leaving the house without make-up
When I read the obsessive compulsiveness thread I realized that many of you guys have trouble leaving the house without make-up. Till now, I always thought that it was mostly me who run to the mirror tons of times before leaving the house to make sure everything looks perfect...
|
I guess I'm the exception then because I don't usually have a problem going out without makeup/hair done.
If my hair is doing something especially wacky or if my face is broken out, I will feel self-conscious but otherwise I'm fine with it. I do wear makeup but its just not a big deal to me if people see me without it. |
I rarely leave the house with makeup on. On a day-to-day basis the only thing that I wear is tinted chapstick. Usually I jump out of the shower, get dressed and get in the car with wet hair. I pretty much work by myself and I can wear whatever I want so I don't do much in the morning to get myself ready.
|
azalee, I'm all with you on the whole... 'every thing's gotta be perfect before I leave' comment!! No matter where I go, class, grocery store, mall, or to a party... I want to look good [in my eyes]. You never know when you are going to meet the man of your dreams... and you don't wanna see him while you are hungover with your makeup under your eyes... hair a mess... and all broken out [ok so i exagerate ] :D ... ALSO, you never know when you may run into that ex-boyfriend who you still sorta have a thing for, but he's being a dumbass ... so you wanna show him, "hey... look what your missin'... aren't I looking cute and don't you just want me back.. but you CAN'T" ;)
haha... seriously, I just don't want people to be like... damn, she looked like she just got hit with a dump truck today. I guess I'm too concerned what everyone ELSE thinks, but if I think I look good, then I feel good... so it's ALL good |
I'm a good three hours away from ALL of my ex-boyfriends so I don't think I have to worry about running into them when I look like crap. :)
|
In the south there is a pretty unspoken law that makeup is a must have... all seasons, all conditions! To leave the house (which for some is interpreted as going to get the mail!). i don't leave without at least powder, mascara and lip gloss. Just doesn't happen. And here, that is not called high maintence, it is pretty much called Natural!
|
When I was in school, Sat and Sun mornings at the breakfast spots were full of unkempt girls in sorority baseball caps! We all looked horrible! No make-up, or the left over make-up from the night before, baseball caps or ponytails, and usually sweats! If you looked all done up, everyone would figure you satyed in the night before!
|
Haha.. tru tru about the unkept girls.
I still go to breakfast after a night out w/o showering... but I'll put on new makeup.. put on a visor, and throw my hair up... so they KNOW I went out.. but I still look cute in that sorta "i-just rolled-outta-bed-didnt-wanna-get-dressed-but-i-can-still-look-cute-in-scrubby-clothes" way haha:D |
i have trouble leaving the shoue without at least some makeup, but if i'm not planning on leaving the house i don't boehter with makeup at all that day.
|
Very impressive, axotiger!
I was too lazy for all that, though! I try now to at least out on some mascara and lip gloss. I still look like I'm in college even though I've been out 5 1/2 years! But some mornings, it's all I can do to put my contacts in!!! |
It depends. Usually I won't leave the house without make-up. Also, I never go to class in a pair of sweats. I always make sure to at least wear a pair of jeans with a nice shirt (unless I'm feeling "blah" that day...those days I'll just throw on a ZTA shirt :) ). It's so sad but at my school people don't get dressed up when they wear their letters. People wear their letters when they're hung over the night before and just don't feel like putting on nice clothes so instead they throw on an old bid day shirt or old formal shirt. Kinda sad.
When I go to the grocery store, I usually won't throw on make-up and I'll just pray that I don't see anyone I know. |
As axotiger said, when I look good, I feel good, so I never leave the house without makeup!
|
I look ok with or without makeup, so it depends on the level of "dressed up-ness" that I want to be for the particular outing.

If i'm going to the gym (which is practically across the street from my house), I don't usually wear makeup. I don't really know anyone in the town where my mom lives (and I guess I live now on a perm basis, considering I moved out of my apt in BR...) so it doesn't really matter.
I don't think I've ever gone to class w/o at least a sheer foundation and lip gloss. I *never* go to the grocery store w/o makeup. I also try to dress nice for school, even during finals. Yesterday was a rare exception - I wore addidas windpants and a big sweatshirt. Not my usual at all. Its true that, in the South, some makeup is required, even to get the mail. Otherwise, you'll invariably run into someone you know and it'll get around "did you see ____, poor dear, she looks TERRIBLE..." Its better to be safe than sorry |
I only go out without makeup if I'm going to the gym.
