isn't it funny?

Does anyone eles find it funny how in this country we would rather talk about J. Lo and Ben Affleck than issues that really affect our country and our world. This is just an example. But do these things really have any effect on our lives. Just maybe this is why eastern( and middle eastern) cultures think that we are a wasted and obliverant society caught up in things that in reality are not really important. There are people starving and homeless but yet we would rather consume ourselves with things that have no intrinsical value..Just a thought....and yes I am a conspiracy theorist...or atleast becoming one

Imthechamp 12-19-2002 04:15 AM

Did you know Ben was possibly responsible for the breakup of Justin and Britney?

OMG, I think Justin is alot cooler then Ben.

I'm trying to change that day by day.

So in a sense because we have the technology to communicate that makes us a wasted country? I understand your point to some degree but at the same time it's all a part of communication. We are a society that lives with information at the tip of our fingers. THAT is why we are able to discuss such things (frivilous or not). I should think that is a great thing that makes us strong. And we're not the only countries to have this ability.

By the way, you asked if their engagement (as an example) really affect us. In fact I'd say it does. I work in jewelry and I have had more requests for colored diamonds lately than I ever have (J Lo has a Pink Diamond). So just an example where it can affect us ;)

SAE1955 12-19-2002 04:23 AM

it just disturbs me

SAE1955 12-19-2002 04:29 AM

IT JUST UPSETS ME WHAT WE ARE COMMUNICATING ABOUT...IM ALL ABOUT SHOOTING THE SH*T BUT THERE ARE ARE PLENTY OF IMPORTANT ISSUES OUT THERE THAT WE CONTINUE TO FORGET ABOUT BECAUSE IT DOESN'T DIRECTLY EFFECT OUR LIVES.

I guess you have a point, but....

SAE1955, you have a very valid point here. I agree we must all do our parts to help save the world.

I think a lot of us do though. I volunteered for 2 hours playing with underpriviledged kids today (I had to cut back on hours b/c of finals), and I am sure I am not in the minority here.
That being said, I like talking about J-Lo, reading Maxim and Cosmo and posting about Kate Spade bags.

I will be the first to admit that I would rather pick up Glamour magazine than U.S. News and World Report. The news is depressing. The world can be a sad and unhappy place. So, for me, talking about the new boots I want to buy is something that I would rather talk about than sad things. That doesn't mean I am not doing my part to help or that I don't care.

You sound pretty upset about this topic, and justifiably so.....but being mean isn't going to help communication. How about this, what do you think we should do?

agger_rob 12-19-2002 07:29 AM

I was just thinking about this yesterday, what do you think has more clout over American society, Washington D.C. or Hollywood?

That's uncalled for.
Her point actually helps back up your original point about how much Hollywood has an influence on our lives over things like the Middle East, etc (yeah, everyone's still out there chugging oil in their SUV's).

A lot of us now are going to think you're the dumbass for your rudeness and immaturity.

sigmagrrl 12-19-2002 11:49 AM

I think it's a sign of a lack of a certain type of intelligence. I know that when I hear about a "J. Lo/Ben Affleck" type of thing, I don't really listen. But, I can't even tell you what the Israeli/Palestinian conflicts are actually about because it's not discussed with as much gusto!

Sure, it can be seen as "harmless fun", but I think what really causes other countries to hate us is our lack of interest in THEIR interests...

Not many Americans could tell you who the leaders of many other ocuntries are! And that's the real shame. We are a very selfish, self involved country. Sometimes, I don't balme other countries for not liking us....We need to take our heads out of our asses and acknowledge that we aren't any better off morally or spiritually than a country like Ghana or Sri Lanka!

OUlioness01 12-19-2002 11:57 AM

maybe we don't discuss those issues on here, but thousands of people argue about those issues every day. i've gotten into long discussions about our country's issues with my friends. maybe you don't know a lot of people interestied in politics and world affairs, but i know quite a few. yes, we do like to discuss hollywood relationships, movies, and fashion, but could you imagine the world if all we talked about was war, greed, corruption, mistrust, and hatred. we ned the frivilous stuff to talk about to make sure our society doesn't have to be depressed all the time.

SAE1955 12-19-2002 01:17 PM

Thats pretty sad when you have to dodge the issues of today because they depress you. Doesn't that tell you something?

I don't think that OUlioness was saying that she or her friends "dodge" important issues.

To me, she makes a very valid point by stating that it is important for us to have an even balance in our lives. Certainly there is a time to talk about politics and world news, but there is also a time to discuss less earth-shattering tidbits like Hollywood stars' engagements. :)

Dionysus 12-19-2002 02:23 PM

Dude, I was going to start a similar topic the other night. I noticed that some peoples (ESPECIALLY college age and younger) conversations doesn't go beyond sports, make-up, clothes, and who's dating who.

Like someone said, there needs to be a balance. While I like to talk about sports, sex, parties, clothes, gossip, etc. I also like to talk about current events, religion, and even little about philosophy, science, and politics. Hell, I just like to talk, even occassionally when I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. :p

Sometimes I wonder about really superficial or really deep people.

MoxieGrrl 12-19-2002 02:36 PM

agger_rob: To address your question....I'm leaning more toward Hollywood. It put Jesse Ventura in office. But you couldn't pay me to put Al Sharpton in a movie. :p

A balance is important, but I don't think that "important" issues are discussed enough by young people. Some say college opens one up to new experiences, expands horizons, blah, blah, blah, but I just found myself in a cultural void. The world could fall apart around my college, but I wouldn't have noticed until I went off campus. I'm ashamed to admit that I do not know a lot about politics, and more ashamed to ask someone to explain what's going on for fear of being ridiculed. As they say, ignorance is bliss :)

xo_kathy 12-19-2002 02:43 PM

I work for a Private Investment company owned by Saudi Arabians. Needless to say, I am completely up to date on everything going on in the market and in the Middle East. I have to brief my boss on things and read every frigging article in papers and mags from all over about these "news worthy" issues. So when I am up to my eyeballs in political and/or economical jargon, it's nice to log on to GC and talk about funny commercials, make-up and what I eat when I am drunk! If you want to start some threads about current topics, I am sure tons of us would respond. Don't just belittle us all for discussing things you think are irrelevant. Start something you deem constructive and we'll discuss that, too, I am sure!

Maybe i get upset/depressed when i think about some of because i have a very close friend whom i care about in the military and he will be sent to fight a war if the US choses to fight iraq. Otherwise, I absolutely love to talk about politics and stuff. I would actually like to have a job working on international treaties for the US government when i graduate from college. I don't dodge the issues of today, but neither do i feel a need to be constantly be discussing them. Sometimes we all need to let loose and talk about things that don't mean anything in the long run.

CC1GC 12-19-2002 11:09 PM

I wonder how far the enlighented era during the 15-1600s would have taken us had life revolved around such meaningless garbage as today's consumerism...it's funny you mentioned L.O. in particular. She can't sing nor act, but some jackass controlling n.a radio stations decides that (with the effects of audio dubbing) we'll give this individual more power than someone capable of making a difference in society. When did life revolve around such trivilties as some guy catching a football over a brilliant man dedicated to improving/reformatting ecology? Just keep buying bullshit we don't need, and hope that everyone else will be happy with a little less than what we have.

Ok, you can insert Nsync, Britney, Jessica, Britney, Christina, BSB, Britney and basically every other pop act that does not write their own lyrics, play their own instruments, or is able to sing without some fat guy sitting in a studio turning knobs to alter their voice to that equation.
