White elephant
Just a warning. If you're going to play this game, make sure you don't spend more than five dollars on the gift, because you may get something like peanuts, flour, or duct tape in return.:mad::rolleyes:
|
What happened??
How much did you spend and what did you wind up with?? |
What is this game? Can someone explain??
|
This game is similar to the Chinese something game... ahhh can't remember what it's called. Everyone brings a wrapped gift that is something they don't want (usually from their house)... they try to be creative and funny. Then everyone draws numbers. Number One gets to pick from all the gifts. Number Two gets to either pick a new gift, or steal Number One's gift. Number Three can either pick a new one, or steal from Numbers One and Two. Get it? Usually a gift can only be stolen three times, so the person who steals it the third time gets to keep it.
The "White Elephant" part has to do with the gift being something that no one would really want. It is a fun game... A couple weeks ago, my chapter played a version of this at our Christmas party. We called it Dirty Santa- everyone brought lingerie or racy items as their gift. |

Hahaha... it's all in innocent fun. We have several "innocents" in our chapter who brought things like lip gloss and picture frames. I brought glitter glue in 16 different colors :D But some of the items at the party would definitely raise a founder's eyebrow

First of all, everyone provides a gift within a predetermined limit ($10 max, $15 max, etc). It may be a "serious' one or a gag gift. Then all parties draw a number based on how many are participate (12 participants, 12 numbers). Now here's where the fun begins: The person who pulls #1 gets the first gift. The person who pulls #2 gets to pick the second gift OR can take #1's gift and #1 has to pull another gift, but s/he cannot take back the gift #2 has taken away. This goes on down the line until all gifts are received. In other words, it is more advantageous to have a high number b/c you already know what gifts are out there and can choose to take one of those instead of taking the last few under the tree. It has a "Let's Make A Deal" type of ring to it. Hope this helps. |

It's funny, how you relate White Elephant to a game show:p |
.

this reminds me of..
the time my Big got a potato, a carrot, a stick of celery, a green bean and an onion. :p
|
It isn't always items nobody would want. My boyfriend's office did a white elephant exchange last week, and he ended up with a pack of 12 beers from around the world. He was 9th out of 10, so he got to basically steal whatever he wanted...
|
I'm going to a white elephant tonight - always a good laugh!
|
We call this combat gift exchange. You can only steal a gift three times. It is fun unless you end up with the crappy gift and if no one steals from you.

I have never even heard of this. It sounds like fun. :p

It's that time of the year again!
This time there's going to be a WE at a christmas party with the college/youth group from my church.
 I must take advantage. *evil smile* What are some inappropiate things under 5$ that I can buy? The only thing I can think of is a playboy magazine, but that is kinda big. I want something small enough I can sneak under the tree w/out anyone seeing me. Perhaps I can sneak it under my coat. |
The alumnae club I'm in does this, but with Christmas ornaments, most of which have an AGD theme. One sister got TWO beautiful squirrel ornaments but she had a really bad cold and I didn't have the heart to take them from her! All of the ornaments are gorgeous though!

I can't believe I'm adding to the evilness. hehehehe |
My office had a holiday party the other day, and we did this. We called it "Cutthroat Santa" :D We had a $15-20 spending range, so the gifts were fairly nice (for the most part!) I put in a gift card to Barnes & Noble and walked away with a gift card to FYE (nice :) ).
My boss was thrilled because he had a high number. He stole a nice gift from someone. It was stolen from him in turn, and he wound up with a fruitcake! :p The way we did it, if your gift got stolen you had to take a gift from the table. I've also played a variant where if your gift is stolen, you can steal someone else's gift (but you can't steal back the gift that was taken from you), but once a gift has been stolen 3 times it stays with whoever last stole it. |

I had one at my work a couple years back...I brought in some stuffed animal on a snow board (some stupid gift I received one year) and in return I ended up picking one of those pocket bibles that people pass out on campus and on the streets!! One person got a fake pile of poop!!!!!!!!!!

I have played two versions of this game...
The first is a serious dirty Santa where the gifts are good ones in the under $20 range.
The second was one at church where you are supposed to bring a gift that you actually got as a previous year's Christmas present that you REALLY hated. I could not believe my eyes when one woman unwrapped a 5-arm sterling candelabra! Who would give that away as a hated gift? Good grief, I ended up taking home a toaster cozy that was in the form of a quilted chicken with yarn hair. Silver |
We played Dirty Santa at my office Christmas dinner just yesterday. We do good gift, $15 maximum. #1 picks and opens any gift, #2 can steal or open the gift, and so on. We also have the rule about the gift cannot be stolen more than 3 times.
I was glad to see the gift I brought got maxed out of the stealing rule. Also I was #11 (the last number) so I got to pick from pretty much anything. I stole a chip and dip tray, it is stoneware and it matches my dishes. -wendi |
We played this at my companies Holiday Party on Thursday evening. I left with a 3D puzzle of a Star Wars ship. There were a lot of cookie jars, toiletries (toliet paper, tissues, soap, toilet seat covers), and candles. One women thought she was getting a bottle of alcohol (it was wrapped up in tissue paper inside a wine bottle bag), but instead it was two cans of WD-40! The look on her face was priceless as she opened it up! It was fun, and it gives you a chance to get rid of any unwanted things you have lying around the house.
:p |
Alrighty, I took BetaRose's advice. I got TP. But that wasn't the worse. One guy had Exlax. Another one had TAMPONS!