I will never go out anywhere else without at least gloss, powder, and mascara. For work, nights out, etc: it takes me 1-2 hours to get ready (hair, makeup, clothes, scents, etc) I never, EVER wear anything that represents my sorority (letters, hat, etc) if I am not 100% made up. I don't want anyone to think of a Tri Sigma woman as anything less than perfection! One exception: I don't mind looking like hell if I go to IHOP. There's never ANYONE there I care to impress! LOL |

Basically the only time I do wear makeup is when I'm going out to the bars/a party. I don't find it a necessity to be made up everyday - I have better things to be doing (like sleeping) than spend an hour on hair and makeup every morning. I typically don't get dressed up for class either. Sometimes I roll out of bed and throw a sweatshirt on and go to class. Seriously. On occassion I'll go "crazy" and wear jeans and a nice shirt ;) Typically though, its jeans, tshirts and my favorite IOWA sweatshirts for this girl! |

Congrats on whatever the hell you do to look that fine. |
I've learned over the years that make-up isn't all that necessary. I'll almost always put on some kind of lipgloss (my favorite is a clear gloss with glitter that smells like mixed berries). I kinda got out of colored lipstick with my old boyfriend (no comment) and out of all over foundation in high school because its just too messy. I once got this bronzing powder from this company that sent out a make-up kit every month, and I LOVED IT!! It made me look all bronzy caramelly LOL. And it wasn't as messy. But I can't find it again! :( :( I got this other kind that's mineral but it kinda sucks. But anyway, back to topic, I hate eyeliner and eyeshadow and blush, so that only leaves lip gloss, mascara (sometimes), and if I can find that bronzer, that.
I remember at my old school, girl would be up, and dressed DOWN, heels, make-up and hair SPOTLESS for an 8:00 AM class     I mean, that's just too pressed to me. And these were pretty girls, they didn't need a full made up face everyday. I reserve that for special occassions or professional pictures. |

I can't leave house w/o makeup eiither--at the minimum some concealer and mascara...but that's very rare, ususally i go the whole route... however-- the one tiime i wennt OUT, to a PARTY on a SATURDAY night rather spontaneously w no maakeup other than mascara and my diirty hair in a pony taiil... I met mr. amycat. LOL |
For the longest time I only had to be wearing foundation and mascara with maybe a little gloss or tinted chapstick. Lately, I've been adding a few more touches here and there. Last year I started using clear brow gel. This year I seem to have decided that I look so much prettier with a little dab of blush. It's like I'm growing progessively more high maintance.
At any rate... I only wear a little subtle eyeshadow during the day on the rare occasion that the mood strikes me and only really get made up to go out at night. I live in Colorado though. Around here, you don't want to look like you tried too hard. |
It depends on where I am going. If I am running to the grocery store or have an early morning class, I won't care if I have make up on. But, if I am going out with friends or want to like nice for something or someone then I will make sure to put on make-up.
|
I always wear at least some makeup - mascara and concealer - but normally more. My lashes are pretty short and fine, so I ALWAYS curl them and wear mascara. I end up looking pretty much the same wherever I go because it takes a decent amount of eye makeup to make my eyes stand out, but there's a fine line between good and way too much when it comes to eye makeup. Even at night, I try to never cross that too much line and would rather err on the side of caution. The big difference between day/night for me has to do with lipstick choice.
The real way to tell if I'm trying to look cute is my hair. I have long curly hair, so if my hair's down and straight, chances are I spent way too much time doing it. If it's pulled back, I was too lazy to let it dry and straighten it out. I don't like my hair feeling sticky, so I don't let it stay curly because of all the freakin goo I'd have to put in it so it wasn't nappy-looking. I think it's pretty interesting to see that some people will only wear any type of letters if they're looking nice. We'd wear ours anywhere. Like I said, I always wore makeup so I looked decent 99% of the time, but I was a big fan of wearing letters to the gym. I guess I figured that, if nothing else, I was representing my group well by working out. |
Dang it must suck being a female in the south.
