Which side?

Just curious, but what side of your family do you side the closest with? Ya know, like if your father has italian lineage and your mother has british..which one you will say you are the quickest? :)

lifesaver 12-20-2002 06:25 PM

German - My fathers.

My mothers is Scottish, but they have been in the us for many generations (my grandmother was a member of the DAR), so theyre pretty americanized. My fathers family was a pretty recent import to the US. Also since my last name is of german descent I just seem to identify withthem. Wierd 'cause I have only met them about 4 times, yet I lived 2 doors down the street from my moms parents.

Imthechamp 12-20-2002 06:25 PM

I SIDE WITH THE BEST LOOKIN SIDE OF THE FAMILY...WHICH HAPPENS TO BE MOSTLY EVERYONE.

THE ONLY UGLY PERSON IN MY FAMILY IS PROLLY AMANDA.

SUCKS TO BE HERE.

japhir 12-20-2002 06:50 PM

My dad's - Irish

For a couple of reasons, it's more fun being Irish; I look more like that side of the family (blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin); and I just feel more attached to that culture.
My mom's family considers themselves Czech, but they were originally gypsies so there are many different cultures rolled up into one.

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-20-2002 07:19 PM

[COLOR=firebrick] Oops, forgot to put my own.

Native American- Mama's side

My grandmother is half Cherokee, Beaver clan (if I hear any jokes I will find you and beat you..lol) I'm closer to that side anyway, out of 11 siblings of my mothers, there's plenty of communication! :)

My fathers side is Irish Catholic and Jewish..(very odd I know..) we're not so close to his side.

PM_Mama00 12-20-2002 07:28 PM

Mine's not hard.... My parents were born in the same city in Sicily!

Unregistered- 12-20-2002 07:37 PM

Neither...ethnicity doesn't really play a role.

When asked 'what I am'...I just say I'm local.

But for those who are wondering--Dad's Filipino, Japanese, Hawaiian, and Russian...Mom's straight up Filipino.

Rudey 12-20-2002 07:44 PM

My greek side. It's hard having Zeus for a dad. He

my dad's side-Irish

i'm a quarter irish, 1/2 german, 1/8 french and 1/8 english, but my last name is irish (as is my first and middle name) so that's what i identify with the most.

FuzzieAlum 12-20-2002 08:34 PM

I'm Russian, Finnish, German, and Bohemian, with a Dutch surname, but the only traditions from any of those lands still alive in my family are Finnish, so I'd have to go with that.

Winterbloom 12-20-2002 08:37 PM

My father's side. We're Azorean Portugese, and I really look like that side of the family--short and curvey with curly red hair and dark eyes. My Mum's side is German/Hungarian/Dutch, and the only thing I've got from them is the pale skin. They're all really tall and thin with dark hair and blue eyes. I always wanted to look more like that side of the family growing up.

The irony of it all is my family and my young man's family both originated from Castille and migrated--mine to Portugal, then MA; his to Puerto Rico, then NYC.

FiReKraCkEr 12-20-2002 08:46 PM

Well, I'm 1/2 Korean, 1/4 Spanish, and 1/4 Hawaiian.

My dad's 1/2 Korean and Spanish and my mom is 1/2 Korean and 1/2 Hawaiian......just a lot of numbers.....

However, I look more Hawaiian than everything else......so I just say I'm Hawaiian and Korean.

ZTAngel 12-20-2002 09:23 PM

I'm closer with my mom's side which are a mixture of Spanish, Moroccan, and Turkish. I see them more often since they live close to my parents house.

My father's side is all in Cleveland so I see them maybe once every two years. That side is Austrian, Hungarian, Russian, and Polish.

If I had to go by eye and hair color, then it's my dad's side (they have lighter hair and eyes). My olive skin tones comes from my mother's side.

[X] Brown
[_] Black
[X] White
[_] Yellow
[_] Green
[X] Other Exotic Shit

Those are the boxes I usually check off. Sometimes I check off "Green" to be silly! ^_^. I AM HALF MEXICAN, HALF WHITE. I know I have some other exotic shit in my family line but I am too lazy to research anyone who isn't alive.

ADPi~Ally 12-21-2002 06:07 AM

I'm heinz 57.
I'm German, Polish, Scot-Irish, Italian, and a tad bit Indian.
(Dad is half German, half Polish, my Mom is the one with everything.)

My Grandmother was a DAR too. I am english/irish/scottish. I identify with scottish b/c my last name is scottish but everyone thinks I am irish b/c I have redhair/blue eyes and very pale skin.

librasoul22 12-21-2002 12:03 PM

I am pretty much equal parts Italian, Irish, Cuban, and Cherokee.

I usually don't pick just one, when people ask I tell them all of it, lol.

The only languages I speak (besides South Florida dialects, lol)are Spanish and English.

Peaches-n-Cream 12-21-2002 09:27 PM

I am Irish on both sides. Both of my parents and three of my four grandparents are American born.

LeslieAGD 12-22-2002 12:37 AM

Both my parents are Cuban.

