'm glad we have a cute mascot... you can always find tons of cute ladybug things!!!
|
Alpha Sigma Chapter
My chapter's local mascots are the lion and the rainbow. We're trying to move away from the whole rainbow thing though.
|
Zeta Tau Alpha has no national mascot so each chapter chooses their own. Mine is the turtle, as it took so long to become ZTA when our local went national. There are many chapters with bunnies as thier mascot and sometimes people think the bunny is a national symbol.
Some ZTA symbols are the strawberry and the five pointed crown. |
Supposedly ASA has no national (i.e. mandated in our national bylaws) mascot. I think they had to say that because even though a lot of chapters use Raggedy Ann and that's what we're told when pledging, Bobbs-Merrill or whoever owns her was getting P.O.'d and wanted $$$ for using it. Our local was turtles when I pledged and I have to say it is still taking me a while to get used to the ladybugs - some of the ladybugs look more like roaches. We have 2 chapters in KS that use apples everywhere - I think they even go by the nickname apples.
|
Our national is an owl, but in my chapter the families have different mascots. My family is called the princess family, we are ll named after a Disney Princess and our symbol is the crown!. My friend who is a ZTA moved to my school where we didnt' have ZTA and because she hung out with the chi o's, we sorta adopted her and she's my gran big, she obviously couldn't go through initiatation but we started the Princess family and use the crown beause of her!

As far as I know, all Alpha Phi chapters stick with our national mascot, the Phi Bear. At least all the chapters I know of.
|
AGD
Our national is the Squirrel and we don't have a chapter mascot. Most people don't like the idea of a squirrel at first but they really do grow on you.
|
Phi Mu's national mascot is now Sir Fidel the lion... but they only decided this recently (not sure HOW recently though). Before, different chapters of Phi Mu used ladybugs or lions. I would imagine that some chapters are still pretty partial to ladybugs (including our advisor's home chapter). But my chapter only uses Sir Fidel :)
|
It is funny that most people outside of ZTA think that the bunny is our official national mascot. I went to officer training last month and another chapter in our state hadn't even heard about the bunny. Where they living under a rock?! But, I think the bunny is really cute cuz we can use the playboy bunny (I know it's kinda getting old, but there's plenty of gift ideas there). I heard there's a Florida chapter that uses the "Zeta gator," maybe because is sounds good (aside from the obvious reason). I kinda wish we had a national mascot sometimes, but we have a couple of symbols that are official that are really cool and incredibly meaningful, and that's nice too. :)
|
The ZTAs at my old school used angels. when I got here and saw all of the bunnies, I was like, "huh?" The angels were a HUGE deal there.
|
We have an Oscar Fish in our fish tank at the house that the guys call Oscar, were so original. It’s not really a chapter mascot but it’s the biggest living animal in the house so I guess it wins by default. This isn’t her but she looks a lot like this.
|
i didnt know you could have a seperate chapter mascot!! (?) i think adpis everywhere use the lion, diamond, and violet...
|
My Chapter
Our National organization does not exactly have a "mascot" per say (we have many symbols such as the strawberry and crown) but each chapter adopts a mascot. May of our chapters use the Angel (like mine) or the Rabbit. I have seen a turtle and the little mermaid. Some chapters have "Family line" mascots. My aunt and mother's chapter do this. Some in my chapter do. My big and lil's are the butterflies.
|
Our chapter uses the Phi Bear for everything. But I can't complain because I could never have enough teddy bears!
|
One line of my family uses angels, and I think we're really going to apply that to the rest because of our family quote: "Music is well said to be the speech of angels."
One of my bigs always had cows for hers, and another family uses turtles for no apparent reason. But angels seems to be our thing, and so it'll probably stick that way. I wish we had a mascot, but I've been told that it's too "unprofessional" for SAI. ~Emma |
Our national has no animal for its mascot, we have the anchor. Our chapter though has adopted the frog though, there is a whole story why the founders of our chapter chose the frog, it has to do with a Japanese folk story.. I have way too much frog stuff.
|
We have two mascots so to speak:
1) Doobie IV : a ceramic monkey on a surfboard we've had for years since we resurfaced on campus that we got in tiajuana. We had four of them but the first three have either been broken or lost. 2) Buddy: One of our bros' dog. |
Since Zeta doesn't have an official animal mascot, we use the white tiger.
|
Delta Gamma has the Raggedy Anne doll (but her name is Hannah) and the anchor. My chapter uses these national symbols. We **LOVE** Hannah! I have my mom's Hannah doll from when she was in college! We also love our anchor - I'm glad it's easier to draw than Hannah is!! :D

Those are Weak!
im sorry but those mascots are kinda stupid... Our's is a unicorn. So ha! Just jokin'. Its kinda funny to hear about mascots like a dragon from betas or a lion from SAE and stuff like that. ours is a unicorn. Seems kinda ... well... gay if you ask me. but one day we came across this book that stated that our real mascot originally was the severed head of a unicorn, and then due to political correctness it was changed to a unicorn. So I'm sticking with the severed head of a unicorn cause its coola! So there ya go betas and SAE's, try and beat that. And if you've ever watched Harry Potter and the sorcerers stone then you would know the powers of a unicorn.
In our crest the unicorn head is on top and the rest of the crest is uppose to be the danglings of the neck (which is kinda gross). |

Our chapter uses only our National, the LION!!! Well, Sir Fidel to be exact. I kinda wish it was a teddy bear cuz I collect them! But not I have a fine collection of lions. I always heard about the ladybug thing, but I never knew what it was about until someone posted it in the Phi Mu forum. I just wish I knew what the symbolism behind the ladybug is! |
Our chapter uses the national mascot, the turtle. When I first joined, I was disappointed...but now I can't have enough turtles! We don't have a chapter mascot, but my roomie who is a Kappa Delta does; they use the teddy bear and the lady bug.
|
On my campus, the AZD's used Teddy Bears in lieu of the national mascot- BetXi Bear....also, sometimes we used the grateful dead bear too. Also, for posters and things we used the paw print of the bear, it's really cute!
the other chapter's used: phi mu- the pink panther tri sigma- the sailboat and the road runner and taz zeta- bunnies, strawberries, and the crown sigma kappa- a big green and purple stuffed snake asa- ragedy ann and lady bugs aopi- panda bears and ladders |
Question @ Phi Mu & ADPi
OK, Both have the Lion and they were founded within a year of each other at the same school. Phi Mu sisters-does your national say why Phi Mu picked the lion when it was already being used on your campus by ADPi? And if the founders didn't care that it was already being used, why would a Phi Mu chapter today care and use a different mascot-like the ladybug. I just find this really interesting. My chapter only uses the international mascots & symbols. I think having a local mascot is cool if you have no (inter)national mascot, but if you have one, why would you change it? I'm just curious.