I seldom and I mean seldom leave the house WITH make-up. The only time I wear make-up is whenever I "go out". Otherwise, my face is cute enough without it. :p |
I'm sorta like IowaHawkeye, I do not wear make every day. I only wear make-up if
A-I'm going out with friends or family B-I have pimple breakout and I need to cover those ugly things. C-IF I have time in the moring, and if I do, it would be cream powder, eye shadow, and mascara and chapstick. And wearing letters, like OUlioness01 said, rule is if you wear ur letters, you do your make up, hair, and look nice. Your are basically adverstising your sorority. And if you don't look nice, people will get not get the best impression. |
I have my cycles of "oh my gosh, I need make-up on every moment I am awake" to the "eh, who am I really trying to impress anyway!?" I was terrible about it in college though. Make-up and hair to 8am's and re-apply make-up before band in the afternoon. What the point was, I don't know, since it would all sweat off anyway!
I think I'm reaching the balance now with going without if I have no where to be and I plan on bumming around. If I'm out though to shop, work, meet people, etc... then the face gets put on. The only bizarre thing I still do is put on new make-up before I head out to the skating rink. Maybe I have this crazy notion that the ice will keep it from disappearing even though I'm flying around. Or maybe it's the guys I know I will see...:p |
I almost never wear make-up...but I do love it. hmm. I usually only put on make-up when I'm bored, have a lot of time to kill, or if I'm going out somewhere special. I would definitely rather have the extra half-hour to sleep instead of applying make-up. I'm just lazy like that.
It's strange because sometimes when I'm not wearing any make-up, some people think that I'm wearing at least foundation and powder. I suppose I'm genetically blessed when it comes to the complexion. *shrug* |
I am all about wearing makeup. I usually even wear it to the gym because during the week I go in the evenings when I have it on already anyway. Sometimes I'll go without on weekends, but it helps if it's earlier in the day, although sometimes I'll be rollin' into the gym with no makeup and bedhead at about 6pm on a Saturday. The only other place I'll go without makeup is the grocery store, but I don't like to do it. It just sometimes happens that it's the only place I'll go on a lazy Sunday, and it's just not worth it to bother for that.
I don't know why, really. I just like to always look my best, and to me, that means wearing makeup. I never wanted to be one of those women who looks like she has "let herself go" once she got out of college. It's not even an issue of running into someone I'm trying to impress; I've just always been concerned about how I look and want to look decent no matter what I'm doing. The funny part is that my boyfriend thinks I look better without makeup. He's all about the "natural" look and thinks that messy hair is cute. He's always trying to get me to go out to breakfast with no makeup, bedhead, and wearing sweatpants. I always say, "But sweetie, I just can't!" |
I don't wear all that much makeup even when I go out for the evening. So it's not all that startling a change when I go out without any on. I just look a bit younger when I don't have my eyes "done up" and at my age I can't say that I mind that! lol
I ran into kddani this fall at our college when I had literally rolled out of bed, threw on some shorts and a t shirt, stuck my glasses on and decided I needed to drive to that part of town so I could buy a new Pitt sweatshirt (I get spending urges, okay???) She recognized me and didn't scream and go running the other way, so I guess I looked alright :) |
I just started working at a tv station, and one of the first pieces of advice that I picked up from one of my co-workers was to not bother putting on makeup before I got to the station.
And it totally makes sense, because by the time that I have to be on-camera, the 8:00 am makeup job would have to be completely washed off, and I would have to start all over again. It's very liberating to not have to "put my face on" before I get to work. |
Nowadays, I rarely wear makeup to work. Unlike some of my other reporting jobs, I don't really do any in-person interviews; my work is done on the telephone or by e-mail. Besides, my foundation costs over $30 a tube, so I need to be careful on how I use it.
I do, however, put on maquillage for special occasions, church, going out and for sorority business. :) I'm pretty lucky in that I'm nearly 40 and don't truly need it. |
Wow some of y'all are so high maintenence. And 90% of y'all probably truly don't need it. I actually look better w/o it. I always have taken care of my skin and I never have breakouts, my eyebrows and lashes are dark, my cheeks are pink and my hair is thick w/ lots of natural body so I don't really do much to it to make it behave. But it sucks to look 15 sometimes. Then again it is nice to know that I don't have to wake up 2 hrs before class to look presentable. I'm all for the natural look. Girls and guys. I hate guys w/ gunk in their hair. Esp. guys w/ curly hair. Let your curls go!! I love that look!!