CanadianTeke 12-22-2002 02:17 AM

I have British citizenship (though i was born in Canada) so i tend to side with my UK roots.

SilverTurtle 12-22-2002 01:13 PM

My mom's side is Irish & Scotch-Irish
My dad's side is German & Scotch-Irish

I usually tell people I'm Irish & German. The scotch-irish on either side is pretty minute, and a long time ago (like you trace back through the german 200 years to get there). I used to only be into the Irish culture. Then in hs I had the opportunity to travel to Europe, mainly Germany. And I love it there and then got into that side of my heritage, too. I know more about the Irish side because that part of the family is always telling stories. The German side doesn't too much, but then one of my cousins last year researched all of this family history, and compiled a books she gave to all of our aunts/uncles. So I have a copy of that & it's got some interesting stuff in it.

My mom, brother & I also have a couple really distinct Native American features (in our jaw line & teeth structures.) My mom has always had dentists & even doctors ask her about it. Apparently there were some indiscretions in that side of the family (i.e. illegitimate children from Native Americans that were hushed up), and just a couple years ago my mom was contacted by a 1/2 cousin (or 1/4 cousin or something) that is *obviously* Native American & can even trace it a ways. So I have just a tiny bit of Native American, which I think is cool, but I don't really consider myself to be Native American unless I'm telling this long story about my heritage. :D

cash78mere 12-22-2002 02:28 PM

my mom's side is all italian and my dad's side is all german. i look 100% italian--dark brown hair and eyes and i tan well in the summer--but i have a german last name. since i am "estranged" from my father, i don't even consider him a part of me anymore. so that makes me italian. plus, i never even see the german side of the family

33girl 12-22-2002 05:05 PM

My dad's side is 100% hardcore German (we still speak Pennsylvania Dutch frequently). My mom's side is primarily Italian & Irish, with some Dutch and a little bit of German thrown in.

I look like my mom, except for my nose (thank God - cute little turned up noses look somewhat silly when you're 5'8") and I feel closer with that side as well. They're the more emotional side, my dad's side is more stoic.

DWAlphaGam 12-23-2002 11:54 AM

I'm 1/4 Italian, 1/8 French, 1/8 Danish, and the rest is a mix of German, English, and Polish. I usually just tell people I'm a European mutt if they ask me. I don't think I strongly resemble anything strongly, except I have blond hair, green eyes, and pale skin, so I don't look Italian at all. I'm closer to my mom's side of the family just because we have better contact with them. My family doesn't have any traditions having to do with our nationalities, although it would be cool if we did. My boyfriend is 100% Indian and I'm a little jealous that his family has so many culturally-related traditions.

I have a cute little turned up nose and I'm 5'7"?!? I like it and get compliments on it all the time...

My father's side is almost all Irish. (a smidge of Czech or Slovak we don't know which it's such a smidge!) They've been here quite a while, and for some reason I turned out the most Irish looking. So much so that people from the hard-core Irish section of Queens come up to me thinking I'm "from the old sod".

My mom's side is mostly Scottish (I guess that helped with my Celtic looks). We have a little Cherokee in there, too. I think I'm 1/32! Does that even count then?!?

Fun fact: My mom's ancestors literally came over on something like the second ship after the Mayflower! There is a cabin in a NC state park that belonged to our ancestor John Allen and it's a national historic site. And there's some book with all his descendants in it and I'm in it.

So, I identify with both sides. The "Irishness" of my Dad's side, and the American history aspect of my mom's.

damasa 12-24-2002 04:25 AM

I pretty much just say I'm Irish whenever someone asks. If they want to know if I'm anything else, I usually tell them a little bit later in the conversation. I guess it's just the hardcore irish name and the fact that I always hear "that's quite an unusual name" or "Blaine, what a strong Irish name." I'm usually like "strong Irish name, what makes a weak Irish name?" lol

AOX81 12-24-2002 12:21 PM

My mom's side of the family is from England and Germany.

I'm not really sure where my dad's side of the family originated from.

You know, most Irish people don't look like the stereotype--they have pale freckled skin and blue eyes, but most have dark hair instead of red. I only met two redheads the entire time I was there, and everyone called them "ginger ballicks!" :p

My dad's family is mostly Irish (from Cork, to be exact), but I don't know very many of them. I guess I'm closer with my mom's side. I'm an eleventh-generation American going by my mom's mother's family, as the first one came here from Wales and bought land in Delaware in 1704. (BTW, I love history and geneology--is anyone else a dork like that? :D )

UDZETA 12-24-2002 12:40 PM

Irish all the way!!! Both sides more on my Dad's then my mom's.

I know exactly what you mean, I've traced my Irish roots all the way back to the Isle myself. It's pretty interesting learning all that stuff (and finding out what clan I came from).

MacDonald for me! (on the Scottish side obviously!)

yeah, me too...but i think i might only have a smidge of irish in me...
I pretty much consider myself Canadian(family's been here for 4 centuries), but if ppl want to get technical i'm 3/4 French and 1/8 english and 1/8 german....well, the bloodline isn't really pure so there's been rumours of czech, native american, etc to be in there too, but who knows?