|
totally agree w/ swissmiss ! i'm all about the natural look and don't spend 2-3 hours every morning doing make-up and messing with my hair (esp. for those 8 am class.. no way am i going to wake up at 5 am to primp myself up :p )
|
Eyeliner is about all anyone will get out of me. I'm the type of person who doesn't really care what others think. If people see me without makeup and that is the only thing they can think of to talk about, then I see that as being pretty shallow.
|
i usually don't worry about makeup. i look at it like this, if the man of my dreams sees me without make up on, then he'll know what to expect first thing in the morning. well, a little better than that, but you get the point.
since i've graduated and have more time to get ready in the morning, i do put on some make up. when i'm feeling really ambitious i do the full eyes, foundation, blush, and lipstick thing. i've always prided myself on having natural beauty and not being high maintenance. as i get older that's changed a little bit. shelley j sigma k |
I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've worn makeup this year. When I have, it's just been foundation, powder, and lipstick.
Back in high school, I had a full morning make-up routine - foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick. I was 14. I did need the foundation at times, to cover acne breakouts, but I didn't need the rest of that stuff... but at that age, if you weren't wearing makeup, it implied that your parents wouldn't let you and that you were actually obeying them, and what 14-year-old wants to send that message? :) My senior year of high school, I was so hosed with college applications, APs, etc. that my makeup routine slowly got chipped away at. First I started doing eyeshadow and no eyeliner, then I started skipping the blush, then it was just foundation and lipstick, and by the end of senior year I rarely wore makeup at all. So, I know how to use makeup, how to pick colors that look good on me, how to put on eyeshadow so that it doesn't look like I applied it with a paint roller, etc. - I just hardly ever do it any more. |

I don't know what part of the South she was talking about, lol. I NEVER wear makeup. Why? Don't need it. I wash my face everyday and apply cocoa butter afterward. It works wonders. I DO wear lip gloss, but that's about it. I am with IowaHawkeye. Class is not a fashion show. I don't really mind falling out of the bed, taking a 20 minute shower and throwing on some sweats or a tee shirt and shorts. If I see my ex while I am wearing some bummy clothes I could care less. He knows what he lost and he remembers what he had. Too bad. And if I meet the man of my dreams, I would SO rather look natural. alphaiota, I hear ya! |
I'm nearly the opposite of the rest of you, it sounds like!
I rarely wear makeup or fix my hair to go to work. I cherish those extra few minutes of sleep in the morning, and since I have very little face-to-face contact with anyone during the day, I don't need to impress anyone but myself :) However, when I get home from work, I'll usually put a little makeup on and fix my hair before my boyfriend gets home, because I always try to look my best for him. I know it doesn't matter a whole lot to him if I wear any or not (aah, love!) but I just want him to see me at my best... make an effort :) |
I usually look like I have make-up on when I don't have any thanks to thick eyelashes, rosey cheeks and pink lips so I'm usually in my natural state when it comes to make up. I have tho this school year started being a little more high maintenace when it comes to hair and make up and will at least put on perfume, moisturizer and lip shine before I head out. Hair is always at least brushed. I wasn't aloud to wear make up till high school and even then I hardly ever wore it. I've never been one to spend a lot on it or wear a lot of it. But I do like it! LOL

OMG I'm so much like axotiger! I can not leave the house without makeup. I"m a blonde and if I don't have black masacara on I look dead! Absolutley dead!!!!!
 And you never know when you will see that ex-bf that dumped you. And sadly I want people to talk good about me. I want people to say "you know Jen looks nice today?" or "man, I wish I was dating Jen". I know thats horrible of me but its the truth so I might as well not deny it. As for class not being a fashion show. Well, here at UK it can be. If you are in a sorority the best thing to do is wear black stretchy pants, your sorority shirt, school mascot visor and sorority tote bag. This way you look like crap......but hey you're in this sorority so you're still awesome! But for non-sorority girls makeup is a must unless you don't want to be noticed. And when you've got class with UK basketball players you WANT to be noticed!!! I had a 8:30am class with a girl who woke up at 5am to take an aerobics class, then came to class in dress clothes. So the rest of us girls were like "crap now we have to look good too" So for the rest of the semester all of us would try to look half decent. Its all about confidence. I enjoy putting on makeup, I enjoy getting compliments about how I look. If I dont' have that "I feel pretty" attitude than with or without makeup I still look bad b/c I try to hide and I dont' smile. However, I could give a rats ass about my hair. Put it in a bun or ponytail and I"m good to go. |
